Decent Korean food for the area. We used to frequent San Soo Gab San in Morton Grove when we used to live in Des Plaines and I prefer that restaurant. Service was very speedy, we got our food within 6-7 minutes of ordering, although it was a slow Wednesday around 2pm. I ordered combo 2, with tofu soup and kalbi. Both were tasty, but the kalbi was very chewy and fatty. Tofu soup had lots of squid and one shrimp with head, no clams or mussels. Husband ordered the dolsot bulgoggi bibimbap and it came without an egg, sad. 6 banchans which is about 6-8 less than SSGB, but they were all tasty and fresh, with the exception of the hair in the potato banchan. And as expected, service was minimal and did not extend beyond taking our order and bringing out our food. No drink refill, no checking in, not even asking if we wanted our check. I went in on a Tuesday prime lunch hour and was surprised as how busy it was from the small store front. Seem like the business is run by a family. Well the food was delicious. I ordered the La Galbi lunch special and it came with an assortment of appetizers! I thought that the portioning was plentiful. The beef had a very marinate and tender. When I came here for dinner, there were only three other parties here which means seating was super fast. I ordered one of the clay pot entrees and it was done really well, comparable to what you would get in Koreatown in LA. I would say the serving size was medium, not tiny like a French restaurant but not outrageously large like Cheesecake Factory. These days restaurant portions have gotten so large that we expect two dinners from one order, and that's not the case here- one dish is one dinner. Galbi. Bulgogi. Chadol. That's all you need! Also included are the unlimited ban chan dishes (shout out to the odeng, potatoes, and onions!). To add a cherry on top, the ladies working here are both attentive and sweet. The only downside is that the place is a tad small so if you have a fairly sized group, be sure to make a reservation or be prepared to watch others enjoy their meal for awhile. There are few things more simple than good Korean food. I travel 4 to 5 days a week and will often go out of my way to find a Korean restaurant wherever my travels take me. When I was in Lincolnshire a few weeks ago, my colleagues brought me to Kogii Kogii and I have now been back 3 times! If you are dining as a group, give the beef or pork BBQ combo a shot. I have had both and loved every bite. The small platter is more than enough for 2 or even 3 people, especially when you factor in the soup, rice, banchan and the seafood pancake! I always finish a Korean meal with Naengmyeon (Cold Noodle Soup) when it is available (some places serve it seasonally, as is traditional) and the version Kogii Kogii serves up is just about perfect. The staff is friendly, attentive, and willing to answer any questions. They seem to magically appear out of thin air whenever the banchan need to be replaced or your grill needs to be attended to. After a long flight from the coast, we were on the hunt for KBBQ and were thrilled to find this family-run option in the suburbs. For $20, Kogii Kogii was a great value. By the time we arrived, they were out of banchan refills, but we still appreciated what assortment they did have. In spite of the language barrier, the hostess and waitresses were very accommodating and more than willing to split up our checks at the end of the evening. We were a party of 8 and the restaurant probably hadn't been expecting such a large crowd so late on a Wednesday evening. The waitress even told us not to waste our time with the brisket, so we went straight for the bulgogi, pork belly, marinated chicken and ribeye, instead. All the meats were well-seasoned and fresh. What took us most by surprise was the tenderness of the chicken. We usually avoid the chicken at KBBQ places since it takes so long to be prepared, but it was worth it. A frustrating experience to the say the least. Maybe it is because my wife is Korean and we live in LA with the country's largest volume of Korean restaurants? Maybe it is because the service at this place was just horrendous. I will say that they were friendly, thus the extra star. We were a large group of 12. We had reservations and were one of three tables in the joint. I don't know where to begin... We ordered AYCE since that is what you do here. Out came meat for fifty people. We're big eaters, but most of it sat warming on the neighboring tabletop. Would have been nice if it came out little by little and in slightly smaller portions, but no... everything at once. At the end of our hour-long meal, three of the plates went "back to the kitchen" untouched by us. Would have loved to try more short ribs. We wanted some vegetables to BBQ, but they said not to order that (???) so we stuck with the banchan as our non-meat. The banchan was pretty good. We had short ribs, bulgolgi, pork belly and another cow product. The pork belly was so tough that most couldn't eat it. And this was not because of our cooking skills. After the food was cooking for fifteen minutes, I had to request if we could order drinks. This was an amazingly difficult process for some reason. They also lacked any type of seafood to BBQ, so my dreams of squid were crushed. It was literally like someone came in to rob the place and had the real employees tied up in the back while they faked service until we left so they could make off with the money in the safe. So I've been venturing out to the suburbs more and I've been oh so trying to find all the best suburbia eats. I was craving Korean and the closest thing to where I was at Kogii Kogii. However you want to spell it, gogi or in this case Kogii is the korean translation to meat. Now I am Korean so I am familiar with Korean food. I also want to support my local Koreans. But my goodness, this place was a lot to be desired for. I came here for lunch. I was looking for good lunch special options and this place seemed like it was the right choice for me (always craving Korean food). I was eating by myself so when I asked just 1, they guided