I would give this place a 3.9. I think the sushi is fresh, the sashimi is good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside is clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant has a pleasant ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking is easy, there's a big lot right out front. The service was pretty good. The only reason I'm putting it on a lower ish scale is because I believe there are a lot of solid Japanese restaurants in the area. However, if you would like a quick lunch that's healthy and delicious this is the place to go. The plating was very nice.

It's about time I write reviews again. Kotobuki is a family owned Japanese restaurant located in Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. The menu has a variety (Appetizers, Salad, Combo Bowls, Rolls, Sashimi, Beer, Sake, Wine, Dessert). I'm a big fan of their Sashimi Bowl, Hamachi Kama, and Arnold Palmer. Simple, non-pretentious, & delicious food. ENJOY!

Sashimi lunch special. Includes rice, and miso soup. Added: hot tea Beautiful presentation!

This gem is tucked in the corner of a busy strip mall. I almost don't want to write a review so that I can have it all to myself but it's a wonderful place to share with others. The food is fresh and delicious, and the portions are very good. I love their lunch specials. If you want variety, the Bento box is an easy go-to. There is limited staff but they are very friendly! [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you are in a rush, I don't recommend sitting inside, esp. if it's a busy day, but perhaps order to go if in a hurry.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've only come for lunch so I can't speak to the dinner ambiance but I think taking a date or friends you wish to have nice conversation with here is a great idea.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Came here for lunch and I was not disappointed. Although the service is a little slow, as there is only one waiter, this place is worth the wait. The flavors were so delicious and fresh. I will definitely be coming back.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Clean restaurant, large free parking lot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Fresh ingredients, nothing fancy to the rolls - not too much sauce. Authentic simple menu. Friendly service. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Some outdoor seating available.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I didn't try one of the bowls, seemed like a good deal, I will try next visit.

Food was fresh! We ordered: 1) sashimi bowl 2) sashimi plate 3) fatty tuna sashimi (2 pieces) 4) soft shell crab roll The sashimi tasted fresh, rice with the seaweed mix in the bowl was nicely made. My favorite was probably the soft shell crab roll though, it was wrapped in protein paper. I'm just hoping that they can expand the menu more someday! I took my mom because she loves sashimi but there were only 3 choices of fish: salmon, tuna, yellowtail. Service was wonderful and very attentive! I think this is a family owned business, probably husband and wife handling all the operations for the restaurant. Luckily, we came on a quiet night so but I can imagine how busy and overwhelming it could get with more people between 2-3 people! Another favorite part for me was the interior design! Lots of wide open space and modern minimalistic design.

one of our fav. Places to come for lunch!! super quiet, perfect for 1:1 lunches!! family owned, our go tos are the matcha tea, mixed tempura, and usually somekind of sashimi combo. i never seen the restaurant busy, maybe because we come during odd hours?... it is occassionally closed when thr family is out of town. Do call ahead to ensure they are open. Thank you kotobuki!!... Oh also their hamachi kama is delicious!! Must get it next time!!

The caterpillar roll is great! The roll was moist, the avocado was velvety and the unagi was tasty. The dragon roll was a little dry. The salmon sushi was delicious! The wasabi was so fresh- the freshest I've ever had. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is sparkling clean! They have the CLEANEST BATHROOM ever![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I have been to the The Marine Room and Roy's bathrooms- but not even close to Kotobuki's bathroom!

    Nigiri

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Clean, quiet, and quality food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I love the udon - chewy noodles and generous portion for the size. Their nigiri is yum with a spicy wasabi kick. Glad I discovered this local spot and will definitely be frequenting more often. Wait times are variable due to one server, but well worth the wait

My friend and I picked this place randomly since the reviews looked decent. It's a very small restaurant with limited seating. There is plenty of parking in the lot. We were there right at 5pm and seated right away. Server was sweet, but very slow. Toward the end of our meal, we waited at least 20 minutes to get her attention to give us our check. Otherwise, the food was okay, very limited menu, and nothing special about the sushi rolls. Food review: Sashimi: (4/5) Simple but tasted pretty fresh. Seaweed salad: (3/5) Very hard, not that good. We could only eat half because it didn't taste fresh. Yellowtail Jalapeno sashimi: (5/5) Very delicious, the jalapeños were very spicy but otherwise fish was very fresh and overall dish had good flavor. Salmon avocado roll: (4/5) I get these everywhere I go and this one was just ok. Idk if the avocado was off or what but wasn't my favorite. Rainbow roll: (4/5) This roll was pretty good! I appreciate it was made with crab instead of shrimp because I have an allergy. Probably my favorite thing we ordered.

