I went to this place on a whim last Friday with two friends. We were in the Lake Merritt area, and was gonna hit up that Pho place around the corner near Merritt Bakery, but decided to get something more...um, hearty. So we decided for Thai! I recalled having a delicious experience at the Thai place on Grand, and suggested we go there. Unfortunately it was closed! (It was 10pm at night) so it was between a sushi place in the area and this korean place. I'm glad we picked the korean place, Jong Ga. A friend and I had their house bulgogi special with tofu soup and seafood pancake. The seafood pancake was exquisite! Satisfied my taste buds immediately...but wait! There was more! It was only served as an appetizer along with this cold spaghetti kimchi-tasting soup (I'm sorry guys, I don't know what it's called). When all that was done, the wonderful bulgogi came out with lots of beautiful little side dishes. Of course, the waiter kinda prepared the food and insured that the meat was tenderly cooked and all the juices were flowing in the right spots (yeah, I felt obligated tip him more as he was not only a waiter, but kinda like a chef, and so I did!). My other friend had the Bi Bim Bap (there's a cold and hot version, ask if you don't know)...and she got the hot version, where it was served to you still steaming and cooking. Oh yeah. I normally demolish Korean food like no other, and that day was no exception. =P However, the only difference is between this place and other places is the price:portion ratio. It is very favorable. You do get quite a feast with that 17 dollar per person special (other places I've been to were like 20-30 of similarly quality Korean food)...and also the service was very friendly, so I'd definitely come here again. Here for 9:15 PM dinner, made with reservations. 4 of us, just a few nights ago. Something new I learned: OB plus kalbi=pure glee!!! We got a lot of food, even though the assortment of banchan was very impressive. Asian bean sprouts and gojuchong turnips were mighty good. We ordered iron platter of kalbi, octopus dol dot, grilled veg kimchi dolsot with fried egg, japchae, and one spicy soondubu stew. Way too much food. Tastes good, opens late, service can be touch/go, as this place is popular. The servers are definitely doing some aerobic exercise. As far as Korean food goes in the East Bay, this is definitely a good option if you happen to be in the Oakland/Berkeley neck of the woods. I haven't come across any good kbbq spots since I moved to NorCal so I was eager to try this place. Thank goodness we made a reservation because even at 8:30 pm on a Sunday it was packed with a long line out the door. We arrived exactly at 8:30 and were seating as soon as we walked in. It's a pretty large restaurant, the tables are pretty close together. I'm pretty sure the table next to us had no problems hearing out conversation but whatever. There's also upstairs seating and clean 1-person bathrooms. We ordered the AYCE of course and it came with a ton of ban chan that was very colorful and flavorful. Also came with tofu soup and some kind of noodle soup that was also tasty. They had a pretty limited selection of meat and they weren't as tasty as other places I've tried in SoCal. This place has such great prices and meat! We did the all-you-can-eat for 30 dollars on a Thursday night and it was quite busy. We loved the galbi and the bulgolgi. We also liked the kimchi pancakes, radish wraps, and tofu soup. For our friend who doesn't eat beef or pork, he enjoyed the spicy chicken and calamari a lot. Overall, the service is great. They always exchange the grill when there are too many grill marks too, which is great! I don't know if they do that at any other place, so it was really nice they do that here. read more

It's very expensive because of the time and herbs that go into making this dish. Sadly it was teriyaki drenched in potatoes, maybe 2-3 dates and worst of all it was overcooked. For $30 you'd think you'd get a decent amount but it turned out bad in proportioning as well. I don't really care for how the place looks since I really came for the food. AYCE Korean BBQ was a great price at $23/person. There was about a 15 minute wait for dinner late on a weekday night. You just put your name down on the clipboard at the front. Service was nice but they were really busy so weren't too attentive. The banchan variety here is amazing! Soo many little colorful dishes so it was fun trying everything. The AYCE comes with a choice of soup. The spicy tofu soup was delicious! You order 3 items from the AYCE menu at a time. None of the meats were up there in terms of top Korean BBQ but favorites that we had were the bulgogi and short ribs. The meat quality wasn't that great but the marinade was good. I really loved the salt/pepper sesame oil sauce that they give you on the side. It tasted delicious with the meats. I really did not like the sirloin or brisket. Since my friend was starving... we didn't dare try to cook our own food...Hence, we ordered the following: - (Hea Mul Pa Jun) Pan Fried Pancake with Seafood & Green Onions $9.95 ~ This was good. It came with a variety of seafood and I actually was able to tolerate the sauce that came with it. Usually, the sauce would be spicy. - (Bul Go Gi) Grilled Thin Sliced Beef Marinated in House Special Sauce $18.95 ~ This I wasn't a fan of... it lacked taste... it was really bland. Just ate it b/c it was there and I felt bad and I was hungry... - (Mae Woon Dak Gui) Grilled Chicken Marinated in House Spicy Sauce $15.95 ~ Friend ordered this and I didn't dare try it b/c it looked red and spicy. I was on the hunt for Korean food and searching through Yelp I found this Korean restaurant by Lake Merritt, Oakland. Surprisingly enough I found parking on one of the side streets even though it did look not good at the beginning. Jong Ga does not have a parking lot. Jong Ga starts out with these twenty small dishes of Korean appetizers and I was totally impressed. Such delights as kim chee, little deep friend tofu, salted fish, turnips and other tasty treats. I ordered the Gal Bi Dol Sot Bab ($13.95) -Fresh Seasoned Vegetables, Beef(Marinated Short Rib), Fried Egg & Rice in a Hot Stone Pot. The shorts ribs were tender and tasty. The marinade on the ribs was fantastic, I wish I could find the same marinade when I do grill short ribs. The Jong Ga menu features meat, seafood, and vegetarion plates plus hot pot, casserole and soup dishes. The meat dishes from what I saw were very large servings, I think they are large enough for two. The service was very good. Next time I'll have to try one of the seafood items. read more

