On a Saturday morning at 11am was a bit of a line around the corner but it wasn't too bad, maybe 20 minutes, and once you're inside time passes quickly looking at the bakery case. We tried the pain au chocolat, Cubano croissant, black sesame kouign amann and regular croissant. The texture of the regular croissant was lightly crisp on the outside and flaky inside, though not as buttery and rich as we hoped. The pain au chocolat and kouign amann were great pastries with a subtle sweetness. The Cubano was easily the best with an incredibly tender croissant and savory sandwich flavor.
Labor Day line was a bit daunting, but always worth the wait. Was very tempted by the Tomato Bomb but opted for old reliable lemon choux.
I'd been looking forward to trying Juniper - mainly for the black sesame kouign amann - but also to check out the hype (all of my friends and coworkers told me that I must visit). I ventured to Juniper during the late morning rush, and while there was a line out the door, it moved quickly and the bakers were hard at work keeping the pastries stocked throughout the morning. As I waited in line, I admired the impressive selection of sweet and savory croissants. Since I visited during the summer, many of the pastries featured fresh tomato and stone fruits. While I was tempted to try one of each, I was on a mission during this visit to try the black sesame kouign amann. When I placed my order at the counter, I was served a fresh-from-the oven kouign amann - this rarely happens! I couldn't resist trying a piece as I left the bakery, and it was indeed exquisite. The black sesame kouign amann from B. Patisserie is my gold standard, and Juniper's version is a close contender. While the black sesame flavor is much lighter and the texture fluffier than the B. Patisserie version, I liked the abundance of the crispy edges (as well as the year-round availability). I will certainly be back to try more of Juniper's pastries.
Visited on a Sunday afternoon around 11AM, and the line wrapped around the store. The line moved fairly fast (~15 min wait), and there were menus posted outside the door to look at while waiting. They still had all their items in stock, including the seasonal fruit danish and elote danish. I opted to try the cubano croissant since it was labeled as award winning on the menu. I was surprised to find a decently thick cut of pork inside the croissant, since most croissants are typically rolled with thinly sliced pieces of meat. The croissant was flaky and buttery. Definitely a must try for a savory option. There are a few tables at the back of the bakery to chat/eat but it can get crowded when people are waiting for their items. Solid spot for delicious pastry items!
Came here on a weekend afternoon and there was a healthy line outside. It moved quickly though, and they were still making fresh pastries! We tried a few different croissants - the pain au chocolat, cubano croissant, tomato bomb, and breakfast sandwich. All of the croissants were really good with a nice crispy texture. I preferred the sweet croissants over the savory, but having both was a nice balance. The staff were really friendly and we were luckily able to find some seating inside. A nice place for a quick breakfast/brunch!
Unfortunately today I will have to give a 3 when it is usually a strong 4 to 5. I think their system of waiting in the back of the line if you're ONLY going to get a drink is inefficient. I usually don't want a pastry, just a drink but to wait in the long line and behind people who are taking their time (as they should) picking their pastries and when there is usually another person available is, again, inefficient. I'm sure with the obviously incredible creativity they have in making their pastries they can spare some to come up with an alternative more streamlined system for a drinks only line.
Came here on sunday around 11 and the line was around 15 mins. I got the regular croissant and the ham and cheese croissant. Both were good. There are about 10 small tables inside the bakery and some bar seatings by the window. Will come back for their other pastries if I'm around but probably won't make a trip out of my way here.
Juniper is in my top 3 bakeries you must go to in San Francisco! I have been here a handful of times already and can confidently say everything I have had here has been exceptional and delicious. The pastries are all flaky and crispy, and you can tell they were crafted by a true craftsman. I think what makes Juniper so special is the selection of unique flavors they have. My favorite being their award-winning Cubano croissant, their black sesame kouign amann, and their choux pastries. I do want to call out how much I appreciate the amount of savory pastries they have since I don't always want a sweet treat the moment I wake up. To note, Juniper is typically busy, but I have never waited in line for more than 10 minutes, even on weekends. They also have a lot of tables for seating, but because of the flow of people, it might be difficult to find a spot. Stop by here if you're around the area! They are also a sister shop of Saint Frank, so you can get some coffee while you're here as well.
Juniper is a cozy little cafe on the corner of a busy street. They serve unique pastries and have a nice drink menu. Lots of variety here. Service was a 5/5. I was instantly greeted and personally recommended a pastry. Shout out Chris and Jess for their outstanding service! All the staff at Juniper are so friendly, you can really tell they enjoy working here. The Chai Latte was nice and creamy. I do prefer it a little stronger and less sweet, but there were no sugar adjustments. Still recommend chai lovers to try this drink. I'm not the hugest pastry fan, and with a quick glance around the room, it seems like most people just came here for the coffee and ambiance. Overall, a sweet spot to chill and do work. Next time I'll try some of their food options.

