The beef was once again way over cooked, there was no flavor of basil and the dish was very small! We ordered garlic and ginger chicken as well, and that dish we both liked. Untraditional in so many ways! Don't get me wrong - I love hole in the wall Thai places but this place exceeded my expectations in terms of flavor and uniqueness. A lot of the dishes are one step above the usual. For example, the vegetable dumplings ($5.50) have a green exterior (most likely made from green tea) with the filling as complex as a dumpling can get - sweet, salty, crunchy, soft, and the perfect dose of peanut for peanut lovers out there. The drunken noodles ($9) were 3 chili spicy indeed! I was blowing steam out of my ears and nose and sweating like a pig. Even the thai iced tea came in a cute little hand-carved mug. Some dishes are more fusion-y than others. The Chicken wraps ($5.50), for example, tasted a lot like chicken tacos for the carb fearing people. The best ending to a meal: $6 desserts that boasted of black sesame ice cream and molten chocolate cake and the layered creme brulee with hints of coffee and vanilla, eaten with a wood spoon for extra earthy flavor. you can't get dessert this good for $6. the presentation and quality of the food is excellent. This ain't your mom and pop thai place though, so be forewarned of long lines and interesting flavor combinations. read more

Not sure what happened since this restaurant first opened. Now it unfortunately has "C" health rating... that's when things get pretty gross, like you really have to try to get this low of a rating. But ugh, the $12.50 lunch special is such a great deal. Today my Thai food craving was so strong I decided to step inside. For appetizers, I got the chicken wrap. Good concept, and many places execute this well, but not here. Iceberg lettuce?? This dish needs regular leaf lettuce. Chicken in curry broth?!? Please replace with drier meat. Sauce flying everywhere over the table and my clothes when I bite. For the entree, I got the cashew vegetable wok with tofu. Fine dish, but nothing special. Even if health rating gets back to an acceptable level, something dramatic needs to happen to the menu to convince me to return. read more

I really liked this place. Land is in a cute area of the Upper West Side that has a bunch of restaurants and bars (Dead Poet is right next door). They had both indoor and outdoor seating. We waited 15 minutes on Tuesday night for a table. Once seated, they took our orders right away. To split, we ordered a tofu pad Thai and a green curry chicken (which we got mild). We also ordered two sides of rice and the green veggie side. The Pad Thai was pretty sweet, even for me. I enjoyed it since we ordered a spicy second entree, but I don't think this really stands on its own. The green curry chicken was excellent - it had a lot of flavor and was definitely flavored to our palates (I sometimes have an issue ordering Thai food an describing the amount of spice I like - probably my fault, but sometimes the food comes out with too much spice and sometimes with no kick at all). The greens side was awesome - a kick of garlicky flavor. The portions were big - we didn't finish the two entrees we split and I had enough for dinner the next night. I'm glad we found this place because there aren't a ton of places love on the UWS. I would definitely go back. That being said, I would also go back to Senn Thai Comfort Food, which is equally good and basically right next door. Both great options for UWS Thai. read more

This had to be one of the worst dining experiences of my life. My boyfriend and I arrived for dinner on a Saturday night at around 9:30pm. They told us the kitchen closed at 10:00pm. We said we would order before then and that we had a friend meeting us by we would order for him. They said ok and seated us. By 9:45ish 9:50 we place an order for a ton of food. It all came out out within a reasonable amount of time but by 10:15 they stared rushing us told us our friend wouldn't be able to come in. The waitress came over 2 or 3 more times rushing us reminding us of the time. Finally waitress brought over to go containers for all our food and and our drinks (wine and a leech martini), while we were still eating! If you want people out the door by 10:15/10:30 than stop taking orders at 9pm! I had spilled my martini she replaced it and charged me for both. It was a disgusting experience. I have never in my life been rushed out the door of a restaurant like this in my life. I would NEVER go back. We were out the door before 10:30 we didn't finished eating or drinking anything the food was still piping hot! Do not come to this rude little restaurant! read more

