Came for the discount, left having spent a lot more. Kase Sake & Sushi is a sushi spot in a very random-looking plaza with such notable restaurant neighbors as Cafe 86 and... Wingstop? They've been open a little over 3 years, although I overheard the head chef saying that he's been here for 16 months now. He's reworked the menu and put some of his own touches, but there's still a sense that it's a casual but high-quality spot. They've had a special this summer discounting their most basic level Hanban omakase from $35 to $29, so my friend and I both started off with that. I chose the seaweed salad for my appetizer course and loved the freshness and seeing some variety of seaweed in the mix. The rolled up cucumber slice was actually a very nice touch to help mellow out the intense seaweed bites. The second course was a 3-piece salmon sashimi. It had a simple dressing which I believe incorporated yuzu, and it tasted very fresh and higher quality than entry-level salmon sashimi dishes at other spots. Third course was the 5-piece nigiri. Tuna, amberjack, yellowtail, sea bass, and sea bream all tasted pretty impressive and all were a step above lower-end local sushi spots. The akami tuna especially carried a lot of flavor compared to its inferior counterparts, and yellowtail and sea bass were also memorable. The last course there was a chef's choice hand roll. They seemed to choose salmon along with some sort of truffle aioli. The truffle was subtle and unintrusive but still enhanced the flavor, and the salmon was great. I did have a tiny bit of trouble biting through the nori, resulting in some of the contents falling out the end, but fortunately everything made it back to my plate. Of course I wasn't satiated for dinner, so I convinced my friend to share a bunch of additional nigiri with me. The Kanpachi ($10) was as great as any I've had in the past, while the Kanpachi Belly ($12) was actually slightly less impressive and somehow more "crunchy" overall. The Chutoro ($15) was the overall star with a great balance of richness and flavor, while the Otoro ($16) seemed to get doused with too much lemon juice. I also shared my friend's choice of a Negitoro cut roll ($18), which ended up being the best I've had. I don't really feel like I get fattiness in this usually, but they had it in spades. The green onion did balance all this richness out as well, thankfully, and the crispy rice bits added a fun textural element. Last, but certainly not least, we split a Homemade Matcha Cake ($12) for dessert. Excellent stuff on par with any matcha cake I've had. Lots of richness from both the matcha cake and matcha cream layers, and that sweet azuki harmonized perfectly. The blackberry and strawberry garnishes were fresh and sweet, and both worked very well with the cake. Service was mostly good from both sushi chefs and servers, aside from not having forks immediately presented with dessert. The decor feels comfortable and the music was decent background that didn't ever really stand out except for one cover which I identified since I recognized elements of the original song. It was shockingly not too busy on a Saturday evening for walk-ins. Kase is a refined but approachable spot for mid-high end sushi, and it should be on any local sushi lover's list. You can go all-out for a special occasion or just have a nice, reasonable weekly sort of meal, so check them out any time. read more

I've been coming to KASE since they first opened, and for a long time this was genuinely my favorite sushi restaurant. I've brought numerous friends here over the years and recommended it because I was always so impressed with the quality. Unfortunately, after several recent experiences, I'm incredibly disappointed by how much things have changed. I went in again just a few days ago, and the salmon sashimi was incredibly fishy. What makes this even more disappointing is that I had the exact same experience with the salmon on my previous visit. I decided to give it another chance, hoping it was just an off night, only to encounter the same issue again. The portions have also changed significantly. The pieces of fish on the nigiri are noticeably smaller compared with what they used to serve. The toro sashimi with caviar and gold flakes was especially disappointing. The last time I ordered it, the pieces were literally about half the size of what I had received previously--and I'm not exaggerating. I also order the Natalie Roll almost every time I come here. On my most recent visit, it was prepared differently and even the presentation was noticeably different. I sent it back, only to be told that this was how they had "always" made it. As someone who has ordered this roll repeatedly over the years, I know that simply isn't consistent with what I've been served before. I've also ordered their omakase numerous times, including their most expensive option. Unfortunately, based on my experiences, I don't feel any of the options are worth the price, particularly given the inconsistency in quality and portions. And that really seems to be the biggest problem now: inconsistency. The food changes from visit to visit, the servers seem to constantly change, the portions have gotten smaller, and the overall experience and quality simply aren't what they once were. It's particularly disappointing because I was such a loyal customer and introduced so many friends to this restaurant. I genuinely loved KASE and continued giving it additional chances because of how good it used to be. I've been to Kase Sake & Sushi - the first being last June and the second time earlier this month. On our first visit, we