Photos of the French Onion Soup and Black Forest Cake from fellow yelpers brought me in. I was also very delighted to see the huge selection of pastries and cakes in the cases at the front. They even have rum balls, a favorite of boyfriend's. We will have to give that a try another time. The French Onion Soup was exactly what I wanted it be. It was loaded with cheese that was heated to a nice crust on top with a couple croutons. The soup is thick almost like a gravy. It was not overly salty and the rich flavor came from the onions. The Strawberry Black Forest Cake was light and airy with rich chocolate cake and layers of mousse. It was topped with a chocolate-covered strawberry. It's one of the best cakes I've had in awhile. As for the service, I do agree with other yelpers. They seem to be nonsense. You get what you need and not too much more than that. Mama Mia!!! We landed at 830am and were STARVING. A quick search on the Yelposphere led us here. I couldn't be more happy that it did, mostly. Upon entering, beautiful displays filled to the brim with cakes, cookies and croissants- ohhhh the croissants - are ready to greet you. The restaurant is low-key, diner-style, paper placemats... we braced for disappointment. My husband had the waffles topped with real whipped cream - rich and delicious- with sweet-tart fruits to cut through. I had the quiche lorraine - very rich, with tons of cheese. I could have used a bit of arugula to cut through the richness, but I happily toughed it out. My only real complaint: that's not cappuccino. I'm certain we got a packet mix and it left me wanting. Next time, I'll skip the coffee and get it where it's done right. On leaving we picked up macaroons and croissants- everything we took out with us was great - the almond croissant: AMAZING! Okay I've been here countless times and I have no idea how I haven't reviewed it. I used to work in this area, so I would come in every so often for lunch. Pro tip: their French onion soup is the best in town. SO GOOD. Everything I've tasted on their menu is great and their pastry options with absolutely have you overwhelmed. But in a good way. Awful service. My crew and I decided to eat here for lunch, we got treated in a pretty rude way. Staff wouldn't take our orders until we had to chase them down and complain that we haven't even gotten our drinks yet. People were sat down after us, got food before us, and left before us. Waited a solid 45 minutes before someone even gave us any sort of attention. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you are an older person. I came here for lunch last week. It was my first time coming here. The shop is cute and quaint, and the pastry counter is large. I ordered the roast beef sandwich, which came with a bowl of fruit. The sandwich was pretty good and the fruit salad was larger than I expected and very sweet. My meal came out pretty quickly also. My only complaint with La Bonne Bouchee occurred after I was waiting for my waitress to bring me my check. She, who aside from the single busser, was the only server in the restaurant, came to the table saying "are you gonna get any dessert or anything else?" There are worse things that a server can say to a guest, but that rubbed me the wrong way. A better way of saying it would have been "would you like dessert?" Right after I told her "no", even though I was somewhat interested in seeing their dessert menu, I heard her ask a nearby table the same question in the same way. Not good. read more

I just happened to be in the area but knew I needed a gift for a new neighbor. Maybe a fruit tart? Thought I'd get a chore off my to-do list and stopped in. This place has an amazing selection! Besides a beautiful 7" fruit tart, I got several sweet and savory croissants for later, and a gorgeous Sacher cake for my daughter's upcoming birthday. I've eaten here so many times, I can't believe I haven't written a review until now. Hands down. The best French bakery for miles. I've been to Paris and around France -- and this is pretty spot-on. This cafe has been in Creve Coeur for decades, and is owned by an expat family. The soups, sandwiches -- and most importantly, the sweets -- are buttery, fresh, and will leave you wanting more. I've never seen La Bonne Bouchee so completely unorganized and unprepared for the Mother's Day crowd in all the years I've come here. We have a reservation and was told it "could be a 30 minute wait, hopefully not an hour." So we walked over to the bakery to look at the desserts and I was shocked at how bare they are - crazy. I feel badly for the employees. I heard they have new ownership though. Hoping they don't run it into the ground. So extremely disappointed. I stopped by to pick up a quick breakfast from La Bonne Bouchee. I did not realize that there's a cute little cafe attached to the bakery area, which has a plethora of options including a beautiful display of macarons, shiny cakes, and a whole section full of croissants. I asked the staff what their most popular pastries were, and they said the chocolate croissant, the almond croissant and the cream cheese croissant. I got one of each. The almond croissant was my daughter's favorite and had toasted sliced almonds on top, and almond paste inside. I like how all three pastries were large. The Savory croissants are about a dollar more each and j was sorely tempted to also by a bacon egg cheese one. While I was checking out, I was also eyeing the 6 types of biscotti in jars lined up on the counter. I would love to check out their dining area sometime and some savory pastries! read more

