I love the lack televisions, I love that I'm here to meditate on the complex balance of flavors the sushi chef has taken the time to assemble like a conductor of a symphony. Complicated. Last time I was there for dinner,albeit a long time ago, this place was hopping. This was the first time I have been there for lunch. It was quite empty. Not sure if that is the difference between lunch and dinner. I noticed there was a new menu so I asked about ownership. As I suspected, ownership has changed. They did do some deferred maintenance. Kappo sui is a small Japanese restaurant tucked away in an unassuming strip mall, but it's packed with delicious food and amazing service. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant (you feel like your parents are cooking for you!) Everything I had was incredibly fish, from the sushi to the eel box, and you can tell that they use good ingredients. Don't skip the dessert, their cheesecake and panna cotta was insane! Wasn't very busy on a Monday, we were seated right away. We ordered mixed pickled vegetables, it was missing daikon (as pictured on the menu); mixed tempura, served half a lotus root (picture shows full lotus root slice); Agedashi tofu, tasty as expected; grilled black cod, slim slice (a third of what is pictured). We placed an additional order of unagi nigiri and Ika sashimi. We wait quite awhile and had to ask for our order. The sashimi was fresh but the dish was missing ginger and soy sauce. This was my first visit and I thoroughly enjoyed every dish! I finally tried the Duck Soba after seeing it on tiktok and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The duck was incredibly juicy. The chef was also kind enough to accommodate a special request for salmon carpaccio even though it wasn't on the menu. The salmon was buttery and it melted in my mouth. We visited on November 10th and everything was delicious! We ordered the grilled pacific saury, dobin-mushi(a traditional Japanese seafood broth steamed and served in a teapot), cream croquettes, mentaiko omelet, and ebi-shinjō. The service here is incredible -- everyone was so kind, polite, and attentive from start to finish. You can really feel how much they care about their guests. We tried a little bit of everything: squid tempura, egg custard, crab dumplings, marinated mackerel, cold inaniwa udon, amberjack sushi, o-toro sushi, and a salmon hand roll. Everything was delicious, but the crab dumplings and squid tempura were next-level -- so good we actually ordered them twice! Even though we were totally full, we couldn't resist trying all the desserts. Every single one was amazing -- and it turns out the owner makes them himself! Such a special touch. Service was incredibly slow. 2. The pitcher of beer was flat. 3. Sake glass had weird smell to it. 4. Chicken wings were under seasoned and undercooked. 5. I love this place! This is the spot to go if you love authentic Japanese cuisine. They have an amazing lunch set that comes with your choice of protein, rice, miso soup, and veggie sides for a very reasonable price. They also have a delicious dinner selection. My go to is always their karage and the yellowtail collar! The inside is super cozy and the staff is very welcoming. Parking is super accessible and there are always plenty of spots in the lot. My gosh it has been a while that I've had authentic sushi. All the nigiri had the perfect amount of wasabi and the fish quality was amazing. Service was amazing, the whole staff had a smile on their face the entire time and accommodated anything we wanted/needed. The ambiance truly made me feel like I was back at home in Japan. Calming ambiance, jazz music, great for conversations. Let alone the dessert was the best! I've never had better cheesecake than theirs, it was so rich but so light at the same time. The matcha panna cotta was something I've never had and I will definitely be going back for more. The yuzu sorbet was also amazing, usually everywhere else that I have had yuzu sorbet it's usually bitter and this was the best one yet. This place is my new go-to spot for sushi forsure. read more

My friend took me here for my birthday to try their new omakase special and I had a great experience. Omakase (5/5): for $105, I would say it's worth the value. It came with appetizers, soup, nigiri, and dessert. Fish was good quality and I usually don't care for non-nigiri courses but I really liked everything that came out. Overall great spot for omakase. Employees were so friendly too. Ambiance is more on the casual side so no need to dress up. Service for the course took about 3 hours, so I would keep that in mind. The best sushi in OC! Came to this gem in Costa Mesa because my friend raved about it. It definitely lived up to my expectations! We started with a sake flight, which came highly recommended. Typically I just buy a bottle, but they explained the sake and taught us about it too!! :) I enjoy sushi (versus rolls) and it blew my mind. The fish was so fresh, it melted like butter and was super fresh!? This is one of the top 2 sushi experiences I've had. The best quality! And what made it better was the customer service from everyone! Zuke was the sweetest, most accommodating person (and is also the owner), plus his staff were so quick, efficient and amiable. I'm already planning to bring my friends here to experience the best sushi in OC! And let me also mention the dessert! Zuke told us he makes all of it himself and it was amazing! Wow! I feel like I forget to review restaurants I frequent. KAPPO SUI IS DEFINITELY ONE OF MY FAVORITE Japanese restaurants in OC. I come to get the mackerel, which have been one of my favorite foods since childhood. So my order is usually Sapporo and mackerel. lol the ojisan 飯 (my mother told me the other day I have ojisan taste in food). I usually sit at the bar where it is very clean and I can chat away with people. The staff is so NICE. I feel so welcomed every time I go, the new owner Satoshi-San is a hard worker and really cares about the food and customers, the former owner and his wife (Shirai San and Okāsan) are quick to greet with a smile. Stopped in on a cold rainy day craving Japanese soup, and was drawn to trying this place after seeing photos of the food and reading some of the reviews. I had the Inaniwa Udon, the Ginger Eggplant, the Negi Toro Roll, the Basque Cheesecake, the Matcha Panna Cotta and some warm sake. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and I took the rest of the udon to go. The service was excellent. I enjoyed sitting at the bar, and all of the staff were very kind, polite and accommodating. They even let me charge my phone when it died so I could take an uber after. All the guests seemed to enjoy themselves and very appreciative, the atmosphere was great and relaxed. All tasted very delicious, and I am not sure I could pick a favorite. I would say the cheesecake and the Udon tasted better than in most restaurants, and I had not tried eggplant ginger before which was recommended and I loved. As part of my mission to try every sushi spot in Orange County, this gem has officially taken the top spot. From the moment you walk in, you get a real Japanese feel -- an elderly Japanese couple quietly preparing everything behind the bar. It feels authentic in the best way. I ordered a variety of nigiri: halibut, saba, red eye snapper, black cod, and red snapper -- all fresh and well-balanced. I also tried two rolls (salmon and crunchy roll) which were good, but next time I'd skip the rolls and stick with nigiri and cooked dishes. The highlight of the meal was the simmered kinki fish. Cooked to perfection -- the meat was flaky, tender, and full of flavor. To finish, I tried both desserts: the Basque cheesecake and blueberry panna cotta. The basque cheesecake wasn't your typical dense, silky, rich version -- it was smooth, fluffy, and light, almost airy, and still incredibly satisfying. Both desserts were absolutely incredible. Not sweet, which I love, and dangerously good. If you're looking for true Japanese sushi in OC -- quiet, thoughtful, and delicious -- this spot is a must. read more

Amazing sushi and service. It's more of a traditional Japanese sushi place which I love. Sushi is made with the freshest fish. Best Ankimo around. They make it twice a week. I seriously crave it everyday. Dangerous, as it's a 4 min drive from home. Zuke, the owner and dessert chef, is so kind and brought out the dessert sampler at the end which was out of this world.
