I grew up on Mexican food and consider myself an expert. I live in the area and decided to try some tacos from this place today. This taco shop had a very high yelp rating which swayed my decision to eat here. I ordered 2 carnitas, 1 cabeza, and 1 carne asada LARGE tacos. I also ordered the "California burrito". First of all, the food is not cooked to order like other places I've tried, the meat is kept in a steam table and the food is assembled into tacos, burritos, etc., as needed. The food was, at best, barely edible, with gristly meat, no flavor, and very bad salsa. I paid $19.65 for this meal, which I had to throw out because of the nasty after taste. Do yourself and your palate a favor and eat at another taco stand. Heck, even Colimas and Los Tacos (while not the best I have had) are better than this place. Great food but they don't like white people. Bryan is cool but the women there do not like white people. Due to taste and freshness It was my favorite mexican food spot in oceanside, after 2 or 3 months of visiting 5-6 times a week the woman making my burrito put scorching hot salsa on my burrito instead of the usual green I get. We used to drive the thirty minutes down to tacos el Gordo down in Chula Vista. And we finally found a place near us comparable (if not better). we stumbled across this place looking for bakery goods last minute for a party we were attending. At checkout we decided to try a few tacos. I got the pollo asado and my husband got the carne. Every single bite was amazing, even the tortilla. Which I'm pretty sure they make in store. I'm Mexican, grew up eating Mexican food all my life, love Mexican food, I cook Mexican food. With that said I honestly don't know what's all the hype, thumbs up, and great reviews on this place all about. On my visit I ordered carne asada fries, carne asada chips, and some beef tamales in red sauce. I was extremely disappointed and so was my entire family. Food was bland bland bland, no flavor, no seasoning, no taste. I also bought an horchata drink and pan dulce from the bakery and it was ok, so not impressed. Normally La Perla Tapatia is just great but today, Sunday March 13, 2022... WTF! I ordered the number 9 Carne Asada with Shrimp an adults' meal! The place was packed and some how I think the soup Nazis were working! Normally you get a large heaping of Rice and Beans today I got that meal made for a 5 year old "The Kids Meal" WTF and I paid $20 for a kids meal? ? I have never been disappointed ever with La Perla Tapatia! I GUESS THIS IS THE GREED TREND, AND ITS HERE TO STAY! My salsa tased like it was going bad! Normally I run out of the Tortillas they give you 4! I ended up with 3 Tortillas left over and I ran out of meat and shrimp! FOR $20 ! I HAD A TACO FOR $20! I would say Run to La Perla Tapatia in the past... Now I say RUN from La Perla Tapatia! Its not worth the cost save the money cook at home and use the money to buy gas! Corporate America large, medium and small companies are all passing the buck to the consumer and they continue to have record profits! I guess La Perla Tapatia wants to do the same! This place has amazing food. They catered for my wedding! They did an amazing job! Month and a half later people are still talking about how good the food was. They also made a couple different cakes/desserts! My dad (I wasn't blessed with enough time for dessert) keeps saying how moist and good the cake was. This place has good tacos and burritos, the only thing was their eating area was a little messy and there tables unorganized.