arrived for an early dinner on a Friday evening. We were the only diners for the majority of the time we were there, with maybe one party that arrived while we were mid-meal. We enjoyed the Oomori, which was a 7 course tasting at $56. It came with a seasonal appetizer, 4 piece seasonal fish nigiri, sashimi special, blue crab hand roll, 4 piece nigiri flight, negi toro hand roll, and 2 piece chef nigiri special. I really appreciated the pace as each course came out one at a time and we really enjoyed it all. I like how it also went from nigiri to hand roll and then back again. We also added an order of amaebi nigiri $14 at the end. It was great experience at a great price and knew we would return. Recently, they had a special going on for their three year anniversary - $39 for their Shinsen Omakase, which normally goes for $55. They had this special for the whole month of May and now June! On this Saturday evening, the early dinner seating was quite packed and reservations were necessary. The Shinsen included edamame, seaweed salad or miso soup, along with 3 piece sashimi special, 10 piece seasonal nigiri, and chef's choice fresh hand roll. We appreciated the generous bowl of miso soup and the mix of seaweed in the salad. The salmon sashimi was just sashimi versus the first time it was presented with a sauce. We appreciated the waitress telling us what each piece of nigiri was when she brought it to our table. However, the other waitress who brought the hand rolls over didn't say a thing when she brought them over. Kase may not offer the largest cuts of fish, but the rice is done well and the fish is fresh and each bite is such a great bite. Everything just tastes great. You may leave a little hungry though, so keep that in mind. Our first experience was an easy 5 and this one was a 4. Perhaps because it was a lot busier on our second visit, so those platters of sushi were done quickly. While our first experience was at an enjoyable pace and each plate seemed a little more thoughtful. We also got the extra hand roll on our last visit. They fill a nice middle-ground option when you want something more than your typical AYCE sushi quality while being a lot more affordable than the high-end omakase options in town. The rice ratio was too high and unfortunately the rice was too mushy. The flavors were also very good such as the different garnishes went well w the fish. Wagyu roll 7/10: good flavor and cripsy texture but the meat that was given was very small it was hard to feel and taste the Wagyu. Baked crab roll 6.5/10: this dish had rly good potential however I felt like it was missing something it was pretty heavy and I think it may be a preference but it felt weird eating warm cucumber in a roll. We went here for a birthday dinner, the wife got one of the omakase courses, she said they were all very good except for just one that she didn't care for but I dont remember which and I believe it was a personal preference not due to the food itself. So if you are a sushi lover im sure this place is good for you. It was a slower night when we had come by and we were seated right away, the restaurant is very clean and well kept, no issues there. The service was pretty good except for the next part that I will explain. The reason for the 3 star review is because I do not eat seafood at all, however the wife loves it so we ended up here for her but I can usually find items that I can eat at most of the sushi spots in town. When we ordered I asked the waiter about the options that had meat and not seafood, I was recommended some of the wagyu beef options, I ordered 2-3 of the wagyu things and the gyoza. Gyoza was fine and the other wagyu options were also fine, except the 8 piece wagyu roll. When received I took a bite and immediately knew something was off, there ended up being something called kani kama in the wagyu roll, which is imitation crab from what I now understand. I instantly felt nauseous. I understand I am eating at a sushi restaurant, but when someone asks what you have for the regular meat options and only orders all the non seafood options, it might be nice to let them know that one of the options that I ordered has seafood in it. The waiter was kind, apologized, and did not charge for the roll, and asked if I wanted anything else however there really wasn't anything else for me to order. The rice was undercooked--almost like risotto. The seaweed for the hand roll was soggy and had an old smell. My friend actually laughed after her first bite, and I felt bad for bringing her. She ended up not eating the rice and just had the sashimi on top. I'm not sure if that's their style, but I've never had sushi with grainy rice. My first experience with Omakase and it was such a great one. Super fresh fish. I did the $50 option and it came with 10 pieces, each with its own unique flavor. The miso soup was the best I've ever had. And the blue crab roll, so simple yet SO delicious. Oh and if you book for an anniversary or birthday, they all sign a personal card for you. I had an amazing experience at Kaze Sake. The food was outstanding, and sitting at the bar truly gave me the ultimate experience. Chef James was incredible each piece of fish quite literally melted like butter. I really enjoyed the omakase experience and will absolutely be returning. This place is excellent -- such a cute hidden gem tucked inside a strip mall off Jones and Russell. I can't believe I've driven past it so many times! The sushi is better than many of the spots on the Strip, without the Strip prices. To top it off, the service was fantastic. I'll definitely be back. read more
