Homemade feel and deliciousness! Stopped by after a trip up to Haleakala and warmed up with a delicious crab cake Benedict and great coffee!

Hmmm. Really weirded out when I came here for lunch after my tourist friend asked me to take him there after our Haleakala hike. Weirded out because I asked for loco moco and the server said they ran out of eggs. Really? They ran out of eggs! Okay, well maybe they forgot to do their egg inventory that day/week? The food were okay, I guess. I was bothered that they ran out of eggs. What else did they ran out of? On my second visit for lunch (friend requested) I asked again for loco moco. This time they said they don't have that on the menu. I then asked for their hamburger steak and a side order of egg with it (loco moco). The server said they can't do that because they already put the eggs away. What! Really! Okay, i'm starting to worry about this place. Who runs out of eggs or puts away eggs for the day? Anyways, I ordered the hamburger steak which is on the smaller side compared to the other local restaurants and it was okay. Oh, the wait for our food also took long. If you're going to order a soda they'll give you a bottled one for about $3.75. No re-fill. This is another tourist trap. read more

Kula Bistro is consistently excellent. There is nothing fancy about the place. Just phenomenal meals and great friendly service. The specials are fantastic and the portions are very large. Nest to share dishes. Highly recommended. Just wish they would take reservations as sometimes the wait is long. read more

One word. Phenomenal. While on our honeymoon we drove an hour from our resort to eat here.

So my wife and I went zip lining with zipline tours and the guide Trey says go to Mt Haleakala and if you're hungry stop by Kula Bistro. So my wife and I did, apparently their kaluau pork eggrolls are the bomb. So we walk in, very unassuming, sort of like an old general store with nice table and chairs, and 70's artwork on the walls. It's next to a feed store for crying out loud!!! I order the eggrolls, "sorry we're out", first strike, okay so we'll get the special Coconut Shrimp, crab cakes, Shrimp scampi and the Kaluau pork panini. Now I expect good things, but when each plate came out, they were delicious works of art, and the wait staff was very friendly. Who is in that kitchen? Pork better than any luau, homemade pasta...I was left bewildered! An artist who is well on their way to either their first Michelin star or their 3rd is in that kitchen and no one would be the wiser! Get some ambiance to go with the phenomenal food people because I have a feeling the tv shows are about to come knocking!!! read more

What a find! Warning -- the food is very large. I had the caprese salad and kula pork egg roll app, thinking I was eating fairly light. Was enough to have served two as rolls were the size of blintzes and came w salad. Very, very tasty. Greens in caprese salad seemed just picked. read more

We stopped in after our drive down from Haleakala summit. Delicious food! Great service. We had four in our party and we had the Chinese Chicken Salad, Chicken Parmesan, Bolognese, and a burger--all excellent! By-the way the portions are huge! read more

Wow, after getting out of the cold/rain up on Haleakala summit to watch the sunrise, we checked this place out. We had to try their white chocolate macadamia nut pancakes (tried some coconut sauce on it - interesting and sweet!) and their loco moco (so saucy, it was delicious) but both portions were more than enough for 2 people. Doors were open so there were flies around but it was a nice breezy day. Cute little town, I would recommend to others visiting Maui. read more

We decided to stay on Maui this weekend instead of Hnl. Friends of mine always bring food down country from the wonderful bakeries and eateries upcountry. I set my gps to Kula Bistro and of course, didn't listen to the directions lady and turned on the wrong lower kula road. After being redirected, I got back on track and arrived in 5 mins at 630pm before the major crowd arrived. I can't describe the food as everything looked and tasted fabulous. Ok, I'll tell you about the special appetizer: scallops on bruschetta. Perfectly cooked. Perfectly toasted. Perfectly paired w our Chardonnay which was byob. No corkage. They provide wine glasses and open the bottle for you. I had the best opakapaka ever. My wife had the chicken Marsala which was on the sweet delicate side. The bakery will blow you away even more. We settled for the banana cream pie and kula coffee. We were smiling all the way down Haleakala with happy palates and tummies. It's worth the drive upcountry. I timed it from the airport: 20 mins; if I'd listened to the GPS lady, it would have been 15 mins. PS: If you want local food, I heard the roast pork, loco moco and fried chicken are "some ono". read more

Very generous portions. We had their bolognese and chicken parmesan. Both very good. We especially liked the parpadelle noodles. We could have easily shared one meal, and my husband can eat quiet a bit of food by himself. read more

I went to the Sunrise at Haleakala and was starving on the way down, the reviews were pretty good and there weren't many options, so I decided to head down here. The portions are HUGE. The food is okay... its very rich, and filling, but its way too much and some things are overseasoned and some are underseasoned. I was hoping for some lunch food because the lunch menu looked so much better, but no such luck! The staff was helpful and friendly, the tea was good, but we ended up wasting too much food. read more

Hadn't heard of this place till I saw something about it on yelp and decided to go. The service was very good and the food was top notch. Don't forget desert. They don't serve alcohol so you can bring your own or pick up what you want at the store across the street. read more

While on vacation we read the reviews for this restaurant and decided to try it. What a disappointment. While the staff was friendly the food was less than to be desired. We ordered the "special" which was lobster mac and cheese. Sounds good right? Not. It was like eating a bowl of oil and melted butter or more like a soup of oil and grease I should say. We had to wade our way through the oil and grease just to find the two shrimp and one piece of lobster. We were a party of four and all ordered the "special" and had four waters (no dessert). We paid $97.71. So not worth the money. read more

This is a little bit out of the way coming from Haleakala....but SO worth it. There were 10 of us. Everyone ordered something different. We've eaten here for dinner, dessert, and breakfast which are all excellent. I had the eggs Benedict today and it may be the best i've ever had. The eggs were perfectly poached, and the Hollandaise sauce is easily the best i've ever tasted. read more

