Lunch yesterday was a plump tandoori chicken leg, two chicken samosas and a naan. I sat there to eat. I was the only lady there and as I have written in earlier reviews no women come here. The chicken was fresh and tasty but I could manage only half and had it packed. Now the naans here are not the delicate fragrant ones at fancy Indian restaurants. These are thick ones with or without ghee smeared on top (to request) meant for the lumberjack. Here these are in the form of cab drivers and delivery men who need sustenance and no froo froo cuisine. The gender neutral restroom is in my opinion the "Black hole of Calcutta." For men, it may be passable but for women absolutely verboten to enter. At a pinch, go to Kalustiyan where there is a restroom up the stairs. Ideally only should buy something before asking to powder one's nose. Service at Lahori is fine. read more

Chicken curry was average . Could have tasted better . My only issue is presentation. The y just mix all curries in rice and they are smashed all across the plate . Wish they give these curries in separate containers so we can enjoy the flavor of each curries . Another thing is they just reheat these curries . They are precooked . Sometimes with that , we wouldn't know if it is fresh . It tasted fresh though. Overall a good restaurant but giving them 3 stars . I don't think it is safe to eat here any more. Look at the health department violations that have gone up steadily and significantly in recent years. Most of my food seemed like it had spoiled somewhat, and my riata was so contaminated that it blew the lid off the container. I even put it back on and in an hour the container was inflated again, meaning bacteria or something was giving off gas. It's never been that clean inside the dining area, but now it is pretty shocking how gross it all is. Lahori Kebab Restaurant is an excellent place to dial up the spice, flavors and eat for quite the bargain. There is a difference in dining in versus takeout, which deserves some attention here. I visited on a Sunday evening and the place is not winning any style points for decor, but that is not why you come to such a place. It's all about the food and this is a very male dominated and Muslim place. Many of the patrons are Pakistani as far as I can guess, so this may be a change of pace for some people. Lahori is a place frequented by taxi drivers, which means the food better be quality, served in abundance, and it better taste good; reminiscent of homemade with all the spices of Pakistan. The use of oil in the cooking may be a bit much for some tastes, but overall I expect anyone with an open and experienced palate, will enjoy the food here, which, from all I am describing here, keeps the place "honest" with its regular patrons who are demanding from my observations. The chicken biryani is an easy pick for those less adventurous. This also means some people may feel out of place here. However, I was okay with this and welcomed the change of pace and palate. There are several tables with plastic cups and pitchers of water. Do not expect wait service, instead cue up in front of the counter having already decided what you will order. I ordered the Lahori Special Platter, which has a base of chicken biryani, with one of those tubular kebabs and a choice between lamb chop and chicken quarter. I opted for the former. It also comes with a salad of lettuce and mostly raw onions with a lemon wedge, which remarkably goes well to cut and counter the spices and oil. The spice driven flavors jump off your palate; cumin, tamarind, garlic, turmeric, peppers, and I don't know all I tasted. The kebab was actually on par with the grilled lamb chop, and goes well with the naan, along with the raw onions. The chicken biryani was on point. I highly recommend the Lahori Special Platter. It's filling and flavorful and represents what the frequent patrons demand. So I ordered a number of things to go, most notably the Mutton Curry. It was as tender as oxtail. Flavors off the charts. The naan is excellent too, along with the chicken quarters. The chicken quarters look as good as they taste. The tandoori platter was omitted in my to-go order, so I came back and the gentleman took care of it gratis as it should have been. This brings me to the point of to-go versus dine in: One is advised here to dine in over takeout. They will "forget" too many things in your to-go order and it will not be in the same quantity as dining in. I highly recommend the Lahori Special Platter and the Mutton Curry, with the Tandoori Platter coming in fourth, just behind the chicken quarters. The menu is extensive and far beyond what I tried. This is an authentic Pakistani restaurant. They have a large variety of dishes ready made, biryani, daal. Kebabs, Haleem, Nihari, Keema. Samosa's, Chicken curry, chicken tikka etc. The food is not bad, pretty good but I've had better. Nonetheless I would definitely go back for the food as it is the real deal. The first time we went there we got biryani and samosas. They both were decent. Not enough meat in biryani and way too many bones especially for the price. The second time we got Keema aloo, beef Nihari, shami kebab, Chapli kebab, Naan and roti. The kebabs were pretty good. The Nihari & Keema weren't bad. The roti and Naan were good, but definitely had better. The restaurant is small, has some seating. The gentlemen behind counter aren't too friendly and both times had an attitude. Also both times after I ordered my food and got the bag to leave I had to remind him that he missed a few dishes. I feel like it was done on purpose. Also as I was waiting in line both times he took orders of people who walked in after me. I got the feeling that if you aren't of his culture they give you an attitude. Came in for dinner about hour and a half ago and it was delicious. I ordered the Lahori Special Platter which had tons of food. Rice was amazing as well as the kebab my lamb chop a bit on the dry side but still very good. The guy working the counter was very nice and I was the only non-Paki eating there so usually places where people from their own culture eat tend to be better. Loved it!!! So having ordered delivery from this place on DoorDash, everything looked just like ordering from an Indian restaurant. I got the Goat Biriyani ($14). It had some very interesting spices, but it was not to my liking. May be that I was expecting it to taste like the ones I get from a typical Indian restaurant, but idk. I also got Rice with Chicken Tikka Masala Dinner Special ($10). I was expecting a container of Tikka Masala sauce with the chicken and rice in a separate container, but it was both combined as one and I definitely would have like more sauce to really drench the rice. Our favorite Indian place was closed down the road so we walked into 3 other places before we found Lahori Kabab. We ordered chai, Sikh kebab, chicken samosa, and veggie samosa. It was really good. I like the chicken samosa the most which is surprising for me. The chai comes I sweet so you can flavor to your specific tastes. The chef was really kind and very hospitable. I would definitely come back. It is really clean here. The only complaint: I hate when places to eat play the news. The news was on and there weren't many people there so it seemed loud. Randomly stopped by for dinner here after a night out to see the tree at Rockefeller. My dad and I are huge on Indian/Pakistani food, but for some reason this didn't hit the spot. The place was kind of run down and you wouldn't go there for the ambience. I would strongly advise against using their bathroom. The food was a bit on the blander side for me just because I'm used to whole lot of spices in my food. It wasn't bad, but just not anything extraordinary. We ordered the biryani, meat samosas, lamb chops, fish, and kababs. I recall liking the fish the most. I would assume it's a good place to grab take-out. Dining there is also very casual. They provide you with styrofoam plates and cups. I see that they're temporarily closed and hope they can improvise when it comes to ambience and food once they open up again. read more

