On a busy Tuesday morning this place was packed. We waited about 10 minutes before we were sat. The servers keep the flow going to avoid long wait times. Upon entering, the first thing you see is the fresh baked pies and cakes...yummy. The portions of the breakfast plates was plenty and delicious. From the chicken fried steak to pork chops and eggs the food was on point. Save room for the sweet stuff. The lemon meringue was amazing. It was served still warm from the oven with delicious flavor. With the small town vibe they make you feel like you're a local. Definitely returning for more on my next trip south.
Their parking? Bleh. Their price point? Meh. Their pie crust? Oh hell yeah. Came in with a small group early on a Wednesday afternoon maybe an hour before closing, and most of the tables were still filled with diners. We were seated right away in the way way back of the restaurant. The layout and decor of the place gives it a classic, borderline kitschy vibe. You can tell it's a place that's managed to hold its own for like 60 years (!!!). The server was friendly, overall service was prompt, and the portions were solid. I got the quiche of the day, which was ham and cheese, and it was amazing. It came with a side (salad was fresh and crisp) and a muffin -- their raspberry streusel muffin was so delicious and a perfect dessert to tie the meal together. I would definitely get this special again, and look forward to trying their other versions of both quiches and muffins. Others at my table got strawberry pancakes, a pastrami sandwich, and chicken fried steak. All food was devoured, so I take it that it was good. However, I really think that the baked goods make this place. So if you go, don't skip out on those.
Omg, i had to wrote another review. Was meeting a friend from out of town coming in from Long Beach Airport. It was the perfect location. We enjoyed a great lunch. The Obion rings had me off a delicate tempura-like batter not the beer batter or breadcrumb fry I'm accustommed to but pretty good. Of course, i had to try the Lush Pie. This was probably the best lemon pie dessert ever! So good, my friend had to order her own dessert. Looks like a popular place with the locals. Service was friendly and attentive. For sure coming back! Street parking.
Me and my aunt decided to come here after hearing the great reviews on this place on a Friday morning. Parking isnt the best and we had to park down the street and around the corner but we didn't mind the walk. We came around 11 or so we put on name on the list and it took about 20-25 min before we were called back. We for a table right next to the window. Our waitress Juleni was super sweet and helpful ( she even complimented my freckles ). I ordered the chicken pot pie with side salad with Italian dressing and a hot green tea. My aunt ordered the clam chowder and turkey sandwich in squaw bread and a hot green tea also. Our food came out very quickly maybe 5 minutes or so after ordering. We both really enjoyed our meals. I haven't had a chicken pot pie in awhile and it was the perfect crust to filling ratio and very filling. The salad was really good as well. Although the restaurant was packed we didn't feel rushed and were able to catch up and spend time together which we both appreciated
It's like your local spot always a line here. They close early. The vibe is perfect place for a sit down coming home vibe. We came to celebrate my friend's birthday. They have homemade pies here. I had the soup and salad combo with a pie. It was a great deal combo. The chili was very tasty. Hard to find a good chili often times too salty.
Wow... seen this place over the years but never stopped in. Until today..... after my husband's co worker began insisting we give it a try. Omg he has right.... Obsessed...... just left after breakfast and already thinking of when I will be back. Breakfast was amazing desserts here look amazing. I was stuffed and didn't try anything this time. The lines here are out the door. We were lucky and spotted 2 empty chairs at the counter n sat right away. Our server Roger was great. My primary care doctor is close by.... Next week and I will stop by here again :) FIY: ambiance here is tight in case you don't like crowded seating this might not be the right spot for you. (There is outside seating but it was closed today)
This is an iconic place for anyone who grew up in the LBC. I have been here a few times and every visit, the service and food is amazing. Because it is so popular, it can get busy and since it is a bit small, you may need to wait, but it is well worth the wait. A few of my favorite dishes include the country fried steak, french toast, chicken pot pie, and the homemade pies. There is such a great variety of food that I am sure you will have no problem finding something to your liking. As you sit in the cafe, you can get some free smells of all their homemade pies. My favorite is the peach pie, it is fruity, fresh, flavorful, and pairs well with a scoop of ice cream. If needed, you can always take a pie home if you are too full from your entree. The staff here are so nice and often times, you will find the owners helping out during busy peak days. They are attentive and quick to serve. Every time has been great so I highly recommend if you are looking for some great breakfast or an early lunch. This is a Long Beach staple, so don't miss out!
