Since the pandemic has started, johns kabob has been a staple to go place for us. They have a deal that is two plates for twenty and another deal that is two appetizers for ten. Well, this is new. A Mediterranean place in Monterey Park! Finally a Non-Asian restaurant opening!!! I love Mediterranean, so I came to check this place out with my cousins. They are located where a Ceviche restaurant was located..I used to love that place D=... Anyway, of course there is only street parking available or you can try your luck for the 2 only parking spots they have. I ordered the Chicken Kabob plate. It came with a side of salad that came right away. My cousins ordered the same, but somehow only 2 of us got our foods and the other 2 plates came 30min later... The owner there (I believe hes the owner), wasn't even apologetic. He just brought the plates after we asked about them and didn't even apologize for the delay. He didn't even bring them the salad either... Overall, food is okay. The service needs to definitely improve. The place got a little crowded and it seemed like the workers were scrambling. I had a Groupon, but I guess they've had some difficulty getting the phone scanner to work, so the owner is not happy about his experience. Only his phone seems to scan the Groupons, so you have to bring in a hard copy if you have one. Anyway, this was my first time, and I must say all the food we got was delicious. My son got some fried chicken pieces and fries and they were quite good. My gal got the Gyro (beef and lamb) combo with a chicken kebab. I got the same thing. For her salad she chose Greek and I had a Caeser (comes with the combo along with one side). For a side she had Hummus (Which was very fresh) and I had the fries. The meets were delicious. You also get a bunch of crispy toasted pita triangles. I ordered a side of their fantastic Falafel and got a large pita wrap. Then I put the meet, some taziki dressing, some salad and the meet in and made a huge fat wrap - the kind I'd get in NYC all the time. I am a fan of Zankou Chicken generally, and have had good Greek food at Papa Cristo's, but I think I liked John's Kabob the best so far. A small place. Good for take out, though they do have tables. Friendly service. Prices are fair. I recommend trying it. It's a nice chance to have something other than Chinese Food in the SGV. read more

This location has been a bunch of different restaurants over the years. Currently it's a Kabob/Hummus restaurant. Standard kabob plates (choose a skewer of beef, chicken, lamb etc and two sides - rice, hummus, salad etc). Falafels, soup, gyros etc. A good variety of options. The food is pretty meh, in terms of both flavor and ingredient quality. Pretty much the same as what you would expect at a mall food court.... There is basically no parking cause this place is like on an island in the middle of a weird street cross section. I think it would be an ok contender for lunch if you worked at one of the nearby businesses but the taste vs portion vs price ratio is poor. read more

Came here with a friend who was craving middle eastern food! There's ample street parking and the store itself is pretty comfy and quaint. We ordered a small bowl of lentil soup, falafel (6 piece appetizer), and a combo plate of gyro and beef kabob, rice, and Greek salad. (Around $27 total without tip) The service was decent and the food was really flavorful and good. I loved the falafel--super crispy and still soft on the inside. This is a nice change of pace to all the Asian food around Monterey Park. I met a friend here for dinner and had to circle around to find parking. Ended up on the street on Atlantic. My friend grabbed a booth and we went to the front to order. There was already a disgruntled customer in line waiting for the waitress to fix his order. She seemed a bit frazzled and we had to ask if we could order. She wasn't the friendliest, but we figured it was probably cause of previous experience. I ordered the mix place with chicken and gyro, with hummus and salad. She ordered a greek salad with chicken and a side of baba ganoush and hummus. We got our food and my order was missing the salad and hers was missing the hummus. (So maybe the waitress wasn't the greatest). The food was really tasty and overall it was a good experience. Woohoo! Another non-Asian place in the SGV! That effort alone deserves a bonus star. With that said, the food is really 3 stars. My friend & I each ordered a combo plate with beef & chicken kabobs (~$12) and we found the food only tasting okay. Each combo plate comes with a Greek salad, 4 pieces of pita bread, 2 skewers of the meat of your choice and a HUGE bed of rice pilaf (or fries if you prefer). They also give you a type of yogurt sauce to tie all the flavors together. I wish they had some sort of house garlic sauce to go with the food because I feel that would really push the flavor profile to exciting! Plates range from $10-14 (they also serve salmon!) and gyro sandwiches range from $6-8. The food (I assumed made fresh?) does take a little bit to come out (~15 min or so) so maybe calling in your order ahead may be the way to go. The restaurant itself isn't too small: maybe 6-8 tables for dine in? This location unfortunately is another revolving door for restaurants (I think it used to be a ceviches place and then before that, a bakery?), probably due to its unfortunate parking situation. Great addition to Monterey Park. There isn't enough of a variety in MPK so I am so happy John's is here! I would definitely come back! I had the gyro salad and it was very decent -- better than Daphne's. I also sampled the rice and hummus from my friend's kabob plate. Hummus was fresh and the rice was nice, fluffy, and buttery. I took a star off because the pita had a hint of freeze burn when I bit into it. It was subtle but I could tell the bread was in the fridge a little too long. read more

Food is decent. Rice is a little underflavored but their meats are really good and their sauces are excellent. However, their staff sometimes don't wear facemasks in the middle of a massive COVID-19 outbreak. California numbers are spiking from lack of facemasks and I saw their kitchen staff not wearing masks while working on food. Until masks are mandatory for their own staff and it's properly enforced, I won't be able to risk eating here, no matter how good the food tastes. Remember, masks are to prevent them from spreading COVID to others; this means they are not prevented at all from spreading it while they may be infected and asymptomatic. read more

