Our second visit to Kausa was less satisfying than the first. For one thing, the menu seemed to have been changed and reduced, and two of the dishes we much enjoyed in March, the Tiridito No. 1 and Picante de Camarones were not listed on the printed menu we were given, although three Tiridito dishes are still listed in the online menu. My wife ordered the same grilled octopus dish she had the last time but found it less interesting because it was not as well seasoned. Perhaps that was because I failed this time to tell the server that we like things very spicy and want them prepared just as they would be served in Peru, not toned down for American tastes. The dish I had, Salmon Quiniotto, consisted of a large piece of grilled salmon on a porridge-like bed with various chopped vegetables mixed in. The salmon was of very good quality and was well cooked, but could have used more seasoning. The Kausa appetizer we had was good, as were the Tres Leches cake, the double espresso, and the pisco sour drinks. After the drinks and the appetizer were delivered promptly, we were surprised at how long it took the kitchen to come up with the entrees, especially since, at around 5:30 to 6:00 on a Tuesday, the restaurant was practically empty. We had to sit there for a long time waiting for our food. From our experience and other reviews, it appears that the restaurant has some issues with consistency. read more

I am in New York on vacation with my mom who is from Peru, so naturally we had to find a Peruvian restaurant. My mom is extremely picky about Peruvian and whether it's authentic. I will say their food is AMAZING! My mom even agreed! I had the Kausa traditional without the ceviche on top. It was the best Kausa I've ever had! I was especially impressed with the purple sauce on the plate which tasted like the Peruvian olives. I also tried the Lomo Saltado which is probably the most authentic I have found. My mom loved their fish ceviche. I'm sad I don't live here because I would be at this restaurant all the time, but this gives me a reason to come back! read more

Great food, great atmosphere, very lively! The whole experience was wonderful until we paid the bill. Just be aware that some servers will put the tip in after they swipe your card and tell you the tip was already added. We figured she meant the tip was added to the bill (the usual 18%) for a party of 5 people. After she printed the receipt, we looked at it and realized she typed in the tip amount after swiping the card since it wasn't on the bill itself. She was very generous with what she thought her tip should be. She gave herself a 25% tip! I have never thought that a server would put in the tip instead of letting the customer, and then to put the tip as 25%?! I almost asked to speak to a manager, but figured it wasn't worth causing a scene over tipping an extra $10. It's the principle though. Why are the servers adding the tip (they think they deserve) instead of the guest tipping? I have lived in NYC for over 15 years and worked as a server myself in the past. I don't know anyone who does this. And I would have ended up tipping 20% had she given me the opportunity to put in the tip. Additionally, it wasn't like the service was impeccable. I had to ask a few times for a second drink as well as asked for a dessert menu after waiting for someone to come to us after eating our meal. So there was definitely room for improvement but nothing I would have tipped less than 20% about. But it just annoyed me that she had added the 25% tip without telling us. Not sure I will return after this experience, but if I do, I will definitely look at what they are putting the tip as before signing the check. read more

Came here for a bottomless brunch deal - when you first come in the environment is welcoming and the service is attentive. The food is great - and then it ends. No attention, no refills, not a single look to our table. We brought this up to the hostess and they said "oh, ok". It's a shame because the food was actually really good and the service completely undermines it. I wish I could take the tip from the servers and give it to chefs. read more

Child of 2 Peruvian immigrants here - hands down this is the best Peruvian restaurant in Manhattan. I ordered takeout and my GOD - I have a checklist to determine if the restaurant is good: The green sauce, the pollo, the ceviche, and the lomo saltado. And if they offer causa. I had pollo with salsa verde and a causa. The chicken was sooooo tender and the seasoning was spot on. Yuca was perfect and the sauce. It is the closest to my favorite version of the green sauce. But it is definitely the best green sauce in NYC. And the causa was light and well done. Have not seen the restaurant itself but I could care less what it looks like when the food satisfied my stomach and cured my homesickness. Well done y'all. read more