Choice of plain, ham and cheese, and bacon-something. Since it's my first time there, had to try the plain! Super cute but I was headed elsewhere so I took it to go. +++ Beautiful croissant. Even for a croissant near closing, this thing was beautiful. I've never seen gloss on a croissant like that. ++ Tasted great. Every "premium" croissant I've ever tasted just tastes like CostCo except with an extra stick of butter per croissant, and I'm not a huge fan of over-buttering things. This was rich but not overly so. Textures were amazing with crisp exterior and airy fluffy interior - so much so I had to take a photo of the half-eaten croissant just to show it off. + Interior was super cute. I was on the run so I didn't catch a photo but plenty of others from other Yelpers (thanks other Yelpers!) I'm not in the City often but if I was in the area, I would totally bring folks by.
I've seen Juniper on social media and saw I was in the area and decided to give them a try. I got the raspberry almond croissant and my boyfriend got the ham & cheese croissant with a cold brew. I was a bit hesitant because I'm not the biggest raspberry fan, but I really enjoyed it! The almond and raspberry paired really greatly together, and I could only imagine how much better it would be if it were fresh. We came at around 12:30 on a Monday and the pastry selection seemed a bit slim, but I do believe they are constantly baking items throughout the day. There's a good handful of seating indoors, and I did enjoy that they allowed you to enjoy the pastries there. Would love to try other items from Juniper in the future!
This place was lovely!! visiting from out of state and we stopped by, there was a bit of a wait but it goes by fast. Come earlier in the day as they tend to sell out towards the end of the day. The cappuccino was smooth, dark and really good. We also tried the raspberry almond croissant which was to die for, as well as a pain au chocolate and a regular croissant which were all great.
I found this lovely place by accident after walking around Polk street looking for donuts. lol I saw a line of people waiting to order and got curious. Checked out the menu and it piqued my interest after I saw words like yuzu, cubano croissant and mojo pork! Service was fast and friendly! They accommodated my request for a box (an option) but they didn't have a bag, I had to carry this beautiful box with my hand which was inconvenient but fine by me. They were definitely kind enough to help me check for available pastries in the back even tho the chances of them being gone (since it was afternoon) were high. I appreciated the effort and their willingness to do this. Overall I would recommend it! I love their croissants! Plain croissants and special ones- you can't go wrong! Ambiance is wonderful, quaint hallway with seats for you to relax. It seems it was packed when I came in so I couldn't sit and chill. Perhaps another time when I am in the neighborhood I can just relax and enjoy a book with great pastries.

Had heard about Juniper from going to the Best Croissant Competition in May of last year and I was so excited to go back to try more of their baked goods. Most often, they ran out of their most popular items such as the Cubano very early in the morning but luckily, my friend was able to get some during the weekday. The Cubano Croissant - One of the most creative and best savory croissants I have ever had. The outside is flakey and has nice strips of crisp layers surrounding it. The inside has pork, ham and cheese which makes it very inviting and warm. The pickle and french mustard add the more sour tangy elements, making it taste fresh and reminiscent of the Cubano sandwich. I also tried a little bit of the pain au chocolat and the sweet croissant loaf with sesame which both were made so well. The pain au chocolat had a decent amount of chocolate and a nice flakiness. The sesame bread was soft and layered well with the nutty, sweet sesame flavors. Probably one of my favorite bakeries in San Francisco and I love seeing their creative takes on baked goods. read more
I was only interested in raspberry almond croissant $6.76 Was told in 10 min it will come out of the oven. We'll, I got to wait, no choice. Fresh piping hot, crunchy, slivers of crispy almonds. Can't beat that. I scarfed it down. The enjoyment of eating and walking. Can't help to multi-task. Lots of melty raspberry inside. I would have liked some meaty chocolate but not so. Update: Excellent baked goods, now that I've tried more of their menu I have concluded my favorite is not their croissant but their choux au craquelin closely followed by their financier. service is nice and love their cobalt blue accents. there's a good amount of seating inside. read more