I'd been putting off dining in because there always seems to be a line, but I finally made it and wow, I get the hype now. We arrived just a few minutes after opening and it was already filling up. The food is amazing. I ordered the turkey, spinach, and cheese omelet with added mushrooms, and it was perfection. I also shared the banana pancakes with my sister-in-law and stole a few bites of my boyfriend's biscuits and gravy. Every flavor was memorable! And let's not forget the homemade jam. If you have the option to get toast, try the sourdough and absolutely drench it in that jam..trust me. Despite how busy it looked, the service was quick, and the food came out fast. The place seems small when you first walk in, but there's extra seating in the back, so they keep things moving efficiently. Overall, totally worth the wait. I'm already planning my next visit.
I can't believe I'm just now writing a review, considering I've been coming here since the mid-'90s. Bake N Broil is truly a neighborhood gem. If you don't believe it, just drive by and watch the number of people waiting outside--and inside--for a table. They don't take reservations, which is a bit of a bummer, but honestly, it's usually worth the wait. I've always ordered breakfast, and everything I've had over the years has been consistently good. My go-to orders are the diced ham & eggs, banana nut pancakes, and the ABC omelette. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. They used to be open until 8pm, so I was surprised on a recent Sunday visit to learn they now close at 2pm for dine-in. They do remain open for takeout only until around 7pm or 8pm. Parking can be a little challenging. There's limited street parking, plus a lot behind the restaurant. Back in the day, you could park in the church lot across the street, but I'm not sure if that's still allowed. Oh and can't forget about the baked goods. Lemon lush pie, the muffins, and slice of red velvet cake- So good! Overall, I'm glad to see that after all these years, the food and service are still exceptional.
Where do I even begin? I've been coming to Bake-N-Broil for over a decade now, and it's safe to say I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the place. The love part is easy...the food, the staff, and especially the desserts keep me coming back. The hate part? The wait. No matter when you come, expect at least a 30-minute wait. You write your own name down on the list and hope to hear it called before you start craving dessert for lunch. Honestly, I wish they had an attendant to help with check-ins -- it would make the experience feel a little more cared for and organized. That said, the staff has always been friendly, helpful, and upbeat, which makes up for a lot. The food is consistently solid -- slightly above standard -- and you really can't go wrong with most of the menu. But let's be real: the stars of the show are the desserts and baked goods. The red velvet cupcake is hands-down the best I've ever had -- 10/10. No one else even comes close. The lemon lush pie is another standout -- creamy, perfectly tart, and absolutely unforgettable. You'll never think about the old tired lemon meringue again. On my most recent visit, my server was Juleni, who was an absolute gem -- sweet, attentive, and genuinely kind. I tried the cheeseburger for the first time and would give it a solid 7/10. Great presentation, though the patty could've used a bit more seasoning and the bottom bun was a little soggy. Will I be back? Absolutely. After more than 10 years, Bake-N-Broil still has my heart (and my sweet tooth). I love Bake 'n Broil so much I go there for my birthday every year. I always say if you can do a good classic American breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon & hash browns you're the one. & they really are it. Their seasonal menu smacks and their food is top tier. They got homemade jam on the tables y'all! Plus lots of baked goods to buy. Haven't tried their lunch menu, but for breakfast it hits. *Street Parking easily accesible *Can be a bit of a wait on the weekends but worth it IMO *Make sure your whole party is there or you'll have to wait to be seated! *Service always attentive & nice
Always five stars in my opinion. I changed it up today and had a sandwich I haven't had before. I had the special roast beef sandwich. It comes with red onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and a delicious Horseradish spread. The roast beef was tender and perfectly done, pretty and pink. The last five or so times that I've been here, I always have the applesauce which is delicious and I've never had any like it, spicy and not too sweet. My friend had the half sandwich, soup or salad and pie special. She had a tuna salad sandwich on squaw bread, she said it was delicious. We both had iced tea to drink. She had the lemon lush pie for dessert. I was told about something called a cheese pocket. They had four left and I bought them all. Two for my stepson, one for my friend and one for me. I haven't tried it yet so I can't comment on it. The service is always stellar, and our server was Zeke. He was knowledgeable about the menu, helpful answering our questions, and such a sweetheart. A definite asset to the business. The restaurant is clean and usually crowded from open to close. They have takeout until 7 PM. read more
