Decided to check this place out since my parents visited this restaurant a few years ago while in port on their Alaskan cruise. I guess they just opened back up for dine-in seating (thanks to COVID) and we probably picked a "bad" day (V-day) to go because while it wasn't packed when we arrived, it was noticeable that the kitchen and sushi chef were in the weeds. The staff were trying their best to juggle dine-in guests and delivery/takeout orders but it seemed they placed a priority on takeout/delivery orders instead of the guests seated in the dining room. That being said, we didn't mind the waiting but others around us were getting impatient and the staff did their best to make good on some (comp drinks or apps). We ordered a dinner bento box (teriyaki chicken, salmon teriyaki, tempura) and their Korean version of Chirashi. As mentioned before, the sushi chef was backed up and my wife didn't get her Hae Dup Bop ($25) until well after I got my order. A good gauge for knowing if the staff was in the weeds would be the water level in your glass. I didn't get a refill the entire time and I shouldn't have to ask. But again, understandable and forgivable. Overall, good portions on the food. Taste was good. Service was okay but they were trying hard. Pricing was okay given what we ordered. Would I go again? Maybe. Would I recommend this to any friends/family? Yes, just call ahead to see how busy they are. Hoping they can hire back more staff to keep up. read more

A good sushi restaurant located in downtown Anchorage. The variety of their menu was so great as they have almost everything I can think of as far as Japanese dishes: sushi, cooked foods, ramens, hot pot, etc. During our trip in Alaska, we went there twice. First time we got there a little before they open to be the first group and we were seated there first party. Unbelievably only 10 minutes after all tables were full. I think they have around 10ish tables plus the sushi bar area. That proves this place is very legit and people are aware. The location is superb as it is a prime spot in downtown. After two trips here, we concluded that we prefer cooked foods to sushi. Nothing is wrong with their sushi but at the same time nothing is amazingly outstanding. We originally thought sushi in Alaska would be awesome with all wild fresh caught fish but not really. It has to be on their special menu I guess. The sushi items i thought they were not bad were salmon hand roll and the Naruto roll. Now let's talk about their cooked foods. My recommendation is Salmon karma, ramens, and pork katsudon. We loved all their cooked food items we got. Special thumb up went to the pork katsu. Very well fried and marinated. Yummy. Service here was friendly and foods came in a reasonable amount of time. read more

Do not bother with this place. Portions are a joke for cost (maybe a .25 ounce of chicken yakitori for $10, really?) Food is bland. Assuming what you get even looks like Sushi. As a diabetic, I got the J roll, food was dried out, almost looks like threw it in the container. For $16, I could have gotten a slab of ahi tuna Carrs and made it myself, and had leftovers for tomorrow. Wife had the caterpillar, which at least arrived intact, though it had been served on a plate I would have sent it back due to the lack of contents inside the sushi roll itself. I get more out of a caterpillar roll going to Carrs deli than this place, at half the price. Got chicken nuggets and fries for my kiddos, fries were soggy and from working in the food industry myself, looks like their oil hasn't been changed in a month. The Miso soup itself, was maybe miso, but very watered down. Fried rice was so so, which was the better portion of what we paid $95 for. Avoid this restaurant, like the plague. First time visiting Anchorage and was surprised to find this gem in town. I went the first time and had the Kimchi ramen. Kimchi was fresh, tasty and went surprisingly well with the ramen. The broth was good and noodles were good though it wasn't the best ramen I've ever had but still very good. Came back a second time and had an assortment of sushi. Their sushi was fresh and tasty and I particularly enjoyed the soft shell crab sushi roll. Great place and would definitely be back when next in town. read more

Came here after the initial place we had planned to go to closed for "personal event" for a couple of weeks. Location is good and it's close and walkable from hotels in the area. Lots of seating for lunch. Facilities are clean. Orders the Shio ramen, Katsu ramen, chicken curry and a spicy rainbow roll. The tastiest item was the sushi roll. Both ramens lacked flavor in the broth. The Shio ramen comes with one, yes, one, slice of pork. The katsu ramen only had ramen and chicken katsu, nothing else. Both ramen broths could have used some flavor. Curry tasted fine and was filling. But for the price, we expected better ramen. read more

Was craving for some udon and my fiancé suggested this place. They only have two udon options on the menu: tempura udon or nabeyaki udon. I went with the nabeyaki. It came with a side of two shrimp tempuras. In the broth, there were vegggies, fish cake an egg, shiitake mushroom and some chicken. The broth was delicious and the noodles were of the perfect consistency. We paired our meals with some large sapporos and hot sake. The meal was perfect for a cold day Anchorage. I loved how the menu had plenty of pictures. It made me want to order everything since it all looked so yummies. Even the walls had framed pictures of items from their menu. They serve a wide variety of Japanese food here which include ramen, udon, sushi, sashimi and even shabu shabu! Great service & great food. The decor in this place is different but I like it! I had amazing service from the sushi chef, he catered immediately to our every want and need. Yes, the prices are definitely more than other places in Anchorage, however, you have to remember the location. I got the Kumagoro Steak, i'm not much of a beef or steak eater but the picture looked yummy! Literally, within two minutes of ordering I had their salad with a ginger type dressing, it was sweet and yummy. The salad accompanied a miso soup that was very good (I don't even like miso much). Then came my hot sizzling Kumagoro Steak ($25.00) (hot plate) with a side of rice. The steak was on sauteed cabbage and onions (probably some other stuff). The steak was in a ginger based marinade/sauce of some sort. It was very flavorful and cooked perfectly medium rare as I asked. I would come again for the more affordable lunches. If your looking for fast and friendly service and are downtown, give this place a shot :) read more

