They do not take reservations, even for large groups, so come early and leave your name. If you have time to kill, the store upstairs looked pretty intense and bizarre, so might be worth ogling for a few minutes? Plenty of bars nearby, too. We did not have any wait though on a Tue night at 7:30pm. Kenka is a lot of fun! If you walk around on St. Mark's Place, you can't miss it. Very popular with young people, probably because of the prices. This is supposed to be an authentic Izakaya, so you can pretend you're traveling. Before the pandemic, it was always very loud and crowded. The artwork and decor is really cool. Check out the red octopus and I'm not sure what's up with the mannequins. There's even Godzilla and Tokyo Tower on the menu! You will not find California rolls here. My party of 3 waited 2 hours. Good thing I drove there. My BF brought his book. Aside from the wait, the food service definitely made up for it. For a group of 6 people for dinner we waited approximately an hour and half at the nearby Irish pub waiting to be seated, we checked our RSVP occasionally to make sure that our names were not skipped. It seems like an 'Izakaya meets Dive Bar' type of restaurant to me with choices of either tower of Sake or beer. The food choices are almost limitless, from grilled Japanese BBQ, Ramen, Sushi and Sashimi, some of Japan's classic favorites. All our food choices were delicious and served fresh. The service is efficient and the staff are helpful, they even provided a birthday candle for our friend celebrating that day, plus 1 star for that! Kenka was one of my favorite spots on a weeknight for the 7 years I was in NYC. It's not a fancy place.. maybe it's not even a nice place. The Tanuki with the red eyes kind of lets you know what you are in for. You listen to that crazy mountain yodeling music while you're sipping on your watered down cheap Kirin pitcher of beer and you realize you feel really good. I peed in the boys bathroom here for years because I don't read Japanese and no one ever said a thing. Plus there was a huge drawing of a cute kitty in the men's room and no urinal (I'm not a complete idiot). The food here is kinda crazy. You order something like hamburg steak and it comes with 3 french fries. I don't know where the other ones went.. or maybe it's a commentary on how fat we are as Americans. Either way it's worth it for the humor. I always ordered Yaki Soba because it looked like it was alive still, especially after a few drinks. The fish skins kind of wriggle slowly around the noodles. Delicious. You never know what might happen here. What a fun and hysterical place! I love all the cheesy nostalgic posters and artwork that decorate this place, they are soooo funny, they crack me up! The food is good and the price is reasonable, and they are open late. We came once around 2:30am and the kitchen was still open.... fabulous! My boyfriend and I came in on a Thursday night for dinner and to meet up with his cousin. We arrived around 6:30PM, and within 5 minutes of signing our names, our party was called up. However, because we were still waiting on his cousin, we couldn't get a table yet. Kenka will make you wait until your party is all there and complete. However, once everyone is there, we just had to tell the staff members, and we were seated immediately. While walking through Kenka, it was difficult trying to squeeze through between benches filled with hungry customers and staff members rushing to attend to such customers. Music filled the room, making it hard for us not to scream at each other when having our conversations. The menu looked somewhat old and torn, but the low low prices caught our attention. We suffered from decision fatigue trying to pick something to eat, but after 20 minutes of perusing through the menu, I finally settled on some calamari. The entree size of the calamari still looked somewhat small, but it was only about $6.50, so I got what I paid for. It looked promising, but when I took a bite, the calamari was very chewy - I had to spend about 30 seconds chewing in order to get each bite out. It was heavily salted, and I had to use all of the mayo to get the salty aftertaste out of my mouth. I felt somewhat full with this, but I wasn't stuffed. I recommend getting one of each and sharing the food and drinks with friends out from of Kenka while you wait. Sure it makes the staff give you dirty looks, but they are going to do that anyways and there is nothing that can be done about it. You might as well not starve in the process. But, is it really worth the wait? That depends on your ultimate end goal for visiting...Some come for the cheap pitchers of Sapporo, which is worth it. And, then some come for the food, which is not worth it at all. As far as sodas go, I love their Yuzi soda, but I don't know if it is worth the $4.50 that I pay per glass for it. Avoid the spinach, since it is served cold with no seasoning but bonito on top. The grilled squid here is tough and bland. However, the agedashi tofu is the best in the area. The Taiwanese Ramen was novel, but it was lacking in flavor. The grilled eel on rice was bland rubber for $8.50. The okonomiyaki I ordered had glass noodles inside, which took about 40 minutes for them to cook and was also bland. I am super duper surprised I had never written a review for Kenka