Service was really nice and the music is low, which is great because I can actually talk to people. I was desperate for Korean food so I came here - normally I wait until I'm in Flushing or Fort Lee. Honestly, it's a 3 and I could give it another star because it's in Astoria. I will say I would order the bibimbap again, lots of veggies although the spicy pork was cold. The soybean soup was salty and devoid of the deep flavor, but the tofu stew was passable. Cash will allow you to bypass tax.

Go for the lunch special! It's so nice to have bubbling hot soup this time of year. I actually took home leftovers of my bulgogi and japchae rice bowl since I got full quickly.

coming here filled me with regret as ive been frequenting this area for the past 3 years and been missing out on this place that whole time. its easy to miss walking down the street and when i stopped by it was empty so expectations were low, but every part of my experience here was comforting and made me feel appreciated. the service was amazing and I was offered refills on banchan twice which i took up. i got the army stew and they give you the ramen on the side so it wont overcook if thats not your preference. dont expect a fancy meal here but everything tasted like a comforting home cooked meal.

Small and quaint place, staff is so attentive. They moved us so we wouldn't feel the draft from the door and food is very affordable. It is definitely worth a try

Ate here today for lunch and dinner by myself on a frigid and icy Tuesday afternoon after work as a substitute paraprofessional at P.S. 234 Q. I had brought both the kimchi seafood pancake and grilled short ribs dish that it had tasted really good and delicious. The service there was also attentive and pleasant. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time.

(4.5/5) Second time back at KAL and I am not disappointed!! The interior was as cozy as last time I came and the banchan was just as delicious too (perfect amounts of salty, sour, and spicy). This time I got the Samgyetang which is a chicken broth served with a whole small bird stuffed with jujube dates, ginseng, rice, and other hearty ingredients served in a hot stone bowl. My only qualm was that the chicken tasted a little bit dry. It was the perfect meal for a winter day and I also had leftovers to take home. The service was great too -- they let me go out to an ATM to get cash and then return! Highly recommend KAL if you're in Astoria.

Hmm 3.5? Well, 5/5 for the staff that was working that day but 3/5 for the food. My friend and I came here on a Thursday night for dinner. We were greeted by a very friendly staff and seated right away. I ordered a bulgogi omu rice and my friend ordered army stew. We were both underwhelmed by the food, which we were very surprised about because of all the raving reviews, also we traveled all the way from Brooklyn just for this. We both thought that the dishes we had were not flavorful, very bland. But because of all the good reviews, I am wondering if it's just an off day (different cook?), who knows. The staff member that was working that night though, he's super friendly and attentive, and we love his big smile. He paid attention to every customer, although it's a small place, it's actually not easy to do. He always appeared when we needed something and we did not have to wait around or look for him. Once customers leave he immediately sprays and wipes down the tables.

If you are in need of Korean food in Astoria, this place is a must go to place. I went for seafood tofu soup. And it was awesome. It comes from the kitchen bubbling hot. That level of spicy was right for me. I love this tofu soup with seafood!! Every time I go to Astoria, I will make sure to make this my pit stop!! I highly recommend this restaurant!!! read more

I had the braised mackerel and it was delicious, a little warning though, it does have a strong fish scent and taste so for those that aren't big fans of fishes, order something else. My boyfriend had the spicy marinated pork, it was flavorful but there was a lot of fatty pieces. It's a small restaurant but nicely decorated, however, it is a small space so I wouldn't recommend it for a big group. I'll definitely be back if I'm having dinner with 1-3 friends. read more

So glad I found this cute place! Finally a place to satisfy my Korean food cravings in Astoria. My friends and I ordered several dishes and honestly they were all so good. Spicy rice cake: I am very picky about my ddokbokki and this was amazing.... rice cake was so chewy~ Dumplings: this dish was so pretty... with pickled radish and mustard seeds on top of homemade dumplings. Braised macherel: spicy macherel stew....the sauce is so good with rice. I love this dish but for people not familiar with this dish... it does have a distinct fishy smell. Buns: both pork buns and japchae buns were so yummy~~~ I left very satisfied! I can't wait to go back and try all the other dishes. read more