I stumbled upon Land as I walked up and down the street in the search for a delicious meal. The lunch special is one appetizer and one entree for $11. I was a bit concerned about the serving size of appetizer and entree for that price but after the meal, I was very full. Definitely got more bang for my buck. For my appetizer, I ordered the chicken wrap and pad Thai with shrimp for my entree. The chicken filling was drenched in spicy chili sauce and so the taste was overwhelming. I had a bite of my friend's Land salad and I wish I went with that instead. The pad Thai was delicious and filling; I recommend this dish. Indoor and outdoor seating are available. Came in on a cold, windy afternoon and was happy to find this warm, cozy and inviting restaurant. My hot green tea arrived in a beautiful cast iron teapot and I ordered a wok vegetable medley with chicken and a Tom yum soup, which I was assured could be made non-spicy. The waitress must have understood 'non-spicy' to mean 'medium' instead of 'mild' because the soup was way too spicy and I had to take ice cubes from my glass of water (a total faux pas) to tame the spice and stop my eyes from getting teary. Thankfully, the chicken entree was delicious and I ended up cleaning the dish completely! I'm deducting one star for the spice level on the soup. I had the opportunity to finally try Land probably after walking past it more times than I can count. Since there's a slew of restaurant choices all along Amsterdam Avenue it seems almost impossible that I'll get through all them within one lifetime. We must've gotten the last table available because the place was PACKED. It may have just been the after hours work rush, but I'd definitely suggest getting here a little earlier if you're looking to be seated immediately (the restaurant does NOT take reservations). Our server was extremely accommodating and gave us some time to look over the menu once we had been seated. When it was time to order I ended up going with the Pad See Ew with Beef ($14). I had read that this was EXTREMELY filling dish and I'm glad to be able to confirm that. Definitely order this if you're looking for something that'll hit the spot and leave you feeling full well after you've finished your meal. The space itself definitely has more of a casual ambiance. The restaurant is laid out long and thin, so just know that the tables may be close enough for you to perfectly hear the conversations going on on either side of you. However, it was definitely comfortable enough that we were able to enjoy our meal without any real issue. Overall this is definitely is a great spot for casual Thai food in the UWS. I'd recommend it if you're looking for authentic Thai cuisine in a "no frills" relaxed setting. read more

And then we ordered cashew shrimp from the wok menu and a crabmeat fried rice. Let me tell you, the fried rice was OVERCOOKED, with NO TASTE. The only thing you can taste was the rice, there was no crabmeat at all, I dug around to find it and there was not a one piece. So I ended up not even eating the dish. Mind you that ball of just overcooked rice was 18$ And the cashew shrimp was bad as well. The shrimp was not cleaned properly and the sticky rice we paid extra for had no taste and was just like regular cooked white rice. Overall a TERRIBLE experience, do not recommend this restaurant. Stopped in here for dinner at around 8pm. I ordered the pad Thai shrimp and the food was tasty and came quickly. Ambience was pretty cozy too. The problem is that at first the waitresses were nice to us until they decided we needed to hurry up and leave. They pointedly asked if we intended to buy dessert or not, and as soon as we declined, they gave us the check. When we didn't produce our credit cards fast enough, the server actually outright said "can you just pay right now" and shoved the credit card reader thing in my face?? The restaurant was empty except for our table and one other guy so it's not like we were taking up a table during a busy time. I asked mild spicy for the salad and it was perfect for me. But if you can't eat spicy food at all, I don't recommend papaya salad. The Pad thai was pretty good with well cooked noodles and tasty sauce. I was just disappointed that it didn't have much Tofu in it(the menu says it has Tofu but I couldn't find any). Everything tasted great. The Papaya Salad was lacking some flavor, but everything else made up for that. The espresso and pistachio ice creams were OMG so good. Black sesame ice cream tasted like any other Asian dessert place you go to. I can't even begin to explain how great the market fish was. Larb duck - YUM, interesting flavor. Shrimp Lemongrass soup - mmm. Dumplings - aaah. We each paid around $60 each, including tips and we were full and happy. Now, we ordered a lot, so your bill may be significantly less. My sister's apartment was nearby and we always made a visit to Land Thai. Everyone is so friendly and the wait usually isn't too long. We always start with their lychee margaritas and typically get their dumplings. Their Pad Thai and Green Curry Chicken are always delicious.
