This place isn't as clean or fancy looking as most people would like it to be, but that didn't phase me. Not too crowded but when I walked in, the place was so foggy, it seemed like there was literally no ventilation. Ordered a large lamb over rice. It can feed two but since I was so hungry, at the time I wanted the large. It is SO different than ordering from Gyro King. The basmati rice was yellow (Gyro king it's white). There were tomatoes, lettuce, and something that made it tangy that I can't quite pin point what it was. I didn't even make a dent since there was so much food. Meat was bigger in portion. It's really hard to compare because the taste is completely different. Lots of white sauce too. My friend was being lame and got fried shrimp with rice. Not bad. The fried shrimp actually had flavor. I've had no previous halal food experiences to compare with, so I can't judge on the authenticity of this place. Don't take me the wrong way when I say that I was pretty disappointed. Main Reason: SPICE OVERLOAD. Yes I've heard Halal food involve a lot of spices, but this was completely out of the ball park from what I had expected. The fried chicken wings I ordered literally tasted like someone had dumped a bowl of spices onto it, not to mention the meat was pretty dry as well. My mouth turned into a SALTLICK after 2 or 3 wings. The Lamb over rice was barely passable. Not that I like lamb to begin with, but I also hate my food being drenched in sauce. Even with the sauce on the side, everything else (rice, meat, and veggies) were already pretty moist. After stirring the sauce in, it all just felt like one big, wet, slimy mess in my mouth. This place is legit. I first heard about this place from Alexander W.'s ROTD not long ago and bookmarked it as a place I had to try. Back in 2010 I did JetBlue's AYCJ and flew through NYC so many times- each stop in NYC warranted a visit to the Halal cart on 53rd and 6th. Ate the chicken and rice so many times and couldn't get enough of it! Since that time I've always wondered if you could find something similar to it in Houston... So you can imagine my eyes lit up when I saw this place on yelp. As others have mentioned, probably not the safest place to be late at night, but it's not so bad. I got the chicken and lamb over spicy rice - and it definitely lived up to my expectations! Of course it's not as good as NYC, but heck, it's pretty darn close. Their white sauce is nothing too special, but the combination of all ingredients is a flavor explosion. The meat is perfect, but I'm skeptical about the hygiene and quality of the rice. After watching the worker take phonenorders and lines orders, she came to me ans apologized firbthe wait and took my money. I thought nownitnwould be fast becasue I order lamb or rice and I presumed the food was already cooked. So all she had to do is dish it up and hand it to me. I proceeded to watch her take more phone orders and dish up other orders and then... a total of 38 mins later, i got my food. Needless to say, i was irritable. But decided to be grateful to have real food at almost midnight. After getting home and diving in... i must say the lamb over rice is amazing... perfectly seasoned. Tender. The veggie salad is fresh. I love the carrots. The white sauce is delish. Don't get off put because this place is in the hood because the food is bomb. I have gotten food here for many years and the food has always been good and consistent. I have also ALWAYS gotten the food to go and only went inside the place once because I normally go through the drive thru. If they place got some renovations and updates done and if the service was better then I would have given them 5 stars. Now back to the food, we normally get lamb over rice, chicken over rice, combo over rice, and the chicken wings. The chicken wings are a MUST try! It is nicely fried, seasoned well and an actual whole wing with the drumette, wingette, and even the tip. For people who cannot handle the spice I suggest the regular rice, or you can opt for half spicy half reg. The meats are seasoned well and we even did 2 blind taste tests with halal guys and Jones beat them out unanimously. The gyros, pita and hummus, and fish is good, the okra and fries are meh. They are not crispy and more on the soggy side and the fries are thick cut. Mind you, it might be different if I had eaten there but I would probably never do that until they fix up the place or if I was really drunk. Good thing I was in the area, I decided to try out some Jones Fried Chicken. I was already on Bellaire so I zipped to Fondren and there I was smack in the middle of Whataburger and JFC. I rolled up to the drive thru (because I didn't wanna go on the inside) the menu was blunt, and the lady on the intercom directed me to drive to the window. The lady at the window had a strong accent (not sure where she was from) and she was very polite, she asked if I wanted some spicy rice I asked her how spicy is spicy. She then gave me a sample of the rice, and yes it was really hot and spicy. Then I was directed to a guy (because the lady had to get the phone), the guy was nice too. I wanted to get the large pan of rice, chicken, and lamb but my wallet opt that I just get the small instead. *If you want to pay with a debit or credit card your order has to be over $10, if not you have to pay with cash. The small pan was large enough to fill my belly, I just wonder how large the large was. The lamb was really good, well seasoned, and very flavorful. Although, the chicken was dry and not really seasoned. The rice didn't need to be seasoned because it was covered with tasty lamb, cucumbers, white