Waitress was really nice and welcoming. My NY vaccine pass somehow got deleted and my medical ID has a vivid vaccinated sticker on it. She asked her boss and said it's ok. Rice cake was really good. The set comes with small tiny appetizers and they're also really good read more

Not many people think about going to Astoria for Korean good, but KAL is a hidden gem that more people need to know of! The Bulgogi stew was BOMB! Honestly, the best one I've ever had by far. the serving size was generous and the flavor was sweet and infused with the meat. The mushroom and glass noodles worked very well with the soup base. Also, mixing the soup with the rice is a must for this dish. I would also like to add that not ordering the veggie dumpling would be a big mistake. It was honestly a unique complex experience that isn't found in your typical dumpling/mandoo. All their dishes were indeed traditional Korean, but the plating made it so special. Their fried chicken dish had two different sauces on it, one a green wasabi mustard and their red sauce had a gochujang flavor to it. Everyone should check out these traditional korean dishes with modern high dining style plating! read more

The best real korean food in Astoria! No frills, reasonably priced, and I always leave satisfied (Ive been back multiple times). A slightly smaller place with street seating too, it gives sweet, simple cozy vibes, but beware, it can be easy to walk right past. Expect a wait at peak dinner time weekends. Very kind staff. Great place for a date, a small group of friends, and ive called ahead for a large party which was readily accommodated. Support this beautiful business! read more

One cold rainy day that called for hot soup or stew I decided to finally stop in and try Kal. The army soup was delicious, filling and generous. I thought it was so cute and also yummy to have all the little small dishes or banchan with my meal. I ordered a hot tea as well and suffice it to say that when I walked back out tummy full with yummy deliciousness, it no longer felt cold and wet outside. It was my first time trying budae jjigae and my first time trying kal and I'm definitely going back to try everything else on the menu. What should I go for next? WOW. This was some of the best KBBQ I've ever had. We ordered the kimchi fried rice with spicy pork and the braised mackerel which came with banchan. Everything tasted incredible, especially the mackerel. The space is small and intimate and wait staff was super friendly. read more

So I gave the restaurant 3 stars because 1 the restaurant is super tiny and I went in for lunch I was the only customer their. The food was okay I do not eat Korean food but I decided to try something new. The rice cake was very sweet and spicy. I like spice that was not the problem. I explained to the waiter it was my first time here and he really did not explain the rice cake well. It had fish cake inside of it I'm not to found of the fish but overall it was okay! read more

So far, I've tried the seafood jigae and beef bibimbap and they were both solid! It's reasonably priced and a nice restaurant to have in the neighborhood. Be sure to look for the store carefully as it's very small and I passed it the first time I went to get the takeout. I'm curious about other food on the menu and would like to try the spicy pork next time. read more

Possibly the best Korean I've had yet in NYC. My first time coming here was about a year ago. I don't live nearby and haven't found myself in Astoria much after that so have been itching to come back ever since. Thankfully last night was my lucky night. The eats: first time I went I had bulgogi, kimchi fried rice w/ spicy pork, spicy and soy garlic wings. I was completely blown away. Everything couldn't have been more flavourful and fresh. Last night I got bulgogi, soy garlic wings and my friend got the tonkatsu. I'll be honest, the bulgogi wasn't as tantalizing as I remember it being, but not far off by much. Still flavourful, fresh and very satisfying. Some of the best leftovers you'll ever have if you don't scarf it all down at once ;P The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy, the gravy was rich in flavour and contained peanuts which added a wonderful characteristic reminiscent of a peanut curry. The food took maybe 20-25+ minutes to come, however I'm of the opinion that no one should expect quality well made food to come out in 5-10 minutes. Patience is a virtue. I'd also say that for a full house the food came out quicker than expected, as well. The interior: it is a fairly small space, if you go on a weekend night it's likely to be full. However when I went during the week early evening time, there was only one other couple seated inside. I can only speak for these two times I went though. They also have outdoor seating that can fit two 2 person groups and one 3-4 person group. They do have a bathroom which I hadn't realized my first time coming here. The service: our waitress, Sophie, is so darling! Super sweet and friendly, we chatted about Korean food and she made the experience better than I thought it could be. Can't wait to go back! read more