So it's been almost ten years since I've been back to this NY neighborhood. I'm so pleased to note the changes to the area. Before it was a little quieter, not as many stores and restaurants, but now, now it's a bustling thriving area full of Indian clothes stores, specialty food stores and a great variety of ethnic restaurants. I walked in here after seeing the Bangladeshi, Pakistani, halal sign in the window. Yearning for some really good food, this place hit the spot! Not sure how to review this place. In some ways its everything I love. Blue collar food in a black tie city. Which is awesome. The place is grungy and dimly lit. There's a big display case up front with hotel pans full of curries and different kinds of kababs and samosas. They're a nice lady behind the counter. There's a steady stream of cab drivers walking in and out, occasionally permeated by an american who's looking for an authentic experience. The prices are dirt cheap by city standards. With meals ranging from $6 to $15 dollars. Many items are a la cart. However, the food isn't incredible. Its oily. Its a little lacking in heat from a temp standpoint. But its good. Its solid. And its not your every day meal if you are willing to venture out into the more interesting dishes. They also have some pretty interesting kabobs for like $2 ea. Worth a try. Not sure I'll come back unless I have a serious hankering for Pakistani food. But honestly its just as good as the $20 spots that share the same corner. read more

One of the many places on Lexington avenue, this one is quite unique. The food is Pakistani/Bangladeshi. I was with a few others and we all got the non-veg platter. I got the Kofta/Egg (Monday special) with some other Chicken Curry with some Roti. The food is warmed in a microwave like many of the other upstairs/downstairs places I have been to. It could have been a bit hotter though The kofta was pretty good and the chicken curry was fine as well though it had some gristle. Both could have used a bit of spice and it was a bit more oily than I like. I tried a kebab that is an option for the non-veg meal from someone else and it was quite good. The roti was a bit dry but overall fine. I also got a rose milk after which was a bit sweet but it was still pretty good. The guy in front is nice. This place is fine. I wouldn't recommend it over many of the other places in the area but if you want to look for a different type of lunch, it's not bad at all. read more

