I'm always excited to try new dishes and expand my foodie horizon, and came here specifically for the Liang Zhang Pi. Did I know exactly what it was? Nope. Did I want to try it? Yup! This little place is family run, so be kind and patient if it takes a little while to get seated. Once the older gentleman came out from the kitchen he signaled us sit anywhere we liked. After brining our several steaming hot dishes to other tables he stopped by to drop off the menus, which are packed with Korean and Chinese dishes. I knew what I came for so I let the hubby pick another dish to share. He decided to get the orange chicken and upgrade to a meal where for only $4 extra you get a hot and sour soup, an eggroll and rice. It's a killer value and you should absolutely get that. As others highlighted, the food came out super fast. So how was it? -Liang Zhang Pi (5/5): I ordered the medium size but the platter that came out was HUGE. For a second I thought they made a mistake, but the bill confirmed I was only changed for a medium. The dish can be found in the salad section(?) and contains a healthy portion of clear and chewy noodles, egg, carrots, onions, cucumbers, mushrooms, shrimp, squid and pork. And once you down this goodness in their horseradish sauce and give it all a toss, your tastebuds will explode with flavor. Everything ingredient seemed to be amplified by the dressing. I would ask to go a little easier on the onions next time, but otherwise this is phenomenal! -Hot and sour soup (3/5): it was fine. Nothing to write home about. -Egg roll (3.5/5): A solid eggroll with your typical sauce. The veggies were nicely seasoned. -Fried rice (3/5): I was surprised to see how big the fried rice was for the price we paid. I liked the egg, but thought the flavor was slightly off overall. -Orange chicken (4/5): my hubby loved this dish and said it reminded him of the OC he used to get in NY. The chicken was not overcooked and tender, the batter was just right. I was a little disappointed that they forgot to bring us tea, even though it was the first thing I ordered. But because everything else was so good and the gentleman working there were hustling to accommodate the 3/4 full restaurants, I won't hold it against them. Love Koong's. The food and people make you feel so homey and comforted. I love getting takeout here. Their black bean noodles are a classic. With that, you'd have to also get the Korean sweet and sour pork. Make sure it's the "Korean" one because once I ordered the "sweet and sour pork" and instead got the one with red sauce, which is good too but not what's usually eaten with black bean noodles. The Korean one has a clear sauce, the Chinese one has a red sauce. Lastly, the owners speak both Korean and Chinese! They might be from the northern part of China (aka Jilin) where Korean is also spoken, because their liang zhang pi, which is a northern Chinese dish, is one of the best in the Bay Area. read more

Wow! Our family dropped in after a gymnastics competition for much needed protein and fat! Well the meats here were very lean and EXTREMELY TASTY! We enjoyed Koong's Beef which was exactly like Chinese Peking Beef only a bigger portion - excellent! The Garlic Eggplant was saucy , but also delicious! Oh and the Black Bean Sauce Fish Fillet was also great. What we really enjoyed was just how NOT BUSY this establishment was and how blazingly FAST the food came out! We tried a nearby shopping center Korean place and the wait list was off the hook; yes that likely meant good food. This is a nice family restaurant with a family oriented ambiance. The plates are large and the quality of their meats are really good. Most Chinese restaurants in the area have low quality meat that is chewy...yuck. The place is at the end of a strip mall next to a Supercuts. The interior is clean and the can accommodate larger groups by moving around the tables. Service is fast and friendly at least for lunch. I have had the Mongolian chicken, Kung Pou chicken, Mongolian beef, and a shrimp dish. One of the guys I work with gets a tofu and beef dish not even on the lunch menu at a lunch menu price. Not authentic at all. I ordered jjampong and spicy dried fried chicken. And when I was there, the kitchen was in BIG FIGHT! they were arguing, I can't really understand what they said as they were in Chinese. Jjampong, soup doesn't have any seafood flavor in it. Hubby and I came here for dinner on a short notice since were in town and since