I stop in next door for a beer and the awesome staff will usually bring it over to you if not too busy ! Last time I had the beef teriyaki and pork katsu.. wish I posted a picture but we ate it so fast it was so yummy! The teriyaki sauce is also perfect and you can substitute macaroni salad for rice which is super nice if you having a high fat day ( so worth it ) I will order here now whenever I am having a cheat day it's always busy and staff friendly ! A humble diner-like feel. Really friendly staff - although, one guy, who was working the front, completely ignored us and walked off. Seemed like he had the attitude that showing people to a table was not his job at the moment. Off-putting, but we quickly got over it. We both ordered the Katsu Fried Rice Loco - the chicken, gravy and rice all worked well together and were delicious. We probably could have shared, but I wanted my own! The place is kept extreme clean and with COVID, it is much appreciated the amount of care they take to making sure each table and seating area is sanitized. Onto the important part...the food! I've been here a few times now and have only ever had one thing...The Loco Moco. There are many different meat toppings to choose from and I've tried different ones (other than spam, not my thing). I have to say my favorite is either the Katsu Chicken or the traditional Hamburger Patty. The portion is very generous and while there is a large helping of gravy, I always ask for a single serving side of it additionally, cause I like my rice smothered! TL;DR: Terrible ingredients. Flavorless and overcooked food. Would not return. Came here for breakfast. Ordered Loco Moco, Hawaiian French Toast, and Spam Musubi. Loco Moco: Ordered with an over hard egg, they brought me over easy. Not a big deal, but annoying. Rice was overcooked and mushy. Beef patty was obviously a pre-formed frozen patty, and tasted like it. No seasoning on the beef patty whatsoever. Gravy tasted like pre-packaged McCormick. Incredibly disappointing dish overall. I've had Loco Moco many times, and this is the worst I've had. Hawaiian French Toast: The bread wasn't really allowed to soak in any of the french toast mixture, so it was incredibly dry. Totally unremarkable. Spam Musubi: The spam was fried nicely, but the rice was again that same overcooked and mushy rice that came with the loco moco. Not a great textural experience. I wanted to try the Kalua Pork and a few other items, but after this first experience, I wouldn't have anything else off the Kona Kitchen menu. Have to say, was extremely disappointed in the service. Was seated almost immediately, had plenty of staff and was 70-80% full, took about 5-7 mins to be seated and place order to eat and asked for a beer, and also a takeout order for wife to bring home. Waiting and waiting, 20 mins, 30 mins, no beer served while I waited for food and no one bothered to check that I was ok, and let me know food was coming. I know that this is a small business owner but you have to do better than that. Even saw some of the staff taking pictures with customers, pretty terrible. So they lost out on about $60 of food, and a long term customer. I'll never go back to this place. read more

It's funny that I frequent Kona Kitchen for weekend brunch, but I typically order lunch plates instead of your typical breakfast fare. The plate lunch is a great value because they are really generous with their portions! There are times where I save half my meal to eat later! I'm definitely a fan of the North Shore - pork katsu, rice, egg roll and mac salad! This place does get busy and service can suffer a little bit because of that. I have been to Kona Kitchen a few times, but my most recent visit was on Easter Sunday. I was actually planning on going to another restaurant, but found out that they were closed as I drove by. Since Kona Kitchen was nearby, I called them and found out they were open til 3pm that day. When I got there, I was happy to find out that they had a $15 buffet special for Easter. I've tried a few dishes from this place including their hamburger steak and korean chicken, but coming for the buffet was definitely my favorite experience here. They had a multitude of options including omelets, french toast, pancakes, korean chicken, garlic pork, kalua pork, friend rice haupia, fruits and many more! After looking at their menu, I found out that they have this buffet option on Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day. This restaurant seems to be a good place for those who are coming with a big group. When I came here for the first time a few years ago, they were able to accommodate a group of about 10 of us. For Easter, there was a group of at least 15 people that were all able to sit together. Another