We've been eating at John's for a few years now. unfortunately the last three times have not been great. 1st time - we ordered our combos and they literally gave us 10 fries. We thought that was off but attributed it to Covid and just moved on. 2nd time- we got the same number of fries (fine) but this time the were so hard that we couldn't even eat them. Again, we tried to be understanding but we are paying for this food so it should at least be edible. 3rd and final time- we ordered and mentioned the issued with our fries last time and asked that they please give us fresh fries. We get home and the fries are practically uncooked. You could taste how grainy the insides were. While we love to support our local business, we also want to enjoy our food. Tzatziki is made with strained yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt and olive oil. Everything was delicious. Even the sides were highlights! All of the meat was tender, flavorful and cooked to perfection. The portions were huge. The rice was very flavorful and seasoned. The hummus was delicious and complemented the pita bread. I'm going to even rave about the fries, they are not your average fast food fries! The fries were very crispy and probably one of the best fries I've had in a while! Parking is really limited. There isn't really a parking lot so park on the street in the residential neighborhood behind the restaurant. Dining area is small but seating at the outdoor tables is available. Although the first time I have "checked in," this has to be my 7th or 8th visit. The food is good...the hummus is excellent andI don't generally like hummus. I love the rice pilaf. I usually order the Kabobs and often have the steak (termed "beef") and shrimp. To me, it is a very satisfying lunch. The food taste is great, but the portions have drastically changed. I've been buying the catering packages from John's Kabobs for years and have never run into not having enough food. However, I ordered the 25-35 people package and the rice and salad were extremely rationed & the Caesar salad had no cheese. The rice and salad were not enough for 25 people. Other times I've ordered, we always have plenty of rice leftover which made no sense this time. The only positive note I have to say is I called in to order additional sides and it was ready right away (even though the portions were again small and the salad was the most depressing salad I've seen). To my surprise when it was delivered there was no meat that was shown in the picture instead just a small piece around the bones I wish I could get a picture and send it back but my partner is really hungry and couldn't wait any longer to get another order. I'm all about supporting local businesses! Especially in times of crisis, I'd like to give a shoutout to John's Kabob. It is one of the only restaurants in the area that opens fairly late and they're offering an amazing 2 plates for $20 deal. Whoo hoo! Portions are generous, they're not skimping just because there's a pandemic. My favorites are the and beef and chicken kabob. As for sides, I always enjoy the buttery rice and Greek salad. I also ordered the lemon chicken soup which was delicious, but a little salty for my taste. This wasn't an issue because I just added water when I got home and ended up with more soup :) If you can call ahead, do so, because you may need to wait a little at the counter. The chicken kabob plate is pretty standard. The price was less than $13 for such a huge portion which was well worth. With the chicken kabob, I got it with rice and salad. Salad was boring and just meh, rice was good with the chicken. One thing I wish was it came with a sauce. It was so bland (or maybe I'm just unhealthy). Best Mediterranean restaurant in San Gabriel Valley. Frank is wonderful and meticulous with his food and ensure his customers receive delicious, generous, and high quality meal. My mother's favorite is the Lamb Kabob plate. I love the Gyro Sandwich (none in Hawaii) and also the Seasoned Beef Kabobs. During pandemic with mother being home, I place home delivery of her favorite Lamb Kabobs and Gyro Sandwich. She was so delighted as I was not able to be there during the pandemic. No integrity found here , manager or at least he made it seem that way while messing up orders was difficult to work with. Very poor service and unfortunate as they used to be better. Food comes out slow and incorrect. They gave/handed off the wrong order to a delivery driver and instead of correcting it and remaking it (because they can't be sure what happened to it after it leaves their store) they force the driver to wait until the other finally answers and returns back which took over 30 min not inc time to cook food. Very gross and unhygienic. Even worse when the customer called to wonder why their order is taking an hour they try to throw the drivers under the bus when it was the restaurant worker who gave the wrong order to the wrong person. They didn't verify order numbers or food and then instead of properly fixing the mistake they try to deflect blame and refuse to remake the food. The sandwich combos come with a fountain drink and a side (choice of rice, hummus, fries or salad). The portion of fries that comes with the meal is actually quite sizable. My go-to mediterranean food in the 626! This place is located in a rather interesting little island close to Honey boba. I usually always order their chicken kebab plate with rice and hummus, while their salad and pita bread are also included. The pilaf rice is an addiction paired along side the lemon peppered chicken itself, is absolutely delicious! The amount of hummus they give along with your plate is also plentiful and definitely better than what I'm used to. Would definitely recommend! read more

I live in Alhambra and it's tough finding good Mediterranean food around here. I was a little skeptical coming in but I'm glad I did. I had the lamb kabob plate with hummus and rice. The rice was perfect and the hummus was great as all with the pita bread. My sister tried the gyro supreme with a side of hummus and salad, the salad was portioned well and the dressing wasn't overpowering. The plates were bigger than I expected, very filling and lead to food coma. I'll definitely be back! Parking is limited, only 2 parking spaces and 1 of them is handicap.
