This Vietnamese spot in Chinatown is truly a gem! I've been meaning to go here for a while, but only got the chance to recently. When I went on a chilly day, the place was packed and we had to wait for a bit before we got a seat (but it wasn't too bad). The interior is casual with lots of Vietnamese decor and music. Kitchen Co Ut isn't spectacular or amazing when compared to some of the options you can get in other states like California, but it has all the staples and some of the more difficult to get dishes, and they are all solidly executed. I always used to complain about the lack of good, authentic Vietnamese restaurants in NYC - but now Kitchen Co Ut is my go-to spot for Vietnamese food in Chinatown. The restaurant is clean and pretty spacious. The staff speaks English + Vietnamese and the menu is huge so there's something for everyone. We were fans of the banh khot (so crispy on the outside but still soft in the middle), the bo ne (which we wanted to order another one but they sold out), the crispy spring rolls, and all the noodle soups we ate were tasty. I also loved the fresh sugarcane juice that reminded me of my childhood and the strong Vietnamese coffee. We started with the Bi Cuon (pork summer roll) then proceeded with the Bo Kho (beef stew), Com Tam Suon Bi Cha (pork chop over broken rice), and Bo Ne (sizzle steak with sunny side egg and pate). I've been here several times and I always leave satisfied. It's a go-to Viet spot for me in the Chinatown area! It comes to the table sizzling hot. It's a big piece of steak and a big chunk of pate, together with the sunny side egg and onions and the special sauce... it's just chef's kiss! When you assemble everything in the baguette, it's just so delicious! I also tried #21. Hu Tieu Nam Vang. "Southern Vietnam specialty noodle soup, ground pork, sliced pork, shrimp, quail egg, pig heart muscle and liver, topped with scallion and chive." It was recommended to have the broth on the side and that's what we did. I thought we had to dip the noodles into the broth, but the staff said to eat the noodles and just drink the broth on the side. But the noodles were so dry, we ended up dumping the broth into the noodle bowl. Not my favorite dish, but if you order it, I recommend having the broth in with the noodles. Although this dish was a miss for me, I still very much enjoy their other dishes. They also have a sister Bánh Mì store called Bánh Mì Cô Út that I order frequently from! I was really excited to try this Vietnamese place, but the whole experience was just meh. For my Pho, I chose the Hu Tieu Nam Vang (#21) with ground pork, sliced pork, shrimp, quail egg, pig heart and liver, topped with scallion and chive. This is a dry noodle dish with soup on the side, where you are supposed to eat your noodles first and enjoy the soup after, as our waitress explained to me and as it is also recommended on the menu. The problem is, the dry noodles were all clumped together, making it difficult to eat them. Also, the pig heart was not what I expected, being very fibrous and almost indistinguishable in taste from the liver. The soup on the side ended up being my favorite part of this dish. Maybe I should have picked a safe, classic dish like the Pho Bo Co Ut (#11). We also got the BBQ prawn skewers. They came drenched in an absolutely delicious sauce, but they were very difficult to eat as one is supposed to such the sauce from the shell, then take the shell off and eat the meat. But we found it impossible to take the prawns off the skewer, so I actually ended up eating them with shell and all. This also made it very difficult to dip them in the sauce on the side.
