Finally got to check out the new Location of Koala Moa Huli chicken. Originally they were located on Nimitz across from Lowe's. For all those who remember it use to be a Kentucky fried chicken . My family and I decided for dinner Huli Huli chicken. I haven't eaten a good Huli Huli chicken for months could be at least a year. I'm sorry I need to be more accurate on name of Huli Huli chicken. Now you can't call it Huli Huli chicken that's why most places call it Rotisserie chicken . Just because someone in the mainland copyright that name so now everyone don't use Huli Huli anymore. Can you believe that us locals grew up calling Rotisserie chicken Huli Huli chicken it's jus because. Huli Huli is to turn or flip in Hawaiian. Anyway a little education on Chicken ha ha . I also ordered their Lemon grass ribs it was nice and flavorful and come off the bone ribs Wow! It was good even though I not a fan of Lemon Grass seasoning I know the Thai's like to use that in their cooking . I am such a fan of this HuliHuli chicken shop. I watched in horror as they bulldozed the restaurant on Nimitz and have waited with much anticipation for information of a new location to be released. In the interim our family has hit every school's fundraisers, driven to North Shore and stopped on the side of the road in Pearl City to be pleased but not ecstatic with the results. Well, they're back! After reading Rod U's recent review for Koala Moa, I told the family I'd pick up chicken on my way home for my appointment in Kakaako. Cheers from everyone. So I'm there at 12:05 PM thinking I'd be right in the middle of lunch rush....people are walking out with nothing. What up? Sorry we're sold out, oh nooo! The counter lady looked sheepish and said there are more but 20 minutes until they're done. Whew, I'm not going home empty handed. Ordered five whole chickens. I normally get three but I knew the "boys" would devour extras. Asked her if I could pay and when they were done they could let me know. 24 minutes later a young man brought them out and put them in my car. Front of store parking, yay. Same Huli chicken we all came to know. New location in the city Square shopping center as the old location on Nimitz closed and was broken down for something else. Anyways on to the food. Got a whole chicken and some ribs. Chicken the same good flavor Huli huli is known to have. Flavorful, tender, juicy. Can't go wrong and don't think I ever had a bad huli chicken before. Decided to try the ribs as well. Was 17.99/lb so decided ok let's try it 1st and get 1/2 lb. Half pound only got us 3 pieces of ribs lol but they were meaty thick. Could be a little more tender but was flavorful could taste the smokiness and light lemongrass. For the price may have to pass on the ribs and double down on the chicken next go around. I like Koala Moa because the huli huli taste never changed. I can't speak for anything else since I only buy their chicken and skip the sides since the true Asian in me knows I can cook rice at home. If you sign up for their rewards program, they sometimes email discount coupons. Koala Moa is conveniently located in City Square and service is always quick. The only thing I wish is that chopping the chicken would be an option (since it's pretty expensive for a whole chicken now) but unfortunately it's still not. read more

Experienced the worst customer service EVER from this place. To top it off, it was coming from the owner herself. Came here w/family visiting from Cali and England and from the get go, they already gave us attitude. Ordered food from the counter and decided to eat it there. There were 15 of us and there weren't enough chairs. There were extra chairs stacked on the side and so my cousin tried to take one but was stopped by the owner when she snapped at him for taking it. Get the Jumbo Plate and have them cut it up for you for a minimal charge and it comes with Rice and a Side and you have the perfect meal for two. We stopped by the Waimanalo food truck ono for huli huli chicken. This is the jumbo plate which consists of one tiny spatchcocked chicken with 2 scoops of rice and corn for $22 dollars. It was still hot (from the cooler). It was nice and crispy too. The thing is I think because it was so tiny the whole chicken got way overcooked that the thighs were DRY. So can you imagine the breast!!! Hence the 1 star. Will not go back ever. I'm still wanting to try their City Square shopping center. read more

