Kim's Kuban knocked me out of the park. Its very rare I go to a restaurant on vacation and the restaurant is what makes me want to visit again - but Kim's Kuban did that for me. The Birria tacos were to die for- and thats from an LA native who now is NYC based. The breaded palomilla (bistec empanizado) was also great- the seasoning on the breading is to die for. The spot doesn't scream best cuban food and tacos- its off the main road in Key West - but wow they delivered. Additionally they were SUPER fast - we ordered and it was done in less than 10 mins. We stopped by at this place on our way out of Key West. A small shop with only 4-5 chairs to sit. We ordered fish tacos, house special fish (fried fish with yellow rice, black beans and toasted bread&butter) and chicken burrito. The portions were quite big - we had to save half for dinner. Also, they were very generous with fish (the amount of fish in both dishes was very big for a drive in place). For those who like it spicy - I think you should mention it when ordering because all food had no hot sauce at all. Total bill for all 3 orders plus 2 bottles of sweet tea came up to ~48$. We were in Key West for a week and went on a mission in search of the island's best traditional Cubano (pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard--no lettuce, tomato, mayo known in Key West as a "Cuban Mix"). We managed five lunches, served only with fries for sharing with a glass of water. We wanted to make sure we could compare "apples to apples" with each location which included Sandy's Cafe; Ana's Cuban Cafe; El Siboney; 5 Brothers; and Kim's Kuban. In rank order, we most enjoyed Sandy's Cafe. The sandwich was hot and the bread had a nice crunch; the pulled/shredded pork nicely spiced; the cheese melted that coated the meats nicely; and the overall taste delicious. The French fries were delightfully seasoned and complemented the sandwich. This was the most traditional of the Cubanos and the place we would return to the most. Next up would be a toss-up between Ana's and El Siboney. While the taste was there, the sandwich needed just a few more minutes on the griddle. A trick with a Cubano is ensuring that the meats are hot--or at least warm--within, and this wasn't fully the case in either establishment. Still, they merited "runner-up" status. The products were fresh and a decent balance of all ingredients. We wanted to love 5 Brothers as the charm of the place was there. However, the meats within were literally half-cold, particularly the ham. Taste, yes. Texture, no. Finally, as we were staying in Old Town, we walked all the way to Kim's Kuban where we had read good things. Alas, this place was the largest disappointment and not worth the walk. The ham overpowered the rest of the sandwich--and it was cold with unmelted cheese. Alas, we would not return to Kim's Kuban, which was also on a busy highway. We look forward to returning to the Keys to continue our search! read more

We were lucky. There were four of us and four seats inside. It was raining, hard, so even though there were outdoor seats that was not an option this rainy day. The rooster wandering around outside did not mind the rain though (o; Anyway, we had the grouper taco, which I think by far is the best bang for your buck and tasted great! Four tacos with lots of grouper and veggies. I wanted authentic Cuban cuisine so I ordered picadillo especial, which came with the picadillo with excellent spices, olives, and raisins, yellow rice, black beans, and the tasty bread! I seriously don't understand how this place has this high a rating. First off, it has that hole in the wall vibe, the sort that makes it vaguely uncomfortable eating in - not a lot of space, cheap seats, feeling like you're in the way of people ordering - but that is completely excusable if the food is amazing, which it often is with that sort of place (since they can ignore all the niceties of a proper sit-down restaurant and just focus on the food - though that said, it is kind of inexcusable to not be a to-go-only place and have zero bathrooms available for guests to use.) Anyway, I was here because I wanted to find the best Cuban sandwiches in the area while I was there for the day, since really good Cuban sandwiches are much harder to find elsewhere. It came down to El Siboney for lunch and here for dinner, and there is just no contest between them. The sandwich I got from El Siboney was a glorious thing, far better than the sum of its equally good parts. The sandwich I got here was a sandwich. It was a decent enough sandwich, I didn't dislike eating it, but it didn't really "meld", it was just some decent meat on some decent bread. I also got a side of plantains, and to their credit, they give you a lot of plantains, but they were weirdly... runny is the best way to describe it. Not sure if they were overripe or just not cooked right? They were super gooey. My wife just ordered the steak platter, and it was some seriously low-quality, extra-chewy steak. I forget how much she paid for it, but it was way more than it was worth. Maybe we just got them on an off day, but I don't understand the high ratings. For a decent Cuban breakfast at a great price, stop by Kim's Kuban and DO NOT forget the cafe con leche and Cuban toast. My friend and I rented bikes to head out in the morning in search of breakfast and Kim's is definitely a regular spot for a lot of regulars because folks seemed to flood in after we arrived. The indoor space is small but there is a restroom available and counter seating. You can also sit at an outdoor counter, but be sure to listen for your order. My breakfast platter was about $7 featuring fried eggs, bacon, Cuban toast and a home fries "patty." It's the basics up in this piece, but when you're hungry, that's all you need. We were visiting from out of town and wanted a quick bite on a Sunday; lots of places were already closed. We ordered the following items: the Cuban mix sandwich, chicken burrito and side order of sweet plantains. Plantains|| were tasty, can't really mess that up. Chicken burrito|| good size, however all it had was yellow rice and dry chicken. Not sure why they didn't incorporate the other items mentioned on the menu. Cuban Mix|| we asked for a Cuban sandwich, but the girl said Cuban mix! We are okay to try it, but not a fan of the mustard, lettuce, lack of cheese and the quality of meat used. We had the beef empanadas...very good, but could be tastier, the filling was a bit too wet for my taste. The black bean soup was outstanding. One of the best Cuban mix sandwiches, hands down! I was in key west for 4 days and ate a meal here 3 days in a row. It's a small location, so seating is extremely limited, such as 5-7 stools along an interior table. The menu includes many Cuban dishes, but also has quesadillas, tacos and burritos. The Cuban Mix sandwich was heaven. The Cuban bread was pressed, warm on the inside and flaky on the outside. The marinated pork inside the sandwich elevated this sandwich to new levels. The tender pork was marinated in strong and aromatic spices, piled into ham, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. Each bite had a punch of flavors, from the tender, juicy pork, salty Swiss cheese, which was balanced out by the pickles and mustard. Word cannot do justice to how delicious this sandwich was. The size is great, comparable to a 6-inch sub, but much more filling. Other notable sandwiches are the pastor and turkey if you looking for a lighter and cold cut option. But definitely try the Cuban Mix. It might be the most delicious sandwich you have ever tasted. read more
