Came here for lunch on a rainy Saturday. They had an extensive lunch menu with a good variety of fixed priced options. I had the fried tofu and spicy shrimp with rice. The fried tofu was delicious- crispy but not greasy. The highlight of the meal. The shrimp were served in a yellow curry sauce that was tangy and not too spicy. The shrimp had shells on, which made for a very messy experience. I liked the presentation of the Thai iced-tea in a tiki-type tumbler. Very bummed NO vegan and NO vegetarian options unlike most Thai places which are accommodating, Land is completely not. I also asked whether a few dishes were vegan and was told "No. Nothing here is vegan. Everything has fish sauce." I asked if anything could be made without fish sauce and the manager said no. You hope that it was the pad see ew and chicken pad thai, but you would also be happy to eat a curry. It really doesn't matter. What matters now is that food is coming. So you collapse onto the couch, exhausted, drained, when you get a phone call. It's late - who could it be? None other than Land Thai. This is the brilliance of Land Thai - they've realized you made a mistake in your order - because they know and recognize you. Well, your name. You always order delivery and this is for takeout - are you sure about that? They're more than happy to deliver. You thank them for catching that and begin to wonder if you have a problem. It's not like you order Land Thai all the time. Just two or three times a month. Of course, you don't really get takeout from anywhere else. Why would you? I mean, Land Thai is certainly the best restaurant nearby which delivers. But maybe it would be nice to have some variety. You think about calling them back. As your thoughts whirl, ego spins, and fingers flick across the phone screen you hear a buzzer. They're here already. Problem or not, it's too late to call back. I decided to treat myself to a birthday lunch today. I was very excited as I never buy lunch out and was felling so fancy! I'd specifically ordered the meal without any garlic (significant food intolerance). I opened the food once I was at work and took a bite and UH OH, realize it is literally covered in garlic . Like every inch of the entree has tiny bits of garlic all over it; no way to remove it and try to avoid digestive catastrophe. I called to ask/complain and they said "the sauce has it in it already" and I asked could they make me a new one without garlic and they said no. So I can't eat any of my birthday meal that I have just paid for. How do you not follow the order request, refuse to make new food, and then not offer a refund? I came here with a bunch of friends. It's quite a small place so tables are a bit cramped, but it works considering it's NYC. I got the charred squid wok. Very tasty, spicy as described in the menu, and very flavorful. Overall, the dish was just right! I also tried the salmon fried nice which was tasty. The portions are actually normal sized and not jumbo US sizes, so +1 for that, and prices were reasonable! Now, the reason I'm not willing to give them more than 3 stars is the service! First, I arrive at the restaurant and mention that we're a party of three and my friends are 10 minutes away. Despite there being an empty table available, she refuses to seat me, and despite requesting to be seated, she leaves me standing cramped up by the door considering how tiny the space is (it was quite cold outside). So no points there. Also, as with many other tiny restaurants in Manhattan, the check was brought to us literally the minute we finished our plates, felt way too rushed and ruined the experience. read more

I love the food. I have come here for two birthdays already. They make the best Green Curry Chicken and their shrimp appetizer was amazing. The Atlantic salmon & the fried calamari were all crowd pleasers at my table. My only complaint about this place is the service. For example, no reservations. You can't sit at the table and wait for one extra person even though the 5 other people are already here. And they have a tendency to rush you, even when they're not packed. I had the Wok seared squid and it had 3 lightning bolts for spiciness. I got it with 1 lightning bolt and let me tell you it was spicy enough, but I've never been much of an explorer. It was delicious, the squid was fresh and tasty, delivery was prompt - they quoted a 30 minute delivery but it was more like 20 (I think, I had already downed 3/4 of a bottle of vino verde so my sense of time was skewed, but the food really was delicious.) My dinner companion had the pad thai and it was equally as delicious. Their online menu was fancy and modern with beautiful pictures. This is the real reason I ordered the squid. Just, FYI. Not to be overlooked is the fact that our entire meal came out to a lovely $26.00, and we even had an appetizer. Granted, we didn't sit in the restaurant proper, so I cannot - as an honest reviewer - comment on the ambiance, service, what have you. After completing various dishes here I noticed one thing this Thai restaurant (I've been to a fair share) lacks. It's the use of all the spices that makes thai food have amazing aromas and taste. Land is good, but no where near great. We started with some crispy calamari and chicken galangal soup. The calimari was a little greasy and got quite soggy halfway through but was seasoned well. The galangal soup was very underwhelming. It tasted like canned coconut milk mixed with a little bit of vinegar and sugar. It didn't have all the spices and leaves I'm accustomed to in coconut soup and it was way too sweet. This is actually my favorite soup and a must order whenever I eat Thai. The lack of execution on this alone was a solid precursor for the rest of the meal. For our entrees we had Wok Cashew Nut with Shrimp and Crab fried rice. The crab fried rice was quite generic and you could barely notice anything 'crab' about it. The wok cashew shrimp dish was just alright also. The shrimp was a little under seasoned but the dish actually was better when the rice was mixed in. We ended with some pork buns which were nothing to rave about. It reminded me a little bit of a Vietnamese sandwich except wrapped in a bun instead, with a just okay tasting peanut sauce. I had Ippudo's pork buns a few days before these so I was naturally underwhelmed. Land is albeit decent, however, when I eat Thai, I'm looking for that great mixture of sweet, tangy, spicy, savory explosion you don't get with other foods. Land did not deliver, however, the food was just decent enough to not write off completely. I ordered Pad Thai and it literally came with peanuts on the side (not a fan). The appetizer trio was really good. The Pad Thai was not that great. I've been here several times over the past few years and I think it's some of the best Thai food on the UWS. The food is consistently good and their lunch prix fixe menu is a good deal -- $11 for an appetizer and entree, with many choices, including several options for vegetarians. Most recently, I had the steamed pork and shrimp dumplings to start, and the green curry with chicken as my main course. Both were good! If you like a little spice but not a ton, keep in mind that you can ask the kitchen to adjust the spice level on many of their entrees. Land is a tiny spot with not many tables, and there's often a wait on weekends. When I've been for weekday lunches, they're always busy but usually have at least a couple free tables. Because the space is small, I wouldn't recommend Land for groups much bigger than four or five people. read more