Butterflied open, the texture is all white meat. I wish the chicken was more succulent, but we'll settle for some smoke and that familiar shoyu-sugar sauce to suck off our fingers. This place used be on the corner of Nimitz near the Zippy's but now it's in the Dillingham City Square. Always wanted to try their huli huli chicken so we made a trip here. Had the combo with the quarter chicken and ribs. You get to choose 4 sides (corn, brown or white rice, mac salad, tossed salad. Love huli huli chicken and theirs were juicy, smokey and flavorful without being overly salty. The ribs were good too- soft, smokey and tender. We got the corn (canned?), brown rice and the mac salad x 2. The mac salad was a bit bland but we kicked it up with a pinch of chili powder. Oh yum!! The server was really nice and friendly. My husband and I haven't had huli huli chicken in a long time and decide to each get a 1/2 chicken plate. The chicken was super flat and mostly bones. We were both lucky if we even got a few ounces of meat each. Also the season on the chicken was not even throughout, so with the few bites we each had they all tasted different. At 5:10 I started calling every 5 minutes for about 50 minutes to place an order. Online ordering didn't have whole chicken options. My friend was going to pick it up. He ended up going anyway. Went because my cousins were craving it so I picked up for everyone's dinner. The location is in Kalihi. No seating area. Once you walk in, you can smell the yummy aroma of their chicken. Who doesn't love their chicken? I ordered 5 chickens. 2 were for my cousins and 2 were for my family and one for my sister and her husband. Sounds like a lot but you can get lost in eating the chicken because it's that good. They do sell plate lunches and sides too. I would go back to try the sides. They looked yummy. I was in and out. This is hands down the best huli huli chicken I've had in a long time. The flavors was there with just the tight amount of salty goodness along with the hint of spice. The meat was so moist and tender I actually ate all of the breast meat.( I usually eat a little bit of it and then dunk it in ketchup or sauce to moisten it) but this was not the case!. If you hungry the half plate is more then enough and at a reasonable price for what you get. They close in Monday to my sadness. I grew up on Koala Moa Huli Huli chicken. My Dad always bought 2 when he knew someone had a fundraiser or even just driving by on the weekends and see the smoke from the huge grills. I still remember it being so moist, flavorful, plumpy and glistening with its juices..plus the plastic bag they kept it in to stay warm and juicy. After going to the market a few steps away from Koala Moa I figure I'd go pick up a chicken. The cashier didn't seem to be happy a customer came through the doors. I ordered a whole chicken and made my way back to the car. As I was walking I had to feel the bag to make sure it was a whole rather than just a half because it was so light. When I got home my ecstatic energy and appetite went out the window. The skin was wrinkly and honestly look liked it was just reheated in the microwave..you know that look your Costco rotisserie looks like after being two days in the fridge? It looked like that. And each time I go there I never see any smoke..are they grilling indoors? I was so disappointed. It was dry, the drumstick meat didn't fall off the bone.. meat was kinda hard..literally like left over chicken from 2 nights ago. The quality went down big time. They were the best. WERE. I get it, it's what goes in to preparing/cooking the chicken that makes it special - yet, for the price and how much we got, it was a bit disappointing. Good, solid Kiawe charcoal-cooked chicken. This chicken reminds me of long time ago when the company that started this style and taste used to bring the big grills with all the charcoal and chicken. Then all the volunteers that were participating in whatever money-making drive was going on, would rotate the grills at the command of the employee that was in charge of supervising the entire operation. The taste of Koala Moa's chicken is similar (good smoke with a hint of Asian). My favorite is the dark meat and theirs is very moist and flavorful. Soo disappointed! I loved Koala Moa when they were on Nimitz and so sad when they closed that store. When I recently found that they were open at the Dillingham location, I went the next day. I ordered the half chicken and they were out of the purple daikon so got the yellow. It was an excruciating drive home with that yummy familiar smell of grilled huli huli chicken. I wanted to take a bite while driving : ) I was so disappointed when I finally took a bite. Did they change something?! It smelled the same, but it looked and tasted like Don Quixote roast chicken. It didn't have the thin crispy skin and it had that same delicious smoky smell but didn't taste like it. The skin was still fatty, the fat wasn't rendered out.