great thing is free parking. There is a parking lot that wraps around the side and back of the restaurant. I also think that the prices of their dishes are very fair. When I order a single entree, I usually have some leftover to take home. For those people who are from Hawaii and are huge fans of Zippy's korean chicken, do not expect the korean chicken here to be the same! The korean chicken at Kona Kitchen is good, but I think you will be let down if you are expecting it to be like Zippys. I lived in hawaii for 5 years and miss the lunch plates now that I live back on the mainland! We tried the chicken katsu Loco moco, the regular Loco moco, and the kanak attack. The chicken katsu Loco moco was soooooooo good, crispy and delish! The regular Loco moco was okay because the fried rice and gravy was good, however the hamburger was dry and tough. The kanak attack was really good with the mochiko chicken as the highlight for me. I will defiantly be back to try their breakfast. I only give them 4 stars because of the Loco moco and the ambianace, I think they could definitely spruce up the place with nicer tables and decor. read more

OMG the portions are huge. Just gonna start with that. My wife and I went here for dinner last Friday and I did not bring enough of an appetite. I got the Katsu Fried Rice Loco. The gravy was amazing. The Katsu was crispy and still juicy. On top of a wonderful Fried Rice. The over medium egg on top just added another layer to the dish. My wife got Mochiko Chicken with a side of the Marconi salad(must have). I really enjoyed the flavor of the chicken on this dish. She also got one piece of the Spam Musubi and it was huge. The restaurant itself is a little dated but the menu totally reads Hawaii. I ordered the fried rice with a side of portuguese sausage. I had dreams of a yummy Hawaiian breakfast. The fried rice was pretty on point but the sausage wasn't really reminiscent of Hawaiian portuguese sausage. It was also $5 for a side which seemed a little crazy when my fried rice - which was giant and definitely sharable was $10. I'll have to return to try the korean chicken for sure. I was mostly concerned that my egg would be over easy or medium. I only wanted it DONE and not runny. I didn't make a fuss over the fried rice but my food was horrible. I grew up in Hawaii and this was like coming home. Okay so when my haole friend was all like "Hey I hear there's a place with really good Hawaii plate lunch food" I was pretty fucking skeptical. A lot of the places around here that try it miss the mark, and I'm pretty tired of explaining to people that poke bowls have very little to do with poke counter poke, but whatever, I'll try anything once. I was wrong. This is like, take plate lunch, get really good ingredients, but execute it classically and well. I've had the kanak attack and I have to rave about their mochiko chicken and teri beef. The teri beef was especially notable - they use better cuts of meat but otherwise prepare it exactly as you'd expect, which makes a small but significant difference. Craving for some comfort food this morning and found this place on yelp! We came around 2pm and there are a lot of seats open. Ordered a katsu loco moco and the Hawaiian plate. Both were yum - loco moco is almost like a katsu-don minus the curry sauce. I do wish i tried the original loco moco though! The katsu has a Panko batter - juicy and crunchy! The fried rice has cha siu (bbq pork) and spam. I wish the gravy sauce is more though. I like the pork and cabbage in the Hawaiian plate but it's a bit too salty for me. Pleasantly, our food came in around 20 minutes. We had the Katsu Friend Rice Loco Moco along with the spam musubi. The spam musubi was alright - I've had better versions. Nothing too special about the musubi. The loco moco was good. Overall, it was a decent restaurant. I felt like after all the times I've been to Kona Kitchen, it was finally time to write a review. Especially since I recently just got back from a trip from Hawaii. Kona Kitchen always hits the spot for a good Hawaiian comfort meal. They have such an expansive menu of all the classic eats you would expect to find on the island...but in Seattle. My go to is always the fried rice loco moco but the mochiko chicken is also good as is the kanak attack. The portions are generous, so expect to take home some leftovers. If you saved room for dessert, they also offer cakes of paradise. I know cakes of paradise are amazing but I'm always much too full to order another bite after our meal. If you're looking for a Hawaiian restaurant to rival some of the mom and pop places on the island, you've found it here at Kona. Now I'm just waiting for them to open a location closer to us south side people. read more
