Larsen's lives up to the vaunted expectation for Danish pastry. A few years back I walked by a bakery in my ancestral hometown of Hjörring, Denmark. Wafting from this bakery was the best aroma, to this very day, I've ever experienced. I didn't detect any baking smells in Larsen's on this sunny Saturday morning, but my jaw dropped at the huge selection of candies, donuts, rolls, breads and pastry. I quickly zoned in on the twists. On this day, they were offering cinnamon, cinnamon plum, cinnamon custard and cinnamon cream cheese twists. There was a misunderstanding when I asked for one cinnamon and one cinnamon custard twist. Unbeknownst to me, if you ask for "one", to them that means a loaf (which is about a dozen individual twists). So behind the counter and out of my line of sight, the gal had boxed up two huge loaves of each of my requests. Gulp! I explained that I didn't want the entire loaf, and the gal told me that they didn't sell individual twists. The girl explained that this was a common misunderstanding. Still, she was nice and sold me some twists individually. But anyway, how were the twists? They were wonderful, simply wonderful! Soft and fresh, with the perfect level of frosting, sugariness and cinammon. And I especially loved the gooey delight of the cinammon custard twist. Yes, yes, yes!! Bonus points for selling milk to go along with the pastries. Of course, coffee is sold here - being that coffee and cake (pastry) is a cherished Danish tradition. And it's pretty cool too, that even though the Scandinavian feel of Ballard is steadily diminishing, places like Larsen's are still around to remind of this neighborhood's heritage. read more

I've been here several times before but recently, I had the best visit. I took two friends of mine here who had never been before and it was like visiting Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Both drivers were able to find parking spots within easy walking distance, the place wasn't packed on a rainy Sunday afternoon, AND there were several open tables! Everyone was a winner! The folks behind the counter were very friendly and patient, describing the goodies-behind-the-glass and answering questions. One friend bought herself a chocolate mousse in an edible cup made of almonds. The Larsen's guy suggested to her that she break off pieces of the cup to use as a edible spoon - this was a successful operation. My other friend selected a slice of their simple white cake with layers of delicate lemon curd enrobed in marzipan. My friends enjoyed their pastries SO much that before we parted ways, they purchased treats for their respective partners. I bought a pair of Napoleonhattar (small biscuit cookies filled with a ground almond centre) and a lovely elephant ear stuffed with a cinnamon apple filling. My husband was pleased with his teatime treats. If you have Scandinavians in your world (or anyone that likes sweet baked treats), come here. They have legit Kringle and you can buy marzipan, lefsa, or some smorkaka. You can buy beautifully iced Julekaka (bread with candied fruit, raisins, and cardamom), pfeffernusse (rum-soaked spice cookies dusted with powdered sugar), and buttery, flaky Birkes! They have a variety of Spandau with different flavours like apricot, cherry, custard, and raspberry. If you don't like those, you can find cheese or chocolate croissants, bear claws and cinnamony snail danishes! They also have a rack with day old items in the corner by the refrigerator. After living abroad in Denmark, I was soooo excited to come check out Larsens! A lot of the stuff is generic American bakery stuff - understandable since it is a bakery in America. They do have quite a few danish pastries (wienerbrød) though, including the one thing I've missed more than anything: snails!! They are made of the traditional flaky danish pastry dough and spiraled. They didn't have any normal ones left, so I got black and white which is the same thing but with both chocolate and white frosting instead of just the white. Man, this stuff is what dreams are made of. It felt so good to get to eat one again. This thing was amazing! If you want a taste of denmark, I so highly recommend you try one of these. They have many other pastries, Scandinavian and not, that look delicious and I'd love to try, but I'll keep coming back just for that snail. My only complaint is that they make so many different loaves of bread, yet there is no traditional danish rye bread - rugbrød. I would give anything to find that in the US! read more