before! I've been here at least 10-15 times in my life dating back to 2007 and each experience never EVER disappoints! It's always fun to come with a group of friends, especially when their main objective is to drink. Now time to give the real rundown from all of my Kenka wisdom and pass it down to the next generation. First, get here early! On weekdays (specifically M-Th), it usually doesn't get overly-crowded at the open at 6pm, but the crowd will build up FAST! You will usually get a seat if you get here by 6, but as the night progresses a wait builds up. As for weekends (specifically Friday and Saturday), the most popular days, there WILL be a crowd outside before 6pm, so get there early to put your name down if you don't want to wait. Small parties get in fairly quickly, but parties of 7+ can easily wait over an hour. Once you get in, you will notice nude photos on the wall and other interesting artifacts. It's a nice touch that peeks the interests of the curious, especially when drunk. On the menu, there are definitely some interesting tidbits and rules you should be VERY AWARE of as the night goes on. Some of those rules include no vomiting on the premises, no sake-bombs, no fighting, etc....the usual right? Any broken rules result in a $20 fine, so get that wallet ready if you're going to drink till your liver explodes because I've actually had a friend break one of those rules and pay up. If you're looking to celebrate and drink heavily, I highly recommend buying a bottle or a few bottles of the sake. Great way to lose your sobriety very quickly. In addition, there are the pitchers of beer you can get or for the more adventurous the "snake shot". YES "snake shot"! There's an actual dead rattle snake inside the bottle they serve you with and it's some potent stuff. As for food, there's plenty to mention, but some of my favorites include the french fries (with ketchup and mayo) and anything chicken, just to keep it simple. If you're looking to challenge someone, then by all means order the bull penis and turkey testicles. Call it very bizarre as many will, but they actually are quite appetizing, if unappealing. However, if you're looking to "eat" here, maybe those 2 items shouldn't be on your mind. If you do stay here all night till close to 4am (closing), which I have done on multiple occasions, be ready for the very intoxicated that are still there to entertain you as they (specifically the girls) bumble, stumble and possibly even make out in front of you. The waitress was not sympathetic; it was more like she didn't know the concept of an entree how it should be served together if people were dining together at a table, nor did she apologize for any inconvenience, just advised to wait since the kitchen is super busy. They definitely have great deals on beers, so it might be a good idea dropping by to have a beer or two with something fried. Any sort of sushi or raw meat handling, I would highly suggest that you kill your cravings elsewhere. Another thing about customer service here, they seem careless of customer opinions. As 6 years experience in waitress, I'd be curious if someone left a dish untouched, regardless of the price of the dish. For desserts, they give you this little plastic sauce bowl with colored sugar, so that you can make a cotton candy at a machine outside of the restaurant. Kenka is a really fun, cool Japanese restaurant. There's a lot of seating, but that doesn't stop a pretty long line from forming during dinner, so make sure you hit it up before the dinner rush begins or you'll be in for quite a wait. The decor is super quirky, and consists of some really cool, retro Japanese posters (some of them more risque than others). When you walk in, you'll immediately notice how low the restaurant is - it's almost a self fulfilling cycle, where patrons need to shout and be loud to be heard over everyone else shouting and being loud. There are little baskets on the ground by every table for you to place your coats/purses and other things. The menu is ridiculously decorated - there's so much going on with the incoherent loud text, mistranslations (on purpose?) and crazy random pictures that I actually found it really hard to read (I know, I'm old. Gotta get my reading glasses). They had the standard fare (katsu with rice, udon, yakitori) as well as some more exotic options (deep fried whole frog, bull penis, maggot omelet were all on the specials menu). The prices were shockingly low for midtown (almost all the food was under $10 and a lot of it was around $5). However, there's an 8$ minimum per person per table. The food itself is the standard greasy, quick fare. Even the ramen was kind of subpar - it tasted less like the ramen you're going to find at a ramen restaurant, and more like they did a very good job cooking the block you buy at the store - even down to the distinctive curly noodles. For $6.50, it's ridiculously cheap for a bowl of restaurant ramen, but also ridiculously expensive for a bowl of convenience store ramen. One of my favorites. You have to line up before opening if you want to get a table, and put your name on the written list outside the restaurant. The food is outstanding and the alcohol is very cheap here. The service was responsive even though it was busy. We were able to continuously put more orders in throughout the night.
