I'm so in love with this hidden gem. I ordered the silken tofu stew with braised pork belly. It was exactly the warm and comforting meal I needed--the broth was the perfect temperature, the pork belly was cooked just right, and they were pretty generous with the portions. I absolutely demolished the food and left no crumbs, literally. I also love how they give five different types of banchan (side dishes) each time. Service was immaculate, and they really treat each of their customers like royalty. They have a delightful little outdoor seating area, in addition to their mini grocery mart selling various Korean goodies. It was a bit too chilly to sit outside when I visited, but I'm sure it would be a beautiful experience on a nicer day. I'll definitely be back to try everything else on the menu. Korean Superette is an incredibly cute, quaint mini convenience store/restaurant located in the heart of Berkeley Hills. There's ample, free street parking in a fun neighborhood. When you first walk in, you enter a narrow walkway that opens up into an adorable display of Korean snacks and staples! The walls are lined with packs of various brands of ramyun, chips, drinks (like Milkis!), and candy. One wall is lined with coolers filled with frozen mandu (dumplings), kimchi, sodas- the list goes on and on! This area opens up onto a patio/dining area. We were seated quickly for dinner and service was fab! So the menu is filled with familiar Korean classic dishes with a slight twist. Each dish we ordered was inventive, flavorful & fun! Amazing food! Great ambience! What more could you ask for? Outdoor patio area is lovely and dog friendly. This is a trendy Korean restaurant that offers traditional Korean food with a slight modern twist. We ordered the bbosam and black bean udon. Both did not disappoint. The pork was so juicy and tender, and the dipping sauce was quite a tastier variation of the traditional fermented bean paste. Will definitely be coming back. Now this is a mini-market cafe to love. It makes complete sense to sell grocery items in the same place that meals are prepared and served, especially if it's a cuisine where you're unlikely to have the ingredients readily available in your cupboard. A Korean supermarket would be too intimidating by itself and probably economically risky for the owners, but the concept of a superette I can dig. So much so that I've taken advantage of their prepared meals three times so far. It's in the former Rivoli space which explains why the dining area in the back looks so polished with the outdoor space especially bucolic and pleasant. However, the inside walls were covered with familiar Korean grocery items in a highly organized, browsable manner. In other words, you don't feel like you're eating in a Korean friend's pantry. Yeah, the messy friend who throws his dirty laundry in there when he finds out his mom is coming over with her homemade kimchi. Speaking of which, the side wall that runs almost the entire depth of the space is lined with a series of refrigerators stocked with what they've made that day to sell for takeout. What I liked is that you can make up your own banchan suite with as many or as few items as you want. Second time at Korean Superette and our experience here was just as nice as our first one! You would never guess that they have one of the cutest back patio outdoor seating area in the Bay Area. The first time we came here, we opted for outdoor seating during summer, and despite it getting chilly, we still opted for outdoors today (it's just that enjoyable)! They only had one space heater outside, but it was sufficient for the few outdoor customers today. Their indoor seating is just as cute. It's situated right in the middle of their store (merchandise and prepackaged food area). This time, I went for their Silken Tofu Stew, mild, and added seafood. My boyfriend got their Spicy Udon Noodle and added beef. We also got their monthly special to share, which was a Black Soybean Rice Cakes. Also added seafood to the mix. For drinks, I got a Roasted Burdock Tea and my partner got their Roast Corn Silk Tea. The Black Soybean Rice Cakes arrived first with complementary banchan! Their banchan included Kimchi, radish kimchi, seaweed, mushroom kimchi, and cucumbers. From the banchan, we both agreed that the mushrooms were the best! I never had shiitake kimchi before, so I thought it was unique, delicious, and the umami flavor was great. I'm also blown away by how good the rice cakes were. There's a lot of small seafood in the mix, including baby clams and baby octopus. I think there were some calamari, but because it's all covered in black soybean sauce, it's just hard to identify all the ingredients, but there was seafood in almost every bite! Plenty of veggies too. The rice cakes were perfectly chewy. And mixed that all in with the subtle sweet black soybean sauce, it