Heard this place won best croissant in the city and boy was I impressed! Stopped by on a late saturday morning and was greeted with racks of fluffy croissants and a variety of different pastry fillings. The bakery was very busy but luckily the line was short and they still had plenty of pastries. We got the cubano and black sesame croissants -- both were incredibly flakey and buttery. The cubano had pork and ham that was very tender and paired incredibly well with the cheese and mustard inside. The black sesame flavor in the black sesame croissant was noticeable but not overbearing and I liked how it was crunchier and more firm. Also tried their vanille latte and it was very good. There was lots of seating and free WiFi for working. Can't wait to come back and try more of their other croissants! read more
Checked out the BEST croissant in the city! They won three awards at the Best Croissant competition in San Francisco last year. The store happened to be close to where we had lunch, so we decided to have some pastries afterward. By the time we got there, they had sold out of a lot of their pastries. We had their traditional croissant, and it was very delicious. The outside was flaky and crispy, and the inside was layered and airy. We also enjoyed both seasonal drinks (orange pandan vanilla latte and passionfruit lychee spritz), and they paired with the pastries very well. The croissant was so good that we decided to go back the next morning for other popular ones. So the next day, we got there before 9, and tried their creative spin on a Cubano croissant, chocolate croissant, and corn cilantro danish. Again, it was so worth it for us to be early birds for these pastries. We are already planning our next visit... highly recommend bookmarking this cafe if you haven't been there before. Most customers take the baked goods to-go. But I chose to sit down and enjoy the fresh smell of croissants and a campfire mocha. The plain croissant is $5 each. The mocha is $8 but way too sweet. read more
I was looking for a coffee house close by to my errands and Yelp led me to Juniper. Initially I was going to get their matcha latte, but I saw they had a pumpkin latte. While it's originally made with coffee, I asked as yes, one of the non-coffee people if they could make it as a steamer. I'm so glad they abliged as the pumpkin puree was perfect and made me feel like I had truly entered the fall season. I would definitely recommend that drink in the future. Also, when I arrived I noticed there were a pleathora of crossiants still available for purchase. While I didn't eat it onsite. I enjoyed the chocolate crossiant which had a nice flanky texture. I would definitely return when running errands in the area again. read more

Had a chance to try Juniper after seeing them all over Tiktok & seeing the awards that they won! This is a cute bakery That is famous for their plain crossaint & the Cubano. Unfortunately by the time we got there the Cuban was sold out! For our order - we got: *Raspberry almond crossaint - this was delicious and loved the jammy interior from the raspberry jam which was delish with the crunchy chewiness from the croissant and almonds * ham & Cheese - I loved this croissant and scarfed it down so quickly it was THAT good. IT was nice, buttery and flakey with the perfect amount of ham and cheese. Would totally get this again! Overall, besides arsicault, this is probably the other bakery I would recommend if visiting SF! read more

The traditional croissant truly is so, so delicious. Pain au chocolat, Raspberry Almond Croissant, Yuzu Macadamia Cookie, Caramel Apple Choux were all delicious as well. The traditional croissant was definitely the star of the show though. Will come back to try other items such as their drinks and the Panettone. read more