Kumagoro has the freshest sushi on the planet! I had baked green mussels, a lobster roll, and a rainbow roll. Hands down never had any sushi better than Kumagoro. Maybe we ordered the wrong food, but the teriyaki meal was just a piece of protein on top of A LOT of cabbage. Found myself leaving hungry as our appetizer never showed. They were a bit busy but there were four employees just standing behind the sushi bar while two young ladies struggled to keep up with the rush. Delicious sushi in downtown Anchorage. We went here at around 9:45pm on a weekday; one of the few spots that were still open this late. We're so grateful they still sat us even though they were closing at 10 (we ordered and ate really fast bc we felt bad). Our host was super cute, nice, and polite. The chef made our food quick but it was still very delicious. We got the Anchorage roll and the Kenai roll. Both were very good, but the Kenai was way too spicy for me. read more

Abysmal. Chicken curry was not in the least enjoyable. The meat was bizarre. I suppose it seemed "velveted" in that it had the texture of muscle meat that had been broken down by some chemical process maybe it was sat in egg white. The sauce was flat. Growing up in Japan and being in a different country is a homesick for food. So, we finally tried a japanese restaurant that we heard it is good and a must try place. Well we are disappointed. We ordered a picked up of miso ramen, yakisoba and chicken katsu. When I opened the miso soup it was immediately smelled like a regular miso soup, put the noodles in and start eating it thinking well let's give this a try and I put some green onions from my fridge to put a little color on it. It is nothing like Miso ramen at all. First of, Miso ramen don't have ground beef/pork on it. Second of, there's only one chasu meat which I think was a pork loin instead of pork belly. Yakisoba is ok. At least they got the right noodles to use for it but the veggies on it isn't supposed to be there. Yakisoba is a very simple dish that I don't understand why restaurants over complicated it by putting beggies that is not belong to it. Chicken Katsu is not good. Very dry and can barely see the meat. I understand we are in a pandemic but with the price like that we should be able to get real japanese food taste. Kumagoro recently changed owners so I'm hoping that this review won't be too late. We've already noticed the new owners are changing things and cutting corners by diluting the (DELICIOUS) yakitori sauce the previous owners always used. I always get a yakitori appetizer with a side of rice. Sometimes I get a salmon riceball (onigiri) or a tuna roll (tekka maki). It saddened me to see that the Japanese chef who has always been there, I assumed since the beginning of time, is now gone with the owner changeover. My roommate and I have made it a New Year's tradition to come to Kumagoro for sukiyaki. They literally bring a grill out to the table and you cook a shallow pot of udon noodles and clear noodles with thinly shaved meat, mushroom, tofu, cabbage, and onions. We prefer the deluxe sukiyaki because you also get yakitori and sashimi plus tempura. My roommate likes the ramen. You can ask for extra noodles. My one complaint is that the sushi rice is not seasoned here. Hopefully the food quality stays decent. The service was always good previously too but we've only eaten there once since the new owners took over in January. read more

Was excited to try Kumamoto under new management BUT I am Not impressed. It's been so long since the last time I was here (which was also the first time) I don't remember how the inside looked. The place is clean but empty for a Sunday afternoon lunch. Not a good sign tbh. I got the shoyu ramen with extra pork and the broth is super salty, presentation was lacking and the pork is not the typical soft tender slices I'm used to. There are two large TVs showing SPORTS GAMES behind the sushi bar. Prices are typical for downtown. But I'm underwhelmed by the taste of the food and don't intend on returning anytime soon. . read more