Weird donuts, punk rock biscuits and pie shops may get lots of hype (like cupcakes used to have, and whoopie pies kinda had, maybe...maybe not?), but it's hard to beat the traditional neighborhood bakery, and Larsen's is exactly that. It's a beautiful space, first of all. Plenty of room to roam and gaze in wonder at the breads, cookies, pastries and cakes behind the glass. The folks behind the counter are all smiles. And it smells like the warm, flaky, sweet, buttery region of Heaven. The cherry spandau pastry I got was so, so, soooooo good. The cherries were juicy, and their tartness really popped...so glad that they didn't overwhelm them with sugar. The pastry was flaky and light, and just the right amount of glaze and almonds to top it all off. Wonderful. (I just may have actually ordered a second pastry too, but that's my business.) Normally, I know what I'm going to say in a review, but for the first time, I am truly speechless! My little son, Levi turns one this Thursday and yesterday, (Saturday) was his birthday celebration. We had it all planned out: Family, friends, and the theme: Sesame Street. It's his favorite TV show and it just fit. Thanks to Party City I was able to get everything I needed to decorate our home and essentially turn in into Sesame Street. I had everything! tablecloth, cups, plates, napkins. Not to mention awesome decorations and a darling Sesame Street backdrop perfect for pictures which there were plenty of! Yes, Party City is perfect for party decor, balloon and whatnot. But I'm not here to talk about Party City. I'm here to give Larsen's Bakery huge thanks and applause for being the real stars of this party (my son aside) and making us the most incredible cake I have EVER seen them make! I grew up in Ballard and have had many of Larsen's delicious desserts. But the cake they made for my son...I truly have no words!! I went into the bakery a week before the party to order the cake. I live in Lake Stevens and I know I could have gone somewhere else to get a cake. SO glad I didn't!! My husband even told me to. However, your baby only turns one once. After a short while, he agreed to this notion and allowed me to get the cake from Larsen's. So, Larsen's it was! I went in and told them everything I wanted: A chocolate cake with raspberry moose filling, white butter-cream icing and Sesame Street characters on the top. I listed off which ones I wanted and went on my way. They gave me their business card with their email on it so I could send them pictures of which characters I wanted on the cake and that was that. Thursday, they called me with the price and after giving them my information, was told when the cake would be ready for pick-up. I had my cousin get it since she lives down in Ballard anyway and she was willing. Come yesterday, (Saturday) we all gathered at our home out here in Lake Stevens and while putting the finishing touches on setting up, the cake arrives. Because I wasn't the one who picked it up, I knew I'd be surprised with this cake. To say I was surprised is an understatement. I was downright FLOORED with this cake!!! Never in my life had I seen anything so incredible or so cute! When I told them Sesame street characters, I was expecting to see a row of smallish friends grinning happily. When I opened the box, I was greeted with HUGE 3D characters who looked exactly like they do on the show!!! It was ADORABLE!!!!! Bert and Ernie adorned one corner, The Count to the left, holding the number one, and Oscar and grouch and Abby Cadabby took up the top of the cake. On either side of the cake, in blue icing read "Happy first birthday, Levi!" which I expected to be on the top of the cake. Nope, it was on the side as all the Sesame Street friends took up the top. I have no more words to explain the AMAZING job Larsen's did on this cake; you're just going to have to see it for yourself. Which is why I've posted pictures. I firmly believe that Larsen's employs some sort of magnetic device that will physically drag my vehicle to the shop anytime I'm driving on 24th. Even if I'm minding my own business, with no intention of visiting this magical bakery wonderland I end up stopping here. Larsen's has been around forever, and has an extensive selection of baked things including but not limited to cookies, donuts, breads, Danish Kringle, Norwegian Julekaka bread (cardamom, fruit and raisins) elegant desserts, marzipan, cakes and more. I try to sample different things when I shop here but I am sort of stuck in Kringle-town because it's just such a delicious place to live. For you bargain shoppers, Larsen's has a 50% off rack of day-old bread and desserts that are still fresher than most bread you buy in the grocery store. There is absolutely no reason for you NOT to come here, and savor the flavor of some Scandinavian-American bakery lovin'. read more

Sadly the new Larsen's is nothing like the cool, old school shop bakery it was before. Breads look like they're all made from the same dough. Donuts are smaller and just don't taste very good. Prices are higher, portions are smaller. The Hubs and I are sad because we live near here and like to support indie businesses, but we can't support what Larsen's has become. read more

