I had passed by this place so many times and finally got the chance to eat there. We were seated promptly on a Monday night by an efficient and friendly mother/daughter team. The tea was lemony and flavorful. The kids liked the Bolanee, pastry turnovers stuffed with potatoes. My wife and I enjoyed the Kashk Badenjan, mashed eggplant with spices, although it got a little too spicy for my wife after a while. The kabobs were quite delicious with good seasoning on each: lamb, chicken, and beef. The beef was my favorite for flavor and tenderness. All are served on a bed of fluffy basmati rice dusted with saffron. It looks and tastes great. My only disappointment was the pita which I found somewhat chewy. Overall, the experience was good with our friendly waitress answering all questions about food and any possible spiciness issues, which was a concern with the kids. The food is very good here and unique. The spices and flavors is very unique and I enjoyed it. I had a steak kabob and rice. they have brown and white rice, but you can get a mix. The red spicy sauce they serve with the bread before the meal is amazing. We also had the appetizer sampler. The appetizer prices are extremely reasonable at 5$ per app accept for the sampler. I was at some restaurant where they had an 18 dollar shrimp app, the nerve. You get to pick which apps you want in your sampler, we had the hummus, was silicious, and two different dumplings both delicious. The dumplings are not fried like most, and are covered in a delicious sauce. The only part of the meal that was just ok was the baklava dessert. Came here driving back from the island to NYC w/2 other people. Owner was nice, and so was all of the waitstaff. Since this was our first time eating Afghan food, they were happy to explain some details about the dishes we ordered to us. Food was phenomenal! For appetizers, the Eggplant with Yogurt Sauce and Pumpkin with Yogurt Sauce appetizers were great. For my entree, I had the Sultani Kabab and it (and the white sauce that came with) was to die for! Also tasted the Lamb Chops and Vegetarian Dish, all very good. Would surely come back again if in the area; they currently have a Yelp deal for 1 free appetizer if you check in. Definitely worth a try! The Chicken Breast Kebob is delicious...the chicken is tender and juicy! You can get their house special rice (can't remember what it's called) which is some sort of brown rice with raisins and shredded carrots on top (costs a little extra). But their white basmati rice works great for me. Entrees come with a house salad with their house dressing already mixed in...it's some sort of mild yogurt base (maybe?). I don't like mayonnaise, and it doesn't remind me of that at all....almost more like a Greek Tzatziki sauce. I think you get the same dressing/sauce with the entree, along with this somewhat spicy green sauce. Dinner starts with some kind of bread...it's a flat bread and it's not my favorite. It's bland and almost feels stale due to the amount of chewing you have to do, not that I think it's stale. Even when it's warm, it has a strange texture. It definitely needs the butter that comes with the basket or some kind of dipping sauce. Service is pleasant and welcoming. There's a small lot on the side of the building and some parking spots on the street in front of the restaurant. The only negative is that I wish there was more chicken! It's maybe 6 pieces of chicken that were skewered when cooked (skewer is removed before entrees are brought out) and a ton of rice! read more

I had this bookmarked on my yelp page since this was literally around the block from my house. I saw all the amazing reviews so I thought why not give it a try. I walked in after getting off a disastrous LIRR ride from Penn. The restaurant was empty and my first reaction was if they were opened? They showed me the menu which were mostly Kabob. I ordered the chicken breast kabob and beef steamed dumplings ( I can't remember the actual names but the appetizer was free with check-in and review). They were cool to give me the appetizer before my review and I promised to give them a review after my dinner. The food review is based on my palate and experience with Middle Eastern food from dining a various restaurants in Jackson Heights. The chicken was dry and overcooked and not the best I had. The brown rice was good and tasty. The steamed beef dumpling came in 3 and was average. A little mushy with a lot of sauce. Next time I'll dine-in to see if things are different. read more

First time customer, my GF ordered a pick up. We ordered 2 lunch specials and a spinach sambosa. The spinach sambosa was $4.00. I received 3 x tiny dumplings. I couldnt believe my eyes. 3 little bites for $4.00. The lunch specials were also skimpy. They are cheap not only with the meat but even with the rice!!! At least give more rice you cheapskates!!! HAHA... Skimpy portions with little flavor. One thing they gave us a lot of was condiments. There were quite a few white sauces and hot sauces... Some would say I have a very mature pallet for Persian food and kebabs, I've been eating this type of food all of my life. I've had kebabs all over the world from Japan to Iran and this little kebab house is up there with some of the best. I've been a regular customer here for years and for some reason I haven't reviewed them yet, it's well overdue. The owners are some of the sweetest and kindest restauranteur around. They are warm and welcoming, and the they set the bar for Afghan hospitality and cuisine. The food is truly authentic! I've had almost everything on the menu but I'll list some of my favorites. For the apps the sambosa, bolanee, and the Mantu are simply amazing. The spices and preparation make you want to order seconds. For the entrees, everything is delicious, but my favs are the jujeh kebab and lamb chops are some of the best around. Always juicy and always cooked just right. The brown rice that accompanies the dish is amazing, and the white sauce is the best I've ever had. Finish the meal with some Afghan chai and baklava and you'll leave here truly satisfied.
