My first and last sushi experience was about 25 years ago at a joint I don't think I ever knew the name of. Even when I ate meat, I never ate any seafood aside from canned tuna. That night I had a roll of avocado, seaweed and rice. It was a textural nightmare for me and I got sick after about three bites. That turned me off of sushi for good, or so I thought. Enter Kimu Sushi. Hus was craving sushi and found a place with vegan/vegetarian options for me. He ordered a few rolls and handed his phone to me and I chose the "Veggie Tempura Roll." I thought it wasn't a super big serving so if I didn't like it, it wouldn't be a serious deal and he'd likely finish it if I didn't. The order was placed and a bit later, it was delivered. I opened the packaging for the roll, sprinkled some soy sauce on it (I know now you're supposed to dip it in the sauce, but I didn't know) and took a tentative bite. Man. When I tell you I was so surprised, I am not lying. The crunchy tempura inside the roll was delicious. I not only was able to eat this whole roll, I really, really enjoyed it and I cannot wait to have it again! Thank you, Kimu Sushi, for rewarding me greatly for giving sushi another chance!
Cozy spot for incredible sushi! I tried Golden Eye Snapper for the first time ever, and it might be one of my new favorites! The lightly torched skin gives each bite a nice, firm textural contrast against the delicate, tender meat. The yuzu garnish puts it over the top! My other favorites are Striped Jack and Hokkaido Scallop. My friend, who doesn't really like eating fish, loves their Double S Roll (tempura shrimp & fried scallops.) The service has been mostly wonderful. We did run into one hiccup when we found some hard, jagged black chunks in the Double S Roll that we couldn't eat. They looked and felt like metal or charred debris, but the staff insisted they were black sesame seeds. Otherwise, the staff has been upbeat and super friendly. If you're looking for your next unforgettable bite, do yourself a favor and order the Golden Eye Snapper!
The sushi was excellent, service was good, friendly, unpretentious, good vibes. Only question, why C & W music? Please change it to Japanese relaxing music.
This place is amazing. It's a very small restaurant, so I recommend a reservation or at least joining the waitlist. We got misos (great price!), salmon collar (was a hit with the whole table including the kids), baked lobster roll (incredible, must get! Comes out on fire), and the TNT roll (spicy). The kids got California roll and California roll and the California roll especially was better than most sushi places. Everything was very fresh. We live far but next time we pass by the area we will definitely come back again.
We stopped by here to grab some sushi for late night. They were so nice we walked in and they sat us down and provided us with menu and waters. We had some sake and some sushi and some hand rolls. We were probably one of their last customers for the day and i honestly couldn't even tell that they were closing they didn't kick us out or anything matter a fact i lost track of time could have been the sake but the sushi was delicious i really appreciate them. I would definitely come back.
My friend and I were craving dressed up oysters and this place looked promising. We were mostly there for the oysters, but the sushi totally blew us away, too! It was a pretty traditional looking restaurant with tables and a sushi bar. We opted with the sushi bar and it was super nice that the sushi chef just presented his food directly to us. He was so nice and it was fun to see how proud he was of his work. I got some nigiri a la carte: hamachi toro, chu-toro, sea bream, and jumbo scallops. They were all huge and super fresh! The chu-toro practically melted in my mouth so I can't even imagine how amazing their o-toro would be. The scallops were apparently directly from Japan and were also incredible. We also got a dozen oysters and they were so good we ended up ordering another dozen. They were fat and juicy and a bit creamy with the perfect ratio of brine and sauce. Overall it was a great experience and is a great place for a high end meal!

