The highlight of La Mar was the pulpo crocante, or the "crispy octopus" for me. If you think octopus tentacle is chewy and tough, you have not had Peruvian pulpo crocante, my friend. These octopus tentacles are first slow-cooked until tender, then they are either seared or fried to give the outside a nice crunchy, charred texture. For starters, this place is so new that Uber or Google does not find it quite yet. It's a 12 min walk from our office in Bellevue so we walked it. Opening is in a week and we are happy to be one of the groups who got invited to dine. Two of my colleagues hail from Singapore and it's delightful to get them to try something new. We tried pretty much everything on the menu. La Mar has been around in San Francisco for over a decade (since it first opened in 2008 I have been going there), so it's wonderful to see after so many years it decides to open its first Pacific Northwest restaurant in Bellevue, Washington. My former San Francisco resident turned into Washingtonian says one such restaurant exist in Panama City, which he frequents. An anecdote I didn't know know that I needed to know until now. A few months ago, when I mentioned about this restaurant venture to a friend of mine in Sao Paulo, they found such restaurant also exists in Sao Paulo, Brazil. La Mar Bellevue features some important local sourced ingredients. If you are into seafood, you will find the fish super fresh and the ceviche menu similar to its sister restaurant in San Francisco. My favorite was the grilled octopus on the second course menu besides the ceviche combo. The most surprised dish was the eggplant. I did not know what I was eating at all. It's so meaty and delightful - a hint of sweet and sour. The pork belly and shrimp fried rice and duck leg clay pot of rice reminded me something you'd get in Korean restaurants, but better flavor. My friends' favorite dish was the wagu beef nigiri. It was pretty decadent. Bellevue location serves up high end Peruvian seafood, sushi and Chinese food combined with a lot of innovative cocktails. The service is impeccable - very attentive for being second day under a trial period. The dishes are delightful. Most importantly there is a small detail that made all food photogenic. The lighting on the table is super unusual,, and it really helped to create instant social media ready food-log photos. I was let in on a well known fact - this restaurant is nestled inside of the new Amazon buildings (there are three in fact), and it's already been rumored to be the Amazon cafeteria given its proximity. Alas, I don't work for Amazon, but my Bellevue office is not too far away. I was chatting with one investor and they asked if Singapore should be on the location to go next. I said yes. Amazing and unique food. The items are small portioned and expensive but exquisite taste. It's so nice to have restaurants of this caliber in the greater seattle area. This is a wow place. The food quality should impress most. They even have a full vegetarian menu, which was an amazing surprise for us. The service was a little mixed. For example it took a long time to just get water. Also, I felt our water stopped checking in on us mid way. Some of silverware wasn't clean. Overall we will be back and it's now one of our favorites. read more

We decided to try La Mar for restaurant week. Our dining experience was exceptional! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly and even wished a cheerful "happy birthday" The restaurant is stunning! The coastal details and decor are upscale, fun & inviting. Our sever was so knowledgeable and friendly. We really appreciate the time she took to explain both the restaurant week menu & the regular menu to us. The rest of the staff was equally attentive, clearing plates promptly & refilling our water glasses ensuring we were well cared for without ever feeling interrupted. Each dish was plated beautifully just like something out of a magazine. The mix of flavors on the ceviche and roquitas dish was scrumptious. The main course Wagyu beef cheeks was so tender. I'm not usually a fan of tres leches but this dessert was just the right amount of sweetness and the little meringues were so tasty. The restaurant surpassed our expectations by surprising me with a mango sorbet with a birthday candle. Thank you for making my birthday celebration so memorable & special. Great, no waiting, but it changes the experience a little. I don't mind if my fresh fish sit for a moment, but my hot octopus dish was room temp by the time I finished enjoying my cold dishes. This may be a personal preference. Food- delicious, fresh, high quality, vibrant visually and on your taste buds. Large selection of raw and cooked foods. *complimentary root chips with sauce. This was my first time visiting La Mar and very impressed with the ambience and you can tell that they put a lot of thought into the decor. I can also see why this is a place you would go on occasions since the food was definitely a treat. The food was definitely more for sharing as you do want to try everything instead of just focused on one dish which was also recommended by the wait staff. We ordered the Bachiches tiraditos, the grilled octopus, arroz con pato and side of Yukon fries. The Bachiches was very good and the presentation was so beautiful with local halibut that was very fresh. The pulpo anticucheros was very tender and fresh with some great with different sauces like chimichurri and botija olive aioli. The arroz con pato was just alright, it wasn't as crispy as it was made to sound, but it did fill us up even if we had a Yukon fries which was seasoned just right and not too much salt. I've been to this restaurant in San Francisco and my first time coming here. Was here for a business meal with my coworker and partner. Overall, food was good. Proportions were so small. I felt like I was eating a child's meal. I made the mistake of getting the tasting menu. I wouldn't recommend it. I think Peruvian is my new favorite food. They have so many unique flavor combos and unique dishes. We were seated outside in the back, which felt private despite being in downtown Bellevue with peaceful views of tall buildings and art installations. The menu had so many options, and our waiter did a great job guiding us. We had one cold and one hot appetizer. The hot appetizer was crispy eggplant and we loved it. The cold appetizer was a mishmash of veggies (artichoke, mushroom, tomatoes, avocado) in a spicy, creamy sauce. My main of seafood pasta was absolutely great, with generous protein portions including halibut, scallop, prawn, and octopus. My wife was happy with her veggie Loma saltada. We were both too stuffed for dessert. My small gripe was as follows: I wanted a refill of my Coke when my entree came. I couldn't get a server's attention until it was half finished. And then I didn't get the Coke until the meal was finished, at which point I didn't want it anymore. This place will try to upsell you until your last breath. The service was not good and while I had a reservation, we were seated 10 minutes past, which was already a bad sign. As soon as you sit down, you get asked " Would you like still or sparkling water from Saratoga?" it took me a moment to process, but then I said tap, and immediately I felt that the waiter was judging me. When I decided to order ceviche, the waiter was really pushing me and pressuring me to do the tasting trio of ceviche instead. I just didn't appreciate the constant upsell and I felt this throughout the entire dinner. I feel like this place is upscale enough without resorting to these kinds of shady tactics. Anyway, the food was just OK and honestly too salty for me. The traditional ceviche was just OK. I think the flavors were really good, but the cut of fish felt a bit too chewy and tough to me. I did like the octopus flavors, but it could have been cooked a bit more tender. The arroz con mariscos was pretty good overall and had pretty fresh seafood, but again just felt a little bit too salty to me. This was pretty mediocre for the staggering price tag, and along with the pushy service, it just wasn't an enjoyable meal. I won't be returning to this location. read more