Now, coming from a Korean guy, it must be good. That was 3 years ago and I bring all my friends here to eat and they love it too! We always order the broiled chicken - YUMMY and so freakin tender!! Jong Ga House is our go-to for quality, KBBQ AYCE, whenever my friends and I have triumphed over midterms and think we're ready for the food coma to come (we aren't, ever). The wait can be crazy long on weekends since it isn't one of those supersized kbbq places and there don't seem to be that many grills. Weekdays seem to hold an okay wait, however, oftentimes we were seated immediately. The place gets pretty smokey so you'll go home with your clothes smelling like kbbq for a week, guaranteed. It's about 20.99/person (cheaper than Gogi Time AYCE and has better options) coming with a cold soup, choice of hot soup, 18 ban chan (so many!), lettuce plus rice, and then you have a choice of three types of meat at a time. They don't charge if you leave a little extra meat, as far as I know, unlike many AYCE places but I would still be wary of over ordering. We usually get bulgogi (their marinade is a winner), short ribs, pork belly, then some other stuff to experiment with and fight over their carmelized potato ban chan because they're so good on their own. Boy, you get a lot of food here. My current profile pic features a starter. I ended up getting a Korean bowl with chicken. I should've went with the beef because when you're at a Korean joint, stick with the bimbimbap. Lesson learned. The food was still quite delicious. Everyone ordered something different and they all came out piping hot. One thing I will comment on was I found a hair or a part of a hair net in my food. I didn't see any other pieces though so I just took it out. I waited a while for my dish. If the food wasn't good then I'd probably knock a star off. Overall, the selection of dishes and the amount of starters you get is crazy good for the price. I loved the potatoes they had. We asked for more in bunches. This by far was the worst dinning experience I've ever had. Waited over an hour to be seated. They sat my boyfriend and I upstairs in a small dinning room that had two large parties in there. We assumed we were going to get the short end of stick when it came to getting service since we were tucked away upstairs. The service was just okay at first, they would come back periodically (not often but a tolerable amount.) To start we ordered the pork belly, beef brisket, and beef sirloin. The beef brisket was not the usual thinly sliced brisket that's marbled. It was more of a thin piece of flank. It was a disappointment since that's usually my favorite. I've never had brisket from a korean bbq place like that before. The sirloin was very similar to the brisket but tasted better, probably because it was a better cut. The pork belly was good. It was a thin cut, which is the way I like so I can cook it to be extra crispy. Everything seemed okay at first until we ordered our second round. We put in our order and our server never came back upstairs. We waited about 20-30 minutes and still did not receive any service. It was just ridiculous. We didn't even want to eat anymore, we just wanted to leave. My boyfriend had to walk down there to locate our server and it wasn't even busy down stairs. Instead, all the servers were just standing around which was so annoying. Since their workers are too lazy to walk upstairs every so often to wait tables, maybe they should invest in the installation of service buttons so they only need to wait tables when it's requested. Yeah, the price is slightly lower than their competitors at $22 per person, but their food isn't all the rage either and their service is definitely non-exisistent. This is NOT worth waiting for, especially not for more than an hour. I rather go down the street and go to Gogi Time. Never ever have I gone to an AYCE KBBQ place and leave still hungry until I came here. read more

