On our way to yosemite national park, my girlfriend and I stop by small Japanese restaurant call kyoto cafe in Oakhurst. We were craving for some asian food and this place caught our attention. The decor wasn't much to rave about, but food was surprisingly pretty decent for such location. We had udon, spider roll and korean jjampong (spicy seafood with noodles). The service was pretty good as well, as the lady was eager to serve us and even offer us free dessert. We're from Los Angeles K-town, mecca for great Korean & Japanese cuisine,,, people must understand,,, not to have great expectations in remote places like this to enjoy ones palate- All in all we had a good meal and had a wonderful time at yosemite national park. Don't ever go here. We were standing around, waiting for a table for about 15 minutes, and no one came by to help us. So we sat down on some chairs, totally tired from a day's hike at Yosemite. Not the greatest place... but not the worst either. Came here with my family on Christmas night looking for a decent meal. We ordered a beef (bulgogi) plate, tempura udon, a beef teriyaki bento box, and a salmon teriyaki bento box. The soup was not hot, and the beef tasted like it was cooked days ago. The California rolls that came with the bento boxes looked like they were made by a 2 year old... I've never seen sushi rolled that poorly. The salmon teriyaki was the one good item, it tasted freshly prepared and was a decent size. To be fair, it was Christmas and it looked like only two people were working (husband & wife?). This was one of the worst dining experiences in my life. The prices we ridiculously high compared to the quality and quantity; $9.50 for a couple pieces of extremely thinly cut teriyaki chicken and $10.95 for a bowl of spicy ramen-like broth with old tasting seafood and yakisoba noodles. Theyy gave us what was obviously tap water that was microwaved for a couple minutes when we asked for hot tea. The service was horrible. We came in kind of late (around 8:20) after spending the day at Yosemite. When we asked them what time they closed, they shortly told us that will wait until we are done eating. We were deciding what to order and the owner came and told us to hurry up at least twice. I had to go to another table to get some chopsticks because they didn't bother bringing them to us. We asked for an extra bowl to share the soup and they gave us a tiny-ass miso soup bowl (all while not even making eye contact with any of us). I should of listened to you Yelpers. Very small portions. It seemed they get the ginger for free and pay an astronomical amount for the wasabi. I received a dollop the size of a dime. I actually like their sushi... but my god do they skimp on the fish. The rolls are pathetic. Good flavor, but the ratio is just so off on them. Service was quick, and the server was sweet. I would love to make this a regular spot, but it's just awkward portioning. I don't want to taste all rice and nori and would rather pay more for a hearty roll. So, if you're in the mood for sushi and don't want to drive down the mountain, this place is a safe bet... I know I'll try it again, but I sincerely hope that next time they've improved. Stopped by here heading towards yosemite, had their udon and California roll which was a bomb combination. This is a sushi place in the middle of no where so your not gonna get crazy good sushi so the other reviews are pretty harsh considering standards are different but not bad though sushi overall. The food was nothing absolutely special or anything but it certainly is not one star. The people are lovely (I don't think many of them speak fluent English, but I'm not complaining). People say that the sushi is sloppy and I can agree to am extent. One piece fell apart; otherwise it was lovely. A complaint about the chicken is that it is incredibly tough. This is not true. The chicken is not the most tender thing in the world, but it was still good. The sushi prices are a bit more pricey (the specialty rolls being about 15 dollars). The quality overall feels homemade. We are staying on oakhurst for the weekend, and were looking for some sushi. It seems this is the only one for miles around so we decided to give it a shot. Small family owned place and when we got in there were no one dinning in. Must not be too popular. The rice was a bit dry, but the sushi was decent. Got a California roll, shrimp tempura roll, and was suppose to have a tiger roll, but they messed it up and gave us a spider roll. It was still good. Also got some raw tuna, salmon, halibut and ell. My wife and I stopped here for a dinner just because we saw a big Korean sign outside the Japanese restaurant, and we had sushi, and two bento boxes, one beef teriyaki and a bulgogi one. They were great, the sushi was especially delicious, and the prices were reasonable for this remote area. The owner said it's a good thing that we got there early for dinner before it got very busy. Throw away any notions you had about Sushi or Japanese food. Whatever they are Kyoto Kafe hasn't learned them. We took our family to this restaurant and ordered various straight forward sushi items that you would think couldn't be ruined, but Kyoto found a way to do it. The California, Rainbow and other rolls looked like they'd been made by a 5 year old, rice everywhere, falling apart and tasteless. The chicken Bento Box was equally appalling with the chicken so tough and dry I had to choke it down with Kirin. This meal was supposed to come with a 4-piece California roll, but what I got was rice, a small sliver of avocado, and (I think) some seaweed paper. The finale was the spicy tuna hand roll I ordered which looked equally juvenile and the tuna was doused ( and I mean doused) with Srirancha sauce to make it spicy ( couldn't eat it). Thank God for the beer! $100 later ( for 4) we quickly departed shaking our heads and me kicking myself for such a poor choice. It was a good family restaurant, with excellent food. It was kind of a mix of Japanese, and Korean. With wide variety of food in both. Nice and tidy, excellent and polite service. We are visiting Yosemite and passed this sushi restaurant. Fan of sushi, it was a no-brainer to have a stop here. But then ... We are not familiar with the standards of sushi here in the US but in Europe this would be an outrage. On different levels it was mediocre: - the looks: sushi rolling is an art that is not mastered here (sushi should be round and rectangular, should hold together and not fall apart) - the filling: this sushi were only rice with almost no filling - the service: when they came to ask if everything was OK, we just noticed that we were a little disappointed about the adding of topping on a sushi (we eat them always pure with soy) the cook was offended an expressed his frustration at us several times. We finished our plates as soon as humanly possible, paid and left. After a long day at Yosemite, we drove down to Oakhurst where our hotel was and decided to get some food here since we were craving some Asian food. Our expectation on the quality of food wasn't too high (its a city in the middle of nowhere), especially on sushi, so we decided to get some pork cutlet (tonkatsu), a choice of food that can't really go wrong (like fried chicken). Understandably I knew that the taste can't be as good as the places in the urban cities that I usually go to, but at least they should serve you sufficient amount of food to fill you up, since their prices are as high as any other good Japanese restaurants in LA or SF or any other big cities. I paid almost 30 bucks for two orders of "pork cutlets" that gave us literally 8 tiniest slices of a whole katsu I've ever seen. The taste was just alright as I expected, and the prices are too damn high for the quality. The owner also kept telling us to pay first before we got the food. I don't even know how they took half an hour to "cook" and serve that kind of shitty rice, shitty miso soup, and very little serving of katsu. I would never come back here again. There's a Chinese place very close by which I probably should've gone to. This was on thanksgiving, so there was really no other open restaurants. TL;DR: tastes alright, the food is very overpriced for the quality as well as the quantity. They skim the shit out of u on food, the service is bad (money before getting the food? Wtf). Go to a different place if you can. We really had no other choice since this was on thanksgiving. read more