was delicious! Between the two of us, we probably ate half of it because it was really filling. My tofu stew was comforting for the chilly night. I opted for mild spicy and it's really just a slight kick. Just one notch up from non-spicy. There were plenty of small seafood in my stew as well and portion size was generous. The tofu was soft, but not crumbly from mixing. As for my partner's Spicy Udon Noodle, it was good, but we thought they had better items on their menu. We will say that their bulgogi had good flavor, but the dish reminded us too much of Chow Fun. Though it's labeled as spicy, it barely had a kick. All in all, we really enjoyed our meal and would definitely stop by again. Our son suggested we try this cool place that serves Korean food AND doubles as a grocery store as well. Coming inside is a small reception area. You wait to be seated. When ready, the host/ess brings you through a small hallway where you pass by the kitchen. Smells so good. You're then seated in the dining area surrounded by Korean groceries. One side are the dry packaged noodles and cute souvenirs, and the other size is the freezer/refrigerated section. We sat closer to the refrigerated section. It was a bit chilly, but once you start eating, you warm up quickly. We ordered chicken cutlet plates, simple udon noodle soup, spicy fried tofu, and rose rice cake bowl. Entrees were promptly served and tasted delicious. Our servers were very kind and attentive to our needs. There is street parking. For those of us who knew Rivoli, it's a bit jarring to see that the formal dining of Rivoli has been decked out like a museum gift shop. To appreciate the Superette, it's necessary to blank out old memories and to view things with a clean slate. Once that's accomplished, the KS looks nice. I especially liked the back deck, which was previously off limits to diners (and used to be a haven for raccoons, who would stare in to the dining room at dinner time). I liked the whole setup, in fact. I came for lunch with two companions, one of whom insisted on eating outdoors (i.e., in the back). This would not have been my choice because it was unusually cold in Berkeley and because it had shown up without a heavy coat. But it worked out OK because of the heat lamp. Looking at the menu, I was immediately attracted to the soft tofu stews, which I knew from Bowl'd up the block. One of my two co-conspirators ordered the veggie tofu stew, which is apparently the only truly vegetarian entrée on the menu. Because of this, I opted instead for the vegetable udon bowl -- this had no floating pieces of meat but in fact was made with a non-vegetarian stock. Our third diner had a cutlet, which looked really good. I was happy with my choice and consumed all but the last few drops. The bowl was not too spicy on average, but the last few spoonfuls had a big concentration of the red chili. (The spice settles.) My lunch was filling and struck me as not overly expensive (but no bargain either). I'd definitely return. read more

The servers were very kind and polite. Food was very delicious! We got naengmyeon and rosé rice cakes. The noodles were very chewy and refreshing. I loved the asian pear in the noodles. The rice cakes were very chewy and the sauce was very flavorful along with the cheese on top. The rice cake dish comes with fish cake. The table we sat at was quite sticky. Every dish/bowl/cup I picked up would be stuck to the table. I accidentally spilled my cup of tea because the table was sticky. They also seemed to be a bit understaffed with 2 servers. This placed used to be Rivoli and when I saw that a Korean supermarket/restaurant opened up, I just knew I had to come and give this place a try. I love that this place is a Korean supermarket with lots of bon chons, ramens/udons, meat for Korean bbq, and silverware. You can dine here if you would like, they offer some outdoor seating in the back garden area and indoor seating too. The service here was good and they do recommend options if you do not know what to eat there. They are also knowledgeable about the items in the store and what they recommend for the large selection of ramen/udon. I ordered the cold noodle (buckwheat - simple nangmyeon) which is a cold beef consomme with medium spicy sauce, cucumber, pickled radish and broiled egg and if you do not want it spicy, they can make it non-spicy upon request. This dish itself was a lot for one person to eat that I feel like you will need a to-go container. I liked this dish my only thing I think was hard for me was it had too much of a pickled taste to it. My husband ordered the dupp bop (rice bowl) with bulgogi and he said it was good although nothing special about this dish compared to other rice bowls he has had. Fantastic gem of a place that functions as both restaurant, deli, and market in Albany. Love all parts of this place. Went yesterday for