I eat sushi at least twice a week if not more. I've been to the most expensive spots, hole in the wall spots, and everything in between. This place is my new favorite sushi spot in OC! The omakase was one of the best I've ever had, we got so lucky that the owner was there and cooked for us! The fish was so fresh and the service was great too. It's a small restaurant so they are very attentive. The only thing to know is that the parking lot is small and fills up quickly, so get there early to find parking or Uber/lyft! read more

I could go on for days about how amazing the food is, but I'll get straight to the point; The food is YUM! I still have moments of savoring the flavors in my mouth. The customer service is very accommodating. We sat at the bar area and the restaurant had no reservations about letting my 8 and 11 year sit there. My kids loved their experience there too as they felt comfortable enough to order and request some items on their own; This usually doesn't happen. Again... so good! Make sure to make a reservation, we did same day with no issues, a small intimate space. Premium omakase is a 10/10. Must try! Favorite dishes if you want to be selective... the mini bowl (uni & ikura) was hands down my favorite. The Santa Barbara uni was so sweet and creamy and I watched the sushi chef process the ikura in front of me... bomb.com. The scallops were so plump and sweet, definitely wanted to order a second one. I first heard of K's Bistro from a friend of mine who absolutely loves this restaurant. Located in Costa Mesa, K's Bistro is within a fairly small plaza with ample parking spots. If you're unable to find parking in the lot, there's also a lot of street parking available! However, if you go on a Friday/weekend night, and if the nearby Arena is crowded then you will have a difficult time finding parking. The restaurant itself is very small with limited tables and bar seating available. This makes it more intimate; however, it can mean longer wait times especially if you come during a busy hour. I came in a group of four, and without a reservation it took us over an hour to finally get seated. One critique I have regarding the service is that we never got any updates on our wait time. We were originally told that we would wait for 30 minutes, but after 30 minutes passed, they kept adding an additional 20 minutes without even asking for our names to check. For the food, I ordered the fatty tuna belly, amberjack, salmon, red snapper, and bluefin tuna nigiris, each one piece. For the table, my friends and I shared creamy salmon roll and the Santa Monica roll. This amount of food was a good amount to have me satisfied, but not completely stuffed. All of my friends and I ordered the same amount and we all were satisfied. Each of the nigiri pieces were so fresh and some of the cuts, especially the fatty tuna belly, would just melt in my mouth! I also appreciated how meticulous they were with their presentation of each of the dishes. You could immediately tell from the nigiri that their sashimi was so fresh! The rolls were also so delightful. I loved how the creamy salmon roll was so refreshing with the hint of citrus that coated each of the rolls, while the Santa Monica roll also had a tangy kick from the ponzu! For dessert, I ordered the panna cotta, and it was definitely the perfect way to end the meal. It was so soft and the perfect amount of sweetness, making it "not too sweet." Overall, I enjoyed my time at K's Bistro, and would recommend it to others who are looking for a sushi restaurant in the Costa Mesa area! I only deducted one star from my review due to my experience with the waits/service, but I would still love to come back again! read more

Omakase was decent but our biggest issue was the ambience. It was just our party and the owner and staff and the entire time the owner (who sat right next to us even though the entire restaurant was empty) was talking so loudly to the chef and staff. First, the chef is Japanese. If you care! Some of the fish is sourced and flown in fresh from Japan - the Hokkaido Uni - well, it deserves attention! The staff is also Japanese who care about their customers. The ambiance is similar to many Japanese restaurants in Tokyo, does not have to be fancy to taste excellent. The rice was high quality and well prepared. Even the edamame were perfectly salted. We will def be back. Tried to order 3-4 stuffs from today's special but they didn't have them, it was around 6-6:30pm still. It was not his fault but sushi chef kept drinking sake bc counter customer kept asking him to drink, so maybe that's why or not? Dear K's bistro, I'm one of your loyal customers and I come here almost once a week. I ordered Roasted Wagyu Don for lunch at the store. unfortunately, what I had and the food on the poster at the entrance were two completely different things, even without the onsen egg. I found the quality of the wagyu beef served to be far below what I have experienced in the past at your store. The wagyu beef was very woodsy, very thin and extremely dry in texture, making me feel like I was eating beef jerky. All of the wagyu beef I have previously tasted at your store has had excellent flavor and texture, but this experience was very disappointing. When I brought this up to the clerk, they told me it was a different type of Wagyu called US Wagyu. The clerk ended up giving a 50 percent discount on this dish. Hopefully the ingredients themselves can be upgraded to at least do not deviate so much from the poster. read more

Was looking for a sushi spot open late and stumbled upon K's Bistro on Yelp. It's the old Ikko so definitely a familiar place. Got the omakase and it came with about 10 pieces of sushi, an appetizer, seaweed salad, miso soup, a small bowl, anddddd dessert! I honestly thought it was reasonably priced for what you get. The fish quality is really good and I definitely got full. A really solid spot for omakase and they're open until midnight! Definitely will be back again! read more

