$40 meatloaf & beer. Pre tax and tip. Delicious. Very good service. BINGO was a blast, consider it dinner and a show for the price of your meal. Kings Highway at the Ace Hotel does an excellent job of making you feel like royalty, which is important, because the menu prices certainly expect you to feel that way. But let's be honest, it's still a hotel restaurant. And hotel restaurants in premium destinations, like Palm Springs, rarely cater to travelers with beer budgets with champagne tastes. You're paying for the location, the atmosphere, and here specifically the mythology wrapped around this property as much as the meal itself. For this isn't just any hotel, this is the Ace Hotel. It is practically sacred ground for the hipster pilgrimage. Its OG ground zero for the influencer backdrop. In many ways, its trajectory mirrors what happened to Coachella or Burning Man: once an affordable, quirky alternative experience, now polished into a premium-priced cultural institution. Still, despite a few noticeable cracks in the armor, there's a lot to like here. First, the food. The meatloaf was soft, juicy, and flavorful. It's comfort food without becoming pretentious. The carrots were cooked perfectly. Those were tender, but still with enough firmness to remind you they were once vegetables. The mashed potatoes were exactly what mashed potatoes should be comforting and neutral. A great backdrop to the main. While scanning the fine details of the menu, there's a small line buried almost in fine print atop the dinner selection offering a glass of wine or beer with your entrée for an additional $8. As silly as it sounds, that qualifies as a bargain. Then came dessert - a warm sticky toffee date cake topped with vanilla ice cream, candied pecans, and caramel drizzle. Spectacular!!! I was lucky because it wasn't even on the menu yet, but I won it during on a game of BINGO. And BINGO night itself was pretty darn entertaining. Norma Lee High and Ms. Cherry Superstar kept the entire room moving with sharp narration, quick banter, and infectious energy. Their chemistry carried the night and gave the restaurant an atmosphere that felt more like dinner theater than simple dining. It's not filthy, adult, or aggressive, but for whatever reason its just not designed for everyone. There are references younger guests miss. If you proudly voted for Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz, Tuesday night at Kings Highway may not be your scene. Now with all that said, some issues did appear, but none of these were devastating individually, but collectively enough to dull the shine a bit. For starters, the public-facing information for the restaurant desperately needs attention. The online BINGO times are incorrect, some listings still reference 2025 dates, the start and end times are wrong, and the online menu doesn't match the physical menu they hand you at the table. And one menu item stretched the truth. The ribs advertised "homemade BBQ sauce," yet sitting behind the counter was a commercial sauce bottle bought in bulk. It's a small detail, but details matter when you're charging premium prices. Then there are the sticky counters. Strangely enough, this isn't a cleanliness issue. The counter itself were clean. The tackiness likely comes from years of commercial sanitizers slowly breaking down the varnish, leaving behind a sticky film that some might mistake as something other than clean. In reality, it probably means they wipe the counters down constantly. They just haven't refinished the surface in a very long time. So the issue is upkeep. Speaking of upkeep, there is a 5% dine-in surcharge. A surcharge that does not go to the staff feels less like hospitality and more like naked profiteering. At least if the cost were simply built into the menu prices, the service staff would likely benefit from increased tip percentages alongside the restaurant itself. Additionally, when the bill is presented it's by the handheld computer that never leaves the servers hand. There's no physical copy. There's no chance to review and calculate. It's an under the gun sort of thing. I don't have those anxieties, but others may. I do enjoy a more leisurely approach to settling the bill because it is all part of the dining experience. All these financials as presented, leaves a sour final impression after an otherwise genuinely good dining experience and entertaining night. Lastly, and this is more about Palm Springs as a whole than Kings Highway specifically, I hope the city avoids falling into the same trap Vegas did years ago when the experience starts getting overshadowed by the price tag. Because once that happens, people stop talking about the atmosphere, the food, or whatever. They only talk about what everything cost. Still, Kings Highway succeeds where many hotel restaurants fail in that at least on Tuesday nights it gives you a memorable evening. Maybe not a perfect one, but definitely one you'll talk about afterward. read more

We stopped by for a Mother's Day brunch. The patio by the pool is nice. We had sat out there before. If I visit again I'd be interested in sitting inside. The brunch was really good. I ordered the breakfast burrito. It was loaded with all the good stuff: bacon, egg, potato, avocado, salsa. Served on a bed of tortilla chips with a side of salsa verde. My wife ordered a waffle and waffle and thought it was fine. They gave her macaroons to go as a Mother's Day gift, which was sweet. Service was fine. We came at night as a party of 4 and for a diner, that was probably one of the most expensive regular grilled chicken sandwiches we have ever had. The coleslaw was plain and crunchy, the grilled chicken was actually more salty and dryer than the crispy chicken. Service was mediocre. No frill, got our order, brought our order and gave us the check. They didn't really check in unless we tried to flag someone down. It was not busy, we were probably the one in 3 groups that were there. There was not too much of an ambiance, it was booth seating and table seating. Ace hotel management must be so desperate and peeing themselves to have to resort to such extreme price increases on the King's Highway breakfast menu. How embarrassing. Here's some examples of how prices have changed compared to last year: Pancakes - from $18 to $26 (44% increase) Breakfast plate - from $22 to $28 (27% increase) Side of bacon -from $8 to $12 (50% increase) A cold brew coffee is $12 and a regular mug of drip coffee is $7. There's also a random 5% fee added to everything just because they can. Adding insult to injury - they used to have the best bacon but downgraded to 3rd rate bacon that was tough and chewy. It's a shame because this used to be my go to breakfast spot for years every time I visited Palm Springs. Hats off to the clowns who approved these price changes. read more