me to like the little children's room where it was SO COLD and only 1 other person who was eating by myself was eating. Not only was it really cold, but really dark and lonely. I felt like I committed a terrible sin and I was being punished by them making me seat in the corner with all the other bad children. Anyways as I sat looking at the menu and knowing what to order I already had a feeling they would forget me as the main area was busy and this random corner where there is NO WAY they can see the customers ask for anything and what do you know, they totally forgot about me until I had to use my chopsticks to bang the table to make some sort of sound to get attention. After I did this, a very nice young gal smiling ran over to take my order. I ordered the Combo A. Which is buckwheat noodles (naengmyun), regular or spicy (I got the spicy version ) in Korean called bibimnaengmyung and you get LA Galbi. It came out with a lot of red which I like so I was expecting spicy. When I took my first bite, it was quite possibly the worst naengmyun I ever had in my life. For some odd reason it tasted like sprite and other weird stuff. It was AWFUL. No joke the worst I ever had. It pains me because I'm Korean and I want to support my fellow Koreans with kind and amazing reviews but I have to be honest, the naengmyun was awful. I was facetiming with my girlfriend and she saw the look on my face when I took a bite. It was that bad. The LA Galbi was fine. But normally I would expect to get 3 pieces of LA galbi, which sums up to be 9 bone pieces of meat. In this case I got 5 bone pieces of meat, but if you really want to count it was more probably more 3.5 as the meat to bone ratio was AWFUL. One bone had cartilage but no meat and that counted as a bone unfortunately The side dishes are good but they give you 6 of them. So again if you are giving very minimal side dishes they better be good, at least half of them and in this case it was which is basically the only reason I'm not giving this place 1 star. So to summarize: The naengmyun (buckwheat noodles) was the worst I ever had. The LA Galbi was fine, but you are barely getting any meat for what you pay (The combo A is $16 and dinner is $22). The service, well they totally forgot about me and where they seated me, it's impossible to get anyone's attention unless you scream out or bang your chopsticks on the table like I did. It's $20 per adult, our kids are adult size so it was full prize for two of them. Our youngest is 4 so she was free. They offer spicy bean paste soup and rice if you ask for it. Additional rice is $1 charge. They have written out direction and instructions that is' ayce for 2 hours and wasted food will be charged to your bill. It's really good though I mean we should be able to eat within 2 hours right? They provide you with a lot of meat and side dishes and they fill your water pitcher that is very excellent service. The cooking grill is nice and I feel like it's the real deal and I love the dinner so did our friends and family. This is the first All-You-Can-Eat Korean BBQ that I found in Chicago land. It's not as good as those in LA but since it's the only one so far, I don't have much choices. The service is as good as any Korean BBQ. It's funny that that they charge extra $1 for extra bowl rice and miso soup. I would allow customers to eat as many rice as possible so they would order less meat. There were 4 of us and we ended up with 1-Bulkogi, 2-Ribeye steaks, 1-Ju Mul Luk, 2-Sam Kyup Sal. I am so so happy they've changed things up around here. First, their side dishes are back to AYCE which already was a plus. Maybe we came on a day when it wasn't busy (also they just opened up dine-in post-quarantine so people are probably hesitant on coming in which I don't mind :P) but the service was amazing. However, what is NOT okay is that she hung up on me after ONE frustrated attempt at trying to understand me. I called again, she hung up again. After returning from a trip to Asia, I was looking for a good Japanese BBQ place. There are none in the burbs (Gyu Kaku has a few locations in the city), so we decided to try Kogii Kogii because it was close by. Huge mistake on our part. While the service was good and the waitstaff was helpful and nice, the food was just not good. We went at a time between lunch and dinner, so there was maybe only one other table there. They gave us a table that used a portable burner instead of the ones inside the tables. The meats did not seem very fresh and was a greyish-brown, not really red and it wasn't because of the sauce (we've had Korean BBQ many times elsewhere). It also took awhile to cook anything because of the burner. And afterwards, my party and I had the worst stomach aches. (If you've seen the wedding dress scene in Bridesmaids, you'll know what I'm referring to.) Despite the good price and location, we will not be returning. Came here twice for AYCE kbbq. Price ($19.99) was definitely reasonable for all the meat you get which includes.. 1. Chadolbegi (hit or miss, sometimes it's too thin) 2. LA galbi (thin, but pretty good) 3. Bulgogi (best) 4. Samgyupsal (pretty good, but not ProSamgyupsal's level) 5. Marinated chicken (could skip) Plus the side dishes and rice and dwengjang soup. This place could be better if they hired either more servers, or if they trained their servers to be more attentive. It wasn't until 30 minutes in that we finally got the water we've been asking for, or the rice and soup that's supposed to come with it, or the extra dish of lettuce. I always feel somewhat ignored whenever I go to kbbq places... and even though I know that's the norm, it doesn't feel great to have your first time kbbq trying friends constantly asking you if the service is always this bad at korean restaurants. They also need to get bigger grilling plates, and should frequently check to see if your plate needs to be changed after each meat. Overall, would come again if I really didn't want to go to glenview or niles. Or, if I wasn't bringing non-Korean friends. But you leave feeling full with some protein in your belly! :) read more