The space is huge, decor very cool. Somewhat of an open kitchen concept. We arrived at 5 when they opened, and still had to wait for our table although they were not busy. Minimal wait time, but I found the wait at all was odd. The chairs were uncomfortable because you could feel the bar going across the seat underneath your knee area after sitting for a while. Service was fantastic and staff go above and beyond. Wine list was decent and wine prices were also accessible. Food prices were over inflated in my opinion. $45 for a 2 piece scallop appetizer and sadly although the Parmesan foam was quite tasty it overpowered the scallop in this dish that if you didn't know you were eating a scallop to begin with, you wouldn't have known it was scallop at all. Wagyu nigiri was also just 2 small pieces of an overpriced one bite. Lomo saltado was just ok. Prepared differently from any others I've had. Beef was tender, veggies were nice, but I was sad that there were just large diced potatoes instead of French fries in the dish. And the sauce was more of a brown gravy and a little underwhelming. I wanted a brighter citrusy soy based sauce and it was missing the aji chili sauce. The dish completely missed the mark for me. $125 Maine lobster dish was a disappointment for me too. My husband enjoyed it, but I didn't like the flavor of the sauce it was in, and it would have been nice to have an empty plate on the side to discard the shell pieces after eating the meat. Tres leches cake was a let down for me too. Sadly it was just drenched in the cream sauce that was pooled at the bottom of the bowl. Way too much that the cake was just mush. We were also sat at the very back of the restaurant (odd for getting there when they opened) next to the back door and at least 4-5 times while we were there people from outside kept coming to the door to try and get in thinking it was an entrance, only to be disappointed the door was locked. It was a bit annoying and out of courtesy to others, we kept getting up from our meal to open the door for them. They need to put a large sign on the door if they have it locked and don't want people to think it's the entrance. Overall, for the price and missing the mark on basically every dish, I don't think I would bother coming back. read more

This is our fourth time dining at La Mar and we're overdue for a review! Definitely one of our all time favorite restaurants! We had the fried fish, the eggplant dish, the rice and seafood, the tuna tacos, the cebiche sampler trio and many more of their dishes and each one has been amazing! Unique flavorful sauces! Tonight's crab dish was particularly amazing too! Wow! Can't say enough. Definitely worth it, especially if you what to treat your significant other to a tasty and classy experience. I will start this off with saying that last year I went to Jarana - one of their sister restaurants in New Jersey for my honeymoon. And this year La Mar for our first anniversary. The food was worse than Jarana and yet more expensive. The ambiance was too much for us but obviously just right for Bellevue which I will blame myself for not reading the goal of this location. Service was ok, I can tell they were trying their best with not enough support. There is an audience for this experience in this area but to me and my wife the cuisine prepared was treated as exotic when it's just normal Peruvian food (at least in NJ). I'd rather give my money to a mom and pop Peruvian restaurant. Though I will definitely be visiting their sister restaurant again. read more