I've wanted to try Juniper for a while, and now that I have, I can't say I was missing out on much. My friend and I stopped by at 8:30 am to grab some fresh croissants. However, we both thought the traditional croissant was dense and dry - slightly stale, even. The pain au chocolat was the better of the two, but the chocolate tasted a bit dry and it wasn't as flaky, airy, or buttery as I hoped. I also wish the pastries were served warm. Personally, I don't regret trying Juniper but I'm not rushing to come back. read more

Juniper is my favorite place to bring friends and family visiting the city! I find myself here at least once a week for the delicious pastries and coffee. My favorite thing to get here is definitely the raspberry almond croissant - it is DIVINE. I am not usually one to get pastries with my coffee, but every time I am at Juniper, I truly cannot help myself. I highly recommend any and all of their croissants, especially their chocolate one! I also love the orange cinnamon sticky bun for a sweeter treat. For coffee, they use St. Frank's beans so you know their lattes are going to be sooooo good. The seasonals are always a hit, but if you're looking for something simple -- their latte / sweet latte is my goto! If coffee isn't your thing, they have teas and other options as well. There is limited seating and almost always a line but everything moves fast -- people are constantly coming in/out. I love coming here on a Sunday morning, soaking in the sun & sipping my iced latte. I've been to Juniper a few times now and it has not let me down :) their staff are quick and friendly and there is ample seating to catch up with friends or get some work done. Coffee has been consistently good. I usually order their sweet latte which is strong with the perfect amount of sweetener. Their lattes do switch seasonally which is a cool way to try different flavors -- most recently they introduced the black cardamom and vanilla which was delicious. The croissants though are the star of the show. They are crispy, so flaky, yet light. I recently tried the chocolate banana croissant and it was to die for truly. The banana was so fresh and chocolate was decadent, yet the croissant didn't feel heavy. My fried ordered the chia seed pudding. He also got the yuzu sparkler, also a seasonal drink, and it was super refreshing! I'll be back very soon!! :) read more

Truly think Juniper has some if not THE best croissants in SF. We ordered the plain, ham & cheese and raspberry almond croissants. My personal favorite is the raspberry almond croissant it's so flaky and the raspberry adds a sour fruitiness that cuts through and makes it less heavy and sweet. I would recommend going earlier in the day because they do run out of options. Overall great vibes and lots of tables and wifi to work at too! read more
The Cubano croissant totally lived up to the hype. Kimchi bun and Choux were good, but not something I'd specifically go back for. They sell Saint Frank coffee and have a pretty basic ambiance. There are some tables and window/bar seating so it was pretty easy to find a table even though we went at 11am on a Sunday. Even if the line is long, it moves pretty quickly since the service is fast and most of the food options are grab and go (since it's a bakery). Overall, will definitely be back! read more
Can't remember why I had this spot on my bookmarks, but I'm glad I do! Right along Polk St is this cute spot that has some of the most flakiest, tasty pastries I've had. I came around 10am on a Thursday and it was busy. A lot of goodies had already sold out and all the seating was packed :-( Luckily I was able to snag a hazelnut choux and a black sesame kouign amann. Both were so delicious and gave me a new appreciation for pastries - I don't know how they've perfected the kouign amann but the flavor and flakiness blew my mind. I can't wait to come back and try out their other pastries. Everything seems promising! UPDATE: I went back recently and got iced matcha latte, pain au chocolat, and the chia seed pudding. They have high quality matcha and OH BOY the pain au chocolat was HEAVEN! read more

I loved juniper the first time I visited and have been dreaming to visit again ever since. Their coffee hits the spot! We did order 2 lattes and one was very milky and the other one was much better. We let the barista know and they added another shot of espresso for us. Their croissants are divine and I finally got my hands on the black sesame loaf whcih was amazing! The only thing I noticed was that their croissants and pastries were oily. If you left it on a piece of tissue or parchment paper you definitely see lots of oil residue, which makes me feel like I might be eating lots of butter. read more
So, I came here to try their award winning Cubana pastry but sadly this newbie think to get there until around 11am on a Saturday so they were sold out. With that said, what I did get what superb. The staff was able to recommend some alternative choices for us and gave me extra coffee for my choux flight. The choux wasn't as airy as I typically like but had good flavors and those that love tropical Asian flavors will love these. The savory pastries were my favorite! read more