The location is the really small breakfast/lunch location. It's a very cool place. The service was excellent and our waiter was very nice. The food was good. The Californian Chicken was good. Made well and very tasty. The vegetables beef soup was flavorful and had a wide range of vegetables. It was a great place to meet my friend for breakfast. read more

TLDR: A classic diner with a neighborhood mom-and-pop feel. White tile, black trimmings, counter service, and friendly staff create a warm atmosphere. Expect long waits on Sundays, but if you're here for the chicken pot pie, it's worth it. The rest of the menu is solid but not standout. The Food: -Famous Chicken Pot Pie, $13.95, 5/5: We were seated around noon on a Sunday and got the last one--so keep that in mind. The crust is incredibly flaky, the filling is flavorful with huge chunks of chicken, and the seasoning is perfect. This is an ideal meal on a rainy day and can easily be split between two people with medium appetites. A must-have. -Half Deli Sandwich Special, $13.95, 3/5: Comes with a cup of soup and your choice of cake or pie slice. I got a BLT on sourdough--bacon was crispy, and ingredients were fresh, but the bread got soggy quickly. A fair sandwich, but nothing memorable. -Potato Cheddar Soup, 4/5: Thick, starchy, and cheesy. Almost the consistency of potato salad. If you love carbs, this will hit the spot. -French Onion Soup, 2/5: Tastes like French onion soup but lacks seasoning and depth. Feels closer to canned soup than a proper diner-style version. Enjoyable on a cold day but wouldn't order again. -Apple Pie à la Mode, ~$5?, 2/5: I don't know the exact price since it came with the special. If you ask for ice cream on top, know that it'll be smashed into the pie, making it look unappetizing. Ask for it on the side if that matters to you. The pie itself was just okay. -Chocolate Cream Pie, 4/5: Light, balanced chocolate flavor without being overly sweet. A solid dessert option. Would I Return? Yes, but mainly for the chicken pot pie--it's hands down the best I've had. If you're craving that, don't mind a little wait, and enjoy a cozy diner atmosphere, this place is worth visiting. I haven't been here in years but today gave me a great reminder of why I love this place. The muffins are amazing! Huevo rancheros had a good kick to it, super good. And the chicken fried steak was delicious. We ordered a coconut cream pie to go but I already know all there cakes & pies are chefs kiss! Jongewaard is a little restaurant on the corner of Atlantic and 37th street. There is only street parking and on the weekends it can get pretty busy. I wish I got my servers name because she was extremely nice and provided amazing service. She recommended a dish from their special menu called the "Cheese Pocket" and it was so good. It was like a cheese danish turned into a pancake with fresh fruit on top and a side of their house made strawberry syrup. The combo came with two eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage. I also liked the salsa that they make. It gave the food an extra kick. I would easily come back to this place! read more

Come on a Sunday around noon and waited for about 30 minutes for a table of two. We ordered the lemon blueberry pancake, turkey sausage spinach and Jack omelette and bacon avocado and cheddar omelette. Everything tasted fresh and good. Service was great. I recommend coming with smaller parties since there's limited seating with mostly either bar or booths and you'll likely get seated quicker. Very lively restaurant. It's a staple for a reason. I have been coming here for years and it always is perfect. The bakery counter has exactly what you need. I'm not huge on sweets, but their boysenberry pie cannot be beat. Placed an order for two pies a month in advance because of the holidays. They communicated the last day for non custom pies and were able to make it work. I also wanted a modification on their lemon meringue pie and they did it! The service is quick and super friendly. Even when the line is out the door on a weekend and they are swamped with people, the staff is beyond kind. They take the time to make sure you have what they need. They also answer the phone, which is a rare thing sometimes. Cosy and a neighborhood stable. Grab a table or a booth and get ready for amazing plates that fill up the massive plates or sweets. read more

