This "sniffs in" at 3.75 stars... Beach Plum Kitchen was "sold the ___ out" with people and vetoed their call-in waiting list I guess because they didn't want to deal with it so we had to veto them. I remembered this place being next door. The interior shows some age and has a lot of medium oak wood. They aren't trying to be pretty but they are homey. COLD BREW COFFEE -- smooth; not bitter or sour; added a bit of 2% milk and half/half since no whole milk on the prep station; quality coffee taste NITRO COLD BREW COFFEE -- very small cup is only option (6-8 ounce max.); soft and smooth; not bitter or sour; reminds me of the one at Beach Plum Kitchen next door (not sure if they provide their coffee or not?); a very good rendition PEANUT BUTTER VEGAN COOKIE -- packaged cookie; fat cookie; not too oily and very tasty in spite of being the healthier style cookie variety ALMOND CROISSANT -- very airy; fresh enough but not that fresh; not too buttery; barely any almond paste inside (essentially non-existent); texture not firm or soft and not great; it was mediocre at best Rating = C- BLUEBERRY BAGEL w/CREAM CHEESE -- (per the wife) it has that bagel chewiness that is mandatory; good blueberry flavor; tastes fresh; she's a huge fan of blueberry bagels and this one is on the winning side STAFF here are friendly, helpful and know how to work down a line in a time of life when pretty much nobody has any patience. read more

This is a fantastic store for coffee and tea lovers. Doug (owner, manager and all around great guy) knows his stuff - and he and his staff do a wonderful job helping you select and try different coffees and flavors. Not a big-box store, but a one-of-a-kind store with the kind of personal attention that keeps you coming back. If you want cheap coffee that tastes pretty good, heck, go to Costco and live it up. Rating: 55/100 pts Fairly decent atmosphere inside, and super comfy if you are lucky enough to land one of the few pieces of lounge furniture--otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with a standard Starbucks-esque table inside or outdoors. The staff is friendly and cheerful, and will happily give you recommendations on what to order. I drove down to Carlsbad for a late evening rendezvous (with a cousin; let's not too imaginative), and with not much else open past 10, decided on this place. Given the time, I forewent with straight-up coffee, and instead we both decided to order from the seasonal autumn menu: I got a pumpkin spice latte, my cousin some maple-flavored thing. We also shared a piece of chai-spiced cake, a recommendation from the jolly gent behind the counter. Both of the drinks were just ok. Not too deep with flavor, and overly reliant on sugar. (The maple drink particularly so.) The cake was not memorable: consistency neither moist nor crisp, and overall kinda blah for being house made. I completely finished it, but regretted doing so afterwards. I'd hate to try their NON-recommended items. As far as "late night" (11pm) cafe options go in the city of Carlsbad, La Costa very well may be one of the better choices, but I'd still consider it very average. The huge bags of coffee beans sprawled out over the floor made me almost regret not trying their coffee, so I guess that'll be something to do next time I'm in this town. read more

They are constantly roasting and grinding coffee in this huge grinder inside, so it would make it tough to hear in or near there. Good coffee, bars and baked goods. No real food offered. read more

He decided the beans (which had been in our freezer) were not up to his standards, gave us a new pound, and ground it up fresh. I've never had this kind of customer service anywhere. This is a great shop... they know their coffee. Owner Doug is very knowledgeable and friendly - we talked for a long time about roasting and espresso. I'm an espresso snob and when I'm in town (I don't live in Cali) I always pick up a lb or 2 of their espresso beans... they are in my top 5 espresso blends ever - And I have tried blends from around the world. We wandered into La Costa Coffee Roasting randomly during our vacation, with little expectation. But the drink was ridiculously good and even though it was sized for a giant, I couldn't put the thing down. I kept moaning from being overfull, but then saying, "Just one more sip!" A friend recommended this place for the music and we came because I live just down the street! How have I lived so close and never come before?! A little jazz band was performing and it was most enjoyable. A little On Green Dolphin Street, Girl From Ipanema, and other lovely tunes, paired with tropical passion herbal tea on a Saturday night was wonderful. This place is my jam! Excellent freshly roasted beans on the premises. Large selection of beans and drinks. Fresh, tasty pastries locally sourced. The baristas are professional, knowledgeable, and experienced. They also know their regular customers ( there are a lot of those) and how they like their coffee. There service is fast and accurate. Sometimes there is a line to the door, but it moves quickly. There are always regulars waiting at the door for them to open at 7:00. The owner, Doug, is a great guy and knows his coffee. Great ambiance with seating inside, a few less than pre-covid. Also seating at tables with umbrellas on the adjacent shared patio. Come about 9:30 on Tuesday and you'll be treated to some great live music in the patio. Two friends and I have been meeting here every week for a long time. Delightful, This is a great local type coffee shop. It has an interesting vibe and tons of things to choose from. What I ordered: Tropical Breeze 4oz $5 The drink was blended well and if you like sweet this is your drink! The staff was nice and the place is clean. The only negative is that the tables were a little too close to wear you picked up the coffee so I had to do a little zig zag to get it. This place is fantastic and my regular remote office. Conveniently located across from the Carlsbad Library, this place not only has superb coffee roasted on the premises by the owner Doug, but refills are only .50¢! I've met some fascinating people here who have become friends over the past few months: screenwriters, fellow authors, college professors, students, AI computer scientists, retired doctors, musicians.... it's the closest La Costa comes to a 'salon' for the local intelligentsia. Even more important and the reason I'm so evangelical about this place is that the owner exercises a compassionate openness to some of the local homeless, distressed and sometimes just down on their luck patrons. Doug is not just running a business, he's created a space, outdoors and indoors for people to mix from all walks of life. You know, the way it's supposed to be! The WiFi is also consistent and recently upgraded to accommodate the swelling clientelle who come here to work, like me. If I'm between checks, I can come down and sit all day without having to buy a thing and no one says a word. When I do have the resources, I spend my money here to support this human oasis in the midst of the affluent desert La Cost can sometimes be. Ten stars! Highly recommended. I really want to like this place. The coffee is decent. The location is perfect in a beautiful part of Carlsbad. But like with everything people can easily ruin it. I don't typically expect extra niceness and I understand that everyone can be in a not that perfect mood, but if someone thinks that he is entitled to make a comment about you or tell you where to stand or, even worse, basically harass you thinking about you like you are a bag of viruses then this is very, very wrong. I think such places with such employees should disappear and make space for someone who is capable to treat people better. This is why you come to have coffee. read more

I don't know, for some reason I've been here twice and the last two times I've come here I haven't enjoyed my latte- which to me is sacred and I'm not even that picky. It was just too bitter..too strong i want to say and walking inside is just really stuffy? It sucks cuz I work around the area and love my coffee and supporting local shops but i honestly would rather go to the starbucks down at Von's. People here are your stereotypical la costa/alga natives...I have yet to go in and meet an actual decent person...they're all too snooty and like, critical i guess... And maybe it's just me.. I really like this coffee shop so far. Comfy seating both inside and out, good coffee and friendly staff. Their outdoor seating is particularly awesome. Big nice comfy couches and lots of them. I have been a few times and keep getting the vanilla bean americano. I don't need to add anything to it and have enjoyed it both iced and hot. There are some nice shops and restaurants around the shopping center as well. Definitely worth checking out! read more
