First time at this location, Just happened to be in the area. I must say I was very impressed! Wasn't in the store for five minutes, I guess I had that look that I needed help (lol) .. A very friendly employee ( I wish I got his name) came up to me and asked me if I needed help . He then basically walked with me and helped me find everything that I needed! I was quite impressed. I stopped by for some Teflon tape to fix a faucet thread leak and asked a clerk to point me in the right direction of where to find it. Was told that there was "no such thing" and that it's called PTFE tape. Thanks for the arrogant deprecating comment! Should I have asked for polytetrafluoroethylene, which is the chemical name of the compound? While the brand may not be Teflon, the chemical identity is the same. I guess I won't be giving you any cellulose tissue if you ask me for a Kleenex since there is no such thing as Kleenex. read more

5 stars for the very nice and helpful employees that work here. We were assisted by three different people at this location on 4/30 at around 2:30pm. Time stamps because I regretfully didn't catch any of their names. I called ahead to ask if they could confirm that they had an item in stock at their store before I came by. I was assisted on the phone by a nice guy (around 2:10 I think) who looked up the item in their inventory. He then put me on a brief hold to check the aisle to ensure that the item was actually there, as was indicated. There was only one of it, and thankfully he offered to put it aside for me under my name at the customer service desk. When I got to the store, I was assisted by a nice lady who retrieved the item for me that the guy had set aside. She later ended up being the cashier that helped me when I checked out. Before checking out, another male employee patiently and diligently helped my dad find a specific micro bolt and nut to replace ones that were lost. He could have just led us to the aisle location for the item, but he took the time to help us look for and finally find the right sized pieces. We would have spent more time looking through the different containers holding these fasteners, without this employee's assistance. The store itself is small but seems decently stocked, with narrower than average aisles and a pretty small parking lot. Given the store's size, it's not easy maintaining 6 feet apart from other customers shopping. Staff were wearing masks, and the line to check out had markers on the floor to provide distance between customers waiting in line. Pricing (at least for items we were looking at) was higher than other online retailers, which was expected. Mainly wanted to say thanks again to the employees that were very pleasant and helpful to us today, on the small chance that they or the store management reads these Yelp reviews. You can pick up everything from paint, to lightbulbs - all the usual hardware supplies. What makes this location so great are the people. They are friendly, and always happy to assist you. I hardly write reviews but the cashier was extremely rude and dismissive. She took a quick look at my receipt and told me I can't return the screws I wanted to return because I purchased another local Ace store (which the return policy doesn't even mention) Instead of guiding me to someone who was more helpful she called the next customer over. I quickly asked where I can find more screws as this was my first time at this location and she shooed me away as if she was disgusted I even tried to return something. I understand she is a cashier and has to keep the flow but I hardly was taking up much time. This was horrible customer service and I will not be coming back to this location. I came in to buy a leaf blower I saw online along with finding out more information about a bath bar that doesn't need to be drilled in a wall. While looking within the bathroom section (if you could call it that) a customer rep asked if I needed help. Once I explained what I was looking for he explained, "nothing existed under ADAH." Before I could say I have never heard of ADAH but only of ADA, he left. I know ADA laws not never heard of ADAH laws? I didn't think anything of this interaction and started to look at what I really wanted to purchase, a leaf blower, as I was looking at the different models another customer rep asked if I needed help. I stated yes and stated how I bought a certain type but it broke within 2 years and now I wanted know what to buy. His response was "and your question is"... I stated how unfriendly they were in this store and left. Horrible service and will never shop there again! read more