Jajang black bean vegetarian noodles but often stop by to pick up some side dishes, korean drinks, snacks, and packets of instant noodles or drink mixes. Great service- they give you side dishes and a carafe of water even for single diners which is great if you are thirsty. Outdoor and indoor space to eat. Cool and interesting videos playing of places in Korea that are making different dishes. This comes in very handy when dining with small children, as I often am - waiting for your food to arrive. Best restaurant (simple) naengmyun I have had in the Bay area. First of all- this dish is meant for the heat of summer. It is icy cold. No, it is NOT weird. If you order this out of season in November, it is because you are either 1.clueless or 2. addicted to it and a devoted connoisseur. I make this dish at home all summer for my kids. It is a classic, uniquely Korean refreshing dish meant for intense summers. No- it is NOT 'soba'. I repeat: NOT SOBA. Naengmyun is NEVER warm. Soba noodles are dark grey and can be served warm or cold. The naengmyun noodles are translucent, light brown, buckwheat or arrowroot flour noodles. They are meant to be slurped noisily as you reel them up into your mouth until your mouth is absolutely full- cheeks bulging, lol! The noodles are 100% more chewy than soba, also much finer and longer. Soba is Japanese. Naengmyun is KOREAN. There is no Chinese or Japanese or Vietnamese analog. It is especially specifically Korean. This is a Korean restaurant. If you try this dish for the first time, please let your server cut your noodles for you. It makes it much easier for a first-timer to eat. It comes with 5 sides of banchan- traditional pickled Korean side dishes and vinegar and Korean mustard. The mustard is much spicier than American mustard so proceed with caution. What makes this version of the dish especially wonderful and refreshing is the ice-foam broth. The ice is crushed finer than I have seen anywhere and rimmed with a toasted crushed seaweed and sesame seasoning that is fantastic. The amount of time, care, and quality that went into this dish is superb! Worth every cent. The atmosphere and vibe here is also lovely and welcoming. The patio garden is so lush and charming. I would come back again and again just for the simple naengmyun. The only unpleasant part of my entire experience was sitting next to an idiot who ordered it (he qualifies as category #1-clueless!!!) and who exclaimed to his kids every 3 minutes for half an hour that the dish was 'weird'. This is a unique little location. If I remember correctly it used to be a French restaurant but now hidden at the East end of Solano Avenue in Berkeley in Berkeley is this quaint little little Korean market/ Restaurant. If you know where the Safeway is on Solano you just go just a little bit past it going up hill and it's on your left keep an eye open for it. They are open daily 11 to 9 PM and walkin only no reservations. We didn't find any problems getting a table but we came at the right time and it is small so if you go during the rush hour it might be problematic. As you walk in you pass by the takeout station then you walk through the kitchen and there's a little dining area in the back which is surrounded with Korean food for sale everything from fresh to packaged and ready to go if you decide to take your food home with you and cook it yourself perlook at yourself. However we didn't want to cook for ourselves and so we ate out on the deck and the garden and back and there's only a couple tables out there so get there early. We decided to get the bento style bulkoki. I have to say everything was fresh and delicious. All the vegetables chibbles were fresh and brightly colored not overcooked and the meat was meet with Susan delicately and the rice was fresh. In my opinion compared to Korean food that I've had in Korea this was a little bit under seasoned for my taste so I would always ask when sitting for hot sauce or sauce sauce whatever you think you might need. We got our table outside and looked at the surrounding plants and enjoyed the fresh air. It was warm so it was a perfect day. When our food arrived the meat was tender and as I told you the vegetables to be perfect just requiring some seasoning.. I like the idea that you can go somewhere and get fresh food.. So many places overcook and overseas overseas.I would come back here again with what I know now. No. I would ask for the Swiss sauce and the hot sauce and then I would dive in. The people that worked there were very nice. The lady that served our table was extremely nice and made sure that we were taking care of. They may have been a bit short staffed when we got there. We are from out of town and wanted to have Korean food before the Kings Of Leon concert at The Greek Theatre. I found this place on yelp and I am so thankful that it was not busy and it had such a