Over the last 30 years, I have been to La Bonne Bouchee many times for both breakfast, lunch and dinner or to get some bakery treats. Now the 'coffee bar is open with questionable results. First, it was either the owner or manager behind the counter and he did not have a clue as to what he was doing. He went back and forth to the kitchen to make the coffee. He was definitely out in the weeds not really knowing what was up or what he was doing. The point of breaking was when the worker in the closed for the day restaurant was using a LAWN BLOWER TO CLEAN THE FLOORS. YIKES The tables were set for the next day and here was this guy blowing all the crap off the floor into the air to land who knows where. I spoke to the manager about how wrong this was and he defended the practice and walked away. We used to eat breakfast here every couple of weeks but since the hollandaise is always broken on the eggs benedict and the omelets are brown and overcooked, we no longer spend time or money here. read more

OmG! I love this place. The breakfast was delicious. The pastries was flaky, warm and scrumptious. I had the fruity waffle with whipped cream. It was perfectly crisp on the outside and warm and chewy on the inside. The vanilla latte was also good. The delectable macaron counter! Why a rainbow of colors and flavors!!!! I was really excited to go here, having been to France in April and craving authentic French bread and patisserie. We went on a Weds late morning and it was quite full of elderly people. The inside of the restaurant was spacious, but felt somewhat outdated, almost having a Shoney's vibe. If the weather was warmer I would have sat outside - the patio looked charming and well hidden from the parking lot of the strip mall it's in. Very odd ambiance. I had a vegetable sandwich and my husband enjoyed his crocque monsieur. He raved about the French Onion Soup. I was less impressed with my side salad (just generic ice burg lettuce with a few tomatoes/carrots) and my sandwich was very dry - leaves of spinach and raw onions were falling out. Our waitress seemed rushed but she was very nice. The highlight was the bakery and they had very delicious pain au chocolat which I had for dessert. It was a difficult choice between all the options but, as most Americans think a chocolate croissant needs to be all chocolate and overpowering, I was delighted to find one more authentic and understated. My husband tried to order wine but they said they were currently negotiating a new liquor license so no alcohol. Overall I wish this place was closer to the city and slightly more updated. The bakery is absolutely fantastic but they could improve with some savory dishes like the baguette sandwiches seen in France. It seems to be doing a fantastic business as is though, and is a great spot for a light meal. read more