I'm not sure if they even have tables to accommodate a party of 10 but we were disappointed that they didn't tell us when we made the reservation. They also had tons of side dishes, around 10+ options. Of course, you can always request for more of a certain side dish once you finish and crave for more. Waiters checked on us regularly, and we didn't need to flag them down to request for more meat. The service is consistently good. Kudos to the staff who are always friendly. My favorite Korean spot in the East Bay, hands DOWN The lunch specials here are the best! 7 days a week, I usually get the bul-go-gi or the soft tofu soup. The lunch specials are basically half priced off the dinner menu and are just as delicious. You receive not only a free cold noodle appetizer, but also 10 side dishes that are all full of flavor and an assortment of variety. I've tried various Korean restaurants, and I swear this place has the best tasting banchan! The staff are very hardworking and polite here. I came on a crowded weekend, where I literally saw the waitresses sprinting around the restaurant to serve everybody. I advise not going on a Fri or Sat night, as this place can get packed. The meat here is always juicy and tender, and you are even given the option of tabletop bbq if you prefer. TL;DR: Fantastic Korean food, don't get alcohol here. This place is wonderful! I always go there for my tteokbokki fix. For about $11, you get so much for an "appetizer". The tteok is chewy and pillowy. The sauce is a nice blend of sweet and spicy. It comes with a hardboiled egg, glass noodles, and a ton of fish cakes! Very unexpected, as most other places just give you an egg if you're lucky. The banchan there is pretty standard, there are a few similarly repeat dishes where it's obvious they were picked in the same sauce and then separated by vegetable but it's fine. At the end of your meal you're given this deliciously sweet rice drink. It's so good and it's one of the reasons you should dine in. I wouldn't suggest the alcohol here unless you're looking for a drink that's primarily juice. The pineapple soju tasted like 30% soju, 70% pineapple juice. Overall a great place for the Lake Merritt area! I'll have to come here to try their KBBQ some time. read more

I came here for dinner with my friend on a weekday night, and we were able to find parking right in front of the restaurant. The banchan came with a cold noodle soup with a spicy and tangy sauce. I loved this noodle soup, but after having it I was pretty full and couldn't even eat that much more food. They provided a large amount of banchan, I think at least 16 dishes. We ordered the cold noodle soup, beef soon doo boo, and kalbi. The beef soon doo boo we had ordered spicy but it wasn't spicy at all. I would probably get extra extra spicy next time. Solid 4 experience. All you can eat is more than worth it's value in pricing. Service is great. Place was crowded and busy as can be. The reason I offer up 4 as opposed to 5 stars is that something seems like a simple solution for them but is left unattended to. When you walk in the door nobody is around to greet, only an iPad on the wall with Yelp pulled up to put your name on a wait list. There are also instructions on the website that no same day reservations can be made online. After an hour and a half of waiting outdoors, I went and stood by the iPad until a staff member came up to seat people in front of me and told them my wait was 3 times longer than predicted. She then informed me that someone needs to tell a staff member when they arrive and not just use the iPad. So definitely some major gaps with communication. They also took my name off the waitlist as I stood there after being told this and I had to stop another staff member to ask why it took me off so he had to place me back on. Either take reservations, put up a sign to find someone, or assign a greeter maybe...I don't know but other than that extra hour of wait time it was a good place. read more

SAMGYUPSAL! I swear, this place has the BEST samgyupsal I have ever had in my entire life. They have an All You Can Eat menu that includes several varieties of meat and marinades. But why waste the room in your belly for some mediocre bulgogi when you can have delicious, crispy, juicy samgyupsal?! Whenever I come here, that is all I order. And there was one time the waiter stopped, looked at me and said, "Just samgyupsal? Wow! That is very Korean." My face lit up! If you don't know what samgyupsal is, it is pork belly. Think bacon without it being cured. This meat is darn good, people. Plus the amount of panchan (or side dishes) this place gives you just makes the entire experience worth while. My go-to method? I place raw pieces of samgyupsal on the grill. And I don't touch them! I wait until just the right moment to flip them over. While I wait, I set up my lettuce wrap. I take a piece of lettuce, put some rice, raw garlic (it enhances the flavor of the meat), and a little kimchi. Once the meat is done cooking, I place it in my lettuce wrap, and stuff the entire thing in my mouth. I've seen it on so many Korean dramas that I consider myself a samgyupsal expert. Michelle, the head waitress is an amazing person! To Michelle - you are very friendly and nice. You made us feel welcomed and also kept us happy and entertained while we were cooking our food. The all you can eat option here is very reasonable and the items they have are great. I really recommend the thinly sliced brisket, the LA style short ribs (dinner), the pork belly and the calamari. Their meat items do not disappoint. I would recommend coming here every time you have friends and guests over and they are starving. I didn't do the buffet since my stomach wasn't up to the challenge. One thing I noticed about this particular Korean restaurant is the amount of sides they give you. I counted 18 in all. I'll keep this review short since I only tried a few select dishes. * Tofu soup = yummy yummy in my tummy. I keep it the normal spicy level. If you ask for mild, it's bland in my opinion. * Bimbimbap = Always a good go-to item at a Korean restaurant I'm unfamiliar with. One of my favorite Korean items and the fishiness was just right at this place. * Spicy pork = Grilled in the back, this is one sensational item.