My husband and I visited Kula Bistro last week after reading glowing reviews on yelp. Luciano, the owner was a former caterer to the wealthy and famous and he knows his stuff! My husband had a delicious local fish sandwich prepared cajun style that came with a Caesar salad (fabulous dressing) and I had a perfectly grilled vegetable panini also with a side of yummy Caesar salad. For dessert we shared a luscious coconut and macadamia nut chocolare torte. Daphne is the cute girl at the cash register and bakery and our waiter was sweet and knowledgeable (sorry didn't get his name). Nothing fancy inside, its all about the food! BYOB is a plus,. Would recommend Kula Bistro to anyone and plan to come back each year we visit beautiful Maui and Upcountry. read more

Did not even bother going, as their menu, read online, says "No substitutions". Translated, that means they don't want those with food allergies like me to eat there, somewhat anachronistic as most restaurants who want to remain in business these days have figured out that the number of people who eat gluten-free etc. just keeps going up. read more

We spent the past three weeks on the island of Maui and visited the Kula Bistro three times for late lunches. There is no doubt that the food is delicious, creatively prepared and beautifully served. We enjoyed the Kailua pork eggs rolls with spicy wasabi dipping sauce twice! They were so crispy and hot and loaded with shredded pork. We also shared the bolognese pasta twice. That is our favorite dish. We experimented with the coconut shrimp appetizer which was like a work of art served with beautiful purple potatoes two ways, mashed and crispy fried. Delicious! We also shared the lobster mac and cheese served with a Caesar salad, very good. Now here is the negative comment: Service is crucial to an enjoyable dining experience. The first two visits we were served by Brianna and everything was perfect. She was helpful with the menu, quick to bring sharing plates and fill our water glasses and although the restaurant was busy, she checked back with us several times to be sure the food was to our liking. Our last visit unfortunately was very uncomfortable. Our server Richard was aloof and even though the restaurant was not busy, he never came back to see if our food was acceptable. He forgot to bring an extra plate. There was another young man named Michael who was absolutely charming, set our table (even wiped the ketchup bottle and salt and pepper shakers), filled our water glasses, and talked to us about our experience. We left that last day in Maui feeling a little sad about our final meal, focusing on the awesome food and letting the poor service go. We will be back next year for sure! read more

Came here for breakfast after seeing sunrise at Haleakala. We were starving and the place opened a bit late than what was stated. I ordered breakfast side of 1 pancake and my husband ordered a frittata. The side order pancake was huge and it was delicious. The coconut syrup was amazing!! Wow!! What a find!! Driving down from Haleakala and starting searching for a place to eat. Found the Kula Bistro. Very casual atmosphere with off the chart food. I never take pictures of my food, but I took a couple. Our server, Matthew, was great and very knowledgeable about the menu and professional. They don't have a liquor license but they allow you to bring your own wine or beer with no corking fee. Can't say enough about the coconut shrimp on top of Maui purple sweet potatoes!! My table of 4 shared one which made a great appetizer. Hubby had shrimp and lobster Mac n cheese. Another hubby had the hamburger steak. They said their food was good, but my grilled local mongchong was outstanding! Unfortunately we were too full to take advantage of the selections from their pastry chef. Should have taken something home. I live in SoCal and come to Maui once a year. Usually stay in Lahina. This restaurant is worth the drive. Will definitely be going back! read more

Love this place!!! I just wish they had more than one shared bathroom

The Kula Bistro was highly recommended by a friend who has been, to Maui, several times. This charming BYOB open-air restaurant is off the beaten path, however easy to locate and most definitely worth going to, while on Maui. Their menu has items to please most palates but does have a large number of fish and seafood dishes. I had the monchung fish with a beurre blanc sauce, served with roasted vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was fresh and delicious. My husband chose the pasta bolognese which he said was one the best he'd ever had. The serving was enormous and we took home over half the dish. The restaurant has a display case with a myriad assortment of pastries and desserts, all of which looked amazing. We chose to share a coconut cream pie, which was quite good. The food was outstanding, the waitstaff very professional, attentive and friendly, the atmosphere laid back and unhurried. The prices were very reasonable particularly with quality and quantity of food served. We highly recommend the Kula Bistro for an excellent lunch or dinner! read more

Stopped in for breakfast after watching the sunrise and hiking at Haleakala... a perfect stop on the way back to our hotel! The Steak, mushroom and onion frittata and the fried eggs and fried rice were both delicious! Service was great and friendly! All pastries are made in house, but were too full so we took some chocolate chip peanut butter cookies to go :) will def return when in Maui! read more

Stopped here after a leisurely drive down from Haleakala and had the mahi Benedict. My wife and I had a lot of great food on Maui while we were there for a vacation, but this was the single greatest meal I had while there, and it was an extremely generous portion. I had penne pasta with roasted veggies and grilled chicken breast. The pasta was hot and al dente, the flavor of the sauce was nice, but the veggies and chicken were overcooked. went Thursday for lunch with my parents 3ppl. the server was a tall young man did his job well but lacked personality. my mother ordered a salad with the special fish she liked hers but felt it was rather pricey. my dad ordered honey dipped chicken. they chickens were tiny. it was no bigger than quail pieces. he intentionally was gonna order a panini but they were not willing to make his sandwich without the chili aioli because they premake there panini beforehand. i ordered the sausage onion mushrooms pizza. the crust tasted like a hot pocket which was the first problems. then there was way too much sauce and cheese for the crust to even crisp up, too bad because there crust was thin and could have been decent if it wasn't so soggy. we were disappointed with meal. maybe the chef was having a bad day. but i dont think i would drive upcountry for this place. read more
