I bought 2 doz tamales this morning $72 the mass is not fully cooked . I'm on vacation !!! Tried calling la perla bakery the number is disconnected no new number I'm really upset I'm freezing them and returning . Does anyone have the new phone number

On my way home, I saw a huge sign in front of La Perla Bakery that advertised: TAMALES! My reflexes stomped on the brakes and made a u-turn. Found parking in front of the bakery. :) This place is pan dulce heaven! Everything fresh on my visit! Walk up to the front counter grab a tray and tongs then have at it: pick and choose your pastries/breads/cake slices. Tamales were delicious! They only had 3 options: green chicken, red pork, cheese n jalapeño. Family loved them. Masa was flavorful and moist; the filling inside was the right amount. The tamales are on the spicy side except pork. Sat & Sun: Menudo available. Street parking only. Bring money: cash only!

    Cheese and jalapeño tamale

Today was my first and last time @ La Perla. Ordered 2 tamales. 1 cheese jalapeño. One red chicken. I circled the picture to show how little cheese was added. When I bit in them, the masa was undercooked and mushy with minimal ingredients inside. Threw them both out bc didn't wanna catch food poisoning with undercooked masa. Got the menudo. Had no flavor. Very little hominy. I had to add salt and hominy to the menudo once I got home. Yes, I added the hominy at home bc I'm Hispanic and hominy is in the cupboards. They only accept cash and Zelle. Their website says they accept card and apple play but that's incorrect. Neither La Perla nor the market next door have an ATM. Paid $23 for disappointment.

Best Rosca de Reyes north of the border.

For amazing pan dulce, champurrado, chicharrones and tamales... This is the place. Baked fresh throughout the day and into the evening, this bakery is a classic in Northeast LA. The best Rosca de Reyes outside of Mexico is made here. It is super moist, soft, sweet, and has a hint of rum. Yum yum yum. I've been coming here since the 90s, and it's been consistently good. The prices have risen, but what do you expect from any business doing business in the least business-friendly and most-taxed city? And yet, this small family run operation is holding fast and producing delicious mexican baked pastries. Conchas, cuernos, ojos de buey, empanadas, campechanas, donas, bollilos, teleras, galletas y mas! If you live around here, then you know. If you don't, now you know. And as far as those reviews showing moldy bread... ask yourself when have you ever known fresh bread to mold? If you take it home and forget about it for a week or longer, you will get mold. That is not any bakery's fault.. It's yours. Eat it while it's fresh or even better while it's still hot.

    Comfort food!!

Classic Mexican bakery with pan dulce, tamales and other savory items. Tamales were really fresh, nicely filled and not dry. Good balance of masa to filling ratio. Also, the masa is pretty tasty as well. Cheese tamale: had a good amount of cheese, jalapeno slice and a spicy yet not too hot red chili. A very well balanced tamale. Chicken tamale: tender juicy chicken with a spicy salsa verde. This one had a bit of heat but in a good way. Can definitely eat 3 in one sitting. Pork tamale: tender pork with flavorful red chili. You won't be disappointed. Pan dulce was fresh and soft no issues at all. This was my second time patronizing this business will definitely be back!

Staff us so friendly , came herenfor pan dulce and some tamales. Parking was a little tricky but you can get by. There isn't may people eating inside. Most people take it to go. It's cash only or zelle , so bring that cashhhh! Totally worth it

Rosca de Reyes this was their small!

This is my family's 3rd year of getting our Rosca de Reyes here and it never disappoints! I think its my favorite Rosca Ive ever had! The pan is also delicious :) Anyone that has ever helped us has been super sweet as well. Small classic panadería :)

After watching a feature on this place on a Spanish language news cast, I decided to join the masses to buy a coveted rosca. Waited in line (I anticipated this much), and it was worth the wait. I'm not a huge rosca fan, but this one was good! A little sticky, a lot sweet and very fresh. On the pricey side..the small one was $30; the large $60. The spot is teeny- they sell pan dulce and tamales in addition to what seems like other hot food dishes on the weekends. Cash or zelle only, and the parking sucks since it's street parking on a busy residential street. I tried the tamales, and they were good.