Out-land-ishly good. There, now that I got my pun out of the way, let's talk about the food! Hands down one of my favorite Thai places in all of New York - consistently tasty, efficient with quick, friendly service, and the $8 lunch special is hard to turn down. The vegetarian dumplings - slick little dumplings with spinach wrappers are nutty and flavorful. The drunken noodles are legit spicy as is, the pepper squid comes as tender tendrils of squid in an addictive peppercorn sauce. The green curry is rich with coconut flavor and also delightfully spicy. Always remember to add the Thai iced tea - it's a little pricey at $4, but the quantity is good (compared to Thai Market) and the adorable clay jar just makes everything taste better. read more

We were looking for a dinner spot after church on Sunday, and Yelp pointed us to LAND. I'm always in the mood for Thai food, so this was perfect. And my, it is hands down one of the best Thai experiences I've ever had! They really outdid themselves with the atmosphere of this small joint. It is an intimate spot with some modern Asian decor. The wall on the right is lined with tables that lead up to the kitchen and bathroom. Each of the dishes come on different modern looking dishes. My green curry was AMAZING!! Even though I asked for it as mild and it came out fairly spicy, the flavor was so so good. It had green beans and eggplant in it that added some great texture. Also, the chicken was cooked PERFECTLY. You know how sometimes chicken in thai dishes can be dry? Well, this was nice and tender. My friend also got a basil fried rice that was a decent sized portion. I can't remember what other folks ordered because I was so caught up with how amazing my dish was. This place really isn't "cute" or "fancy" like people have been describing it to be. It's really just a narrow space of tables pushed right next to each other (cafeteria style almost) alongside some wooden walls. This is one of those places where they won't seat you until your whole party is there (makes sense considering how small it is). The dishes are a couple dollars more than normal, but everything was good-we had the mix of appetizers, beef, curry, and pat see ewe. Mmm! We also had their lychee martini and pomegranate mojitos. My friend's wasn't strong enough, so she asked them to pour in some more alcohol, which they did. Sweeet. Or stronnng. This is one of the first places that I Land at when I am visiting NYC. Have had about 4 dinners here over the past few years and they have never let me down on food quality. The chicken with veggies and seabass last time was all very good and reasonable value. This place is Small with a capital S. They have an outdoor patio and that helps a bit during the better weather. It's fun to sit outside on Amsterdam with all the peeps walking by... So if you come during dinner hour--don't come too hungry--they may give you a multi-hour wait notice. But if you go to dinner early at 5 or later at 9, you really should slide in. Dress is casual--if you sit outside it will be on an uncomfortable folding type chair and shaky table. You could get on the list at peak dinner hour and drink nearby while you wait--there are tons of bars. Service is fast, efficient and matter-of-fact. They won't wrap with you--be ready to order when they come back to the table. I will see them again on my next visit to New York New York. read more