A tiny piece of wheat toast, shoddy presentation, no jammy tomatoes, no sprouts... with a much higher price point?? The dish is great for sharing: classic hummus; tzatziki; whipped feta; cucumbers; and pita chips. I have eaten here several times now. This place is wonderful. The vibe is casual hip, and the food is delicious. They have a mezze trio plate that is my favorite. The hummus is the thicker type, which I love, with 2 other dips, grilled pita, and crudite vegetables that are "bottomless". But I'm not sure i will be coming back as long as the prices stay where they are. The prices are close to DOUBLE what they should be. While i love the property, this is not a 5 star resort guys. Last time I was there it cost me $60 for a breakfast burrito and yogurt. The food is good, but it's not $60 / person good. On top of that there is a new mystery service charge of 5% that goes who knows where. You can't double your prices AND charge a service charge. In the age of a la cart / pay for every little thing that used to be free / every business turning into the airline business model, maybe not doing that is a novel idea? What a Vibe!! Someone suggested us this place for brunch in Palm Springs. The interior is lovely with beautiful details. We had pets with our group so we couldn't sit indoors, however the patio too was perfect to spend a nice time having lunch with live music at the pool and total vacation vibes. I have eaten here for years ever since they opened. Over the years the food cycles between serviceable to terrible - at the moment the food is pretty good. BUT they just raised their already high prices AND want to add a 5% SURCHARGE to the bill THAT DOES NOT GO TO YOUR SERVER This translates to about $35 for a short stack of pancakes (with tax and tip), no meat, no eggs, no sides. The Ace Hotel must be on severely hard times because in just one year the prices on this menu have inflated approximately 40%. On top of that, the quality of the food and what they give you has diminished. For breakfast for two with tip, the total came to nearly $100. One order of pancakes with literally nothing else cost $28. One cold brew cost $12. The prices are outrageous considering they have cheapened the menu. A side of bacon increased from $8 to $12 and they are giving you the lowest quality bacon they can find at the grocery store. It's kind of incredulous and it begs the question whether they are just trying to torpedo the entire restaurant and hotel so it can close faster. A lot of questions!! This place used to be fantastic. The interior is still very cute and a nice ambience, but I cannot justify ever dining here again based on the price of food alone. Been here twice. Really cute vibe that recalls an old school diner with clear hipster influences. The crowd also was mostly groups of party goers and a few families and couples. Mimosa and Spritzes were nice as was the steak and eggs , which I had for breakfast and for dinner one time my boyfriend and shared a salad and the fusilli. My teenager enjoyed the fish tacos. So C was having a hard time. He had been through a divorce. He had fallen in love with the wrong person - or really the right person, but then he had handled it wrong. It took a lot to make him happy and he let the world know it. Still, he was a person of merit, of ideas. We went to the desert to see a show at Pappy and Harriet's. The show was amazing. In the morning, after some hemming and hawing, I decided to take him to the ACE Hotel and the diner there. I remembered coming with friends years before. It felt like a real diner - but something elevated - special. It was still special - the atmosphere. But the food - good god. Really almost as good as a Denny's. I had two tiny, anemic eggs, scattered squares of potatoes and two stringy pieces of bacon. It was twenty-eight dollars. C got the same but his eggs were poached. He leaned over the table like he grew up in a trailer, desperate, when in fact he had grown up solidly middle class in Denver. His long beard fell into his eggs. He leaned on the table like someone twice his age. Earlier, he told me how he almost died of ink poisoning when he went to Italy to get a full body tattoo. And now, he was drinking a ten dollar coffee at this place I had once thought was so special. Service was amazing. Atmosphere perfect. One of the worst dining experiences i've ever had. My partner and I waited over an hour for our food which was subpar at best. Several tables around us had sent items back to the kitchen for issues with their food. No apologies from the wait staff for the food delays. An iced coffee was $10.50. Service was quick and straight to the point as it was not a very busy Sunday afternoon. Everyone has preconceived notions about diner food, but our meals were surprisingly very tasty! We had the breakfast burrito, eggs benedict, and a side order of the ricotta pancakes. All were large portions and flavorful. It may have had some updates to make it more modern, but it still feels very retro. As for the food, they have many 21st century items that meet the needs of people today that like clean and healthy foods. I had the pleasure of enjoying a delicious dinner at King's Highway during our stay at ACE this weekend and I was extremely pleased with the service and food. We started out with cocktails, they were delicious and well presented, our meal consisted of Mushroom Ravioli and the Caesar Salad, both dishes were bursting with flavor and complemented each other very well. The portions were generous and the food was plated nicely, the ingredients were fresh and noticeably made in-house. The ambiance was relaxed, retro and comfortable and our server was attentive, friendly, and welcoming. She served our meal with a smile and offered recommendations and went out of her way to get information when we asked for it. On the coffee side, I got a cup of mediocre, stalish Stumptown coffee, and I was never offered (much less requested) a warm-up, because I was afraid it would be another $8. The huevos rancheros were beneath ordinary, at any cost. Two stale tortillas, two fried eggs, topped with boring salsa verde. Brownish avocado slices as garnish. Pico de gallo on the side that had no taste at all. Were there beans? If so, they weren't noticeable. That's it amigos. The restaurant was empty and it took 20 min to get my breakfast. I had to get up to pay my bill, and was asked if I wanted a take-out cup of coffee. Yes, they would have charged me another $8. Oh, and if you wanted, say, a take-out croissant, how about another $12? There was no trace of hospitality...that would have been an extra charge I guess.