The menu is quite simple, but beware that no prices are listed on the main menu, but they are on the paper menus. They accept Apple Pay/credit cards. I ordered the asada burrito and the pollo caramelo and added the grilled poblano (as recommended on Yelp!). The tortillas were the true stars -- soft, nice chew, with a buttery mouth feel (probably lard). The fillings were just ok. The inside reminded me of a Taco Bell 7 layer burrito -- a lot going on but all the flavors kinda blend together. I (incorrectly) thought the beans were refried, but they are not. Whatever is going on inside, I didn't find much structure. The burrito was the best. The caramelo was a lazily folded burrito. I read that it was like a quesadilla, but I couldn't disagree more. I would skip this next time. I spent $25 and it was a lot of food, but I wasn't impressed, especially given the hype and the fact that LA should really be the pinnacle of Mexican food. Not sure if I'll make a second trip here.

Now when you pull up originally you might think, "am I in the right place" but once you park and get into the courtyard, it is LOVELY! Amazing ambience! There is a bocce set up, string lights. It is a little slice of oasis in the middle of the fashion district. The restaurant itself - beautiful. I couldn't ask for more. Absolutely perfect in my book. Beautiful plants hanging, perfect Spanish music in the background (any place playing Natalia LaFourcade is a win). The drinks were great! I had the jungle bird which was fun. Food was so good too. The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried. Unfortunately my friends had gone to Funke the night before so they were comparing the squash blossoms and Funke won out, but they still liked Dama's! Small plates were enough for the 3 of us. The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

I was there last night for a birthday gathering and boy did I feel bad taking credit for coming to Mirate. The menu has completely shrunk, the best appetizers and entrees are no longer available and the service staff seems to have had a lot of turnover. I believe their previous chef (who was a genius) is gone and boy was that felt both in the food preparation and in the menu items themselves. They have also gotten much more budget friendly which would usually be a positive but when I'm in an establishment as beautiful and eclectic as this one with an entire tree running thru the middle I am expecting high end unique dinner items which previously felt worth the cost that are just not present anymore. Additionally of the 3 carne asada steaks that were ordered only one was medium rare. The other 2 had to be sent back and the Branzino's we ordered were tiny and pretty dry with no sauce or lemon on them at all. Very disappointed with what this restaurant has become and I most likely will not come back. With such an upscale feel there should be a menu and a staff that matches. I browsed the menu and had a really hard time deciding, but ended up on the cauliflower rajas taco, the crispy shrimp taco & the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The waiter recommended the crispy shrimp taco, but I actually enjoyed the vegetarian tacos more. I love cauliflower and poblano so that taco was a great starter. So much flavor and a variety of textures. The tortillas were super flavorful too. The potato taquitos came next and I am actually obsessed. The outside was perfectly crispy, the interior was soft, flavorful & cheesy. The sauce complimented it perfectly. I can not recommend them enough. The crispy shrimp taco was really good, but I also tried a crispy fish taco and would honestly get that over the shrimp. I think there was mango or something in the coleslaw of the fish taco because it had a really nice fresh flavor to it. Last, I had the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The mushroom shreds & the flavor were just perfect. Again, as a pescatarian I have really never had Korean BBQ because it's so heavily meat focused. I truly loved this taco. AMAZING. So efficient, very clean, love being able to see them prep food at the bar area…read more Pulpo a la brasas - low key a must, octopus is so tender. Didn't care much for the rice/beans but not bad. Comes with blue corn tortillas, but honestly the octopus and almond sauce (think b*tchin' sauce) were delicious. Great cherry tomato pico de gallo. Scallop aguachile - wowwww the scallops were so fresh, literally bursting is my mouth. They were sweet, tender, and perfectly paired with the tangy lime sauce. Taco de pulpo - ok so this is pretty much an assembled pulpo à la brasas, BUT I will say the full meal was more tender because it was an entire grilled piece of grilled vs one tentacle. If with a group, def recommend getting the entree to split vs individual tacos. Smoked kanoachi tostado - delicioussssss the smoked kanoachi (amberjack) was the perfect glue for the ceviche. Another banger. I was at capacity at this point, but the only change I'd make is swapping the taco de pulpo for the ahi tostado. So really, Holbox did everything right, and was so good it's gaslighting me into how I could have ordered more strategically. I arrived around 3:45pm on a Sunday, and the line wrapped around the corner. Bar seats are FCFS, so use that information wisely...and you may get seated immediately :P