This place has had a lot of changes since it first opened. I've liked all of its incarnations but now I really think it has hit its stride. Menu is tight and organized, with pictures. Fantastic home-made kimchee and a nice selection of 5 banchan with every meal. I started with the KFC--Korean Fried Chicken wings, soy and garlic, which had a touch of sweetness and were fantastic. Meal also came with a complimentary scallion pancake which was also delicious. I finished up with a bulgogi bimbimbap. No, it's not the raw meat version but it was still delicious, with a great layer of crispy rice on the bottom. They have also expanded and organized their drink list--mostly different kinds of soju. Would most definitely go back more now that COVID is easing up a bit. read more

Wow, I was in the area and started craving spicy rice cake. I was blown away. I ordered japchae with beef and spicy rice cake. The spicy rice cake has got to be the best one I've ever eaten! It has a beautiful balance between spice and sweetness. The fish cake included also complemented the flavors. Raw cabbage for a little crunch. The japchae was fragrant and full of savory flavors! Other japchae's I've had end up tasting like oil, with minimal actual flavor. KAJ really blew my mind with their flavors. Am very willing to travel 1.5 hrs again to try the rest of the menu. read more

Amazing delivery quality food Honestly they understand good food... period. Want to get fresh delivered and good tasting food; order from here. Fried Dumplings , chicken bibimpob or whatever it's called was solid. Fried rice was just ok wasn't reAlly special. 5 stars because it's not easy to get good quality food delivered. But kal does a good job I will definitely be ordering until I get bored. read more

As a korean living in NYC, it's hard to find authentic Korean food. I came to check it out after seeing KAL mentioned as a top restaurant in Astoria by the Infatuation. I knew this place would be good after I took my first bite of their kimchi. It was a bit busy on a Saturday night, so the service was a tiny bit slow, but the food more than made up for it. My wife had the spicy rice cakes, and I had the galbi and kimchi stew. Nothing was dumbed down and tasted super authentic. read more

Before I comment on food, let me start out by giving a shout-out to the young lady hostess! She was so exceptionally warm and friendly. When my yelp pick up order said my food won't be ready for an hour, i anxiously called the restaurant and she explained that they are super busy and have to prepare food in the order they receive it but also assured me that i won't have to wait a full hour. I really appreciate how calm, friendly, helpful, and gracious she was. My food was ready within 25 minutes, and she even called me to let me know that it was! How sweet! Now for the food. No pics cuz we ate it too quickly! First time eating Korean food but based on how perfectly balanced the sweetness, spiciness, saltiness and umaminess (new word) was, I imagine the food here is authentic and not making overt efforts to please the standard american palette. It goes without saying that the food was absolutely delicious! For reference, we got the bulgogi, tofu stew, spicy rice sticks, and jap chae. The condiments that came with it was really good too. Will absolutely eat from here again. read more

My favorite restaurant in Astoria. Whenever I come here I get delighted with pleasing dishes and kind service from servers in this cosy atmosphere. Today was not exceptional as usual. I celebrate something special with two friends here today. we ordered salmon sashimi, fried beef dumplings, spicy chicken, braised mackerel, spicy pepper japchae and lots of Korean alcoholic beverage. All of the dishes were flavorful. We all gobbled in a flash and kept drinking for quite long. Food was great and a server was really attentive. KAL, you made my day! Thank you, chef ! Only one other person when we walked in for Saturday lunch, when other places nearby are full that makes me think twice. Soooo glad we followed Yelpers - this place was fab! And three other tables filled just after we ordered with more people coming in as we ate - just a timing issue Seaweed appetizer with Korean beer great way to whet the appetite for beef buguloi and chicken terrayki. Flavorful and really satisfying lunch with extra kind service. Will be back! read more

I really love this place. Best Korean food in Astoria hands down. I normally go to the places in flushing and bayside and this place definitely compares. My favorite is the galbi jimm. This is my favorite Korean resturant in NY.!! I have never ever neverever had such delicious Korean food in New York!!! We had 6 main menus and all of them were unbelievable! I've been to this place a total of four times, from the first visit soon after it opened to my last visit recently. The food is not bad and not exceptional like someone else here put it, but portion sizes are small. I have always been satisfied with the main dish, but what looks like scrambled egg that comes out as a side dish is cold, which is a bit strange to me and feels like breakfast leftovers straight from the fridge. Service has improved dramatically from my first visit (new server). Although this is a Korean restaurant, their large chalkboard art looks more japanese. Kinda hope they would display more Korean-looking art. read more