I don't want to sound ridiculous, but the quality level at this place boarders on the Supernatural. I have never seen a better looking collection of pâte levée feuilletée pastries ( leavened puff pastry ) . I have never clapped for a baker before, but this morning I did , and that was before I took a bite, which also deserved an even more exaggerated applause. They serve Saint Frank coffee alongside it and the two go together like a prime+ ribeye and a rare aged cabernet . Bravo read more

My favorite BUTTER croissant in SF. It hits everything a butter croissant needs to be. Flaky, soft, airy and with a hint of sweetness inside. Perfection! Everything else I had was just alright. Their coffee is good because it's saint franks but for coffee, I do love the original location the most. I do love the blue they use for their marketing. I was a frequent flyer here during my stay in San Francisco--it was conveniently close to my hotel. The service was quick, and the pastries and breakfast sandwiches were consistently amazing. The lavender latte? Divine. I had one every day for all seven days I was in town. Seating was limited, but the bar windows made up for it--I loved people-watching while I sipped my coffee. Overall, a solid spot I'd return to in a heartbeat. read more
Let me just say Juniper seriously gets it right. I popped in on a sunny morning and ordered the avocado toast, and I'm still thinking about it. This wasn't your basic avo toast situation--it was layered with flavor, texture, and care. Creamy avocado spread thick on perfectly toasted bread (crisp on the edges, soft in the middle), topped with fresh herbs, and just the right touch of citrus. Every bite was magic. The space itself is warm and inviting, and you can tell the team takes pride in what they're doing. Everything felt intentional. I didn't expect to be blown away by avocado toast of all things, but here we are. It's that good. If you're in San Francisco, do yourself a favor and stop by. Juniper's the real deal. read more

What I ordered: 6/10: Cubano Croissant - $8.75 - croissant is very well made! buttery, flaky, and i love the crunchy strips across the shell - the filling was meh, the meat was dry and didn't taste like much - despite going at opening and eating it immediately, the croissant was a little cold :( Juniper is a bakery on the corner of Polk and Pine with a wide selection of unique pastries. There was a line at opening on a Tuesday morning but it moves quickly. The inside is pretty spacious with a few tables to sit at. Service was friendly and they even offer a healthcare worker discount :) I was unfortunately a bit disappointed by my croissant. It was good, but the filling was underwhelming. The meat was dry/tough, cold, and lacked flavor. The croissant dough itself was delicious! Buttery, flaky, and everything you could ask for in a croissant. I decided to tag along with my coworker since she wanted to stop by for some coffee. It was my first time here, so I was excited to stop by to take a look since it is really close to my work. I am not a coffee drinker, but I love pastries & croissants. The coffee shop is very spacious with lots of seats available. I noticed a lot of people with their laptops working. I noticed that they had a wide selection but wasn't sure what to get, so I asked the employee. She said she really liked the Black Sesame Kouign-Amann, so I decided to get one. I couldn't really taste the black sesame but the crust was extremely crispy. My coworker ordered a matcha latte and said it was delicious. I will be back again to try their chocolate croissant and matcha/chai latte. I think I've found one of my favorite pastries spots in the city! read more

Cute small bakery on Polk. We went on a Saturday at 9am and surprisingly there was no line! The line got long around 9:15 though. We were able to snag a cubano croissant, the black sesame kouign amann, and an elote danish. Favorites were the cubano croissant and the black sesame kouign amann -- although the elote one was delicious too! I'm not a big mustard fan but the cubano croissant had a good level of it; not too strong but enough to give a hint of flavor. The meat inside is really good too! Def a must try. The black sesame pastry was not too sweet and had a subtle black sesame flavor (not super overpowering). All pastries were super crispy and flaky and buttery! So glad I finally came here. Super fast service and a good amount of seating inside, although the space is pretty small. read more
tldr popular bakery selling extra flakey pastries with fun flavor combos at a usual sf price point aka expensive i finally made it to juniper to try their popular pastries and they didn't disappoint....there's always a line but it moves v fast with some seating and friendly staff in a modern space i ordered a black sesame kouign amann and their popular cubano croissant that came out to $15 4/5 black sesame kouign amann had a great flavor - sweet flakey crust with lots of black sesame filling making it super nutty throughout the layers - i almost wish there was a tropical fruit jam layered with the black sesame that would have made it a 5/5 5/5 cubano was great but pretty pricey - it had all the usual suspects in a cubano with a fun and creative tasty croissant vessel - i was surprised how much i enjoyed the ground mustard with the pulled pork and ham overall juniper is a solid spot for pastries among tough competition. it really stands out as its own with uniquely flakey/crusty pastry and friendly staff. i definitely had a food coma after finishing them! food 4.5/5 service 5/5 ambiance 4/5 value 4/5 read more

