Kossar's was excellent. It was busy and clearly a popular spot, but they kept things moving efficiently. They were even training a new cashier, and she handled it well, staying responsive and unfazed, which was impressive given the crowd. I had the Nova Deluxe on an everything egg bagel, and it was excellent. The bagel was soft with a perfect toast. The hand-sliced nova, scallion cream cheese, capers, red onion, tomato, and avocado all tasted fresh and well balanced. It's not really a sit-down place, but I was able to grab one of the outdoor seats and enjoy it in perfect weather. Left feeling very satisfied and will definitely be back. read more

My first time trying Kossar's after walking past a billion of times and no regrets! I ordered the Hot Pastrami Reuben, and if you want it toasted, it does take a bit more time to receive your order but it's worth the wait. The sandwich was to die for and delicious! Used to be a regular customer here. From 2014, just before the virus I moved far enough it didn't make sence to keep going. Last time, before today, i had food from here, was about 5 years ago. Had a friend who does live in the area grab me 1/2 dozen and 1lb of plain cream cheese. Assuming he got there, the latest, 7:30a. First let's talk about the price. Give or take a dollar or whatever. It came to about $30. Second they gave him DAY OLD BAGLES. And don't tell me they were just sitting for a bit. No I know the difference between a day old and one that's been sitting. Third, and this was noted the last time I went in person, and just put it as a one time thing. Friend made a side comment about the attitude of all works serving the public. Like I get it, you don't like you job. Or things about working there could be better. However that is up to the people working there to handle, and for them to not take it out on the customers. Forth, the everything bagle. Whatever EB seasoning they are using. Is an obvious downgrade, and cost cutting. If they are under new ownership, or not. I don't know. All I know is they aren't the go to spot anymore. If someone asks me today where to go, I'd only say don't go here. As today was the last time my money will be spent here. read more

Been ordering from Kossar's for over a decade. Was very disappointed in their customer service today. After purchasing over $40 worth of bagels, I ordered a peach iced tea which was un-drinkable. Asked them to add more tea since it was mostly peach juice. And told them it couldn't be consumed since they wouldn't remake the drink with more tea. They wouldn't do anything about this overpriced beverage. And the drink was for my child. read more

Stopped in at Kossar's to grab a couple bialys for my mom and picked up an extra one for myself just to try. I haven't had one in years and I've never tried Kossar's before. This was awfully thin and hard. I'm used to bialys that are thicker with a distinct flavor and texture. I'm not sure if this is their recipe or if possibly, the bialys may not have been fresh? So I've been coming here for years, most times I come to NYC and for Doughnut Plant. This place is right next door to Doughnut Plant. When I was not evaluating every bagel place I go to, I thought this place was so good, but now that I've tried so many...I found this bagel to be average. Tried the usual, an Everything and Cinnamon Raisin. The dough is light and fluffy, soft inside but not very chewy. The dough is more bread like than denseness that I like inside of a bagel. The exterior has a nice chew but was my sister who tried this with me said, it's not satisfying. Their jalapeño cream cheese was amazing! I would give that 4 stars. It was so flavorful. I do like this place though for it is a very traditional Jewish deli with other nice items like white fish and sandwiches. But I'm just rating on the bagel quality. The perfect bagel spot in the lower east side! The menu has a variety of options that makes ordering both easy and difficult! So many good choices! I went with a plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese and a peanut butter protein smoothie! We were able to sit out a table outside, which was perfect, because it wasn't too cold. Very friendly staff who are helpful and will answer any questions. We received a buzzer to let us know when our order was ready. They have a couple of locations around the city, so if you are looking for a quick yet yummy breakfast spot I recommend. read more

Conveniently located on Grand ST near Chinatown, Kossars dishes up some mighty fine bagels and coffee! The staff are friendly and as soon as they open, people come in and out to grab a cup of coffee or a bagel and you get to see them make it in front of you! The space is a little small and tight but overall, the convenience of it being close and relatively quick is what lead to me giving it a solid 4 stars (albeit I would give it 4.5 if I could) solely because the price is a bit on the higher end, but definitely worth trying! read more

I know nothing stays the same and boy! Is that true here. I used to come here years ago when I worked in the city. It was wooden floors, racks of bialys and a table that was their counter, the place was covered in flour, but you couldn't beat their bialys. They had a floured, dry exterior, slightly charred with just the right amount of chew and a flavor that brought back memories. We went into the city for the day and decided to bring back a dozen. Now, they have a shiny sheen, hard and flavorless. Sadly, this is something I can scratch from my visit list. read more

I'm sorry, but whatever stories you may have heard about the old Kossar's of the lower east side, well, that Kossar's is gone. That Kossar's was a bakery. They baked and sold bialys to bagel shops, restaurants, etc. all over the city. And not just traditional bialys but an assortment of onion breads, flats, garlic breads, and yes, even bagels. And because it was a bakery you could always stop by and get freshly baked bialys, sometimes still warm from the oven. The new kossar's has the same name, but it's not a bakery. It's just a bagel shop. And while they may bake their own bagels, so do many other neighborhood bagel shops. But because they're not a bakery, gone are the fresh baked bialys and onion flats and garlic breads. Good luck getting a fresh bialys still warm from the oven. And the bialys they have now are just not as good. read more