alot of the restaurants closed due to today being the day after Christmas, I was surprised and yet glad Koong's was open. The reason why I gave 3 stars instead of 5 was because 1) the rice was a bit dry. From my guess, it wasn't completely cooked and 2) they charged for hot tea. There has been rare moments when we were charged for hot tea at a chinese restaurant. This especially being in Milpitas, almost the next asian town next to the chinatown in SF. Other asian restaurants provide free hot tea for their customers. Friendly service tho the price is a bit steeper than what I'm used to. My justification was that this was our 25th anniversary dinner. I do have to say, their Mandarin Spareribs dish is D E L I S H. Their Mongolian beef and Kung Pao chicken was also yummy. My boyfriend recommended this place to me a few months ago but I didn't have the chance to go till today. My usual jjangmyeon place is Hong Kong Banjum Paik's but I decided to give this place a try since it's much closer to me. I ordered dry fried chicken wings and black bean noodles online through BeyondMenu. I didn't realize that I had accidentally chosen 7/8 as the pickup date till I got to Koong's but luckily my food was already prepared for pickup. The food was still hot by the time I got home, and I was surprised to see that kimchi, onions and radish were included. There were holes poked into the box holding the chicken wings so that they wouldn't become soggy. The fried chicken wings were delicious but a little bit too salty for what I usually prefer. I've seen reviews comparing these wings with San Tung's but I haven't tried San Tung's wings yet. The black bean noodles were delicious and the black bean sauce was packaged separately from the noodles. Overall pretty regular. The salt and pepper fish was probably over-battered but good flavor. The beef and string beans consisted of fresh ingredients, tender beef especially. I'm so happy I found this place! I was craving black bean noodles and decided to give this place a try instead of driving all the way to Banjum Paik. The noodles here are not as "chewy," but I actually like this more. The sauce is also more flavorful and had more meat. I would've liked a "spicy" option but this is still one of my favorite dishes. I also ordered the dry fried chicken wings and wonton in hot chili oil (meh, nothing special about this The chicken wings were pretty good! I think it's spicier than San Tung. My first Yelp review of 2021 and I decided to write about the delicious and excellent services I received from Koong's. If you're ever in Milpitas, you must stop by this Chinese-Korean hidden gem. First of all, they only do take out during the pandemic. They follow strict CDC guidelines so the front of the entrance is actually blocked off. You need to ring the bell for one of the friendly adjumma(s) to come greet you to take your order. They speak tri-lingual too: Chinese, English, and Korean. Pretty impressive! There's also a young male waiter who provides friendly and excellent customer services too! They de-sanitized all the used pens. Now let's talk about the food... listing my favorites in order: 1. Jjamppong- tasty and well-balanced mildly spicy seafood soup- generous portion of seafood 2. Dry Fried Chicken Wings- similar to the famous San Tung restaurant in SF for chicken wings- they are mildly spicy, sweet with a tangy taste- must eat while crispy 3. Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings- Just like any Chinese restaurants, Koong's make these wings juicy and extra crispy even half a day later- very impressed 4. Liang Jiang Pi- a type of Korean-salad used often as appetizers for San Dong banquets; translucent noodles mixed with pork, eggs, shrimp and vegetables over a delicious vinegar hot mustard sauce; it's similar to the mung bean noodles at Great China in Berkeley 5. Honey Walnut Shrimp- texture is very different from the usual honey walnut shrimp we eat at Chinese restaurants. The shrimps are fried almost like a donut where it's fluffy but it's crispy. The walnuts are battered in the right amount of honey so it has the right amount of sweetness. 6. Fish Puffs- I remember eating this years ago and the fish puffs are a chewy delight. 