relaxing vibe on the patio. It was such a cute surprise and I love all the ramen noodle displays. The food was so good and seasoned well. We ordered bulgogi with veggies and extra sides. It was everything that I was hoping for. I was craving Korean food for an early dinner and this hot spot. The pickle sides were so thoughtfully displayed and it also came with a nice hot broth with tofu. The service was excellent and the food came out right away. There were lots of people that were filling the patio on a Sunday evening. The patio is so beautiful. The music they played was so relaxing and the volume level was just right. As many have mentioned, Korean Superette is an interesting concept that blends Korean grocery with a restaurant. We opted to sit indoors because of the weather, but the outdoor patio looked really nice as well. Plus indoors, you can sit facing the giant wall of ramen and who's going to be disappointed with that? :P We had the pork belly doshirac, the seafood soondubu, and a tteokbokki to share. We made some assumptions about the portion size, for example that the seafood soondubu would come out in a small cast iron pot, usually only a few inches in diameter, but it ended up being 3x that amount. Basically, we ordered way too much food so be sure to ask about portion sizes if you wish to avoid doing that. All of the food was delicious, though the pork belly was a bit on the dry side. The anchovy broth they used in the soondubu was out of this world delicious I recall that the food was quite spicy so don't be a show off unless you like it REALLY spicy, lol! The soondubu and tteokbokki were warm, spicy, and hearty - perfect for the cold, Fall evening. We'll definitely be going back next time we're in town! read more

Super cute mom and pop restaurant. The interior is all wood with great natural lighting and fixed lighting. With the jazz music, it's very peaceful and cozy. There's also a mini market inside. We got the bento box, braise rice cakes, udon with black soy bean sauce, tofu stew. Everything was delicious. I love jajangmyeon and this place is definitely now my top go-to for jajangmyeon. The sauce was delicious and they give you so much! Full of a variety of vegetables and I love that they used udon noodles. You also get a small side of banchan and everything was so good. The braised rice cakes were yummy. I didn't try the tofu stew or bento box but I'm sure it was good. I also tried the honey grain tea and it was impressive. I don't want to commit to a whole box yet so there is an option to buy a 2-pack from the mini Mart. The food, service, and ambiance were all 5 stars. We brought 2 dogs and enjoyed patio seating. I love that they have a $10 add on for some bulgogi when you order the cold naengmyun (buckwheat noodle soup). By the way, it's Korean mom approved. My mom and I loved it, though it was heavier on the cucumbers (also shredded vs the preferred sliced) than we typically see; it was also unusual in that I'd never seen sesame seeds being added. Regardless, the flavor was great and the only minor area for improvement might be that the noodles stayed clumpy and needed significant shaking to loosen up the strands. The doshirak was also pretty good. The banchan selection and amount seems intentionally limited and small in serving size. Not really a complaint, but if you're expecting to go to a Korean restaurant where they do free refills on banchan... I don't know if they'll do it since we didn't ask for extra! However, we paid the +$2 extra for bulgogi (we ordered the doshirak before we decided to do the bulgogi add on with the naengmyun) which was delicious! Lastly, we ordered the simple fried chicken. Tasted a lot like tangsuyuk, not really at all what I expected. Delicious nonetheless with 2 dipping sauces: spicy and soy based. Overall, the vibe inside and on the patio are nice and the service was great. As the name indicates (superette is a small super market... so... minus the super, a market), there are a selection of goods you can purchase. Some of the items are priced reasonably while a few others seemed inordinately high to me (a Korean person who grew up in the bay area going to Korean grocery stores in San Jose). Final selling points: Prices were reasonable and parking is fairly easy (and thankfully, Albany is safe so as long as you're not leaving things in your car, you should be good to go!). read more