I've been coming here for years despite it being a 40 min+. It's just that good. It's the epitome of a mom and pop place with all the friendly service you'd expect. I guess I call it an American diner type menu with all the things you'd expect like Omelettes, burgers, steak. And everything is done to perfection. Also the deserts are to die for. So many pies and cakes. All food portions are large it's a smaller restaurant with counter seating as well as a room in the back for larger parties it's very simple and clean. Anyway onto the most important thing, the food. Everything is delicious and I've tried a few things but I'm also a creature of habit and can't stop getting my favorite thing, the vegetarian omelette with jack cheese alongside seasoned hash browns and OF course, the blueberry muffin which is included. Super fluffy eggs, crispy hash browns (You need to ask for crispy) and a buttery flaky muffin. It's just perfection. They have the normal condiments like ketchup and Tabasco but they have salsa which I add on in spoonfuls to give it even more flavor. Everything is great and you won't be disappointed in flavor or portion size. The pricing is amazing as well. Something even close to this costs $20+ in most places. the only downside is the wait. They're only open a limited amount of hours and because it's so popular, the wait can be long. My tip would be to sit at the counter if you're ready to eat and don't want to wait as it's first come first serve so you could be seated really quick. I love this place and will be back when I can. I came here for a weekend breakfast at 9:30. My party arrived ten minutes earlier, and it made all the difference in terms of getting seated at a table. As I was walking toward the restaurant, I saw a line of people waiting outside. I didn't see my friends; however, it turned out they were already seated. They told me that after they checked in, a large party of people came rushing in to add their names. The interior of the restaurant feels like home. Not only did it feel cozy, but the server (or the manager or owner) was entertaining, making small talk about telling my pregnant friend that she needed to name the child Alan if the water broke at the restaurant. Sadly, his wish didn't come true, as we left the restaurant incredibly full. What I ordered: BREAKFAST BURRITO (Choice of bacon or sausage, hash browns, beans, cheese, tomatoes, ranchero sauce, sour cream, and green onion) - I was indecisive between this and the French Toast. However, when the server explained that the BEANS and the SALSA are COOKED IN-HOUSE, I had to try it. The item also came with a side, which I asked for the Blueberry Muffin. It tasted similar to a cornbread with blueberries. The burrito was MASSIVE, and I had to work with a fork and knife. Each bite of the burrito tasted FRESH, like a home-cooked meal with very little sodium in the food, which I appreciate. Also, the salsa was ridiculously GOOD, as I finished over half of the bottle on my burrito plate. read more

This is by far my favorite breakfast spot! I already went twice in 1 week because as soon as I left I was already craving it lol food and service was amazing both times. There is a bit of a wait but it is well worth it. I ordered cappuccinos, huevos rancheros, French dip sandwich and their burger, everything was delicious! Their muffins are to die for and served warm with butter! Also enjoyed their French toast cheese pocket which I highly recommend! If you're looking for a great breakfast/brunch spot, look no further! This casual dining eatery is an LB staple! It gets super busy during the weekends during brunch time, so be prepared to wait. There's plenty of outdoor seating to catch some sun while you're waiting for your party to be called. I've had the pleasure of trying an array of items from Bake n Broil, and the following are my favorites: * Breakfast burrito ($13.50)- I've ordered this multiple times and it has yet to disappoint me. It's delicious with sausage and the ranchero sauce gives it a nice mild spice. The best part is the crunchy hashbrowns inside! * Coffee cake ($4.25)- The most moist, buttery, warm, comforting coffee cake I've ever had! Mixed with a ball of slightly salty melted butter, it's DIVINE * Cheese pocket ($4.95)- Warm cream cheese enveloped in flakey dough with a sugar glaze. This was a tad too sweet but delicious nonetheless. A nice pastry to share since it's so rich I didn't quite enjoy the chicken fried steak that I ordered once because the breading was soggy and lacking in flavor. I did enjoy the chocolate chip muffin that came with it, though. I will definitely be back to try their lunch menu and update with a new review! read more