This place is great for a variety of special rolls and good service. We had the spicy edamame and it was quite spicy rather than the mild kick! The lollipop roll was meh and hard to maintain its integrity. The sunshine roll was really good along with the rainbow roll. The sensual pleasure roll with scallop was decent. The service was great and the staff was very attentive. The shop was very lively and had good dinner vibes of loud but enjoyable. The parking is a bit tough if you can't find any on their lot.
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Solid value in downtown Long Beach. The hubby and I tried this place for lunch on a Saturday a few months ago. It seemed like it'd be better than the previous sushi place that used be there (which I don't think I ever tried), and we were pleasantly surprised by how much we liked it. We ordered; - Spicy edamame - freshly fried with good garlic--great flavors - sushi and sashimi combo (pretty presentation, came with soup and salad--a good value) - pan fried veggie noodles with tofu (very good, with generous portions--appreciated this veggie option) It's not super-fancy, but the food was good to great and reasonably priced. Service was good also. Would definitely check out again.
Wonderful date vibe! We came here as a party of two on a Friday night and were seated with menus right away. The menu is easy to follow and has a lot of the classic appetizers, hand rolls, nigiri options, and special rolls! Here, the prices are fair! We ordered the fatty tuna nigiri, Long Beach roll, sunshine roll, and spicy tuna crunch roll. The food all came out quickly and beautifully presented. The Long Beach roll had a great crunch from the asparagus and the yuzu really added to the flavor. The fatty tuna nigiri had fresh wasabi on top, which is a must!! I also appreciate that this restaurant has its own parking lot. It's easy to get to and you don't have to worry about your car while you eat.
This spot seemed to have a parking lot however when we got there, it was packed. I don't know if it was because of the weekend of the Grand Prix or whatever the situation may be we had to find parking on the street two blocks down. We sat at the bar and the sushi, chefs and server were nice. We ordered their spicy edamame which was loaded with flavor by far the best spicy edamame. I love the garlic and chili combos with a little citrus flavor. Also ordered the stinky roll, which is spicy tuna on the inside and salmon on the outside which I liked very much couldn't decide on a second roll so I asked the server to surprise us and kind of regret doing that because he had brought us a roll that I was already cringing at reading the description on the menu which was their long beach roll however, the crunch it had on the inside was very nice and not too heavy. I don't feel that asparagus should be anywhere near a sushi roll, but that was my bad. Also ordered their Yuzu cheesecake, which was a no for me. It was too strong and screaming Yuzu simialr to lemon zest and super tiny. The quality of the ingredients they use here are pretty good. I would come back to try other items, but I do not suggest getting their dessert or their long beach roll.
Visited: 11/8/25 Baked Lobster Roll: 9/10 ($16.95) Baked Scallop Roll: 10/10 ($16.95) Deep Fried Matcha Cake: 9/10 ($5.95) The interior is definitely on the smaller side, and because it's such a popular spot, we had to wait a bit before finding seats. Parking is also very limited! Make sure you're in the correct designated spaces since the lot is shared with another restaurant - Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles. (I got a warning as I had made this mistake.) That said, the food absolutely made everything worth it. The décor is cozy with dim lighting, and the presentation was such a fun surprise. Our rolls were brought out on fire, which made for an incredible photo moment. The flame went out quickly, so it didn't feel unsafe at all, just super cool. Flavor-wise, everything was amazing. The rolls were warm, creamy, and so satisfying. The deep-fried matcha cake was the perfect sweet finish (lightly crisp on the outside, soft inside, and a great way to end the meal after all the savory dishes.)
I have never been to a restaurant so many times without getting tired of it. I've been eating at Kimu for years and I can confirm this is the best sushi restaurant in town by a landslide. The sashimi pieces are big, cold, and always fresh. I always order spicy edamame, gyoza, salmon sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, and miso soup. It's so delicious I crave it on a weekly basis. Come here! You won't regret it. The owner is often behind the sushi bar completing orders and is very kind and caring. The food is mouthwatering, the presentation is impeccable, and the price keeps me coming back!

Small cozy restaurant with a small parking lot on the side. Came here a handful of times and they have fresh nigiri. Some items are a bit pricey. Service is always great, since we order a lot they always allow us to get a larger table. Chef Sky use to be here and he was amazing but service is still really good. read more

Staff was friendly and attentive . Service was quick I love the free check in item . That starts your meal off right . We ordered soo many items and they were all amazing . The garlic edamame had amazing flavor, calamari my sister really enjoyed the lobster roll, baked salmon roll, tempura shrimp, miso soup and also roll. We're all really delicious. The presentation like other said was a nice touch. Subtracted a star because of these issues : my crispy tuna appetizer wasn't very crispy. The tables were a little crammed to optimize indoor seating and it was unsettling to have to walk outside to use the restroom. Other than these Issues I would def return when visiting downtown. read more
I recently visited a restaurant for the first time with my sisters, one of which is getting married and chose this spot to celebrate! From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding, setting a positive tone for our dining experience. We started with appetizers, including the crispy rice spicy tuna and the gyoza. Both dishes were absolutely amazing and I highly recommend them for anyone visiting for the first time. The crispy rice spicy tuna was particularly memorable, the flavors of these dishes were a delightful blend of crispy and savory. For the main course, we enjoyed an assortment of sushi, with the lobster rolls standing out as my personal favorite. Thumbs up, would come again. Try try try the crispy rice!!! read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in for some sushi on our way to the hotel from San Diego, and it was so delicious! It looks like it might have just opened up but it was so good! It I'd a tiny little sushi shop but it's far more unassuming than the actual restaurant. The lobster roll came out literally on fire, and the oyster shooter came with all sorts of eccoutrements. The servers were very helpful and friendly, and also very attentive! There is ample parking next to the building, and there is a restroom outside of the back of the building with a code. The eel was fresh! It was cooked very well. The oyster tasted incredibly good - they have an in with a supplier for sure. The miso soup was a great starter, and the green tea ice cream was an excellent ending to a very wonderful meal. read more