I drove passed by this cute little bakery and memorized the name bc it just looked like a homey neighborhood business. I later looked it up on Yelp and saw the great reviews. This place is awesome. The food selection is bountiful. I thought everything was pretty reasonably priced. The havarti and turkey croissant was pretty good. I wasn't too much a fan of the ham and Swiss though. I thought the croissant texture was surprisingly good. It was fluffy and not too crispy. I don't like the over baked croissants. The one negative about this place is the unclear instructions. If you come here the first time, you probably won't notice the ticket dispenser. Apparently, the call out your ticket number before you are served. My eyes went straight to the good pastries so I didn't notice. Then they kept calling numbers out. I thought they were calling out the numbers of people who had already ordered and were picking up their food. I stood in line patiently but was ignored. No one told me to get a ticket. I thought I was being snubbed. Anyways, someone finally told me after I asked to order. I think this system might be confusing for first time visitors. I wish they had clearer or larger signs that directed people what to do. Aside from this minor complaint, everything else is yummy. read more

Larsen's not only has amazing pastries, but they do wedding cakes! My wife and I decided to have Larsen's make our wedding cake and Jess, who coordinates the wedding cakes, was super-helpful. She gave us samples of the different kinds of cakes, fillings and frostings. We browsed their catalog of past cake creations and chose a few design elements that we liked. She also helped us pick out how many tiers to get--we settled on a less expensive combination of a 3-tier and two half-sheet cakes. On the day of the wedding the cake was delivered on time and it was beautiful. Not only that, it was delicious. We got many compliments from our guests about it. We also ordered a several hundred cookies of different varieties so we could have a cookie table at the wedding (an old Italian tradition). The cookies were delicious and a hit with our guests too. This is such a wonderful neighborhood bakery but I'd encourage anyone in the market for a cake (whether for your wedding or any other occasion) to consider them. Also, a tip: try the white cake with bavarian cream and raspberry filling. It is to die for. Also: if you haven't been here in a while, they recently remodeled. Wonderful bakery. So much variety. So many items to try. We have been loving the Scandinavian bakeries in Seattle. It is a nice change from French/American. We couldn't figure out what to get. Ended up with a loaf of multigrain bread (because we needed some), a slice of princess cake, cardamom rolls (one of our favorites), cookies for the kids, and a poppyseed almond pastry (I forget the name). Quality was decent. They have beautiful bread there but I would go for one of the more rustic loaves, not a sandwhich loaf. The multigrain was fine but not as good as Great Harvest. The poppyseed pastry was excellent as were the cardamom rolls. Princess cake was decent but not as good as Hoffmann's. Although I've had better items elsewhere, the prices are really good at this bakery. The loaf of bread for instance was nearly half the price of a Great Harvest loaf. I've been going to Larsen's for 25 years - a yearly trek into town for Christmas goodies. Very sad to report that this year was a huge disappointment. All my favorites were just "eh". Especially my favorite - the Kransekage - way too much almond extract. Almost inedible. When you make it a destination trip, and drop 50$ for a handful of pastries...you want it to be GOOD. Larsen's baked goods are delicious. Truly. Bakeries oftentimes have things that I think are way, WAY too sweet or just blah. Everything I've tried from Larsen's is delicious. I surprised my family on Easter with a cake that looked like a lamb. Yes, I know it's pretty demented, but it was so freaking delicious. It easily fed 7 of us.. and you know what else? It was only something like $15. You really can't beat their prices!! I will drive out of my way to come here. One thing to note, however, at least one of the girls behind the counter are really rude. I don't let it bother me. It's her job and not mine. The snottier you get, the longer I'm going to take to select my order and count out my pennies, bizzznitch! I have been coming to Larsen's Bakery for years because of it's reputation as one of the best bakeries town. Recently in the past 3-4 years I have made my way to Larson's if I was in the neighbor. I will NO LONGER make an effort. They have lost their way and no longer have any baked goods or services I can recommend. They don't know how to bake anymore. Their baked goods are pedestrian at best. Basically bread slathered with sugar. No delicate taste that invites you bake because it was so good. And I have to mention that EVERY TIME I visited the employees were unhelpful and RUDE. It seems they truest have lost their way in baking and are more about the making money off the past reputation. If you want a good bakery visit Petit Pierre Bakery in Magnolia or Byen Bakeri on Nickerson near SPU. read more