First, the good. Considering it's such a small store, it does hit on a lot of most everything needed. It's a good, solid hardware store. Amazing what they cram in there. That leads to the first negative. Because everything is packed in so tight, makes for a difficult time getting down a few of the aisles. If the store is quiet at the time, best time to go. But when busy, it's a real challenge. The parking lot is a real source of problems, but the new lot helps. Shhh, it's a pay lot, but if I think I can get in and out quickly, I'll park in it without plugging meter! But, beware, it's Lafayette and the PD there will get you if they can! Other issue is stuff packed up so high on top shelves. It's kind of a pain because I need someone to help me reach stuff down. I don't dare use the ladders placed around the store. Did that once and I was reprimanded by one of the employees. But, it got someone to help me! Another issue is lack of staff. Every time I go in, it is hard finding someone to help when I need help. Maybe that's just my bad luck, but it's now at that point where I only go there when I know what I need. If I need help, I'll go somewhere else. Staffing issues also come up when you need something at their other store where they keep concrete and other large stuff. I bought some sand that I was told to go to this other building and someone would be down to load it. I waited about 30 mins -- it was nice getting a chance to cool off under the trees there -- and called the store. No one seemed to know about anything. A few minutes later someone came down. I started going to Ace because Home Depot is worse. I think it's time to find another store to go to. read more

I use this local Lafayette hardware store whenever I don't want to drive to Home Depot to buy parts and I didn't want to post a negative review but two negative encounters with the older Key maker with the red vest in the back made me post this review. The most recent purchase was buying a piece of PVC piping to repair a drain valve in my RV. He had to cut a foot off a bigger piece and all I asked if he used a hack saw to cut this. He rudely says " no I chewed it off (with his teeth) ". As a retired physician I know about heart valves but not an expert on plumbing valves. I just didn't need his condescending attitude that morning. Oh well, Home depot is looking pretty good about now ! I must say they do have a lot of employees and help there. read more

Rudest store manager ever! Returned a couple items with the store receipt and he refused to give me a gift card for store credit! I got a crappy little piece of paper that looks like a receipt instead. When I complained that I would lose it he couldn't care less. Stupid store policy that they cannot accommodate a long standing customer with a gift card for return purchases. I hate the tiny dangerous parking lot too. Bought 4 LED light bulbs for my kitchen at my "go to" Walnut Creek Ace store on Mt. Diablo Blvd. The cost was $12 each. I needed 2 more and WC was out, so I dropped by the Lafayette Ace. The exact same bulbs were $18 each. I received a slight break because they were having a 20% off bag sale. I spoke to the manager about the price discrepancy and he let me know that Ace Hardware stores are all independent and pricing is up to the individual stores. This policy is ludicrous. Check some of the other reviews for this store. Others will tell you the same thing about pricing. This store definitely enforces the "LaMorinda mark up"! read more

I purchased some deck stain on Monday . It was a two for one deal but was told I only needed one gallon which I purchased. I got home and figured out that I needed more because of the deck size. I called the store and explained the situation and let them I was unable to come back until Wednesday because of my giving respite care for a family member. They told me I had to return it the same day. I went to the store today, Wednesday, was told it wouldn't be a problem then was told they would not give me the second gallon. They did offer a five dollar future use coupon that I already had. Not so great on good will!!! I will not be make no any more purchases at the Lafayette Ace. Last week my left tail light decided to do battle with the garage door. Well, it won. My garage door is dented and the little punk even decided to chip off a piece of the wood frame! But the victory was not won without some heavy casualties. With a heavy heart I had to say goodbye to my tail light COVER and ready myself to part with major $$$ for a replacement cover in the future. I'm still searching for a replacement cover, but in the mean time I was able to grab red tail light tape for $2.99+tax from this AMAZING Ace Hardware. It was a rainy, overcast weekday morning and I wasn't in a rush so I decided to head to the very back corner of the store and just browse aisle by aisle. Inside the store there is a main aisle of sorts that forks off into two directions at the end. Well, I caught a glimpse of two sales associates on the left side so I quickly turned right hoping to avoid any contact and the possibility of having to ask for tail light tape... which just shouts, "Bad driver!" And for the record, I am not a bad driver. I am an Asian female driver. I know some of you think that the two are interchangeable and synonymous ... just be quiet. Anywho, just as I turned my back to them I heard the most dreaded phrase any 'just browsing' shopper can hear, "Can I help you find something?" Shoot man dang. I turned around and quietly asked, "Um... do you have any red tail light tape?" The guy paused for a moment, to CLEARLY call me a 'bad Asian female driver' in his head, before he said, "Yeah, I think we have some this way." To make matters worse, he walks back towards an aisle RIGHT NEAR the entrance. Did I forget to mention that "hardware store illiterate" is my middle name? In seconds he grabs me my red tail light tape of shame and I can only mutter a weak "Thank you". Now that I have recovered from my self-inflicted trauma... Well organized store. I purchase all of my christmas lights from this store every year. The Manager Bruce and his staff are always ready to answer any questions. Bruce knows more than anyone I have met in any hardware store. We purchase various items all year long for our local business. They also carry lumber and other building supplies at their Annex across the street to the west on Mt. Diablo. I often park at that the Annex when they are really busy. Without sounding repetitive. If I am having issues that I don't understand or can't come up with a solution, Bruce has always been able to help, or solve the problem. Long time customer. read more