That was a pleasant treat! Mrs. B, The Boy, G Son, & friend were downtown this Sunday morning looking for lunch. Our original destination did not open until afternoon and we were left standing on the street corner scratching our heads. Kumagoro was a block away. With no objections from the party, ventured forth. The place was decorated the way that I would expect an Asian restaurant to be decorated... But just a bit better. It had a hint of minimalistic flare with very neat and straight lines. Small sushi station is the hub of the front room. It was sporting some very appetizing displays of very fresh ingredients. We were being escorted to a table within 15 seconds of entering the establishment which was at approximately 25% capacity. We were provided with water and menus immediately. The wait staff seemed happy to be there as well as happy to have us there. The Boy ordered a couple of different varieties of sushi as well as the Spicy Rainbow Roll that offered the sushi chef a chance to strut a bit... and that he did. Mrs. B and the kids ordered the Teriaki Bento Box which proved to be a big hit. The tempura was done very well without coming off as oily or mushy. I got the Mixed Poke Bowl with Salmon, Baby Octopus, and Ahi. The crisp snap of the sliced cucumber in the Poke, demanded to be noticed.The quality of the fish seemed to be very good, I believe better than what I am accustomed to. The photo of our food that appeared on the menu turned out to be an exact representation of what we were served. I find that to be a rare occurrence but always a pleasant surprise. If you forced me to find one thing that I feel could have done been done better, it would be some basic housekeeping issues. There was a section that was partially partitioned off by a screen that was still a bit in view. The table that I could see was covered with I believe napkins and silverware that nobody was doing anything with. It gave the appearance that somebody didn't get around to finishing a task. In my book, if that's the only negative thing that I could find, that leaves me looking forward to my next visit. We got out of there feeding five people for an average of $22 a head. read more

The community in which I reside Dena'ina or "Anchorage" acutely extrapolates the stigmatized labels of Indigenous People. It is reflective, in such, in the way we are treated, particularly, in restraunts and other businesses. Having stated the vaguely ominous timeline and Racisms' roots extent, I have never experienced or noticed, lateral Racism projected by a minority owned business. Until now. Yesterday, Kumagoro Sushi, blatantly expressed White Supremacy's innate triggers and intended behaviors towards us: waiting, staff walking by multiple times, serving non-Indigenous twice, questioning our order, brought the incorrect order, not bringing utensils, not checking up on us and loudly doing so to the other customers. Me being myself. I saw an opportunity to raise the issue at hand Systematic Racism. And to help correct the wrongs and to prevent further experiences for others. Not even a sorry; just a nod and another slap in the face. Excuses: miscommunication amongst staff, they walked by numerous times, glancing at us, cleaned the clean tables next us. Questioned our order as it was just two of us, there were lots of customers, there were three others in a massive space with five staff. I pay. Another slap in the face, no bill. I having no intent to walk away. I tell them to ring up a check. I pay and leave a tip at the amount of the bill. Lateral Racism. White Supremacy's intended vision. Demean and unconsciously supplant inferiority among the "Races". In turn, cause strife. One in which I will not have occur. read more

I went during lunch hour 12pm and got the dragon roll. Not a quick place for a bite even at the sushi bar. There was about 15 people all together during lunch time. The roll wasn't tighten rolled and it kept falling apart. It tasted okay I just hate that everything was falling out and for $22 I expected it to be better "picture" quality if that makes any sense. It didn't come with any salad or soup like most sushi places which was disappointing. They charge for the green tea $1 so be aware of that since most places don't charge for tea. read more

Good sushi! Not the best I've ever had or anything, but better than average and certainly fresh tasting. The roll that's labeled "super spicy" was super good and definitely on the spicier side compared to other rolls I've had in the past (certainly doable though!). The fried rice was pretty good, as was the 9 piece sashimi. Although the sashimi looks expensive for only 9 pieces, the fish itself is much larger than on regular sushi, which I think accounts for the inflated price. read more

This is a great place downtown for japanese food. I do think it a bit odd when they add a gratuity to their food though. It's sometimes give and take for this place and myself. Many times I have come in and the sushi bar is not open and for some reason the service at that time is just par. I've had one time where it was bad enough that I drank my water while waiting, left a dollar for their trouble and took my friends out of there. If the sushi is open, it's good. I prefer traditional style of sushi, not five million fusion rolls, so this is good for me. And as I do not usually eat unagi unless I want something like dessert, the unagi at this place is a perfect finish. Be aware that you will have to eat it at the end of your meal, as your taste buds will be finished afterward. read more

My family and I was looking for a place to eat while walking around downtown for dinner. My oldest son wanted sushi so we stopped here. We ordered gyoza and yakitori for appetizers. Three was so many great choices for dinner but I ended up ordering the Korean ribs and so did my middle son. My oldest son ordered the combination curry, fried tempura and caterpillar roll. My wife ordered the combination plate with beef, chicken and tempura. The youngest of our boys is only 3 and he had the miso soup with rice. The service was what I would expect from a restaurant like this one. We was immediately seated, our order was taken in a timely manner, and the server came to check on us and kept our water filled. Dishes were cleared when we were finished each plate. I would say the the restaurant was about half full so i wouldn't be able to tell you what it is like when they are at capacity but i think that the service would be similar. All of my family enjoyed what we ate. My son was saying that the curry was not to spicy but flavor was good. I am also guessing that the rolls were good since he pretty much ate both of them. The Korean ribs that my son and i had was grilled to perfection. It had just the right amount of char and not dry. My wife found the dinner combination plate a little deceiving as she couldn't finish the whole thing. If I am ever back in Anchorage again I would eat here and possibly order something different like the yakisoba or ramen. read more