Ugh, disappointing. We were in the LES and wanted to try one of the top bagel places (strictly for just a bagel, not a bagel sandwich or lox or cream cheese). This place came up as having good bagels. I'm not sure if I got a bad bagel...but it was so extremely boring. Tasted like the type of bagel you get an airport. I asked for it toasted and it was maybe toasted for 3 seconds. It was a Wednesday morning and not a lot of people in there, so...I don't get it. Feeling massively let down by Kossar's as the onion bialy I ordered ($1.75) was hard, stale, and extremely difficult to chew. The oniony center was sweet and soft, but everything else felt like I was chewing 14 sheets of cardboard stacked on top of one another. Their bagels weren't that great either. My everything bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese ($6.50) was soft and doughy and the cream cheese was very light on the lox flavor. All in all, a big disappointment which I am hoping is a fluke and not an ominous warning. read more

The first time, it looked like they were about to close. The place was clean and looked decent (the only reason there are 2 stars instead of 1). So I chocked up the lack of communication to them shutting things down for the day. This time, I came in the middle of a regular Sunday (It wasn't very busy). There were only a few people seated enjoying their purchases, and they looked up a glared a bit. Sort of strange. There were 3 people behind the counter. Each of them looked me in my face. No, hello, no may I help you... Nothing. 2 older ladies came in a few minutes later and they all went towards the corner. It looked like they wanted to help the ladies but I was still standing there. I have never felt so uncomfortable. I piped up and asked excuse me, 3 times (as the older guy looked at me in my face and turned his head). The sole woman looked my way, noticeably annoyed. I asked for there any sesame bagels left a lady finally answered "No". And that was it. They don't have to worry about me coming back to this store..... Ever again. Came here on a food tour yesterday and I would definitely go back to try more things. Ordered an egg everything bagel lightly toasted with strawberry cream cheese. Zero complaints from me. The bagel was soft and delicious and perfectly toasted. The cream cheese had a very nice strawberry flavor and I love how pink it was. As it should be since it was strawberry. Haha!! And they definitely don't skimp on the amount of cream cheese. Had a good amount with every bite. The staff was very nice as well. Helped with any questions I had and they seemed happy to be there. When I approached this deli, the crowd of police officers made me a tad nervous, and while I briefly started picturing a gang war between Jewish bagel makers, upon getting closer it became clear that New York's finest just wanted to go out for breakfast. There was a little bit of indoor and outdoor seating. The spread of bagels was worthy, but perhaps the more notable feature was the range of spread options. Not only were there multiple tofu-based cream "cheeses", but they advertised another new spread made with chickpeas and lentils. I probably would have tried it if I'd seen the sign before I was walking away. My bialy was just a bit browned, and while I ordered the sesame version it had plenty of onions in the center, strongly flavorful but a test of my tolerance for cold onions. My whole wheat bagel, enjoyed later with some cashew butter, delivered a fundamentally sound flavor with just the right amount of sour, a quality bagel that I wish I could acquire outside of New York. I liked the bagel better than the bialy, despite coming for the former. read more

As a huge fan of a delicious bagel, I was so excited to try out Kossar's when I was in the city. I waited in line outside the building because everyone had been raving about it so I knew it had to be good! Once inside, I was utterly shocked at the amount of cream cheese options they had and their amazing selection of baked goods. I was overwhelmed with choices, in the best way possible, but I stuck to my good 'ol BEC. My go-to bagel order is a bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel with ketchup, hot sauce and ketchup (may sound weird but I promise you it's amazing) and it was perfection. Great amount of each ingredient and cooked perfectly. I also decided to get myself a healthy green machine smoothie which was to die for (even for a healthy smoothie!) and the service was amazing. I loved the place itself because it was a cozy NY spot with cute photos on the walls so next time I'm in the city, I'll definitely be stopping in at Kossar's! read more

When in NYC... eat bagels. Or in my case, bialys. I grew up eating bialys from a local bagel place in Florida that my NY-born parents used to take me to, so they're super nostalgic for me. Kossar's scratched that itch for me. I decided to get a breakfast sandwich on a garlic bialy. I've actually been craving one today because it was that good. I got the Kossar's Classic which is a traditional lox situation. But I decided to try it with one of their tofu cream cheeses because omg how cool. Anything to ease the lactose intolerance symptoms I'd likely be blessed with later. I got it with the chive tofu cream cheese. Killer. Really good! You could barely tell it wasn't "real" cream cheese. Just a really satisfying breakfast sandwich. Good food. Fast service. Cute little seating area out front. A little pricey, but hey, it's NYC. Came here as I was seeking old fashioned Bialy. I never see them anymore. They used to be a lighter brown in color and had a distinct flavor. Thinner. I believe they are not using an unbleached unprocessed flour which makes them more like a bagel in consistency. Disappointed about that. For the price and history of the shop, I think they could spend on the right flour. I did love my Classic on the Bialy and tried the white fish which was also good. Staff did make a mistake on the order and we caught it so always double check to make sure they understood your order. Liked the vibe and cute little spot. read more

I was attracted by the historical door front of Kossars long before I moved to NYC, yet every time I passed by it was nearly about their close time. If you prefer a bagel with great value, thick cream cheese spread and tremendous size, Kossars may not satisfy you. If you are always too stuffed after having a giant bagel with heavy spread, you will find their portion right at an optimal point. ＊Pumpernickel Bagel w/ Tofu Vegetable Cream Cheese Srsly can't believe this was my first time trying pumpernickel bagel - its taste and texture were impressive. Not sure whether all pumpernickel bagels are good, or perhaps Kossars has done a really great job. The exterior was crispy and the interior was chewy after toasted. Tofu vegetable cream cheese was light and fragrant with a variety of veggies. It featured the savory taste of fresh carrots, onions, bell peppers and scallion. Tbh I would prefer a thicker spread. Didn't get to try them until I got home, but they are some good bagels. They had a good variety of flavor is including all of your classics and they also had a pumpkin spice specialty bagel.