Reminiscent of Ikko, but with new chefs and in more modern environs and updated tableware. Prices seem fair in line with inflation, and the omakase here remains fluid and a true omakase. The portions were generous for this genre of restaurant. We opted for the omakase with a supplement of hirame, oyster with uni and soft shell tempura. There is a larger kushiyaki menu that we did try out, but prices seemed fair relative to the specialist shops. One of the best priced omakase in this price range for Orange County and the staff from Ikko were fantastic as always. read more

stumbled upon a gem of a restaurant in costa mesa!! it has only been open for 8 months but this place is fantastic! took over ikko sushi's spot after the previous owner retired.  I would highly recommend this place! i am most definitely coming back. expect to spend $60-120/pp without drinks depending on what you order.  Thank you so much for the wonderful experience! food - delicious. the grilled eggplant, chicken gizzard, duck pieces, and onigiri had great flavor. the smoky flavor from the binchotan complemented it nicely. ive had yakitori/yakimono around socal at a number of specialty places, and this is right up there for me, on par with torimatsu in torrance. the matsutake tempura was light, crisp, and great flavor too. they gave matcha salt to complement it which i used on all my dishes for the night.  And then the nigiri... so well done. edomae style with some flair and edible arrangements added on top. had some typical cuts like kanpachi, shima aji, hamachi, uni, hotate, but also some interest special fish of the day like meichidai, ishigakidai, itoyori, kasago... all great! the chef informed us which ones were the best catch of the day as well, and they did not disappoint.  finished off with the yakiimo brulee which was a great dessert!  Also, the dishes were served on beautiful ceramics, added a great touch to the food ambiance - quiet, small counter with a few tables. very intimate, personable, smooth jazz playing in the background. a solid balance of class and comfort overall service - attentive, quick, very polite and professional. the chefs behind the counter would regularly converse with his customers read more

Amazing food, service, and ambiance! This is going to become one of my go to places for great sushi whenever I am in the OC. Let me start with the ambiance of this place. It has that old school sushi spot feel. It isn't the biggest restaurant, but the energy and happiness that fills the restaurant is present the minute you cross the threshold. The first "irasshaimase," from the happy staff signals that you are going into be in for a great meal! I cannot reiterate how amazing the food is here. The fish is fresh, ingredients are of the highest quality, and you can tell the chef knows what he is doing. Some of my favorites were the yellow tail collar, octopus, toro (fatty tuna belly), oysters, and saba (Japanese Mackerel). I'm not particularly into rolls, but the people I was dining with are and they ordered a few (the name's escape me). I have to admit, these rolls have made me re-examine my position. Each roll was flavorful, well thought out, and executed flawlessly. I will definitely have to try more on my next visit! Last, but certainly not least...the service. I love it when I walk into a restaurant and can tell the staff loves being there. Even in the madness of a crazy dinner rush, the tone and care provided by our server was top notch. She took her time to greet us, explain specials, and give sake recommendations. She did all of this while communicating with her fellow server, 2 sushi chefs, and a packed restaurant. The place is a little small, has a good atmosphere and a big sushi bar. Japanese owned and operated. Staff was awesome. Sushi was fresh and about the right amount of perfectly cooked rice. Yakatori was on par with say Kappo Honda, nice they have kitchen options. The Shiro sushi was something I've never experienced (even in Japan) and it was awesome. Beer selection sucks, but they do have Malts on draft (too bitter for the wife). They need the small keg of Asahi on draft since it is made in Japan and really good. Maybe just the big bottles at least (even though they are from Canada). And maybe a cheaper hot sake?? Otherwise for being open only 1 month, it was great. Big shoes to fill for K's having taken the place of Ikko. $$$ sushi prices. Slices of fish are medium size. Price is per piece. At first they didn't take reservations but now they do. They also have a yelp waitlist. If there's a wait you can always go next door to the huddle and have a drink. Chefs are nice and service is good. The two people working the floor are constantly hustling. Specialty nigiri is like $$$$. Selection of fish from Japan. They have some yakitori but I don't think its the strength...pretty undercooked which you don't typically see. Overall its a good option for high, but not super high end sushi. read more

Shhh, this small nondescript oddly named sushi spot should continue to remain a secret. What we are dealing with here is atypical to the usual Japanese-American sushi spots...don't come here for saucy rolls and BOGO deals...come here for fish flown in from Japan, decent yakitori, and don't insult your taste buds and the chefs by using soy sauce as most of the sushi comes pre-dressed and ready to eaten immediately. Highly recommend the omakase, nigiri, and the hand rolls. You get what you pay for here and what you're paying for is quality where modern meets tradition. Saying this place is a hidden gem would be an understatement. I had some of the best sushi and sashimi I have ever had in my life here. This is some of the most authentic Japanese food you will ever find in Orange County, especially open till midnight. The staff and sushi chefs are also extremely polite and courteous. On the outside, the place looks like just some closed shop. As soon as you step in the door, you are transported to a modern clean and pristine sushi counter. I am still at a loss for words that this place has only been open four months.