This is one of the best Pakistani restaurants I've been to in a long time. Went with my family on New Year's Day, Ordered biryani, Chaplin kebab, achari chicken and chicken makhni with naan. The food is great. Not overly spicy. The spices are just right. I see a person on here saying the food is too bland for their taste...what you want a damn ulcer or something? Seriously when people say they want extra spicy, I'm like go ahead and get sick because you will get an ulcer or acid reflux. Seating is very clean. This is how Pakistani food should be....not overly spicy like a villager "pindu" wants staff is great too, very friendly and hospitable. Awful food; even worse service. Had the mixed platter with spinach and mutton and potato and eggplant. Spinach and mutton came without mutton but two small bones w/o meat. Potato and eggplant portion was very small and not very good. At the register I was overcharged and I had to be refunded for the difference. This place was amazing. They had incredible Haleem and Keema and their Tandoori Roti was the best in the city. But they've closed down. I called them once and the guys said that they would open in 4 months, it's been 4 months and they still haven't opened. BRING BACK LAHORI PLEASE!!! I came here for a lunch special and ordered the $10.95 deal ($12 with tax) which came with tandoori chicken, a chicken sekh kabab, white rice, naan, and some brown slop with what appeared to be tiny beans that I am unfamiliar with. This is a very tiny, and dim restaurant, but it seemed relatively clean, and the staff was polite. There were two televisions tuned to channels in Urdu, and there are pitchers of water on every table, much appreciated by the likes of me as I drink a ton with my meals. You drink said water from disposable plastic cups, not that I mind that one bit, but I'm just trying to impress upon the reader that high-end this is not. As for the food, I found the tandoori chicken to be positively excellent. It was very juicy and extremely spicy hot, which I love. The white rice was cooked to perfection, important because improperly cooked rice is an inexcusable offense. The naan was decent, a little crispy for my liking, as I prefer a light and fluffy naan better, but I appreciate how you have a choice of whole wheat or white. The chicken sekh kabab I didnt particularly enjoy, as I thought it was a bit bland, but the "brown slop with what appeared to be tiny beans" was pretty good (whatever it was) and had a nice kick to it. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Lahori Kabab and will likely return some day. I love that in NYC the smallest, cheapest looking places can have the best food. A friend introduced me to Lahori Kabab and I am very thankful she did because I'm not sure I would have noticed this tiny nondescript place among all the Indian competition in the neighborhood if she hadn't. Lahori Kabab it is small, bland looking and yummy...if you need to know anything more after that read on. I am not be the best person to identify authentic Indian food vs an Americanized version, but I know people who can spot the difference and when the opportunity presents itself I intended to take them and test my hypothesis because this little hole in the wall spot is a location I would not be ashamed to point them towards. Lahori is no frills...just good taste. The food is re-heated in a microwave and served on disposable dishes. There is a constant loop of Bollywood musicals playing in the back and if you want any more atmosphere then that - keep walking. I would like to give a special yelping shout out to their channa masala, the chicken tandoori and the garlic naan (because really what is Indian food without the naan?) plus I went back for the aloo palak and the chicken makhni. So, the next time you are barely out of your pajamas and want a hearty authentic Indian meal (this scenario does happen to New Yorkers) put on your clogs, pull your hair into the scrunchy that you don't admit you own and head to Lehori. read more

There is something magical and lovable about this place. The food is pretty good - the kebabs are definitely the way to go. A lot of the food is reheated in a microwave, and this would bother me at almost every other restaurant, but it is part of the charm here. They also have the pink greatness that is Kashmiri chai, and this you must order. The place reminds me a lot of the restaurants I went to in India (I know it's Pakistani, I just haven't been to Pakistan!). A lot of the clientele is cab drivers speaking Urdu, and Pakistani news is always showing. The newstand outside has copies of the Pakistan Times. It's probably about as close as you can get to being in Pakistan without actually being in Pakistan. My only tremendous issue with this place is that they have a clock that says "Hitler" on it. I don't understand why, and I really am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt about it, but someone should tell them it's not okay. read more

This place has gone down hill apparently. I've been here in the past maybe a total of 3-4 times & I never had a problem til now. I ordered a platter but asked if instead of plain rice if I could get biryani. He said it's a $3 charge. I said that's fine. So I ordered biryani, chicken tikka masala and daal. I asked if he can make everything spicy. He said no so I asked for chili peppers on the side. After a good 10 mins he presented me my packed order. I double checked about the chilis. He said "oh.." as in oh I forgot, and grabbed some & wrapped it in foil. When I got home, I opened up my food to find PLAIN RICE. I do not understand how he forgot I asked for biryani, CHARGED me the extra $3, then FORGOT to pack me biryani?????????????? How do you do that???? I was speaking to him in Hindi also, so it's not like he misunderstood! I thought about calling to complain, but it being a desi place they wouldn't give a crap and I was too tired & starving.
