Hummus w/ sliced tomatoes, Moroccan seasoning, evoo, & salt on Whole Grain Wonder
    Lisa K.

Can't believe I haven't already 5-star reviewed Josey Baker Bread. I was out on the SF Double-Cross walk and although this spot is a bit off of the trail, I was willing to add an extra mile to stop by and get a great piece of Josey Baker Bread toast and a Four Barrel Coffee. As always, there was a long line, but I didn't mind because there's obviously a reason for the line. Delicious toast, treats, and coffee. Today I ordered the VII - Hummus with sliced tomatoes, Moroccan seasoning, evoo, and salt on Whole Grain Wonder. YUM! I also picked up the last loaf of Country. I didn't arrive until after 2PM so I was lucky to get a loaf. Staff is always friendly, and they are always busy, but never frazzled. Bathroom is clean. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. New artwork is showcased inside of the walls when you walk in and in the area where you wait for your order. I'm not sure how often the artwork/artists are switched out, but it's always great to see whatever is showcased.

My husband and I decided to get coffee and a quick breakfast before heading to Alamo Park to walk around and take a picture of the Painted Ladies houses. We stumbled across this bakery and were extremely pleased with the outcome. I ordered coffee and a ham and cheese croissant, delicious. My husband ordered hot tea and the number 7 which was toast with hummus, cauliflower and something else (he forgot). He said all ingredients were fresh and it really delicious. If you're coming to Alamo park or to see the Painted Ladies houses, i definitely recommend coming here to pick up a quick bite and bringing it to Alamo park for a quick picnic. You will not be disappointed.

Josey is my favorite bakery for bread of all time. The sourdough is flavorful. The outside is crunchy while the inside was soft and moist. I've never had bread this moist before and the best part is that it keeps moist for a few days. Will definitely be back for more.

The bread. WOW. Seriously, in a city that says it's famous for sour dough, the bread here is a standout. They grind all their own flour in house... blah blah blah. Just go and eat the bread. The loafs are warm and fresh and the croissants would sit right next to a Parisian cousin and you couldn't tell the difference. On top of that, they are a serious coffee house and they make breakfast. This is "my" local place when I come back to SF.

Oatmeal loaf (very moist and wet interior)

Their fresh bread is really hearty and flavorful! We first bought an oatmeal loaf, not realizing that the texture inside is very wet and moist. We sent it back thinking it was undercooked/raw, but they reassured us it is supposed to be that way due to the oats. I wish we were notified somehow (maybe describe texture/appearance on the label) because a perfectly good loaf was wasted :(

If you're looking for the epicenter of the hipster culture it would be here at Josey Baker. This is the cafe made famous for the expensive avocado toast. This place makes bread 12 varieties today. Just go to the shelves and help yourself to a loaf and pay the cashier Beverages can be had here as well. Sit inside the cafe to observe the "scene" or sit outside at the parklet just in front of the entrance. The long table allows more people to sit and sets a community feel to the place. I wish I could have a couple of their chairs for home. Super cute! The front windows look out onto Divisadero Street, that hopping thoroughfare that's blowing up in terms of popularity. If you were here sitting with me, you'd feel the pulse of music down to your soles. Or ignore the scene and concentrate on a book or your mobile phone and tune out. In this neighborhood not dropping into Josey Baker for a look is an opportunity wasted so I say do it if you're nearby. Because when all is said and done the bread here is delicious!

I heard about this place and wanted to give it a try. I arrived at around 5:30 pm only to find a sign saying that pizza is only served from 6-9pm. Bummer! But the garlic knots are served all day so I ordered one of those. The $3 covers only 1 garlic knot with sauce. I also purchased the cranberry and Walnut sourdough bread. The bread loaf tasted ok. There was a good amount of ingredients but it wasn't that sour even though it had a sourdough culture. The garlic knots are pre-made and just toasted when ordered. The marinara sauce was delicious, it wasn't bitter or bland. The garlic knot was just ok. It didn't have much garlic flavor. And they put cold parmesan cheese after they take the garlic knot out of the oven.... So the cheese didn't melt, it just fell off the garlic knot as I was eating. I was feeling thirsty so I walked down the street and grabbed a boba. As I walked past the bakery again, I noticed it was 5:59pm, so I decided to stop in for a side of pizza. There are 2 flavors to choose from, and I decided to get the cheese to really judge the pizza on the simplicity. The pizza was warm and hot out of the oven. It was a bit greasy for my liking. The marinara sauce was again good, and I wish the pizza had more on it. They put salt on the crust to give it more flavor. Honestly I think if there garlic knot had similar flavor to the crust, I would've enjoyed it more. Overall food was ok. Service was a bit slow I would come back to work or read a book as they have plenty of seating. Didn't try any drinks so I can't connect on that.

