Came in here, because our trusty Yelp led us here as my husband searched for Soba noodles for dinner. This is such an unassuming place considering the looks from the outside! The place is older and a bit outdated, but hey, many hole in the wall places look worse and at least this place is clean and well maintained. The hostess even mentioned having worked at Kabuki for 30 years!!! So, this place has been around for a long time! The serving staff were all ladies and two out of the three were mature local Japanese ladies and another younger local lady. All were so friendly. I mean just passing our table the ladies would greet us. Very Aloha spirit. Food was definitely delicious. My husband was happy with his Soba and the soft shell crab handroll has me craving for more! Today Mom and I decided to come here for Lunch. We usually just get the okazuya, but today we decided to eat in the Restaurant. This both our first time eating in this Restaurant. As we entered and walked pass the okazuya there is a koi pond. I was admiring the kioi in the pond.. Mom ordered Pork tofu and Shrimp tempura and I I ordered Teishoku B with Butterfish. Tried to support local during COVID and give this establishment some business by making a good sized phone order for some Bentos. The guy who answered the phone was pretty rude, rushed, and crass on how he spoke to me, basically telling me that they are very busy and making me feel like I was doing something wrong by calling it in. He hung up without a goodbye and I will look elseware to make our lunch order. I guess since he doesn't seem to need the money, we didn't feel the need to patronize him today and two of my friends are now not going to purchase their large catering orders for upcoming events from here either. This past Sunday, my daughter, grandson and I were trying to decide where to go for an early Family dinner. We were in the Aiea area and decided to try Kabuki. I was in line at 5pm when they opened without a reservation and was fortunate to get a nice table. The restaurant is a real throwback to a 60's family style Japanese restaurant, not fancy, but a bit dated and worn, but totally charming. They have a lovely Koi pond as you enter the restaurant. The staff is all young and attentive. The restaurant quickly filled, which is a indication of it's popularity. Lot's of families and friends dining. The menu is extensive and the food, very good. There are many Japanese restaurants with exceptional food. The food here may not be gourmet quality, but it is very delicious, portions are generous and service 5 stars. Upon being seated, they bring ice water and a pot of tea. You get a container of rice for the table to share. No need to ask for an extra bowl of rice. I like that . There is so much to choose from. They have a Sushi menu, which we ordered from, as well as many complete dinners. They have beer, wine and sake. We totally enjoyed everything we had. ***CASH ONLY*** One of my go to spots for okazuya... also one of the few places on the west side. They are open early so it's nice to be able to stop here before work, beach, or even for a flight off island. The okazuya recently moved inside and it's gotten a very nice facelift. While waiting outside they have list with pencils that you can start to plan out your order. You still read it off to the cashier though. I got here around 6am on a Saturday morning and had either just missed or just got there before the rush because I was luckily second in line, but when I left there was a line about 8 people deep. Service has always been friendly with the 2 aunties working at the counter. Food was to my liking! Fried chicken was nice and crunchy, the potato tempura was warm and still had s nice crunch to it, with nice warm sweet potato(yellow not purple) inside. The hamburger patty was thick and juicy, still a little pink on the inside so it wasn't dry. Hash patty also was a very nice thick size. I got 2 bento A which honestly has all the goodies inside, potato tempura, fried chicken, egg, hotdog, and Teri meat all on a bead of rice. Topped it off with 2 full roles of the maki sushi. I used to come here as a child with my family to eat in the restaurant. I remember the koi fish inside. Now I mostly come in the mornings for okazuya! Good selection, my favorite is the tempura sweet potato, and I like nishime and gobo and the chow fun. But it's all good. And makes for good bento beach food. Cash only! read more