It's in a strip mall in Oceanside. It's a very clean and airy space with a tortilleria, bakery, deli and medium-sized market. You can get 2 giant veggie street tacos (beans and rice are cooked with only veg. oil!) with a mountain of delicious toppings. There's a meat side & a tortilla side of the grill, but if that's too close for comfort, the tortillas are so fresh they don't even need grilling.The woman who made my tacos went to the deli and grabbed (using clean plastic gloves) a big chunk of queso fresco and crumbled it over my hot tacos. Or get a torta - the bread is baked 25 feet from where you eat your sandwich--Each is for under 5 bucks. There are 2 big round tables by the window and a long counter with tall stools to eat at across from the deli. The salsas are homemade and delicious. Now you've eaten your tacos (you'll need a fork to eat all the toppings they gave you that didn't fit in the tacos. Now go to the bakery & treat yourself to some top notch pan dulce for dessert, maybe get a package of tortillas, tomatillo salsa and some avocados to take home? I was hoping to score some fresh street tacos, but in fact got tacos from meat that had been sitting in a warmer. Adobada was very greasy and they used old cilantro on my tacos. Some of the pictures of others who posted about tacos were so much better looking than what we got served. Got food poisoning....that tends to sour anyone from returning to an establishment. General rule of thumb: if you are afraid for your own health and safety to touch anything, if you see insects landing on your food, if the sour cream is left at room temp and chunky, don't eat there. Sometimes you have to follow your own (very good, if I do say so myself) advice and assume some yelpers either don't have taste buds, are personal friends of the owner and/or lack personal hygiene and don't believe this is a big deal. I am breaking up my review into two separate categories. This place as a bakery and this place a Mexican food joint. Their bakery is amazing. Awesome prices, fresh, and tasty. I love their cake. Sponge cake with whipped cream frosting. Not overly sweet like a grocery store. Been here a bunch of times for bakery and never had a problem. OK, now for the Mexican food half. I only tried their tamales. The pollo(chicken) verde (green) salsa ones. No joke, most disgusting tamales I've ever had. It was like they took dried out mics pieces of chicken that was under the broiler too long, shoved them into the yuckiest masa I've ever had, and cooked the already cooked chicken too long. Not only was the chicken dried and tough, but I found two bone pieces. Normally I am a big advocate for not wasting food, but I threw 2.5 tamales out of three away. The half I ate I regret eating. I spent the rest of the day sure I would come down with severe food poisoning. I didnt. I would never give their other Mexican food a try. Too scared to. And there is no shortage of Mexican joints around. And on a side note, the produce is very bleh. Not the freshest or the best selection. But also not overpriced. I've seen other reviewers complaining about them not liking non-mexicans. I can't say I felt particularly welcome, but I've never had trouble. A small part of me wonders if they gave me "old" tamales that one time. But that is speculation. And last a quick education if you are new to their bakery. To get their pastries, look for the large silver trays and nearby tongs. Use the tongs to grab whatever you like and pile it on the tray. Bring the entire silver tray to the register. They will bag things for you there. Just mentioning this because I was a bit confused first time through. read more

I've had their food a few times, its pretty good but I can't go back. I guess I'd never really looked around besides the bakery but tonight I did. The entire produce section was full of rotting vegetables, not starting to turn slightly vegetables, alarmingly rotten disgusting vegetables. The chicken in the deli case was yellow and petrified looking. There was zero effort given to cleaning up the huge volume of rotting shit all over the store. The center fruit stands were a mess too. If thats how things look where I can see, I don't want to see behind the counter. The food was good and I never did get sick, but I threw away my burrito without touching it tonight. We found this by accident after moving from La Costa to North Carlsbad (it's like a different country!) They have the BEST food! My sis-in-law, who LOVES tacos was visiting from San Francisco so we took her here. She had two tacos and went BACK for a THIRD because she knew it would be awhile before she came back!. Today was our third visit to this awesome taqueria! First, their aguas are NATURAL . . . no syrup or mixes like most taquerias. We've had the horchata, cucumber, and jamaica. Delicious. The cheese and jalapeno tamales are OFF THE HOOK! So delicious -- and $13.99 for a dozen. My son had the California burrito (loved it), and I had the sopes (one is very filling). After our meal, an employee (maybe the owner?) brought us a tray of fresh baked cookies! Incredible. PS: as we walked in, they were frying up a fresh batch of chicharron. What a great find! Wonderful fresh made tortillas, Mexican pastries made on the premises, and a full restaurant. We had shredded beef tacos, and an enchilada special. The rice and beans are really good, the beef seasoned really well and the extras to add on excellent. If you check in you can get a slice of cake. I will buy the sheet cake for birthdays and special events as it was really good and most, dense and mine tasted like a great strawberry short cake. They have some fresh produce, 3 nice cucumbers for$1 as an example. They also have a nice meat market, and homemade Chicharones. I will be back again and again! read more

The most authentic Mexican food in the whole damn area! I'm a gringo-fied Mexican, but I know delicious, homemade Mexican food when I see/taste it. This place is part restaurant and part mini-Mexican grocery store. You can buy pan dulce (sweet bread), fresh meat, and other favored Mexican delicacies. But the best part is the restaurant. It's like you've got your tias cooking right in front of you. I always go with the #9 plate, which is steak and shrimp. Just damn delicious! Their milanesa (chicken-friend steak) is FANTASTIC! This is JUST like my mother's cooking, if not better (don't tell her that). I usually dine-in about twice a week. The ladies there are sweet, accommodating, and plain 'ole friendly. Great food, great price, great service. We had La Perla cater my husbands retirement luncheon and all the marines gave the thumbs up. The quality, quality and variety of the buffet menu was incredible. Chips with guacamole, pico de gallow, main entrees with beans and rice AND dessertS. All great, our guest left full very satisfied.
