I came here with a friend to start the day before shopping around Soho. It's a relaxing environment and everything inside is sleek and clean, making it a great place to sit and relax. I'm not a huge coffee person, so I was most looking forward to trying the cardamom bun. All the pastries are served on warmed plates, which is a nice touch because it gives you the illusion of your pastry also being warm. The cardamom bun is popular for a reason, it's light, fragrant, and perfectly sweet. I got an iced chai latte as my drink and it was just okay, the chai flavor was weak and tasted watered down. I understand this place specializes in coffee, so I get why there may not be a great focus on other drinks but I still expected it to be better. The shape was good because with each bite you got a good portion of the danish, you got some carrot, and some goat cheese. The laminated dough that they use was very good. It was buttery and flaky. Cardamom bun was saturated with cardamon. Very fragrant. The dough was quite soft, but it was still too sweet for me to eat alone. Definitely something you want to pair with coffee. Came here with some friends to try out one of their cardamon buns. I remembered there being a line, but it was rather quick. We were lucky to have gotten what I believe was either the last one there or the second to last one, despite it being very early in the morning. The ambiance was relatively decent, though I don't recall if there was seating (we were in a bit of a rush so even if there was we wouldn't have been able to sit). Service was friendly and one of the workers who was making coffee helped me refill my water bottle. The bun itself had a nice blend of sweetness while still tasting like cardamon I'm unsure what their other pastries are like, but I'm glad to have tried the cardamon bun. Home to one of the best croissants that I've had in New York City, La Cabra has two locations. At the Lafeyette location, My boyfriend and I weren't the only ones who seems to have discovered this gem. They have a constant stream of customers, lining up out the door for both their coffee and their croissants. We ordered an espresso + milk and one of their Ethiopian hand brews. The espresso + milk, essentially a latte, was creamy and light with a hint of sweetness, while its counterpart, the hand brew was smooth with a hint of sourness. Both very delicious cups of coffee, and the quality is evident in the flavor. The croissant was definitely the best that I've had so far in NYC, the golden brown crust was crisp, with a delicate flakiness. When you take your first, next, and last bites, the tenderness of the crust, and the butteriness of the bread melts into your mouth leaving you salivating for more. The interior is not too airy but not too dense and the chocolate pieces buried in the pastry elevates the flavor of the croissant. The perfect amount of sweetness. The interior is chic modern minimalism; exactly what one would expect of a renowned Danish coffee shop. They were sold out of their famed Cardamom Bun (and all other pastries) at 4pm on a weekday. Since visiting Stockholm, I have been on the hunt for a good kardemummabullar. I tried Fabrique and was a bit disappointed. The quality at the Stockholm location is better. La Cabra's is definitely is better than Fabrique, in New York, but doesn't compare to the real thing. The reason I am giving La Cabra 5 stars is because of the coffee. The coffee is fantastic! My friends and I decided to meet at La Cabra for our first coffee stop this past Monday morning. Given that it was a federal holiday, the line to order drinks, baked goods and/or food was basically out the door. There's not too many tables to sit at (indoors or outdoors) given the popularity, so you really have to keep an eye out and beat the other people who are also hunting for a spot to sit down. I've had La Cabra beans in the past and enjoyed it, so I was excited to check out the cafe since there's only two US locations (both in NYC). The friends I met up with hyped up their tea selection (like the soba/buckwheat tea) and pastries when they stopped by a few days prior so we wanted to try the coffee this time around. I got a Geisha espresso (8.00) and Kenyan pour over (9.00). The geisha was light with its floral and fruity flavors, but nothing I'd want to spend that much on for a few sips again. The pour over was pretty good -- when hot, it tasted very much like water with very mild notes, but once it cooled down more (and enjoyed with pastries) I could get more of its bright and fruity notes. Again, not sure if it was worth. Maybe it's because I make pour overs at home all the time, so I'm biased about buying them at cafes for a significant higher price, haha. Now, the pastries here were good. We got a variety of pastries to share: Orange Danish (7.00), Canele (4.50), Cardamom Bun (5.00), Cinnamon Bun (5.00) and Rye Tart (8.00). My personal favorite was the rye tart because it was the most unique. It had an interesting texture (probably from the rye) where it was a mix of crispy and oatmeal like, lol. Despite its appearance, it wasn't too sweet. The cream/custard on top was light and complemented the crispy rye layer. The base/bottom of the tart was also perfectly crispy. I also enjoyed the cardamom bun over the cinnamon bun since it tasted more special and better flavor. Again, all the pastries here were all good, but the two I had mentioned stood out the most to me. Constantly crowded even on weekdays, but finding a table was easier than expected bc most of the ppl won't stay long or just grab and go. ＊ Semla Fat Tuesday is over, but my craving for semla never ends. Their semlor are exquisite and cute, sprinkled with almond chips and granulated sugar. Very photogenic, as delicate as a piece of art. The plain sweet bun was a bit dull, which made the semla lack of complexity. Yet I like their extra light vanilla whipped ganache, and the sweet-and-sour undertone from the raspberry compote. You can finish the whole bun all alone without guilt. In short, I prefer the traditional almond semla by Fabrique, but La Cabra's semla is still an amazing pastry with lovely price ($6). ＊ Seasonal Choux The choux was made of milk chocolate ganache, espresso and hazelnut praline, and fudge sauce. I love how puffy it was. For my personal liking, it would be even better if it has a stronger espresso bitterness and the milk choco is replaced by dark choco (sounds like an adult flavor). ＊ Almond Croissant I don't usually order almond croissant, but I was surprised that this was right up my alley. The croissant had a crispy cookie-like crust and buttery interior layers. The almond paste was stunningly impressive - nutty, aromatic and not oversweet. It charges higher than other bakeries ($6.5), but its supreme quality explains itself. ＊ Cardamom Bun Repurchased their cardamom bun in my second visit. Compared to the legendary cardamom bun at Fabrique, La Cabra's cardamom spice is weaker, more bready and also lightly sweetened; while Fabrique's has a crispier, more caramelized and sweet outer. Don't ask me to choose, I love them both. ＊ Hot Chocolate, Flat White w/ Oat Milk You should def try their coffee. Their baristas are professional. From the moment you step in, there's a very warm and serene atmosphere. I love being able to watch the baristas carefully make the drinks on the side. From the bakery, I tried the pain au chocolate, cardamon bun, and blackberry tart. The first two were solid pastries but nothing special. The tart on the other hand was probably my favorite. The baristas are able to bring out complex, subtle flavors in their espresso and pourover drinks that I haven't tasted elsewhere.
