Holy crap, this place is good. My BF and I just moved to the neighborhood about a month ago. He wandered by this place a few weekends back to get a quick lunch and got his standby taco shop fare--California burrito. He was raving about it and insisted I try it. I dont even really care for California burritos, but OMG this was amazing. I popped by there yesterday as well for a quick snack--I got a carne asada taco and a cheese tamale. YUM. I dont do pastries, but their selection of Mexican sweets looks pretty awesome if youre into that sort of thing. This place is as fresh and authentic as it gets, well worth the side trip if you are heading north on the 5 and need a quick bite. Went there for a couple pounds of marinated Carne Asada on Sunday and left a pretty satisfied patron. La Perla is your ordinary neighborhood Hispanic market. They sell a variety of fresh meat, fresh bread (pan), and their homemade flour tortillas are to die for. They also have a Mexican restaurant inside the market where you buy anything that'd you'd find at an Alberto's but the quality is a bit better. They also have 4 beers on tap! It's located around the corner the East Side, or Posole neighborhood. On Mission Ave and Canyon Dr., in the same complex as AMPM. Personally, I'd prefer Primo's Market over La Perla, but the location is extremely convenient and the quality is still great! read more

WOULD GIVE 10 STARS IF POSSIBLE. The BEST, most authentic Mexican restaurant I have ever been to in the states. The food here tastes exactly like homemade Mexican food or like you're actually in Mexico. It's essentially set up sort of like subway/chipotle where you tell them what you want (whether it be a taco, burrito, torta, etc), and they build it for you right there on the spot. You can add whatever you want. I got one lengua taco, one tripa taco, and one carne asada taco all with cilantro, onion, and salsa verde- all tasted AMAZING! I also got a milanesa torta with tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, onion, cheese (queso fresco too, not just you're average cheese), cream, and chipotle. I have found so many great Mexican restaurants throughout California, but I have to say, this will be the only one I go to from now on. Completely surpassed all my expectations! This is a great place. It's a combination market, bakery and restaurant. You can eat in or take out. Four of us ate here after a youth soccer game (the O'side keeper should have been red-carded for pulling down our forward in the goal area, but that's another story). We started by ordering four random items (a tamal, a burrito, etc) off the menu and then had the cook pick stuff out for us. They had a lot of fun with this. It's been like 5 weeks since we went, so I don't remember what all we had, but it was all good. We went to the other side of the store and bought some pastry. The cream-filled pastries were fantastic and the flan was good (again - ask for their recommendations). We bought dried hibiscus and have been making ice tea at home, too. This place has it all! First, the taqueria is great. Got three tacos de adobada and they were delicious. They use yellow corn tortillas that tasted fresh. The meat was flavorful and oily, as meat should be. You also get to choose which toppings you want: the spiciness of your salsa, onions, cilantro, guacamole, etc. Also, was going to order the horchata but we got to sample the cucumber juice and it was great! Sweet and refreshing. It was all fantastic. There is also a panaderia that smelled wonderful, carniceria, aisle of random items to purchase, fresh fruits, and more. Nothing is worse than luke warm Menudo. After having it warmed up....great taste and seasoned just right. My Carnitas and bean burrito also needed to be heated up a little but I didn't bother with it. Besides, after I had them load it up with condiments it would have cooled it off some anyway. The salsas are fresh tasty and HOT. The girls are nice at the counter and helpful. We would go back ..... I'd also like to go back and get some of their Chorizo from the meat market. Really good authentic food with a good bakery selection and great aguas frescas. I come here's a lot on my lunch breaks and my co workers all love it too. On taco Tuesday they do $1 tacos and a topping bar so you can load it up with guac if you want. The nachos are a huge serving and will feed 3 people easy. I have never written a review for any place ever but this place deserves my first. The people here are super nice and helpful. My family and I talked about how nice and good the service was even after leaving the place. The food was really good - we had tacos (carne asada, carnitas, and fish), as well as the California burrito, which we highly recommend. It's not the most orderly place, considering it's like 3 businesses smashed into one, but my burrito was awesome. First time I've ever gotten peppers in a California burrito, it was made right in front of me, and they weren't stingy about adding guac or sour cream. Oh yeah, they've got bottled beers and 4 beers in tap, Sierra Nevada pale, torpedo, and 2 from belching beaver! Quite a pleasant surprise. My family really enjoys everything we have gotten from La Perla Tapatia. We have tried a few different items on the menu such as the asada street tacos, carnitas street tacos, carnitas burrito, king burrito and even just the bean and cheese burrito. Everything has been exceptionally delicious! My favorites would have to be the street tacos. Such a simple item, but done so well. The meat is really good on its own and the fresh cilantro, onions, and salsas complete them perfectly. The tres leches cake I got most recently was so good!! I don't have much to compare it to, but I really enjoyed the moist cake and fresh strawberries. To top it off at La Perla every employee that I have ever spoke to is very nice and pleasant. We eat here once every two to three weeks and it is such a treat. Excellent option, and very close to the base so it's also quite convenient. Ordering ahead through grub hub has been our go to during COVID. The food is ready fast, and they make it easy to get right in and out. Simply put, LOVE this place! read more

Most Mexican food is overpriced crap. We found this place by accident during the covid lockdown. We were able to eat outside at their tables. Best burritos in SD county hands down. They have everything from carne asada to el pastore and it's all perfectly done. Pretty cheap and they don't nickle and dime you for extras like sour cream or guacamole. I was really happy with the carnitas- my experience with most places is just chopped up pork with a lot of fat and gristle. At La Perla they do it right: slow roasted and hand shredded. With that said, there was a few times where I got a chunk of bone or two but this was easily overlooked. They also have a bakery section. The burritos are always big enough to fill you up so I never gave into the temptation to try any of the baked goods but it all looked great. read more