Wow. I really like this place for sweet snacking. Pros:Their coffee is good! Their pastry selection is huge...the biggest I've seen in Ballard. They have the best Marzipan cakes I've ever tried. They have very nice people working here. Cons: The floors are always dirty and filled with fallen crumbs; there aren't any posted prices so you have to keep asking how much the baked goods costs. This is my new favorite bakery. It was a bit of a steep bike from the U district to get here, but it made me feel like I earned my pastries :) This is definitely going to be one of my go-to bakeries in Seattle to study from now on. I got here around 10:00 on a Saturday morning, and there was barely a wait to purchase items, and there were plenty of free tables. Huge plus for me was the window seating, which means I could face outside while I studied. Plus they have free wifi, which is important for being able to get work done! There were three different cases of baked goods. One was a bread section, with tons of reasonably priced items. Another was cookies and donuts, which I didn't look too closely at. The third was pastries like croissants and kringles, and everything was significantly cheaper than I've seen at most bakeries in Seattle. I got a royal croissant (twice baked almond) for 3.79 I believe, and it was amazing. Wonderful almond flavor with a crispy, sugary exterior. Also a huge plus is their day-old section, where everything is half off, and they have a ton of items! I picked up a couple cheese-green onion rolls, a loaf of potato bread, and a cardamom braid from this section. The potato bread isn't the best I've had, but it's still good bread, with a slight sourdough flavor to it. The cardamom bread is soft, sugary, and bursting with cardamom flavor. The cheese rolls had a little kick to them, I think there might be jalapenos or something, but the bread is soft and delicious. The people at the counter were super friendly and helpful, and when I was looking around at the day-old items they said just bring anything up to the counter with my questions and they could tell me what everything was. It started getting a little more crowded around 11/11:30, but there was still plenty of seating, the line to buy things just reached a little bit out the door. Overall, amazing bakery, great pricing, and a wonderful study spot. I will definitely be returning! read more

I haven't been to this bakery in a long time. They remodeled! It's cleaner and more modern but I do miss the old school charm of the old place. The guy who help us at the counter was super friendly and joke every 3 seconds, which a bit much but hey, someone is happy at work so that's cool. We got cream cheese twist, triple chocolate cake, and carrot cake. Carrot cake was very good, moist, dense and good amount of carrot, raisins, spices, and nuts. Triple chocolate cake was quite yummy as well. Cream cheese twist was just ok for me. I found it a bit dry and not enough cream cheese. And it's quite big, like a foot long! I found bake goods here to look and taste more like a homemade, not the perfectly frosted like other bakeries, which is unique in a way. read more

I wanted to surprise my coworkers with something different than Top Pot and so I stopped here for Danish pastries. For an office that resists sugar, the pastries from here were gone quickly! Favorites included all of the berry flavored danishes, the croissants with chocolate, and the cinnamon roll type twist. The staff were friendly and the store has a large selection. Although a dozen pastries were $30 (compared to $18 for a dozen at other donut stores), I think the price was worth it because I was getting more flavor than other places. Parking in the neighborhood was easy. I look forward to trying a cake or cookies next time, both of which they have large selection of. read more