sauce, lettuce, onions, green bell peppers, tomatoes, and some olives. I don't like olives, so I took it out. Though, the rice did taste a little like Spanish rice, but not much so. The dish of my meal was a pie shell dish, (like what you bake pies in yeah that shiny pan) Though, the appearance of the establishment wasn't appealing, but the food hit the nail on its head. We still had 1/4 of it left... Which I ate for dinner. :) If you love spicy food, don't be fooled by their red sauce here. Please try a small amount of the red sauce before pouring 1 full pack of it into your bowl. My friend was crying waterfalls. It is spicy (and I love it!). It is not adjusted to the "American" spicy if that makes sense. My second visit, I was disappointed. I ordered two large lamb over rice and one small chicken over rice. They consisted mainly of rice. There were barely any meat, tomatoes, lettuce, white sauce, etc. The chicken was dry too. I hope it's not a hit or miss with this place. I placed an online order for the kebab plate, and I wanted extra beef so I stated in the comments that I'd pay for one when extra when I got there to pick up my order. One of my cousins picked up some jone's gyros last night. They orders the lamb gyro. Im not a fan of lamb, but my other cousins took a bite of the gyro. Got them wanting to go pick some up. I can't believe I didn't find out about this place until recently. This place is amazing because of it's giant portions, low price, and awesome food. My favorite dish is the Halal Chicken. It comes with chicken, rice, jalapenos, banana peppers, chopped lettuce... all covered under this delicious white sauce. Had the worst experience at Jones today. I ordered four chicken and lamb over rice. After receiving my order, I noticed that both the big and small boxes had the same white sauce container. When I asked for extra sauce, they refused, stating that it would cost an additional $0.75 for each sauce, even though it should be free. Its Ramadan and I'm about to break my fast in an hour, so didn't want to argue, so I agreed to pay with my credit card. However, they said they charge a minimum of $5 for card transactions. I swear to Allah If I had cash, I would have paid just to move on but I didn't. I kept asking the manager what they wanted me to do, I'll look stupid spending $5 on sauce despite everything the manager said I should deal with it next time bring cash or request extra sauce ahead of time. How would I know I need extra sauce in advance?? I'm deeply disappointed by how I was treated and how they made a big deal out of $0.75 where I had spent $50. You know the saying, "Anything tastes good when you're hungry?" Well we were starving, and we would still never go back there. Not only was it lacking in taste but quite honestly every other aspect as well. The service was frankly abysmal. They didn't know the menu, had issues communicating, alternated between using order numbers and just items on the order to call customers, and there was an issue on every single order in my group and most others in the place. Furthermore, they were completely stoic and had little interest in anything but getting the job done. It was a whole heap of initial disappointment. The food just finished the deal for me. Across multiple items including shrimp, burgers, 'sandwiches' (Actually Pita Wraps), chicken, wings and tenders, there was essentially NO flavor at all. It was quite similar to a black hole of flavor where any added condiments simply disappeared in their pit of despair. Furthermore, the wings were bigger than the actual fried chicken, and their spicy rice was pure pain and misery. I love flavorful spice, but this was just pain. There was nothing here that made me ever consider coming back. To seal the deal, before I even left I ended up vomiting multiple times. My body just wouldn't take it. This is my absolute warning, don't take the chance and come here. There's nothing redeeming and the building itself is enough to make you sick, and that's before you even get to the food. Came here at a fairly late night around 3 am. The service was polite and we got our food super quick! I got the lamb over spicy rice with extra sauce. The spicy rice is really spicy, but that was exactly the spice I was looking for. If the spicy rice is too spicy for you, you can always get half regular rice and half spicy rice instead. What I like about this place versus another halal place is the fact that they add corn to their plate, which is a total game changer! It adds a little bit of crunch and sweetness to the plate that you can't find anywhere else. When I was in New York, I really wanted to try the halal cart. We even passed by it but I was always so full from the nonstop eating that I never had a chance to try it. I came for lunch on a weekday and the restaurant was pretty empty. I ordered the lamb with rice and extra sauce. There's a choice between spicy and mild rice and I got half and half because I couldn't decide. I also ordered an iced water but the water in their soda fountain machine stopped working the night before so I ordered a coke zero for 80 cents instead. The food came out within a few minutes but it was lukewarm. I tasted the meat with the sauce by itself and it wasn't too flavorful but it tasted better when I mixed it with the bottom layer of rice. The mix of mild and spicy rice was a good level of spice for me. There were also olives, corn, and lettuce mixed in as well. Great place to go if you're in Bellaire and want a quick and cheap meal. I live close to this so I decided to try it out of convenience. When they say "$10 minimum" they're very serious about observing that rule. I