This was an awful experience and I was so glad they opened a new Peruvian restaurant in the neighborhood. Service was so clueless. I had like 3 waiters and it took more than 30 minutes to get my drinks and appetizers. The pisco drinks were amateurish. Then i had a steak appetizer with no silverware and after waiting for it for like 5 minutes I got no steak knives , that's when I gave up. I paid I tipped but I left. They will nickel and dime you to death. They charge a 4% credit card fee (which is excessively high for NYC) and also charged $1 for a glass of tap water. Seriously? While the food was okay, the service was horrible, and unforgivable. Came here for a work lunch. The server brings the bill and I hand her my card, expecting the normal interaction. She says "the tip is not included". Obviously, we're clearly not tourists, but even if we were there are either nicer ways of saying it or frankly don't even say it. Authentic Peruvian Food with modern presentation. While it's ambiance doesn't stand out from a place in Passaic, NJ, it has a well-curated menu. The sauces (aji amarillo and aji verde that come with the canchitas) are better than any other Peruvian spot I've personally been to. I keep coming back here for more and am a fan of the Combo Killer Family meal and the aji de gallina. We have come here before once for a brunch, and that maybe was the only thing I wouldn't recommend; not that there is anything wrong with it but it's just the lunch and dinner menus are the star of this place. read more

I've traveled through different corners of this free country for a time now and wherever I go I make it my mission to try our Peruvian food. Some are decent but it pains for me to bother you with mediocrity. I will, however, write you to protect you from losing your hard-earned money. I tried their ceviche mixto and not only did it lack in quantity but in quality of flavor. If there ever was a frozen dinner Peruvian ceviche, this is how it would taste. It's not terrible to the palate, but too simple and not true to the cuisine. The shrimp was precooked but not my lime. Cocktail shrimp were added to a cold lemon soup. They dashed it with some calamari and I may have tasted some fish in there. I'm not sure... as it was a small serving. I may have inhaled it all in a few deep breaths without knowing after some long and very somber sighs. I ordered a Lomo Saltado but it never came. Amazon could have delivered it to me already. I felt terrible but I had to cancel the order after about 45 minutes after it was placed. Even though I sat in a party of 1 (me), I noticed that other tables next to me were being served 4 or more plates at a time. And while the music was lively and playing loud, I heard my inner sad violin playing more boldly. While I was canceling, behind me I heard in Spanish "no se lo habia hecho" [the cook had not done it]. So the bossman seemed satisfied in agreeing not to charge me for the Lomo. So I thought win, win? No, we both lost, unfortunately. Maybe it was a bad day or maybe it was not a good restaurant. I'll leave that up to you to decide. For me, this review is for this day because we both lost and I give myself 1 star as well. But I can't wait to find a restaurant worthy of my 5 stars soon and I'm not difficult, I just don't eat in too many new places. Being adventurous takes much curiosity, courage, and being fearless of risks and losses with a focus on discovering a satisfying treasure. So great to have a new restaurant in Hell's Kitchen!! Stopped in for a late dinner and drinks. There's currently outdoor seating and a nice sized restaurant space. Sadly, due to covid we're not yet allowed to sit at the beautiful bar but hopefully next time. Staff was very welcoming and service was excellent. Tried it with some friends for lunch and prices were somewhat expected for the area, but not worth it for the food. The paella's seafood was definitely not fresh and the shrimp in the middle was extremely overcooked. We also had the Mister Kausa which was the best out of the 3 dishes we got, but even that left a lot to be desired. It tasted fine, but nothing special for a restaurant named Kausa. Finally, the fried calamari appetizer just small layer of calamari at the top with fries at the bottom to prop it up. It was not crunchy or crispy. The worst part was the waitress who after a while after we asked for the check finally came up to us and just told us the price without an itemized receipt. We asked to if we could split the bill which she did allow. They automatically charged a 20% tip on a small party which is kind of ridiculous considering she really didn't do anything and even just brought a pitch of water to our table for us to serve ourselves. However, we realized after the price seemed a little off and when we went back to ask for the receipt. They charged a credit card fee without telling us which is fine if you charge it, but without telling us and then allowing us to split it on separate credit cards without telling us again was ridiculous. What's worse is that the 20% tip was including the credit card fee which is just manipulative. Plenty of better Peruvian places in the city to go to! read more