This place has the best vegetable soondooboo chigae in Berkeley/Albany. A friend surprised me with a sweet delivery from here and the soup was hot upon delivery! The naengmyun and spicy fried tofu are also excellent. The outdoor area is beautiful, with enough sunlight and shade. The plants are lush, green, and healthy and it feels lovely to spend lunchtime on the patio with a friend. Inside at night surrounded by well-organized shelves of Korean groceries was also a fun vibe. The staff is always nice. We decided to share the spicy pork bento box. Not bad portion size and we thought the pork was really good. Just enough heat and it wasn't fatty at all. The Korean food was really yummy! My favorites were the spicy pork bowl and the cold noodles. Both had a lot of flavors and no complaints. The rice cakes were also really good. The cheese was melted the perfect amount with the sauce. I didn't really like the chicken katsu though because the amount of chicken to rice proportion was a bit off. I don't think it was worth the price because there wasn't that much chicken or vegetables. The service was average. We ran out of water and never had the water jug refilled unless we asked. The restaurant aesthetic and vibes are really cute though! Really good spot for a date, with friends, and with family. It was a really nice day so we opted to sit outside on the patio was was really cute, it felt like a little garden and had plenty of shade. I ordered an iced coffee and Naengmyeon for a hot summer day. It can be tough to find the cold noodles but whenever I see it, especially on a day like this, I make sure to order it. I have to say, I've never seen Naengmyeon look this beautiful before! There was a some froth at the top of it, which if you know me, I like anything with froth to it! The colors were beautiful and the flavor was amazing. They give you vinegar and mustard on the side if you want to add more. The iced coffee was good but my one and only complaint for this restaurant is the iced coffee was too much ice. I also tried some of the Pork Belly Bowl and the portions are very generous! I thought the flavoring was pretty good for that too. We also received some banchan and it was refreshing and delicious as well. Came here for a late lunch on a Saturday and was able to get a table with no wait. I'd heard of this place before, but didn't know what to expect as a restaurant and market in one. For one, the vibe inside is great. The dining area has a very homely feel with warm lighting. Great for casual dining and a nice night out at the same time in my opinion. You're surrounded by a wall of Korean snacks and ready to go ingredients. I ordered the Dupp-Bop with Spicy Pork Belly. The pork was tender and covered in sauce that offered a nice kick. You get a decent portion of meat surrounded by fried vegetables on top of rice. While the dish tasted really good altogether, I found myself eating just rice a little sooner than I'd hoped. Maybe it's because I went for the pork a little fast, but I try to pace myself. At the end, the rice was a little too wet as well. Overall, I recommend checking out Korean Superette. The food and vibe are both good with a well sized menu. I'll definitely try to make my way back to try more of their dishes. read more

Great place for a sit down or take out situation! They have a market of dry food like ramen and chips that are more like specialty Korean curated. They also have fridges full of food they made for you to take home and enjoy Indoor and outdoor in a cute patio seating available Their portions are pretty big so great for sharing! Really great service the entire store was so cute! They have instant ramen, tea set, plushies, bonchons all lined up against the walls, which was cute to shop around for. The food was superb, I got the Korean fried chicken and it was moderately crispy, and the tteokbokki was great as well, a medium to slight high level of spice. read more

I've been to the Korean Superette a few times, and early dinner is a great time to go when you can pick outdoor or indoor seating. Their outdoor patio is one of the nicest in Albany. Beautiful, lush, and peaceful. Today I had the fried chicken cutlet with curry sauce and it's my favorite dish I've had here. The curry is mild but has a subtle sweetness. The cutlet was crispy and stuck to the chicken well. The ban chans are delicious, surprisingly no kimchi today. Also don't hesitate to ask for more of them! Fantastic service. This place is like finding the 13 1/2th floor. You drive by, the sign says Superette, you think, well, I'll drop in some time if/when I need to pick up some Korean groceries. Psych! There's a full service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating AND mini market with packaged foods, some ready to eat, some to re-heat, some frozen, some refrigerated. Quick-cook options galore. Lovely natural wood accents in the dining area, restroom decor is creative. Spacious, air conditioned spot with a cute little outdoor seating area. My spicy ramen with pork was full of flavor and had great heat level. Mom had the soft/silky tofu with pork and we asked for it to be mild. Portion size was very filling and mom's to go container lasted her 3 days, but she did not let it go to waste. There are many restaurants to choose from in the area and I'm glad to knock this one off the list.
