Im not very attached to my furniture but,my wife has a studio that she gives music lessons from, so we have TWO grand pianos. I had very high hopes using this company due to Yelp reviews, but was grossly disappointed in virtually every aspect of this move. My background - 6x military/full service, long distance, cross continental and international moves in the past 7 years. 1 bedroom apartment w/o garage. No major appliances. Bed/desk/chair/couch for major furniture only. Having seen how fast movers typically work when they're being paid by mileage and poundage, vice getting paid per hour, this was absolutely ridiculous how slow this team was. Normally I'm unable to help movers because they're moving so quickly - packing, moving, staging gear, etc., but with this team, I was clearly the third mover helping the process out. There was zero sense of urgency until I formally called them out on taking their sweet time. Their packing work was extraordinarily shoddy - literally boxes half full and others looking like they "poured" my bookshelves into boxes with books with bent pages and cracked open, with taping jobs that I have never seen in any of my moves (who tapes "x"s on the boxes instead of sealing the edges?). To describe the entire process - sloppy. Considering how expensive this process was and how little was done (they were unable to move my 1 bedroom apartment ten minutes away in 5.5 hours, from an apartment w/ an elevator to a single story house with street access), I did not get value for my money. I ended up moving the remaining 20% of my stuff w/ my friend, fuming about how much money was spent and wasted with La Jolla Moving Company. *UPDATE* (2.5 months): I finally closed the loop w/ the staff and customer service side of the house w/ La Jolla Movers. Initially they seemed very concerned and wanted to do right by me, calling me and being proactive to find out what happened and to rectify the situation. I fully understand and accept that they cannot control every single one of their movers and drivers (reasonable), so I was very clear that my issues were w/ my particular movers, and that they probably do have plenty of good movers in their staff. Ultimately it was determined to refund me some of the time that was lost in the move, which I thought was fair. If this was done expeditiously, I would have easily changed my review to 3+ stars, because a leadership team's follow-up is everything, and the effort to make things right and do the right thing by the customer (not just catering to a customer's whiny needs) - should be recognized. Honesty and integrity are important in a moving company. It ended up taking months to finally close this loop, which ended up being very frustrating with me constantly hunting down CSRs and leadership. Yes, I believe the final financial settlement was fair, but the multiple delays and lack of communication made things incredibly difficult. I tried to give them plenty of opportunities to prove the experience to be an anomaly, but ended up still somewhat frustrated w/ my experience. First time female customer, apprehensive about using a moving company UNTIL I found La Jolla Moving Company. I called to book my appointment and the process was seamless. On move day, Dwayne and Anthony were my move crew. I was absolutely blown away by their worth ethic and level of professionalism. It is evident that they are passionate about their jobs and truly work to appease their customers. La Jolla Moving company is very lucky to have these two gentlemen representing them. I was nervous about having anyone else touch my personal belongings, as some of the items in the move belonged to my great-grandpa. However, they handled our personal items with care, individually wrapping each item. They truly went above and beyond to make sure I was at ease with the move and cared for my items as if they were their own. My biggest fear was something would be damaged in the move. Avoid at all costs!! Thieves work for this company! I've waited a few months to leave this review, as I wanted to be 100% certain that they were actually stolen. After using La Jolla Moving Company, a box with 4 nice watches and a series of tie bars went missing. After checking every single moving box, completely unpacking everything, and looking over my personal vehicle, I can confidently say that my watches were stolen. One of the movers was chatting with me about a few things and casually mentioned how he "did time" in the past. I wasn't surprised by his comment, but it made me a bit worried for my belongings. This guys are something else, so professional and prompt! I hate moving like really it's the worst nightmare, but using their service was one of the best decisions I've ever taken. They helped me move my 1 bedroom apartment into a new one, everything was wrapped with a shrink wrap (dressers, chest, night stands etc) fragile items they wrap with blankets, my antique mirrors got here safe and sound. And yeah the other great thing is wardrobe boxes!!! No more hassle with your clothes, especially if you have a lot of them Bonus to that they are just an awesome people. Used these guys to help my cousin move to her new place in San Diego. The guys were very helpful and responsive since we had a few delays due to the new landlord being a bit late with the drop off to the new house. The guys got the job done pretry quickly and were very cautious with all the furniture. I would definitely recommend them as they are all pretty helpful and a really down to earth crew. My cousin couldnt make her mind up as to qhere some furniture should go and the guys kept moving things around for her with a smile on their face and with no complaint. Using this company aka S&D Movers also, was the most expensive decision I made this year. You only see the good reviews apparently on Yelp these days until the company pays to have them removed. I have no evidence that this happened but all I can say is when I went from one house to the new house, my expensive jewelry was gone! A friend of mine recommended this company. Since I trust my friends, I followed his recommendation. They made this move fast and easy. I had used different companies in the past and somehow they always made my move stressful. This time, I said to myself that I will only use a company recommended by my friends. No stress and no damage from these guys. The most fragile item for me was my 75 inch flatscreen TV. Called La Jolla moving Company. Within 10 minutes had everything in place for my Friday move. Friday morning Manny and George were prompt and courteous and patient. I had a ridiculously heavy sleep sofa that was a change for all the doorways it had to go through. Warning: high praises ahead for La Jolla Moving Company. Seriously, how can you say anything negative about a mover that meets and exceeds all your expectations? These aren't your run of the mill bed-buggers. Not even close. From the initial phone call until returning the truck, things went super smooth and we were treated very professionally. Over the years I've hired my share of home movers