A friend and I visited Juniper on a Friday at 7:40 AM. There was a line, but it wasn't out the door yet, and the cafe still had plenty of open tables for seating. Upon walking in, we were greeted with an intoxicating buttery aroma. I ordered four pastries (traditional croissant, Cubano croissant, pain au chocolat, black sesame kouign amann) and three choux pastries (juniper lemon, hazelnut chocolate passionfruit, caramel apple) totalling $37. All the pastries were divine. The laminated dough was light, airy, flaky, and buttery without an overly oily/greasy feel. Juniper's traditional croissant and Cubano croissant are award winners, and once you take a bite of either, you'll taste why. Nothing beats the traditional, but the Cubano had an interesting twist on a savory pastry; I liked how the ingredients (pork, ham, cheese, mustard, pickle) were kept to a minimum so it didn't affect the rise of the laminated dough. I loved the black sesame kouign amann as well, which had just the right amount of sesame paste for nuttiness, yet the dough was still airy and buttery and not too hard from the sugar crust. The choux pastries were delicious as well, perfectly two-bite sized. I enjoyed the crispy, sweet craquelin top and each flavor were distinct and unique. Seasonal favors rotate, so I'm excited to try others. Juniper's staff is friendly and helpful if you need assistance deciding what to order. It's a cute, modern cafe that's just a bit cramped when the line gets too long since the cafe is relatively narrow. One red flag I observed during my visit was one of their sheet pan racks full of baked croissants was parked too close to the line that a customer's dog was sniffing it; luckily dog owner was observant and pulled his pup away, but I can't say other customers are as vigilant. Nevertheless, I'd definitely return to Juniper, and recommend going on a weekday morning within 30 minutes of opening for the freshest pastries and shortest line. read more

While Ariscault was named "Best Bakery in America" by Bon Appétit, I like Juniper's croissants better, they're not as heavy and greasy. Cubano Croissant: fun twist on your standard croissant with a ton of flavor from the meat to the cheese to the pickle even. The croissant itself was a bit dry after they reheated it. I knew I had to give this place a try after I heard they won the croissant competition. They have some of the prettiest flaky pastries in the city and I can't wait to go back to try the black sesame kouign-amann. I ended up ordering the Cubano Croissant and they were nice enough to reheat the croissant too. All in all, a great bakery to drop by when you're in Nob Hill. No surprise this place is five stars - their plain croissant won best croissant in SF.. maybe in the nation?! I opted to try a few different pastries, all were delicious! I think my favorite was the ham and cheese, followed by the chocolate croissant and then the orange cinnamon sticky bun. The staff were very kind and there is limited seating inside. They also have water cups which feels essential to me when eating a tasty pastry! This place rivals Arsicault and the line was not as long. I'm sure we'll be back! read more
Utterly delightful. Can't go wrong with anything in the pastry case! We arrived around 945a on Saturday and there was just a short line that did not even extend past the door. By 11a the line was a bit longer but still less than 10min wait time. Really beautiful and some unique viennoiserie and pastries, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The mushroom danish cannot be missed!!! Hazelnut passion fruit choux is quite special, passion fruit filling is tart and flavorful and the slight crisp of hazelnut was just delicious. Chocolate croissant has THREE bars of excellent chocolate and is perfect with coffee. Highly recommend! read more