Stopped in for lunch with my grandma and mom, such a cute place that's very dainty and feminine. Great for a lunch with 3 ladies. Menu is definitely geared towards women- lots of soups and salad and light fish dishes. We were seated immediately on a Friday for lunch. I ordered the tilapia with vegetable du jour, rice, and a side salad. My mom had a puff pastry chicken dish with vegetable du jour and my grandma had the chicken pasta. The tilapia was breaded which I wish it would have said on the menu- nonetheless, it was delicious and so were the veggie- super fresh yellow squash, zucchini, and butternut squash. The portion was perfect and all entrees come with fresh bread and butter which was great. The bread is really fresh and flaky. My grandma had the chicken pasta and soup du jour and it was shockingly huge- just a massive pasta dish. Easily 2-3 portions and it tasted delicious. Kind of cheesy and mildly spicy- she had enough leftovers for two days. My mom loved her chicken puff pastry dish which also came with fresh veggies and a soup du jour. The food was excellent and we were super excited to have some of their world renowned desserts. We paid the check and headed down to the dessert area- i got a baba fruit tart to go, my grandma got a chocolate mousse cake to go and my mom got a very dark chocolate cake/cheesecake to go. I also had a "truffle" and it was phenomenal. The bakery is by far the best part here- so good. Will definitely be back! Years ago this was a quaint little spot for sorta-decent 'french style' food. Over the years they have gotten cheaper and cheaper with ingredients, and now lost any resemblance to anything remotely resembling authentic french. It is basically a step up from hospital food menu and stale pastries that look pretty but taste like processed crap.Today was the last straw-the quiche was inedible, they replaced table flakey brioche with prepackaged generic rolls, and cost 7 for a plain generic pb&j for my 4 year old. Stopped by La Bonne Bouchee on my way home to pick up some sweets. I was pleased to see the owner walking around greeting customers and taking orders. The workers were extremely kind and patient. Only 3 stars for me because I felt this place was more about quantity than quality. They have a world of options to choose from. I ended up getting a box of macaroons (various flavors), a slice of Nutella chocolate cake and an almond croissant. The macaroons are shipped from New York and they just don't taste gourmet. There are a ton of flavors (I tried 7 different ones), but none really blew me away. I also felt the Nutella cake slice was not fresh and left a grainy taste in my mouth. The almond croissant was absolutely wonderful so I may stick to their bakery options. Nevertheless, the place seems to be a local favorite. A customer in front of me was picking up a cake for his daughter's 16th birthday and has been getting the same cake for all 15 of her prior birthdays. I'm sure a cake to order tastes much more fresh and tasty than the pre-made options. read more

Good food but bad service. This place could use a French waiter. We were seated just before 11:30. Only one of us had been there before. she was disappointed to see the lunch menu wasn't available. We asked our server when lunch started. She said 11. We asked if we could order lunch. She said yes. Pause. We said we'd like to order lunch. She asked if we wanted lunch menus. We said yes. (of course). She came back with lunch menus and dropped them off at the corner of the table and then walked away. I passed the menus around. When she returned, one person asked what the soup of the day was. She said she didn't know and turned and left to find out (before we could ask what the quiche of the day and the available teas were). We ordered and waited and waited and waited. Eventually my friends received their French onion soup. Then I got my salad. Two of us were waiting on our pastries nearly hour after we were seated! The pastries finally came out after soups and salad and had been warmed. Mine was on the cool side by the time I had finished my salad. It wasn't even busy. There were empty tables. Our bread basket (a very crumbly crusted bread with chewy texture, served with cool butter that didn't spread well) was empty, as were our little plates, for half an hour and our table was crowded. I had to ask her to remove them. The server also preferred to pass food to us across the table from wherever she was standing than come around to us. My cherry turnover was fine. A bit too eggy for me. I sampled my friend's strawberry and cream cheese croissant and that was better. I'd go again to have that salad, but I hope I don't have the same server. During the day this place can get pretty busy so expect to wait a few minutes they can get kind of hectic. You just take your number and wait your turn. They have high-quality macaroons and other delightful pastries that you will enjoy. They also have a wide menu of café style offerings. If you are looking for authentic French baguettes, this probably isn't the place for you because they have baguettes however, they aren't exactly French style. The eclairs are not very good. The chocolate are filled with chocolate pastry cream for reasons that are not clear and it is not that good. The vanilla at least has vanilla pastry cream but the pastry itself is way too sweet and the texture is not right. Dierbergs are better. A couple of bakeries in Chicago are so much better than any in St. louis. read more

This place is always on point. I drive from south city to get the carrot cake & the strawberry Black Forest cake all the time. The croissants & macaroons are& also worth the drive. You can dine in or carry out, they have so many delicious bakery options that are always fresh & they are open til 9pm. They also sell wine & tons of other yummy novelty items. read more