7. Spring Rolls- extra large and crispy dipped in that sweet and sour sauce. It's so fresh and good. 8. Jajamyeong- large portion but the noodles are very fresh that they stick together so you need to mix the warm black bean sauce asap Now if you are a huge K-drama fan like me, then you would know in "It's Okay to Not Be Okay", the main characters' favorite soup noodle is the famous jjamppong! My goodness, that series got me craving for so much jjamppong my husband and I drove to Milpitas from SF Area many times just for the seafood noodle soup! Honestly, everything is so worth a try here! On a side note, the noodle portions are huge! One jjamppong or a bowl of jajamyeon could be a meal for two! Prices are fair too! TANGSUYUK - KOREAN STYLE SWEET AND SOUR The year 2020 was SOUR but the year 2021 will be SWEET. There are specific Asian dishes that are my favorite. My favorite soup dish is sinigang, which is my favorite Filipino dish. My favorite noodle soup is ramen. My favorite steam dish is bai qie ji, which is Chinese white cut chicken. My favorite breaded, deep-fried item is tangsuyuk, which is Korean-style sweet and sour sauce. Growing up I was accustomed to the deep red sweet and sour sauce and the bright orange sauce for deep fried items. Something about tangsuyuk is appealing. First it is a clear-based sauce. Second the sauce isn't heavy, which is why I don't feel bloated after eating it. Pork is the meat mostly cooked in tangsuyuk. I was glad to find a restaurant that uses different types of meat for tangsuyuk. The day after New Year's I ordered prawn as a tangsuyuk item. Usually the pork is sliced thin but the prawn was plump. Despite that the prawn in the sweet sauce was delicious. This past Wednesday I ordered beef as a tangsuyuk item. Since the beef was sliced thin I did prefer it more than the prawn. One aspect I like about tangsuyuk is the the meat isn't over breaded and that is probably due to the thinly sliced meat. In addition the slightly breaded meat isn't oily and that's why I could eat tangsuyuk multiple times without feeling nauseated. Yesterday I ordered pork for tangsuyuk. Of all the meat I had in one week for tangsuyuk the pork was the best. The sweet and sour sauce goes best with pork. I'll state that tangsuyuk is better any sweet and sour items at any Chinese or Thai restaurants. If I have a craving for tangsuyuk I definitely will come back to Koong's. Maybe one of these days they'll use chicken as a tangsuyuk item. read more

I was craving SF's San Tung restaurant's famous dry fried chicken wings but did not want to drive an hour to get them. Plus you know parking and the wait can make things worse. I had Koong's bookmarked for awhile and wanted to see if their version was similar. I got to try Koong's over the weekend and ordered 3 dishes, the wontons in chili oil, the black bean and pork noodles and the dry fried chicken wings. The restaurant was busy on a Sunday afternoon but the wait for food was not too long and service was very attentive even though the staff had several large parties to deal with. All of the dishes came out in a timely order with the dry fried chicken wings coming out last. The wontons and black bean noodles were good and were simple. I would have preferred more meat in the black bean noodles but that's about it. The dry fried chicken wings finally came out and I was excited. Appearance wise, they look almost identical to San Tung's but with less of the caramel sauce. The wings were hot and juicy and had a little bit of a spicy kick. The wings definitely satisfied my cravings for San Tung's wings but the only downside, I wished there was more sauce but I think that can easily be solved by asking for more sauce next time and for sure, there will be a next time! read more

Since I was craving beef stew noodles, that is what I got and the kiddo got some pot stickers because she wasn't hungry. The lady who I think owns the place was kind enough to ask if we wanted an extra bowl to share the noodles. The service was very good as you do feel the care and attention they provide with their costumers. The tea is hot and well balanced. We enjoyed it as the weather is cold and hot tea is just what we needed. The bowl of noodles came as well as the extra bowl with laddle to use to share it. The noodles were thick and the beef is tender. The texture if the noodles are like soba noodles but a tad thinner. The soup is ok but needed more aromatics like star anise or something to make it robust. I honestly wouldn't order it next time and will prolly opt beef stew from a taiwanese resto. At first glance, would say that this place's food reminds me exactly of Koryo Jajang in Oakland except the menu here is quite diverse.
