The customer service was 10/10, such a sense of community in the space. The food was so good (the camera did not eat first haha) I got the asada burrito and the meat was cooked perfectly. Went for breakfast the food was OK. The refried brains were actually not bad and the handmade tortillas I got breakfast La Mexicana, and Horchata so I could've sworn on the menu. It said $11.95 and the lady wrote down on the check like 14 something and and the Horchata was five dollars so the bill with tax was over $20 for breakfastwith the price and everything. Truly amazing Mexican food! Great menu, flavors and authentic vibe. The homemade tortillas were so good! Think and never cracked under the taco pressure! I loved the michelada beverage. The hot choc was nice, I would've preferred it a bit spicy though. My cousin ordered a breakfast plate and hot choc. Place is really cute, the employees were super friendly. I got....well you already know, and he got chile verde. Portions were huge, food came rapidly. Taste was okay, price was fine, but these were not the tacos dorados I'm searching for.....The shells seemed like they were fried crispy earlier in the day and the chicken was added after .....sort of a Taco Bell style taco dorado. I want the whole thing fried together right before I eat it. So could be this is the way you like it, but it's not what I'm looking for. And despite the claim that the tortillas are handmade, they were not. Coulda been a Sunday night thing, but I was sad. On the way out we passed a little girl eating mole something. I am here from morning to have menudo to lunch time having a taco platter and everything in between. The homemade tortillas are really good, it's always piping hot. My boyfriend got the pozole which is a popular dish with really tender goat meat. Decent little mexican diner. They're open from 7am and serve breakfast every day; all breakfasts include your choice of huevos (rancheros, mexicanas, etc.), rice and beans, and homemade tortillas. I ordered the chilaquiles, which were enormous, but a little too soupy for my taste. The sauce was the kind I like -- a ranchero-style sauce with celery and green peppers -- but was a little undercooked and bland. Good rice and beans, large but flavorless tortillas; good salsa. Cameron had the birria, which he said was not as good as the version at Los Jarritos, although the meat was of higher quality. (I couldn't pin him down on whether that was a compliment or a criticism.) During the week, breakfasts go for $4.50 -- they're $6.50ish on the weekends -- and they have at least 2 soups every day. Weekdays it's caldo de res (beef) plus a daily special that could be pollo, ablondigas, or other favorites; weekends bring menudo, birria, and posole. This place is the bomb. I came here during covid 19 pandemic and they're still open with limited hours. I ordered their carne asada tacos for $7.95 but it was worth every savory bite. We were looking for a spot that we could grab some great food, and the Ethiopian place looked a little too kid-unfriendly for us to enter. I'm like c'mon! The Mission has never let us down! i spotted the sign from a couple blocks away, and made the executive decision to eat there. I was completely right. Luckily it was Tuesday, which at most places in America means horrible tasting tacos for a cheap price. Not here! I had a pork rib soup in a thick red sauce that tasted so good I licked the plate. And I told the kids it was ok to do it too. Two jarritos, three tacos, one quesadilla, and my special= $23 with tax and tip. Perfect way to spend a lunch in the Mission. **Special Bonus!!! No hipsters even looked in the windows, they just kept walking by. I could just picture one of those girlie pants wearing dudes twitching their mustache trying to say "Al- bone- dee- gahss". Which, might I add, are consistently blown away by the amazing dishes. La Quinta is the only Mexican food I trust, next to my Mom's. If you like crap like Chipotle, don't come here. Unless you're ready for some kickass authentic Mexican food. - They cook with LARD. Tasty, yummy lard. Vegans, stay away. - Fresh, handmade, thick tortillas. - If you care about the ambiance of a restaurant, that it doesn't look grimy, etc., this is not for you. - The food is cheap & portions are LARGE. Huge. No seriously, share your plate with someone or take half home for another meal. - Great for groups. Some dishes to highlight: Chilaquiles Machaca Huevos con jamon Chorizo con huevos Huevos Rancheros Birria (get the small bowl, the large one is HUGE) Menudo Pozole Tacos Burritos Tostadas Anything with carnitas! The carnitas are *so* good! I'm sure anything else on the menu will blow your mind, but I keep sticking to these favorites. I'm so grateful to have La Quinta in my 'hood. My homie took me out of the TenderNobb for breakfast yesterday, he's from the Mission.... Wow and Yum... Blue skys and teenage drug dealers greeted me as stepped out of the limo on Mission, trying to look hard, but more looking tired and sloppy than hard, we stumble past the early-rising vatos and stare down the waitress with that "i hella need coffee" look. Good thing for me I got spot-on facial expressions cause waitress didn't speak a spot of English. Thank gowd my buddy does. Walking in, i don't feel so bad about my appearance. Everyone else is looking tired and sloppy too... Not in a Tenderloin crackhead way, but more like some mid-point trucker stop kinda way... Never the less, i felt comfortable. Nice cornrowed waitress served us coffee and water and chips and salsa at like 8 in the morning... Coffee chips and salsa was kinda much for my mouth, so i forsake the coffee for a Corona. ahh, much better. La Quinta boasts breakfast specials from 7 till 11 a.m. - 5 dollars a plate for any of 6 or so selections including the following: chilaquiles huevos con choriso huevos rancheros machaca, which is what i had (a scrambled egg dish of carne asade with some bell peppers and onions) served with FRESHLY MADE corn tortillas, and beans and rice. The beans were seriously delish; proper home-style. One star deducted (probably should be more but what can i say, i like this place) because they still be using manteca (lard) to cook the food. I would have given the food 3 or 4 stars. The service however, made me feel obligated to give only 2. I have never experienced a server as rude as I did this morning at La Quinta. Another person reviewed and said "Cranky on the outside, soft on the inside." I didn't see the soft side to her. I called in advance to make sure they accepted credit/debit cards. She barked in my ear that they were accepted as long as the customer made a purchase of at least 15 dollars. Upon reading the menu, my friend and I discovered two great breakfast items for 8 dollars apiece. Obviously, this exceeded 15 dollars so I thought it would be safe to use my card. Throughout the meal, every time she brought something to our table we smiled and said please and thanked her. No response. This was starting to rub me the wrong way. After I we ate I approached the register, the server rolled her eyes and asked "Are you the one that called?" I told her that I was. She yelled, "I told you it was a 15 dollar minimum. What you got was 12." She was wrong. I made sure to look at the menu and what we ordered was labeled as 8 dollars each. I had to walk 5 blocks away to the bank to go withdraw cash for her (my friend sat in the restaurant so she knew we weren't walk outs.) There was absolutely no reason for her to treat us this way. It is almost embarrassing to admit, but I had my first burrito in the Mission this past weekend. After a morning session of me trying to learn tennis, boyfriend and I decided we'd burned a few calories and needed to take advantage of the weather. We popped over to the Mission and choose La Quinta based soley on where we had found parking. Lucky us! Both our lunches were huge and very flavorful, the service was definitely better than expected, the atmosphere (GOOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!) was fun, and cheap it was. I don't think we've spent $14 on lunch for both of us...ever. Minus one point for the fact that I saw the lady taking salsa bowls off each tables and dumping it into one big salsa tub, then refilling from there. I've NEVER been more disappointed to not eat the same thing twice, as the other two people I ate with ordered rancheros and it looked friggin excellent. I ordered a torta, which was totally good and all. Actually, it was pretty damn delicious too, chock full of avocado and seasoned chicken.