I love artisan breads and my friend wanted me to try a loaf of country bread from Josey the Baker. Having never heard of this bakery, I determined that it is a small team of bread bakers who specialize in freshly milled whole grain sourdough. The loaf of country bread had some heft to it, weighing 24 ounces. The wheat bread had a crusty and nutty tasting outside and the inside was chewy, yet soft and fluffy. It is perfect warmed up with some butter on it. So delicious and the love the heartiness of it. With how tasty the country bread was, I will need to drop by the shop and try their other breads. This is high quality artisan bread.

I don't like the vibe of The Mill, but I really like Josey Baker (his real name!) Bread. I happened upon Josey's cookbook at the SF Public Library and was really intrigued. His recipes use bread starter, and I am too lazy for that so I stopped by The Mill to check out the bread loaves for sale on the large rack. His breads are hefty and delicious. If you have your heart set on a particular loaf, you might want to check with the staff because they can sell out. The Mill does a great job highlighting the bread that the talented team works hard to produce. The toast is nicely toasted for the avocado toast. The egg and toast was my favorite. On another note, I noticed that Josey Baker Bread has donated loaves of bread to seniors who receive meals on wheels food and I think that's lovely.

While exploring this neighborhood seeking my yelper reviews..I checked this place out. Nice coffee place with some hearty wholesome grain breads. Especially after a good workout In the nearby Alamo park and after checking out "the Painted ladies". Tried their yummy #4 toast (whole grain) with peanut butter and coffee. Thank you yelpers- nice suggestions - check out this nice cool place Please note - the name of the place it appears is now called "The Mill"...they have small outdoors seating as well.

I will go out of my way for a hearty gluten-free bread (stone age bread). Only down side here is the limited parking but Alamo square park is worth walking from to get here.

I cannot get enough of Josey Baker and his bread!!! His book is fantastic too. I had to buy 2 copies so I could get it signed!!!! I left my first one at home. Comparing his bread to Tartine, Jane the Bakery, Acme and Boudin, Josey's wins out every time!! Love the pepper/parm bread!!

I arrived shortly after 10:00 AM and was 4th in line with people continuing to get in line behind me. A staff member would signal for the next customer to come in when she was done with the previous customer. I asked for 2 plain croissants and a chocolate almond croissant. The croissants were placed in individual bags and then a medium sized bag with a handle. The bag had an Arsicault Bakery sticker. The croissants smelled wonderful on my 40 minutes walk back. The croissants were soft and flaky on the outside and the preserve found its way into the layered pockets of the croissant. The croissants were well worth the walk.

I've gone a few times around 10-11 AM and gotten through the line pretty quickly, plus they've never been sold out of anything. Another plus of this location is its proximity to Golden Gate Park; when the weather is nice it's great to pick up pastries from here, find a grassy area in the park to put down a blanket, and have a mini picnic. My favorite thing to get here is the chocolate almond croissant, especially since it's fairly unique and not too many other bakeries do it. Everything is perfect from the almond filling, the flaky croissant, the crunchy baked almond filling on top, and the melted chocolate. It's pretty heavy and dense though, even when hungry I can only get through half of it. It's still good later on (even after a day or two) but nothing beats it fresh. I also like to get the plain croissant and their kouign amann. The kouign amann has the same buttery, flaky layers as the croissant and has this caramelized sugar coating that I love. Don't love their chocolate chip cookie - too much chocolate and not enough cookie. But everything else I've tried from their is so worth the drive over, line, and prices.

Definitely go early to get everything fresh, but you probably won't run into a line if you don't. Highlight of the menu was absolutely the kouign amann - it was so buttery and flaky with this caramelized sticky sweet inside, rivaled in my eyes only by the Arsicault one. We also got the seasonal one (raspberry and guava) which was also really good. The passion fruit bostock was also interesting with this spongy cakey texture with an almond topping. The banana chocolate almond croissant was another favorite of mine, it's also such a unique item and definitely a must order. We sat inside at a table so we could eat some of the pastries right away which I highly recommend - everything lost freshness after a few hours and I probably wouldn't get anything from here again with the intention of eating it later. They have a ton of cakes too, tried the chocolate mousse cake, the berry cake, and the passionfruit orange and guava cake. The chocolate mousse was my favorite and runs on the sweeter side compared to other chocolate mousse's I've had. The other two are also amazing and have a bunch of different layers. I also tried the prosciutto burrata and cherry tomato tartine - an open faced sandwich basically - which tasted good but was kind of difficult to eat, either with hands or fork and knife. Would definitely come here again both because what I tried was so good and there are so many other things there I'd want to try.