This restaurant is on the smaller side, and only has one server. She was really working really hard going from taking the orders, serving the food, and also bussing the tables. I got seated after a few minutes. The ambiance was relaxed with a good amount of people dining in, as well as carrying out. I ordered the sashimi bowl ($23) which came with tuna, yellowtail, and salmon over sushi rice. It also had a miso soup on the side. It was a bit of a wait before getting the food, which is understandable. My favorite sashimi of the bowl was actually the tuna. This is rarely the case because I actually usually prefer salmon and yellowtail. However, the tuna tasted so fresh and was a great cut. The yellowtail was delicious too, but I wish that the salmon was cut a little thicker. There was a lot of sushi rice at the bottom, so I had some leftover at the end of the meal. I also ordered a two piece fresh water eel nigiri ($6.50). This was amazing and was such a great ending to my meal. I would return to this restaurant in the future!

Came here for Valentine's Day and it did not disappoint us. The service was great. The service was great. She was very friendly and explained everything very well. The food was incredible. My wife and I ordered the sashimi combo and we noticed the different slices of fish were melt in your mouth fresh. There was no taste of fishiness and not one of the slices of sashimi were chewy or anything. Great quality and great prices. Looking forward to our next visit

Really good Japanese food. Their California rolls were high quality. The bowl was pretty good and I don't even like seafood that much. Their staff were very nice and the food came out pretty quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside is very nice, they even have bar seating which I like.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The chef's choice was beautiful and tasted great! I'm not an uni fan, but this Santa Barbara urchin was amazing, subtly sea salty and no odd taste that I usually get. The place doesn't get super loud even with all the tables. We also ordered dessert of a matcha basque cheesecake and 2 yuzu ice cream. If you love yuzu like me, you'll love it! Booking was easy through their website. When we arrived around 6:30, and there were still a handful of open tables so reservations may not always be necessary, but it's probably still a good idea. Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

Both sushi chefs are super personable, very skilled, and they have rad knife skills! Service from the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is diminutive and consists primarily of the sushi bar with 10 seats and an attached patio dining area. They do have a small parking lot which is appreciated! There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

My husband and I came here for dinner and really enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. The…read morerestaurant has a modern rooftop vibe in the heart of Downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, making it a great spot for date night. We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.

Came here on a Tuesday night and it was not busy at all but half the tables were unbussed, and we…read morewere sat in the corner and it felt like we were forgotten for a bit. Other couple tables around us... Now it was 8:30 and I get it, its late but I felt like the service was just not up to standards.. now as a server myself I understand the closing shifts, not having a busser on the floor but we are big spenders and I felt like a lot of the service was lacking I had to ask for water to get water, wasabi and ginger didn't come out when I asked for it.. the steps of service was off and I just wished the server took more time w us bc it would've made everything so much better. Sake order took forever.. But it's fine bc I get it, it's a Tuesday night, just maybe wouldn't fly with another person. Now the food quality really makes up for it. - For sake, I usually prefer Junmai Daiginjo. I picked the first one listed, but it ended up being a little too dry for me. Our server did mention it was their driest sake, so that's on me lol. Next time I'll definitely go with the lighter option. 7/10 -yellowtail& jalapeños, spicy tuna crispy rice - decent, solid, no complaints 8/10 -Ribeye/ Wagyu: AMAZING. Seriously, so good. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, tender -- easily one of my favorites of the night. 10/10 - tai snapper appetizer- great w the yuzu kosho- garlic crunch!! 8/10 - shoutout to the busser who knew his food! I asked about the fish and the sauce. - the NIGIRI quality was really fricking good, the toro, the tai, even the bluefin aka like wow 10/10 If it wasn't last call I would've ordered more Wanted dessert but everything was out except mochi- this is also fine bc I get it restaurants run out just shows how good this place is Overall, the food quality was absolutely there and is the reason I would come back. I just wish the service matched the quality of the food because with a little more attention, this easily could've been an amazing experience from start to finish.