and have had fairly good luck, save a couple here and there, but few if any standout like this company. I live in St. Paul, MN, but my job requires me to live part of the time in various parts of California. Now, I'll admit I wasn't moving far, in fact just to the other side of La Jolla, but it's still a major move. The only difference is the drive time from one house to the next. and this time it was less than 10 miles, but the way they do things, I would have been prepared to move cross country. So, how does La Jolla Moving Company compare to it's competitors you ask? Well let me gladly explain. First the folks that answer the phone are pleasant, helpful and caring. Not in a hurry, rude nor curt in any way. The office people were equally as kind and considerate. The movers were, well pretty much awesome. They instilled a sense of professionalism like no other I have met in the home moving biz. They didn't rush, they listened if I had some concerns or suggestions. They explained everything perfectly every step of the way. They arrived AND completed the move on time. As is often said of politicians, I would have a beer with these guys. Lastly, there were no surprises when it came to the bill, which was a surprise in and of it's self. No extra charges, no unexpected surcharges, simply no hidden charges of any sort. "La Jolla Movers" don't actually have much to do with La Jolla. They advertise a local address, but their truck is not identified with the company name and they hand write "La Jolla Movers" on the receipt. The callback I got from an initial email inquiry was from an 818 number despite them showing an 858 number on the website. Make sure you read the emailed proposal very carefully so you are aware that "consumable" products like tape are charged separately at $4.00 per roll. The tape they use is available from Amazon for about $2.00/roll. They like to use lots of it. I guess tape is considered an optional add-on to secure moving blankets on furniture. For some inexplicable reason the agency that oversees movers has decided that drive time should be billed at double the rate for packing, so the quoted rate of $95.00/hour becomes $180.00/hr for drive time. I don't quite understand why driving is so demanding. They are not to blame for this, but do take advantage of this provision. I'm puzzled by all the 5 star reviews. When I spoke with the office I described what we wanted moved and when the movers arrived they complained that I hadn't mentioned a few extra small pieces. The lead mover was verbally abusive but his partner was very pleasant. My next move will be with a company that provides a fixed cost estimate and doesn't nickel and dime me with additional charges. read more

After receiving a few bizarre quotes from other moving companies around the local area we had finally decided to go with the one that offered us the best price. More specifically, these guys did not necessarily give us the lowest price but they gave us a price that fit well with how much work we wanted done throughout the move. This includes the equipment we had requested to be used as well as the types of boxes we wanted our furniture to be packed into to ensure their safety throughout delivery. What a great value! Maybe my expectations are moderate(Because I've never hired movers). I remember hearing all kinds of negative things about movers so , I was very sceptical about hiring a moving company. After looking through so many moving companies on yelp I stopped on La Jolla Moving. When I talked with Mike, he seemed like more then a sales person, he took the time to make sure I had done everything on my part to save money. Because I needed packing done , they gave me a rate that had everything included( this was very easy to understand). Come the day of the move, I had a team a movers that were wonderful. George and his team were real GENTLEMEN, polite,hard working and a pleasure to have in my home.I was ready for something to break during the move, I figure that must unavoidable. Drumroll ..........NOTHING broke, no dents ,no scratches these guys were perfect. My be the reason is because they had all furniture padded and wraped before it was taken out. Fail!! This passed weekend I needed to move my family into a bigger place because my wife is pregnant. I went down to U-Haul to rent a truck and then hired some labors that were standing outside of the location. BAD MOVE on my part. Before I knew it the whole day had passed and we had only moved out just our living rooms worth of furniture, and to make matters worse we accidentally broke the leg off my grandmother's buffet and put a deep gouge in the hardwood floors. My wife got on the phone without me even knowing it and called for La Jolla Movers to come save the day. much to my surprise they were able to come out the same day on such a short notice with 3 Guys and a big truck. they had everything properly wrapped and moved out of there in no time without further incident. Let me start by saying that the guys who came to move me were great, worked hard, were polite, and did not scratch or ding one wall. Great job. Only one piece of furniture was damaged, but it was from ikea so maybe expected. I had two problems. One was that the price per hour does NOT include the shrink wrap they use on everything, the old scrap cardboard they use to protect the furniture they are moving or the old TV boxes they used to put your TV in. I thought using old TV boxes was a smart move, until I found out they charged me to use that box. They charged an extra $400 for all that scrap cardboard. Yes, they charged $400 for using garbage to protect the furniture that they are supposed to protect anyway. That was a huge zinger. So BEWARE of this. I find that to be pretty deceptive. It added an extra 40% to my moving charges. On a $400 move it would add an additional 100% charge to your bill. The other issue I had was that they couldn't fit all my furniture in the truck so just left it at my old house. What does one do at that point? They would have moved it but charged me an extra round trip fee, plus gas, plus an extra 2 hours of time, plus all that extra cardboard again. It would have cost another $400 to get the rest of my furniture. Talk about an inconvenience. I had to get a truck and move it all myself. So, other than feeling like I got completely ripped off for paying for the temporary use of their scrap cardboard and old TV boxes, and having to deal with moving some of my furniture myself, they were good. read more

We moved this past weekend from PB to Carlsbad and were so happy we went with La Jolla Moving Company. Our move was super easy to schedule even though we only did it one week in advance. On the day of the move we had Angel, Albert, and Mike R. They arrived exactly in the time window they said they would and they were efficient, friendly, and easy to work with. They set up our carpets and beds in each bedroom and made sure that all of our boxes and furniture were put in exactly the rooms we needed them to be so that we wouldn't have to move things around later.