I have passed this place so many times and decided to go in today for brunch. Arrived at 10am and this places was packed (which is a good indicator for a weekday). You add you name and party size to a list and wait to be seated. We waited for almost an hour (yes I waited because at this point I was committed). There is outdoor tables but it looks like that was being used for those that were waiting. Counter seating is first come, so if you're by yourself you stand a chance of being seated quickly. Their menu included breakfast, lunch and dinner items (for to go). Food came out quickly and portions are large (boxes the other half to go). They have cakes pies and pastries available as well. My husband always gets very emotional when we drive by this spot because whenever his mom would visit the States, he would bring her here and they would enjoy time together over breakfast and some delicious cake. She passed away many years ago, yet this place is still special to him because of this memory. His favorite here is the German Chocolate Cake. I've never visited this establishment and one day when we were driving by we decided to stop by to see if they have his favorite cake available. As we approached the front door, a white-haired gentleman opened the door and he said that they were closed and they were mopping the floors, but he would gladly assist us with something to-go if we knew what we wanted. He held the door open, while listing the items they had left and reminding us to be careful not to step on the wet floor so that we wouldn't slip. I've worked in the restaurant/service/hospitality industry my whole life. This was such a classy move! I don't know who this guy is. Maybe the owner or maybe one of the employees, but it doesn't really matter. This felt good. This felt like a friend, like a family member. It was special, warm, kind, welcoming and every other adorable word and feeling one can imagine and say. I think many people wouldn't even notice this. I did. I am not surprised that my husband has memories which stir emotions for him about this place. They were out of his cake that day and I am not particularly one to have a sweet tooth, but any time I drive by, I stop by and pick up few slices of cake for my husband and I don't even look at the line or the price, but I feel like I am family to a degree and I am so happy to give them my business. read more
Edited 11-4-2024 I returned because they charged me for a slice of pineapple cake on my bill that I didn't receive - I noticed it upon returning home I called immediately and they said to bring my receipt I wasn't sure what day I'd return they said no problem. I tell the server what happened before and that I'll accept a slice of cake for that missing cake and bought another slice which I paid $5.15 And the older man who I have seen working here well over two decades I know him but of course he doesn't know me ( lol ) he gave me such attitude questioning me saying there's a procedure who did I speak to we have procedures for stuff like this we write it in this book - etc etc all this drama -- despite having my receipt I also made an updated review the same day I had lunch which I showed him and he wasn't hearing it because he's soo irritated with me - he was still annoyed saying I'd have to wait for them to slice me a piece of cake and it took him 30 minutes with me watching people come and leave over and over yuup he sure made me wait to pay me back for not following protocol lol omg I was whatever bro. I felt like he implied I was lying for something free gtfoh like really dude I have been a customer for two plus decades he can take his nasty attitude somewhere else he was just a nasty dry no personality having passive aggressive thin skinned piece of work taking his job a lil too seriously. See my prior reviews for more details on other foods that I have eaten. One things for certain the food at Jongewaard's is always consistent what you tasted lasted year or 10 years ago it has the same flavor the food is consistently good as usual I have my favorites almost always ordering the same thing whenever I dine in or out. I have lived in Bixby Knolls over 34 years and most often walked or drove over there for lunch and dinner. Today's visit was for lunch it wasn't very crowded which is extremely unusual this place is always packed for breakfast lunch and dinner. I decided on sandwich and chose soup a cold tuna sandwich and a cup of clam chowder. Tuna sandwich was standard with lettuce and tomato very good but needs a bit more mayo for creaminess I love mayonnaise I sprinkled on a little seasoning the tuna was a little bland it came with one pickle spear ( ask for extra this pickle is sour and tasty ) the soft multigrain wheat bread was hearty and delicious. Clam chowder. Thick and rich seasoned very well there weren't too many potatoes or clams but enough to still have a hot creamy bowl of deliciousness I would suggest the chef to add more clams and potatoes. Small