ordered the 3 wings and 1 piece of fish dinner that's $8.99. With taxes my total was $9.73, the cashier refused to let me use my card although I was close to the minimum. I ended up ordering an additional wing because everything else such as the sides were pricy. Next time I'll bring cash if I'm only ordering for one. My friends and I were lucky enough to have come when there weren't a lot of people so no line for us. Yay! It did take a bit to get our food, but it's because they make your food when ordered. Ambiance (3/5): Don't be fooled by the exterior of this place cause the food is bomb. The inside is a little bit run down, but clean and big enough to sit down and enjoy your food. Lamb over rice (4/5): We got a large lamb over rice with half spicy and half regular rice with the delicious white sauce and red sauce on the side. If you like spicy I would recommend the spicy rice, but for someone who loves spicy food I would still advise half spicy and half regular rice. I promise you your tummy will not like it later if you get full spicy rice LOL. But wow, this entree was so good!! I've only tried Halal guys when it comes to lamb over rice, but man this place definitely wins for me. It is very flavorful and the quality of the lamb was good. The white sauce is bomb & damn the spiciness of the red sauce is on another level. You think halal guys red sauce is spicy... you haven't tried Jones's yet. Very filling and great for what the price is worth (compared with Halal guys pricing and size) 6 pc fried wings (5/5): ERMAGOD. Best wings I have ever tried. These wings were fried to perfection.. crispy on the outside & juicy on the inside. I love how meaty the wings were and man.. if I can get my hands on these right now.. I would. Great combo to eat with lamb over rice. Overall, great experience!! Oh, Jones. Where do I even begin? This is my most overdue review, having been here easily a hundred times. I've lived within a couple miles of the place literally my entire life, up until a few months ago when that got increased to seven miles, which is why I think I've been spurred to write this review. Because I miss it, despite the fact that I still drive half an hour to get my precious lamb over rice. Lemme begin by honestly saying - historically, this has been a drunchies place for me. The staff knows me better than I know them, simply because so much of the time I have been blackout or not far from it. This place has seen me through the heavy partying days of my early 20's as well as one spectacularly awful breakup. It's been a steady light in dark times. The crazy hours they're open make them a refuge, a sacred space. I almost always order a "large lamb over rice, spicy rice, extra hot sauce, please." I recommend the spicy rice configuration to everybody, but the hot sauce (which comes in a separate little cup) should be gradually added and tasted based on how well you know your spicy tolerance. Unless you have a death wish like me and don't mind pooping all night. And maybe into the next day. Seriously. Trust me. I was brought up on spicy food that could make you cry, but this hot sauce is nothing to mess with. Still, if I found a man who would brashly mix the whole thing into his food and enjoy it despite the tears, I would marry him, no questions asked. (pro tip: I would recommend getting a yogurt drink {with the red top} if you are nervous about the spice. While incredibly salty, it cuts down on the heat whether you drink it directly or mix it into your rice.) I've had their chicken over rice before, which is p good, but the lamb over rice is where it's at. The fried chicken should also not be scoffed at; it's not called Jones Fried Chicken for nothing - well seasoned, juicy, crispy, I have no complaints. I haven't tried their normie food like burgers or hotdogs, but I imagine it can't be terrible. It just can't be. Now, to get to the part that tbh brings me back here just as much as the delicious food: the service. Srsly, I have known these people for years. They are so sweet and warm. I have walked in, barely able to stand due to my blood's ABV, and my usual guy has already gotten my food ready (perfect down to every last picky detail) for when I pay up at the counter. The ladies all remember my days as a makeup artist and make small talk about makeup when I look good, and don't judge me when I'm clearly having a rough day. Something about this place makes me feel safe. If you're trying this as a one-off, go for it. If you're new to the area or just want to be regular, don't think twice. "Large lamb over rice, spicy rice, extra hot sauce, please." Go! P. S. I am not ashamed to say the drive thru is a bit rough. The service is sub par and the wait time is long. Don't be lazy. The first thing i noticed about this place is their open and closing times, if you are a night clubber or partied then this is a good spot on the weekend since they are open to 3am or 5am. They're lamb over rice is very delicious a lot of veggies and a variety of flavors and don't get me started on their spice level, it can get hot if u ask for spicy! I had their chicken wings which were very delicious too, wish they had a sauce to go with them though. From inner and outer appearance the place looks sketchy and run down. Luckily the food is good! Minus the stuck up employee service. The wings are big, juicy, well seasoned, and fried to your drunken perfection. Only thing about it is I'm never drunk when I go here. However, it would be a nice after the club spot to hit up. The spicy rice is really good with the white sauce on top too. I just wouldn't recommend sitting around and watching them prepare your food.
