Haven't been to this place in a very long time. I used to come here back in the days over 15-20 years ago.. Lived in the city all my life and even went to the schools in the area. I pass by this street all the time and today I decided to pay them a visit. Not sure if the owners have changed overtime but they used to sell a big cup of salsa and bag of chips for cheap and the salsa was homemade. This time, it was different. The cashier girl wasn't friendly. I even made a conversation trying to be nice but didn't get the same feedback in return. I even said I used to frequent the place back then and went to school down the street. She didn't smile and was not impressed. I asked about the salsa, the sizes and pricing. There was back and forth conversation but a lot of things weren't clear. I even kept telling her I wanted a half pint of the salsa and pointed at the container and she jotted something down. I don't think she knows what a half pint is. She stated that pico de gallo were for chips and the hot salsa was for other things. I know what the difference is. What they had was plain pico de gallo made with just chopped tomatoes and cilantro and onions. It wasn't what it used to be. It used to be homemade blended salsa. Fast forward when the order arrived, I looked in the small brown paper bag to see two small containers. One for a $2 sauce and the other for $3 small container. They charged $3 for a small 2oz pico de gallo??? NO WAY. We thought we paid for more than that. Immediately wanted to return it upon seeing the receipt. Literally just stepped out 10 seconds out the door and walked back in to return it. The girl called the owner from the back and she said they don't take refunds but they'd do it this time. Owner said it was from the health department that they're not supposed to take back food. Ummm we never touched the food we literally just stepped out the door and she was saying things that were unrelated to why we were returning it. It was overly priced! Owner said they don't do refunds but they'd do it this time only. We know that taking back food is not sanitary. We weren't asking them to put it back into their inventory. That's common sense. We returned the salsa for a refund. They can throw it away. But it seems the business was not able to afford throwing out a small 2oz little container of pico de gallo.. and made up an excuse about it not sanitary to return. Do they put it back into their kitchen? Also, they said they don't give sauce for tamales. WHAT? I've never seen a place nickel and dime everything that doesn't accompany tamales with a free small sauce...When asked she said it doesn't come with one. They charge. It was a $2 little a** cup. That is soo sad..even the tamale guy at the farmers market gives a handful for free. read more

The crispy chicken tacos here are the best I've ever had! They are reasonably priced and quite large. The hot salsa that they have is really good also. I smother these tacos in the sauce and go ham. Chicken tacos come topped with cheese, lettuce and tomato. Add some salt and it's crack-a-lackin! I ordered 50 of these bad boys ahead of time and got them in 40 minutes. This is a small, family owned business, and I have moved away from gardena, but still come here for the chicken tacos. Called the restaurant to order a couple of items for pickup. Was told that they would be ready in 10-15 mins, but the lady at the counter sent our order on a slip to the kitchen after our arrival. It seemed that they would like to make sure that the callers would actually show up to pick up (and pay) their orders. After all, we waited for over 15 minutes for the food to be ready after our arrival. It would be nice if they let customers know that they do not accept phone orders. read more

This place close so early at 6:00pm I finally made it there early to catch it open so I decided to get two soft taco and burrito ( asada) I added some onions and cilantro in it the only thing messed it up was they put salsa in it and they salsa have tomato I was mad about that and they put to much damn beans in it and less meat lol they meat have a nice taste to it . I've been coming to Josie's for over 25 years. Back in those early days, you could always get decent food for good pricing. As the years went by, the prices would steadily go up, and the quality of the food would steadily decline. There would be periods where I would not visit because of this, but I would always wind up going back. They used to sell bottled soda, and switched to a fountain drink machine. The machine rarely works and is always out of order. I even noticed months would go by, and that the machine was never fixed (yet, there's a notice that they will charge tax on refills). I mention this as an example to showcase the upkeep of the business. I always order the same thing (shredded beef tacos, medium fried) each time, and only half the time would it be cooked how I asked. Most of the time, there is hardly any meat in the tacos, and the meat would appear reheated and tough with crispy or burnt ends. It was actually rare I would get fresh meat. I would get slivers of a tomato, and a pile of lettuce. It might as well have been called a lettuce taco. Yet still, my silly behind would keep returning because I would be too lazy to cook. There was also an incident where I was sitting inside waiting for my food. One of the pictures hanging on the wall fell off the wall and onto my back. Did I sue? No. Did I get free food? No. All I received was a standard apology. Yet again, silly me still kept returning for mediocre food. I have finally reached the final straw and I will no longer be returning. A few days ago, I ordered the typical shredded beef tacos and asked for them to be medium fried. As you can see in the pictures, I received completely burnt shells. How do you even think this is appropriate to serve to someone? You could literally taste the burnt taste with each bite. Most of the shell was not edible because it was to tough to chew and I had to keep breaking it off. Now silly me spent $50+ for this. If I had had the time, I would have asked for this to be redone. I've had to do this in the past (but as you can see, I still kept returning). People do not have money to waste like this. The food is already overpriced for the quality you receive. I will be seeking a refund and considering this place a memory. I also encourage looking up the health violations with LA County, despite this place having a rating of an 'A'. Although minor violations, it's enough for me to definitely discourage a recommendation. read more

Decided to stop by and get a couple of chicken tacos and also got the special for Tuesday which was two chicken taquito plate with rice and beans and included a drink for $6 and change. The crispy chicken tacos are topped with lettuce and a slice of tomato. The tacos aren't greasy and are solid. The salsa was okay, it wasn't hot enough for me. The chicken taquitos are topped with guacamole and sour cream. I liked the taquitos. The rice and beans we43 okay. The rice wasn't fluffy and lacking flavor, and the refried beans were okay. If you're looking for authentic and homemade crispy tacos, this is the place! Everything about this place screams "Abuela cooked all of it". Since 1952, Josie's has been serving up Chicken Tacos. Most recently they have new management. I believe this was family owned. Before the new management, the social media and service was lacking. You can tell the difference in marketing and service since new management has taken over. The things to order here are the chicken tacos and taquitos. The beef tacos are also good (both shredded beef and ground beef). I love their salsa. 3 or 4 tacos will fill you up for the whole day. They also have daily specials which are good deals. Once a year they have an anniversary special and tacos are like $1. I noticed the chicken is dark meat and breast mixed now. Before it was chicken breast. However, the taste is still fresh. This is my first time at Josie's Place. I was having a bit of a moment and one of my closest friends told me about this place. Her goal was to get my mind off of things (that's a good friend for ya). Well, I am happy she sent me here. The ambiance is nice and cozy. I ate my food inside and could see myself coming back to treat myself. The service was impeccable and the man behind the counter was kind (wish I got his name as that is important). Anyway, the taquitos was the comfort food and cure I needed to get me out of my funk! Josie's Place has been around for 69 yrs and locals seem to love this spot. The recommended thing to get here are their famous crunchy chicken tacos. We got the chicken tacos and taquitos. Loved it. Beans and rice were very good too. Wish they had a better salsa tho. Their red salsa tasted more like a gazpacho.
