Solid mom and pop diner with really great local ambience. My server was super cherry, whistling to songs and getting the diner guests to sing along with him. I had been tempted to get the ham and cheese sandwich but was persuaded to get the Dominican breakfast which was a plate of fried eggs, fried salami, and fried cheese along with a plate of mashed plantains. The portions were huge and while good, it was really filling after the first few bites. I only got through one of each (egg, salami and cheese) before giving up. The tamarind juice which is home made was exactly what the meal needed, cutting through the heaviness and grease with a sweet but clean taste. It was really good and highly recommended. read more

Sandwiches that Puerto Ricans eat in the morning are so effing delicious. How do they make the bread so crispy? On my third visit here I watched the lady work the grill and realized that every component of the ham egg and cheese sandwich including the egg itself is grilled on the plancha. The end result is such heavenly goodness that is worth waking up for every morning. But obviously not everything is perfect. A media noche sandwich took an hour to cook and the pork became too dry after being left on the grill for too long. They are constantly out of Mallorca so having an entire section of the menu devoted to the sweet bread is almost deceiving. Once in, just grab a table and wait for the wait staff. The service, unfortunately, is not the best but the food, choices and prices are awesome. We had a great typical breakfast with scrambled eggs, pan sobao toast and coffee. There were 3 of us and we didn't pay over $15 including tips, 2 coffees, one fresh squeezed orange juice and 1 Malta. What a surprise! Coffee was 70 cents. I had the Mallorca breakfast sandwich with ham, egg and cheese. The sweet bread was not as sweet as a Hawaiian roll, I really liked it. My wife had the scrambled eggs with ham and cheese. The ham was a sandwich thin cut ham and the cheese was cooked in. The toast was some kind of roll that had been buttered and was very good. The food was all extremely inexpensive, except the orange juice which was $3.50. But, where do you get fresh squeezed OJ for that price? This is not a Michelin four star but the food is good it is a great place to get breakfast. We will go there tomorrow, for sure. read more

I went based on a recommendation by my wifey. She said it was a hole in a wall type of place, but it's nicer than that. More akin a diner. I went early during the lunch hour because I know PR is notoriously slow when it comes to busy lunch hours, and I am glad I did, since the place got progressively busier. I ordered the arroz con pollo with tostones. It came with a side of habichuelas. I give the plate a 3 star because it was all rice and two pieces of dark chicken meat. I prefer dark meat, so that's all good, and the rice was exquisitely seasoned. Just delicious. The problem is that it had no vegetables in it. I am used to having peppers, peas, etc, but this one had nothing but seasoning. I don't know if it's traditional that way, but the vegetables enhance the dish in my opinion. The habichuelas were yummy as well. Tostones, just delicious. The fresh orange juice was pricey at $3.5 but you pay for convenience. I come back but order something else. read more

It's the first local restaurant we got into in San Juan. First try of Puerto Rican food and we loved it! The place is very local (we even depend on other diners for translation and understanding the menu lol). Their special mofonogo are amazing and I had mine with seafood and Yuka, and it's really good. Yum! Came here because Comedor didn't have space to accommodate me and this place was right across the street. The contrast is crazy. Tourists flooded Comedor while this place had only locals and the people serving didn't speak English. As a traveler, I love getting a better feel of the culture and this definitely hit the spot. Prices were crazy affordable too, as my sandwich and coffee totaled about $6. I got the Mallorca combination sandwich (sweetbread) and it was freshly assembled and toasted. It was delicious! Filling but not too filling to where I feel gross. Coffee was really good too and cost only $1. I know I would have paid more than twice the price if I went to Comedor, and I've paid for more for way worse tourist-y food in PR. So glad I found this gem. The best breakfast sandwich I've ever had......So I came back later for lunch, the gentleman recommended the meat stew with rice and beans and that too was delicious. 4.5 stars. Great little diner with fantastic prices on food. They offer a variety of sandwiches - we tried a ham and cheese mallorca and a regular ham, egg, and cheese sandwich. The Mallorca was delicious - significantly smaller with egg bread - and a perfect size for breakfast. The other sandwich had much crunchier bread, if you prefer that sort of thing. The regular sandwiches were about twice the Mallorca's size. We got breakfast for two for about $10 (pre-tip), much better than we've done anywhere else in San Juan. Definitely great for affordable breakfast and people watching (it's clearly a place the locals go)! read more

We read all the glowing reviews and were disappointed to find this place is just a cheap diner with poor quality food. The coffee is cheap, yes, but it's because it comes in a tiny styrofoam cup, tastes like instant and the "milk" sure seemed like non dairy creamer. It make the coffee have a slimy film. Couldn't drink it. The fried egg and cheese breakfast sandwich was basic and bland. Pinky's sandwich was better. The fresh squeezed orange juice was the best part. Why go here on vacation when you can get poor quality diner food anywhere? Or at least don't come here thinking you're finding a "local gem." I got a pernil sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes. The bread tasted very fresh and the pernil was cooked perfectly. The orange juice was fresh squeezed which was really nice. Good coffee.