My mother would smack me with a wooden spoon if she knew that I was enjoying Thai food on Amsterdam Ave. Let me tell you what this man has done here. He has obviously been indoctrinated into the very key elements to Thai cuisine, and he has extracted those flavors (along with his wife I am told)...and then using his very perceptive palette, has imagined new ways of preparing the dishes in ways that showcase the same tastes that are so dear to us Thai people. Let me begin by talking about the vegetable dumplings. Most "farangs" that venture into a Thai restaurant NEVER order mushroom dumplings because it just doesn't sound exotic. They instead go for chicken satay and fried tofu with peanut sauce. Carefully home crafted Thai style dumplings, with a plump, beach ball shape with a beautiful and consistent spiral pattern twist along the outside is so dear to our Thai hearts. Mr. Bank, you have mastered this! The wrapping was unique, and soft. The contents were minced, had a new consistency I was not used to, but the flavor was the very same flavor I enjoyed as a child, but richer, smoother. The minced garlic aftertaste even hit me. I think I've already said enough. I was in love with those dumplings. With that said, the bamboo curry was very close to what my mother makes at home, full of flavor, rich with coconut milk and basil, but thicker and more suited for an American taste. I like it. The rice was moister than other Asian restaurants, which is the way a lot of us do it at home. My date had the lemongrass chicken, which was also good. I came for dinner on Friday, 5 November 2010 with 2 other friends, and we had about a 1-hour wait for a table. No problem, we put our name in and left a number. Then proceeded 2 blocks up to a Peruvian restaurant to have a to-go snack while we waited for Land Thai Kitchen ;) We got back and our table was about ready. We ordered the following dishes (I didn't keep the itemized receipt like usual, so the prices per dish are off memory): Vegetable Dumplings ($6, shitake mushroom, sweet corn, tofu, spinich, peanut, garlic chip and sesame soy sauce) - We saw other tables eating this and ordered it... wow. I love the gluten wrap and the stuffing was amazingly flavourful. I wanted to order another! Green Papaya Salad ($7, julianne green papaya, cashew nuts, tomato, long bean, thai chili and lime) - This was an average green papaya salad. I wanted more of the vegetable dumplings. Pad See Ew w/ Beef ($13, flat rice noodles, egg, chinese broccoli, cauliflower, yellow bean and dark soy sauce) - This noodle dish is a bit sweeter than other places, but still very good. I do love wide rice noodles! Wok Charred Squid ($13, chili-garlic puree, thai basil, sugar snap pea and black peppercorn sauce) - This dish was pretty flavourful, though the squid was a little on the chewy side. I liked the veggies that came with it. Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass ($19, on top of vegetables) - This was one of the specials. The sea bass was a bit over-cooked, but just by a little bit. The actual piece of fish was a bit on the stingy side. It was good but I wouldn't order it again because the value isn't very good. Perfect place for a intimate date at an off hour. Decor is lovely. This place is tiny and NOT good for groups as most tables seat 2. The restaurant is long with tables only on one side mostly. Staff is great. Presentation is great. Prices for entrees with meat run above $18 but the rice and noodles are $10-$14. Taste wise it was good but not impressive...definitely not in my top thai places. The flavor is a bit too americanized, not authentic enough for my tastes. Also the fact that pineapple fried rice is NOT on the menu upset me as I feel this is a typical thai dish. They did however have curry fried rice and chicken fried rice but I didnt feel it was the same. I personally had the garlic shrimp which was good but I have had a similar dish at a fast food joint before. The rice is jasmine according to the menu but it is stickier than jasmine rice...almost like japanese/korean rice. Overall I enjoyed my dinner but wouldnt see this restaurant as a destination. I asked when I ordered if they could tone it down, and the waiter said it wouldn't be a problem. The dish I received was barely edible for me and I can usually handle my spice pretty well (for a white girl). A shame, because I wanted to enjoy the flavors - I get the feeling they forgot. I'm a Thai food fanatic, and as much as I love the hole-in-the wall spots that serve massive portions in mom and pop surroundings, sometimes I want something a little more refined. The answer? Land Thai Kitchen. Really great, bistro-esque interior with lots of natural sunlight and mirrors to open up the space. I came for lunch, and was thrilled to see they offered a pre-fixe menu for NINE DOLLARS. Nine dollars for a two course Thai lunch is pretty much heaven for me. Portions are definitely small, but brilliantly executed. I highly recommend the green curry to spicy food fans. Can't wait to come back here again-maybe to try the dinner menu! read more

We got the sea bass special with Thai basil, chili, japanese eggplant and FRESH green peppercorns still on the stem - best thing I've tasted in a month. However having lived in Thailand for many years growing up, I wouldn't recommend Land If you are looking for that real thai local type of authentic taste. Though they do have some menu that is pretty close to the local taste, but overall I'd call it "fusion". The perfect time to try out this place is around their lunch hours, for lunch prix you can get your choice of appetizer and the main dish for mere $9. The only place I use for Thai (NB: I've only ordered delivery, never eaten at the restaurant) I have tried just about every Thai place on the UWS, and this is the only place that can get Drunken Noodles right! They happily substitute meat with tofu (which is always fresh and never soggy) and See Ew noodles for the ones they regularly use. And word of caution: they are not afraid to spice it up!!