My favorite hardware store. Been going for years. Bruce, the former manager, was so knowledgeable & had the nicest way about him..he trained his staff right. I still love that I get the best service here. The staff are so friendly...from the lovely greetings I get at the door, to plenty of staff to always offer help w/in seconds of me walking in. It has that small family town feel - I love that. The project I had recently was trying to create a stand, for folding tables in my garage. Manager David Hines, listened carefully to what I was hoping to create & helped me come to an idea & thereafter helped me collect the hardware wheels & paint I needed for the project. Yay! Love this place for it's one stop shop feel - from spray paint, new garden gloves, rat traps, cleaning supplies & key cutting. I cannot imagine anything less than 5 stars for these guys. I have been running to Ace Hardware in Lafayette, CA for every possible household problem a home owner might encounter. For a number of years. I agree with other posts that BRUCE can solve any problem you bring to him. He is a fountain of information. Odd ball situations. He has the solution. And today I returned with an artist's paint box and I had a 30 min. repair service by OLIVER who painstakingly replaced wing nuts and screws until the lid moved properly. THEY DO NOT DO ON SITE REPAIRS but the situation just got a little complicated this time. They want to get it right. All to say, I would be lost without my Ace in the hole. Sorry. I am just so happy I have a 'go to' place as wonderful as this ACE HARDWARE IN LAFAYETTE. CA !!! It restores my faith knowing some businesses still care about the customer. I really like the local Ace Hardware store in Lafayette. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. Anytime I walk in, I am greeted and asked if I need some help. They are very knowledgeable on many home and repair topics. Have really appreciated their assistance many times. Prices are a little higher that the big box stores, but save the trip to Walnut Creek Home Depot or Concord Lowes. I like supporting my local Lafayette businesses and will continue to do so. My past visits to Ace Hardware in Lafayette have not been great and customer support has always been lacking, that is, until today. Lloyd is a genius. Initially, a younger man, tried helping and he was good enough to hand me off to Lloyd. Issue I had was a broken license plate frame on my car and I needed a secure way to mount the frame onto the license plate holder. Lloyd walked me over to some mounting clips I could place behind the now oversized part of the mounting bracket on the car. Think of a wall anchor to secure a towel rod but this was affixed to the hard plastic license mounting plate on my car. In short, this clip that Lloyd led me too allowed me to securely afix my license and frame to the back of my car, thus, the police can now see my license plate. Without this clip option I would have had to get something machine made to allow the license to be mounted. Special thanks to Lloyd and the younger guy who handed me off. read more

Kind of a crap shoot.... The simple? Super expensive compared to online or big box options but hey, they're local. (To be fair they are paying rent on the main drag in Lafayette.) For being a relatively small store they are well supplied and often have one or two options for most of the obscure things I've needed in the past. The service is pretty hit or miss; more miss than hit. Also 3 of 5 stars. They'd make up ground for knowledge but lose it back for being snarky or rude or patronizing. And he recommend an impact drill would be better for what i was looking to get done. And some other products that would give it a better finish look. Dang it. Couldn't find my mini screwdriver set to change a battery on my car remote. Came to ace thinking one of those eye glass screwdrivers would work, but they didn't have the Phillips end. Asked a sales associate, Tully, and he asked what I needed, and told me he could help me. Tully took it apart, found the battery I needed, and I was on my way. While watching him dismantle the remote, I could only think of all the cursing I would be doing if I tried to do this on my own. Thanks Tully!!! read more