side salad with blue cheese dressing on the side and also a side of extra croutons this salad is simple it has butter lettuce shredded carrots and tomatoes with bomb a croutons garlicky and crunchy soo good. I took my salad to go so be sure and get all your croutons on the side a few of mine were semi soggy but they still tasted so good. Desserts. Jongewaards has legendary desserts my word they have dessert that will definitely hit the sweet spot. I chose German chocolate cake Tender cake and creamy thick frosting crunchy with pecans and coconut it's soo good perfect on that cake it's my all time favorite I order a slice every time I visit. Lemon lush pie What can I say it's heaven a lemony lemon curd thick and sweet whipped cream cheese light and delicious topped with whipped cream the crust has nuts and it's soo good. You can call in and order cakes lies cookies and more for the Holiday's '; ) On holidays I special order a Lemon Lush Pie without nuts in the crust my family loves crust with nuts I do as well but prefer it without nuts. If you're craving French toast this is the place to be! I got the strawberry option and a friend had pancakes, gigantic very delicious and fluffy and fresh hash browns. Unfortunately not so much for coffee cause they don't have flavored creamer nor do they have almond milk for a latte... Service is always great eventhough there's always a wait. read more

Bake n Broil isn't just a restaurant--it's a Long Beach institution and a place that holds so many special memories for me. I used to work here, and it was truly one of my favorite jobs ever. The family that owns it is incredible, and the warmth and care they put into this place are felt in every meal and every interaction. The food? Absolutely delicious, homey, and comforting. The burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast dishes are always spot-on, but let's be real--the baked goods are the stars of the show. The cakes and pies are unmatched! Even though my mother-in-law is an amazing baker, I still find myself ordering from Bake n Broil because nothing else quite compares. I don't live as close anymore, but I make it a point to stop by whenever I can. If you've never been, do yourself a favor and go. You'll be treated like family and leave with a full heart (and probably a box of baked goods for later!). read more
We were first timers and I've lived in Long Beach all my life. This place is always busy and I had a few people highly recommend. Parking can be a challenge, it's street parking. There was a pretty long line at 11am but I realized the counter dining is first come first serve, so we snagged 2 seats right away! Our server was super! Didn't catch his name, medium long blond hair, young guy! He was on it! Friendly too! Dessert before breakfast, yeeessss! Chocolate chip and blueberry were sooo good! I ordered the huevos rancheros, they were ok. Not bad, but not the best! I wouldn't order them again. A lady next to me recommended the chicken fried steak, I'll have to try that next time and also their pancakes! My daughter had the egg and ham scramble, the ham was delicious! I randomly found this place on yelp, or it found me. Whatever it was, I'm so grateful for the for the experience. The reviews mention wait time, so I expected it but I only waited about 10 min on a Monday at 2pm. I can see that the wait could be long especially on the weekends! My waiter Michael was superb! Polite, attentive, respectful, and always had a smile on his face. I also overheard some of the guys in the kitchen conversations. It's very warming to hear healthy banter amongst employees. Although I'm sure they have their moments lol Overall, I think this place is definitely a must try. There's several other items on the menu that I want to try & the prices are fairly decent too!! The service is absolutely nice here. I asked the waiter if it would be alright if my daughter and I waited outside so we could play and he came and got us when it was our turn to be seated. We got a lemon blueberry pancake to share. I like that it wasn't too sweet and the texture was nice and soft. Round Cakes serve 12-15, 1/2 Sheet Cakes serve 24-36.

They do not take reservations. But there is also counter seating so you can skip the line. It's first come, first serve so there may be a little wait.

I would cook it for 30 mins in a preheated oven 375-400 depending on your oven. Check with a butter knife to see if it ready to remove from the oven...
Do they take reservations?

Why was the restaurant closed this evening? Drove all the way from south orange county for dinner here. The hours said open until 830.

I just called to try and place an order to pick up a cake for 12/22. The lady informed me the last day is the 21st. But then online it says we can place an order online for orders the week of Christmas? I'm confused
