They serve free chips with two kinds of salsa and a house special avocado jalapeño purée. Everything was fresh and authentic. We were pretty skeptical at first. We walked in around 7:30pm on a Friday night and we were the only ones in there, but thanks to the good reviews from fellow Yelpers, we gave it a shot. We were glad we did. Deciding that a change in pace was in order after a week in Eau Claire, my coworker and I concluded that nothing would satisfy the soul like some tacos. Admittedly skeptical at first, we did some Yelping and ended up at Taqueria La Poblanita. We ordered Lengua and Barbacoa tacos with a side of guac and chips.The meat was tender and flavorful, the tacos came with soft tortillas and all the authentic (onions, cilantro lime) fixins. Definitely reminded us of home. This is not Taco Bell which seems like the most recent 1-star review was expecting. Would come back here in a heartbeat if we're back in the area again. This is must stop location for my summer holiday weekend treks through Eau Claire. New decor this year. Food as good as ever. Tried the Mexican Sausage Burrito with red sauce this visit. Typically stay in Eau Claire for an annual trip to a Notre Dame home game and dinner did not disappoint this trip! I had sopes con carnitas and my dad had the chimi with Mexican sausage. Disappointed. I'm very confused with all the raving reviews, maybe they've changed ownership in the last year or so? I went here with my fiancé and we both felt the food was very bland, there was an overall lack of spice for nearly everything. The salsas were okay, but not memorable. The cheese dip had no seasoning in it and honestly tasted like it was watered down. The only flavorful part of my meal was the chorizo sausage in my chimichanga but I don't think it is worth going out of your way for. The rice and beans were very mediocre, the rice looked like it was made from a Spanish Rice box mix and not homemade. We were so bummed that we didn't have a good experience here. I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants and this one is fantastic. I could tell right away from the three salsas that they brought out that it was going to be quality. The light green avocado salsa blew my mind. I got pastor sopes and the tortilla was perfectly soft and crispy on the bottom. The guacamole is also really good. Lots of lime, very tasty. Easily the best Mexican food I've had in the Chippewa Valley, and maybe ever. Can't say enough about how good this place is. Food comes quickly and service is super solid, I've never waited long for a refill or whatever else I may need. Prices are super reasonable and the salsas are great, serving sizes are more than generous. YES YES YES! What this little place lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for it in cuisine! Spectacular! Loved the trio of sauces with the chips. Although this place looks a little out of style aesthetically as it kind of feels like you are eating in a cafeteria (especially across the street from the more modern looking, Azul Tequila), the three salsas they give you to start with are unique and tasty, the horchata I ordered was refreshing and layered in flavors, the service was friendly and fast, and the chimichanga I ordered with chicken and chorizo was excellent. My mother ordered the taco salad and she said that it was the best taco salad she has had (she ordered it with shrimp for an extra 99 cents and got close to a dozen large shrimp, generous to say the least). Overall, completely satisfied with the meal, definitely worth the experience. (Ask for spicy salsa, or use the extra salsa from your complimentary chips to add to your chimichanga for an extra kick!) read more

This was so tasty! I got a marinated pork chimichanga, and I couldn't even finish more than half. At $7.75 I thought it was a great value. The restaurant is run by a family and the authenticity of the place really stuck with me. Our waitress was this sweet little lady and I fell in love in the 45 minutes I was there. The salsas they bring out to you before your food is ready are also delicious. There's three of them and they're all unique in flavor, but I truly enjoyed each one of them. I just can't say enough good things about this place. My husband and I stopped through Eau Claire yesterday and had dinner at Taqueria La Ploblanita and by the end, I half-jokingly said "let's move to Eau Claire!" (We live in Missouri). We both loved the salsa as that came with the chips. My favorite was the tomatillo salsa, his the avocado creme. The portions of salsa they bring you aren't huge but our server was happy to bring more. Speaking of our server, he was really friendly and was very interested in whether we liked the food (WE DID) and was willing to let me order my new Mexican restaurant stand-by of a steak burrito even though it wasn't on the menu. (There were lots of temping things on the menu but I'm a creature of habit here.) It was delicious. Also I loved the refried beans and rice, though as other people have pointed out, the portions aren't as big as some Mexican places. (I'm not sympathetic to the complaints though. As I discuss below, the prices are very cheap. Buy extra sides if you want more beans. It's already a lot of food.) My husband is a vegetarian and even though there's usually something for him to eat at Mexican places (hence why we stop at them on road trips) there is a lot of variance in offering and quality. La Poblanita had tons of choices and he loved his veggie chalupa (a rare find) and just couldn't get enough of the avocado creme on it. The online menu is very well-done and indicates a bit more about what to expect in the veggie offerings than the menu in-store. He was very happy with his meal. We were also amazed by the cheap prices. My off-menu burrito, veggie chalupa, and a (very tasty) margarita plus generous tip was still under $30. The prices were so low we were concerned about how they stay in business. They have lots of positive reviews here but at 8pm on a Thursday it was pretty empty inside. We hope Eau Claire recognizes a good thing when they have it! read more

After our second foray at Taqueria la Poblanita, my sisters and I have decided that this place is not just the best Mexican in Eau Claire, but maybe the best food period. What did we order? Guacamole: Amazing. My sister and I were heaven. Chicken tacos with cilantro, onions and lime: absolutely fantastic. They season their chicken so well. Also, WOW to the corn tortillas. Mmmmm delicious. Chicken chimichanga: little sister loved it and I loved those samples she let me have. (Chicken is cut up, not shredded. They make the chimichanga stuffed with chicken, fantastic retried beans and cheese.) Green salsa chicken enchilada: wow!!! My sister raved about these. Tres leches cake: also very good and very rich.