Located along the eastern edge of downtown Long Beach, Kimu Sushi serves up a variety of Japanese inspired cuisine in the space previously occupied by a different sushi restaurant. It opened in mid-2024, and serves a weekday lunch special, which I took advantage of. The fish was good and varied, sushi rice was fine, service was sound, and the price was reasonable. It's a nicely remodeled space inside, with dark tones giving it an evening feel, even during mid-day. It wasn't too crowded, so was allowed to sit at a table even for a party of one. As mentioned, there is a lunch special, so got the sushi combo ($23.95) consisting of 8 chef's choice of sushi, one spicy tuna roll (a choice amongst others), miso soup, and a side salad. Service was great, delivering some ice water (keeping it refilled), and then bringing out the soup, salad, and sushi platter individually as I completed each course. The miso soup was fine, nice and hot (not warm but not scalding either). This version didn't have any tofu, but was quite strong with miso. The salad was simple, but very good with field greens (instead of simple lettuce), a great ginger salad dressing, and avocado. I think it might have been the best complementary salad I've eaten at a Japanese-themed restaurant. The sushi was varied enough so that I really liked some, and didn't care as much for others. It came with a full (8 pieces) of a really good spicy tuna roll. It was expertly made, with just a little layer of rice and plenty of lightly packed minced tuna. I really liked it, making me wish I had tried their California Roll roll as well. In terms of their nigiri, it was eight pieces and the ones I could easily identify were albacore, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp...and saba (mackerel). I don't remember the last time I had mackerel at a sushi place...so ended up trying that first. I really liked it, but immediately had two thoughts: 1. really meant for people who love fish and actually relish the fishiness of highly oily fish (like canned) 2. should have eaten these two pieces last....even with the ginger, I couldn't cleanse my palate enough. The sushi rice made no difference with the mackerel, but was really good with the other pieces of fish. I also thought the salmon was good, with decent pieces. As a whole, good quality of fish for what you are paying. Another thing to mention was the presentation of all the food was top notch. I actually took a moment to admire the sushi platter, with the nice touches of lemon wedges, plumeria petals, and some sort of leaf (banana, maybe). Each piece had been individually scored cross grain, which definitely adjusted the texture while chewing. The music playing (rather loudly) inside was interesting too...modern piano trio playing classical pieces (not just musak versions of contemporary hits). This added to the night-time feel of the place. Payment was afterwards and simple, and they used this really neat rollaway box (with their logo) to bring the check and to transport the credit card away and back. It's funny that I start to notice such things when the food and service are very good, just wanting to remember the different aspects of a great dining experience. read more

They just opened and the wife and I wanted to give them a try on Sunday May 5th at 11:30am. It's a short walk from Aqua Towers at Ocean and Elm, but they have plenty of parking in the back. We were very excited and they did not disappoint! We were greeted by the manager and head chef. The staff could not be more gracious. The new interior is exquisite! We ordered sake, wine, spicy edemame, shrimp tempora, rainbow carpaccio, and Philly roll. Outstanding!!! We could have continued eating and drinking the rest of the day! Kings, Beluga, Mafia, etc...heads up! There's new sushi in downtown LB! read more

I remember when this place used to be Maru Maki sushi and sad when they closed down. Heard good things about the new sushi restaurant that took their place and decided to check it out during lunch time. Parking was easy as they have their own parking lot. Inside, it was small but has a nice ambiance with Japanese decor all around. I ordered the lunch sushi combo which came with 8 pcs of sushi, miso soup, salad, and a choice of side, I picked the spicy tuna roll all for $24. I checked in on Yelp and got a complimentary hot sake too. The sushi was fresh and a good rice to fish ratio. Salad was good too. Overall, I thought the sushi combo was worth it. read more

This is my favorite sushi bar thus far!! I'm always looking for the best sushi but this is the best, hands down! They had top notch service, everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a Michelin chef serving it up, so I had very high expectations and they surpassed them. Sushi rolls and blue crab hand roll was bomb. The spicy edamame had perfect flavor. The ambiance was cool, small place but it's intimate, just how I like it. 10/10 recommend!! read more

I came here for my birthday celebration and had a great time! Our server, April, went above and beyond!! She did a birthday shot with me and had everyone at the restaurant sang happy birthday to me. This is such a satisfactory meal. Each 10 piece was so perfect with fat and fresh sashimi on top of properly cooked rice. I couldn't believe my eyes when the chef was handling the sushi plate to me over the bar. The server is so kind and friendly. You really need to come here. What can I say? Sushi is amazing. The ambience is perfect. The staff is really good. I honestly think this is one of a better sushi place. I've been to. I suggest getting the Kimu Roll which is their signature role it's amazing!