It was everyone's first time visiting our server was very helpful explaining the menu & what were top sellers. I ordered one if their ceviche & my goodness was it delicious. If you cant handle spicy food this might not be your choice of ceviche since it has habanero. Their 3 leches coconut cake was DELICIOUS. I would go back simply for that dessert its self. La Mar isn't an everyday place...it's a special-occasion type of place like Ascend. Great ambiance. Came here for a dinner at golden hour and the first impression was quite mind blowing. The food was great too. I've been to the SF Embarcadero location so I knew what to expect - solid Ceviche and seafood. No issue there. But I have a story about my idiocy and how no one saved me from my mistake. When introducing the menu, the waiter of course also mentioned some not-on-the-menu specials. He didn't list the prices. One of the dishes was a striped sea bass and it sounded great. Unfortunately I thought it was a Catch of the Day which was something like $54. He didn't name anything else as the Catch of the Day so I just made the wrong conclusion and ordered it. Turns out it was a HUGE whole filet'ed fish that was indeed good (although my friend greatly disliked the sauce, remarking that it was too bitter). The price of this was actually $130. When we ordered it the waiter didn't say anything like "are you sure? It's a lot for just two of you" etc. It was my mistake not to confirm the price of this special, so I own that, but I would suggest that if you wanted to ensure that your party felt good about their choices and not face sticker shock at the end of the evening, that you'd make sure you got things right for them. I've learned my lesson for the future to be absolutely sure what I'm ordering when doing so. read more

We went here for a date night for our anniversary. We made a diner reservation for a Saturday on open table. A lot of the things were great: the ambiance, the salmon ceviche, the squid ink tempura appetizer and the sour drinks. We had the special lobster which was absolutely delicious. It was also an awesome portion size, they should list good for 2. Unfortunately, the halibut was overcooked We returned it. We then asked for the dessert menu which took a bit of time to get to us and then we had to wait 20 minutes for the dessert (ordered the tres leches). We had to ask for the check immediately as we had to rush home by 8:30pm to relieve the nanny. The waitress was kind enough to take the halibut off the bill for us. TL;DR: A very immaculate eatery worthy of a fancy night out (with what should be attentive service and a price tag to accompany it). However, the food was way too salty and the service (a few weeks into opening) was inattentive leaving much to be desired. My wife and I chose to go to La Mar for a fancy night out. We heard great things from friends, so we sought to try it. However, upon checking in for the reservation at opening on a weekend, we ended up waiting 10+ minutes to actually be seated. No apologies when the host communicated to us that the person who checked us in actually didn't do it. Once seated, we got the drinks menu but no food menu for another 10 minutes. They pushed getting drinks. If you just want water, you have to ask for tap water... else you're paying for still or sparkling. The waitress assigned to us was slow despite only serving one other table. Granted she could have been new, but it likely contributed to our entire dining experience being nearly 2 hours for a mere 3 dishes. Wow, the food was SALTY. The portions were big. The highlight was the ceviche. The Arroz Con Pato and Seco Del Mar were insanely salty thus hiding the spices and other flavors. The fish and other meats were seemingly cooked well though. This is also not authentic Peruvian but rather many dishes are Japanese-inspired... a term which we determined meant Japanese curry spices inundating the savory dishes. The Arroz Con Pato frankly tasted like (very salty) Japanese curry! Parking is a pain in the Amazon garage. There is signage to avoid getting lost, but we still saw many folks getting lost. An absolutely incredible experience! We were greeted by the very enthusiastic manager, he was so kind and professional that I knew right away we were going to have a wonderful time. Our server was Fernando, and he did an amazing job. He is so knowledgeable about the menu and all the ingredients, and that really helped because I had never had Peruvian food before. As Seattle Restraunt week typically has set menus we were not sure what we were going to get but this set menu was absolutely delicious. We opted for the drink pairing as well and it was perfect! We got so excited everytime they brought out the next course as it just got better and better. The dessert topped it off and was esquisite! Our bartender steered us through our courses with pisco cocktails that paired beautifully with the citrus-forward sauces that we were about to experience. They were also knowledgeable about the ingredients and sauces that I was not familiar with making them more of a guide through this menu. So much to try. I shared a few pics below. Just know that the seafood is fresh, the dishes are Peruvian with intrinsic Japanese and Chinese notes. What touched me was the Lomo Saltado. Tenderloin, potatoes, onions sautéed in oyster and soy sauces. My mom is Filipino. I grew up with this dish, but it's called Bistek and more tart because the oyster sauce is replaced by calamansi(limes). When I was in Panglau, I enjoyed it beachside under a tree. Their Lomo Saltado reminded me that this a small, integrated, and delicious world. read more

The flavors are world class but the textures of the meat were average. I could have licked the last drops of the sauce of the ceviche but the halibut had tough chewy parts. Had a slightly fishy smell, would skip the ceviche next time. The lomo saltdo was bursting with flavor but the beef had a slight toughness to the exterior. The corn bits that dotted the dishes were so interesting texturally - a special touch. The chocolate cake was heavenly, dulce de leche and what seemed like a cream cheese layer, just delightful flavors and creaminess. Enjoyed the atmosphere and service was attentive. I've eaten at some of the best restaurants in Lima and Gaston is a legend in Peru. Short of taking a flight to Lima this is as good as it gets and my Peruvian wife agrees. It's like a slice of home for her. Everything is just as good. It's not cheap but a trip to Peru is more. It's really. Don't order a steak that's dumb here and not worth it. The food was amazing. The service was great. Both definitely were 10/10. The decor is nice. But the loud club music was obnoxious. We had to raise our voices in order to hear each other. I would give La Mar 5 stars if it weren't for the obnoxious, loud techno music. It was difficult to have a conversation. read more