When grandma san would bring in the food to refill the windows you know that you were getting authentic, old school grinds using ingredients that were prepared, fermented, pickled, or marinated in her backyard. Prepared with patience and love, I'm guessing grandma san would cut the veggies and meats so that every bite would be memorable. When the chow fun wasn't as greasy or flavorful anymore, Sagaras closed - for whatever reason. But, they knew that the food was never the same and some recipes just couldn't be replicated. Loved Kabuki pre-pandemic. However, like Sagaras, know that you'll always be in my heart and not in my stomach. Five stars for the take out window, review. Highly recommend. If you enjoy old fashioned okazuya, then this is the place to come to. By noon on a Saturday, forget getting much because most food items are sold out. Was able to get a few items, such as cone sushi, Teri beef, pork adobo, egg, and chow fun. Not much, but enough to enjoy. The Teri beef was a bit tough, but okay. The pork adobo was ono. The cone sushi was always good and tasty. The egg was pretty good. Finally, the chow fun was not too bad. Overall, it wasn't the foods I normally would get, but couldn't be picky. Had to satisfy the hunger. My recommendation is to go early to get the good stuff. Not sure what they have now, since most was all gone. I recall they have chorizo, hot dogs, fried chicken, maki sushi, and other winner food items. The food here is very fresh and made to order. We got the Kabuki Teishoku that came with sashimi, chuwamushi, rice, miso soup, salad, tempura, and misoyaki butterfish. All of it was excellent. Our food came out within 10 minutes of ordering. The chuwamushi was absolutely silky and divine and was completely heartwarming. It was a warm hug in a bowl. The sashimi was some of the freshest sashimi that I had and the freshly cut daikon was yummy too. The miso soup is always a great go to and the rice was the best from Japan and pillowy soft and yummy. The tempura was fresh and crispy and not oily. The misoyaki butterfish became the supporting actor because all of the other items made such as great impression on my palate. We were so full that we could not have dessert and I had leftovers. I cannot wait for the next adventure. There is great parking and no cost to that parking. Charging stations are available as well. Lots of ATM machines if you need it. I don't think they deserve a star. Too bad I couldn't post this without one. I had the most disappointing experience at Kabuki Restaurant. There were multiple instances of poor customer service, from the rude host to the unfriendly waitress. It's important for a host to be welcoming and accommodating, and for a waitress to treat customers with kindness and respect. It's also unfortunate that the waitress automatically added a tip without any prior indication. Transparency is crucial in such situations. I hope the management & owners understand the the frustration and how dissatisfied with the overall service was. Customer service plays a significant role in the restaurant industry, and it's essential for staff to prioritize treating customers well. Our family will not return to Kabuki Restaurant due to this negative experience we had. I believe between the of 8 the bill was close to $184.00 and to be treated with disrepect and unfriendliness is horrible Not sure if I'll support the deli area. Love their okazuya here. I went here this past Saturday and there was a bit of a wait but it wasn't too bad. I probably waited around 30 mins or so to get in line to order. You can also call to pre-order in advance so you can just come to pick up good order. Once you get to the inside area they only allow up to 4 people in that area. They have a paper outside you can grab along with a pencil to mark down what okazuya pieces you want and then you can read it to the cashier. They only accept cash here so make sure you bring cash! Small booths not comfortable for average persons especially for Japanese style of food. After my wife finished eating she found a roach floating in the soup. NO extra charge! Went here on March 7,2023 to the Okazuya. Had a big lady working there, not serving, but working in the back and crossing through the area where the food was being served. She was hacking and coughing. Not even covering her mouth and mind you, no mask on. She had a horrible cough and shouldn't hVe even been there if she was that sick. I've only been to the okazuya side 2x. I waited in like 20 minutes the 1st time and 45 minutes the 2nd time. When I got inside, there were 3 older woman, but only 1 was assisting the customers who were waiting. Pre-made food shouldn't take that long to make. What's the point of having a slip that customers can fill out? I don't think it would help one bit if you move slow to service your customers. I had the Kabuki Teishoku. I am not Japanese, but I must say this "combo" of tempura fried shrimp and butter fish were very yummy. The miso soup was standard. The overall atmosphere and inside of the restaurant is old and has uninterrupted/authentic feel to it. Several tables were conjoined to accommodate my work party. We were celebrating Office Workers. The experience was very wholesome. Our food had been pre-ordered for a designated time so it was out very shortly after we arrived we had little placards with everyone's name on it and their order. This made things flow rather smoothly. I always suggest knowing what you want prior to arriving to a place of dining. You can work on the pronunciation and those who work in the restaurant still may not understand. So, using the menu as a reference will work too if you don't have a handy dandy placard. This place isn't the most well presented or high brow Japanese restaurant, (i.e. their menu could use pictures) but it got the job done. Overall, I am giving this place a 4/5 because I don't have any deep gripes about it and I don't know Japanese food well enough to critique in detail. Placed order for bento. My event was cancelled but had already ordered so picked it up. Super disappointed with bento. Size and portions are generous however the quality of dishes was not good. Flavor on teriyaki was very sweet. Shrimp tempura batter was heavy and also sweet. Egg and spam was just ok. Gobo was tough and flavor again was sweet. Picked up at 9 am and ate at lunch. Sorry but can't recommend your bento. May consider doing deli next time. read more