I've never had Algerian-style seafood and was excited to try out Le Petit Pêcheur. We were a party of 6 and made a reservation that same day which was great! We arrived and got seated but weren't explained the process. First, you go up to the fish counter and order the fish you want, the amount you want, and the style you want it cooked (grilled, fried, or sautéed). They've done a great job with the display and I liked seeing the various options in front of me. The worker who helped us was super friendly and took the time to explain what each fish was. I also appreciate that their pricing is transparent (posted on their website). So why 3 stars? Once we finally ordered, we went back to our seats and ordered appetizers, sides, and drinks with our waiter. It took almost 40 minutes to receive the Greek Salad and Virgin Mojito we ordered. We had already received our Fried Calamari before that. Similarly, we got all the fish before the French Fries & Rice Vegetable Medley came out. It was frustrating and took away from the experience the fact that we didn't have the sides to eat with the fish at the time the fish came out. We literally had finished everything when the waiter came out with Lemon Potatoes which we had to send back considering it took too long to get them. It's a shame considering all the food we had was actually delicious. The Fried Calamari was crispy, tender, and not chewy at all, the Grilled Spanish Branzino was buttery, light, and delicious, and the Tiger Shrimp was grilled beautifully and the lemon olive oil mix just enhanced it even more. Even the Marinated Sardines were some of the best I've had. The fish was fresh, grilled/fried properly, and we truly didn't have a bad bite here. Prices are also more than reasonable. There's a clear lack of communication by the staff since two people within our group had provided their credit card to pay and they charged both. It's a shame we couldn't enjoy it as much as I hoped because of the operational issues. Hope they improve with time but until then, I won't be back.

However, once again, Sabry's proves again that they have the best pitas in the business. A full basket comes with fluffy and chewy goodness that none of their competitors can match. I do wish their dips (babaganoush, humus, tahini) were better as I have mentioned, but they are all solid 7's. Onto the seafood. What an excellent version of Grilled Octopus (9/10), with maybe the best crispy char I have tasted in recent memory. I do wish the sauce had a touch of vinegar. Not a big deal. Another near perfect dish was their Grilled Sea Scallops (9/10). They were extra large, super tender, sitting in a pool of delicious tangy sauce (reminiscent of NoLa style BBQ shrimp sauce). The Grilled Shrimps (7/10) were slightly overcooked, while the Taojine Mixed (7/10) was somewhat watery and a bit too dill forward. Lastly, the broth of the Seafood Soup (7/10) was clean and light. The calamri and clams were still tender, but the shrimps were a tad overcooked once again. Clearly after this meal, I have to add Sabry's back into my rotation of pick your own seafood type of restaurants. This was the place where I had my first experience with Egyptian style seafood and it is still one of the best after all these years.

I'm leaving this review since I loved their service and quality of the food. Then why am I giving Kal three stars? I want Kal to improve the quality of their food so that I can try again.. I've tried Kal 5-6 times since 2019. I loved their food a lot and the food was always fresh. I've tried their mackerel stew and bibimbap all the time. However, I've noticed that they changed the portion of their side dishes and the quality of the fish. And after I tried tofu soup today I really don't know if I want to try Kal anymore. The tofu in the soup was a little greish not white. I asked the server why the tofu is greish and he answered (after he asked a cook) that they cooked the tofu soup from morning time so the tofu got darker. Well, since I'm Korean, I know how to cook Tofu soup and I know tofu is always added at the end of the process. The tofu is heated through then the tofu soup is served. So it cannot be true that they cook Tofu soup from morning time. It would have been better if they asked me if I want to try something else and not making up the story.. I'm very dissapointed about this. I want the owner or manager to see this review and want them to improve the quality of the food as they used to be. I loved Kal and recommended this place to my Korean friends all the time but now I'm very dissapointed about their service and food. I will try one more time again and will update the review after then. Hope they fix this problem. read more