Haven't been here in a while (a few months) because the lines were long and parking was scarce. Today it wasn't too bad so I decided to pick up my usual (pint of chow funn, 4 x gobo, cone sushi and 2 shoyu butterfish). Should have kept going. They must have a different cook because everything was "off". The chow funn and butterfish was too salty for me (could only taste salt), the cone sushi had a "funny taste" to it (threw it away) and the gobo tasted "off" too. I spent/wasted $30+ on the food. Don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. read more

so so different right now because of covid lockdowns ONLY open for okazuya takeout none of the regular teishoku dishes they have paper menu/order sheets and small golf pencils outside so that while you're waiting in line you can figure out what you want to make the ordering go faster once you get inside. once inside, they built a new counter with 2 okazu stations so they can help 2 customers at a time. there were also spam musubis and some premade bentos when i went. i didnt see any noodle options though, but it could be because i went later in the afternoon, and they may have sold out. if you go early in the morning be prepared to wait in line, because its usually pretty long lots of parking in this shopping center so thats always a plus just wish they had some of the teishoku stuff read more

We go here every once in a while purely for nostalgia reasons. My in-laws are Japanese and they have have been going to this place for over 30 years! I honestly don't think they've changed anything in the restaurant in that time. So when you go in it literally feels like you're going back in time. That is not necessarily a bad thing, for me it just brings back a lot of great family memories. We usually go to the Okazuya which is why I'mI am giving this a four star. Go early for the best choices. It's a walk up window at the restaurant. Last night we decided to get the dinner menu option where you cook at your table. The grill is exactly the same grill they used 30 years ago. Lol. I am not sure if I would advise doing this if you're with the group. The two of us ended up cooking way longer after everyone was done eating. If it's just two people that might be OK. Again... If it's your first time here at try Okazuya first!! Yesterday we had some concerns about our order and receipt. A couple of mistakes were made by the trainee cashier. My review was quickly responded by the owner with an apology and offer for a refund or credit. That was really quick and was appreciated. That is awesome that the owner is on top of things and reads the YELP comments. The food is always excellent as well as the service. I understand the reason for having a trainee since the restaurant is always busy. My son works for the Star Advertiser and agrees with me about the food and service. I do miss the sit in part of the restaurant that they closed that also had awesome food that to me was second to none. read more

This is a very local Japanese restaurant that has been there like forever! There's a good reason it's still there, the food is tasty! In the early hours they have an Okazuya with many different selections even pork adobo! If you gonna picnic, go beach, or sit on top a mountain under a tree it's nice to have yummy snacks! Kabuki Restaurant is one of our favorite Japanese okazuya eateries in Pearl City. We don't mind standing patiently in line for a plateful of crispy shrimp and sweet potato tempura, chow mein or chow fun, gobo, BBQ meat, musubi with ume, shoyu. chicken, nishime, long rice, and fried chicken. They also feature daily specials like Konbu maki and marinated fried chicken which often runs out early! This was a good place, I'm stuck between 3 or 4 stars, so I'm gonna round up, since the food was delicious. When you come in, you can't help but feel a cultural connection. I've never been to Japan, but Kabuki definitely met my ideation of what it would be like. We were immediately seated and in my. Ook, it's always a plus to not have to wait long periods of time for food and service. The seating was comfy and cozy, amidst more Japanese architecture, making it more of an experience than just a casual lunch. There was one waitress, who seemed to be tending all seating and she was on top of it. There were moments she subbed as a busboy too, I was thoroughly impressed. She was small in stature, but hard working and provided really good service. She took her time for us novice Asian orderers and explained the menu in detail. She was even able to figure out what we wanted by our sparing description, kinda like she jumped right in our thoughts and knew what we wanted. The food arrived in a timely fashion, with the one man show waitress, I'm still not convinced that she was a cook too. Everything came out just as described and great to taste. I loved the tempura, in fact, I wanted the potato tempura, but they only served that outside in the Okazuya, next time for sure.