So disappointing. I sat RIGHT IN FRONT of the counter on a SLOW DAY. I ordered my coffee and watched them make coffee for everyone who ordered AFTER me, while staring right at me. Only when I directly addressed them and asked where my drink was did the employees look at me and say "Oh my bad". We've lived up the street for years. My daughter learned to walk by coming here. So great! Outrageous selection of pastries, cakes, cookies, and more! Staff was super patient as we gawked at all the display cases, taking forever to decide what to order. Kiddo got a cookie as big as his head, and dropped it on the ground two bites in. Went to buy him a new one and was given a replacement for free. Finally making it in here a week ago, I didn't quite expect the variety of baked goods that I actually found. After a lot of deliberation, I settled on picking up a cream cheese danish and a slice of their famous kringle for $2.15 each, and an entire raspberry cream cheese twist for $6.65. Overall, typical American bakery fare. Which, to me, really means that everything is way, way, way too sweet. The danish wasn't too bad, but both the kringle and twist, while tasty, were far too sweet, even when accompanied with strong black coffee (after the first bite, I refused to eat them without coffee). There is a reason this bakery has been around for 40 years, It is truly fabulous. They have a huge variety of items and everything we have tried has been amazing. They have a large selection of croissants, breads, brioche, cookies, danish pastry, cakes- even doughnuts. And they have classics that I have not seen anywhere else - like an individual sized pineapple upside down cake. And since they are a Scandinavian bakery they have all sorts of Scandinavian treats. Being half Swedish I consider myself a bit of a Princess Cake expert. I even had it as my wedding cake (from the beloved late Scandinavian Bakery in Ballard). While theirs is not the best I have had (in this country that award goes to Berolina Bakery in Montrose, CA) - it was very good. The cake almost taste likes a pound cake and it should have more whip cream. But it was fresh and tasty and they have two kinds - one with raspberry and one with lemon. 2.5 to be exact, but since I am kind, I rounded up. Walk into Larsen's and you are immediately struck by the vast array of beautiful baked goods in the cases. It is a clear representation of extraordinary process and artistry. A dedication to the craft of baking that doesn't present itself at just any old bakery. And the smells. This is a place you want to come back to again and again. We recently moved just a few blocks from Larsen's. My sister had lived in the area for nearly twenty years. Larsen's was high on their list, until it wasn't. Now they don't visit it. I have been to Larsen's four times since we moved here nine months ago. Aside from the first time, each visit has been preceding by the fear I would once again be served poorly. That the demonstration of process, pride and artistry stopped inside the cases and would fail to manifest in the service experience. Today was one of those days. We stopped to pick up a Kringle for a neighbor. But you don't just stop here. You are thrust into a line of people with numbers in hand waiting to be taken care of, but not served. I grabbed the Kringle off the shelf. I was number 17. The clicker was on 10. So, even though this is all I wanted, I was forced to wait for nearly twenty minutes in order for them to get to me. I watched as the three people behind the counter bumped into each other (don't worry, they were all moving too slowly for it to do any harm), left to "go upstairs" for something, made espresso, pulled baked goods from the case and had difficulties with the register. Nothing was handled expeditiously. It was all a slog. A slow moving log tow pulled against the wind. There are a few great bakeries in Ballard, but there offerings are much smaller. I will return to them until such time I forget the feeling of neglect that comes with shopping at Larsen's. History suggests that is about two months. I have been to Larsen's in the middle of the week when I was the only customer. The pattern doesn't change much. But it is Larsen's and so it will remain busy. I wasn't sure what to expect here, as a lot of the pastries (mostly the American-style ones) pictured on the website don't look that appealing. But we stuck with the kringle (both the original almond flavor and the apple one), and really enjoyed them. I appreciated the high filling-to-pastry ratio. The pastries weren't excessively sweet, and the apple filling tasted fresh. We tried two Scandinavian bakeries in our time in Seattle and preferred this one. We can't wait to return! read more

It is hard to give a bakery 5 stars when the seating arrangement encourages you to move on. For a neighborhood bakery, it is actually as lovely as it can be. First is the selection! The display made want to try everything and we did our best. We purchased few items, strictly by their appeal to eyes and ate them in the store with the coffee. Interesting that you get the cream yourself by walking 5 feet to the refrigerator. Everything was delicious except for the Rhubarb Strudel, a seemingly popular item but too tart for me. I bought the "world famous" Kringle back to the office and it was devoured quickly. The huge cookies vanished from my hands as I walked the hallways. A Seattle icon, Larsen's never disappoints. Among the best Danish bakeries on the West Coast, the owner's immigrated from Copenhagen and we got the benefit. Pastries are made with real butter-you can tell-and it's all fresh. The star is the famous Kringle--it sells out daily and at Christmastime there is a line out the door and around the block of customers waiting to buy the luscious pastry. We've tried the breads, rolls, tarts and more; it's all great. They finished a complete remodel about a year ago, but kept the familiar overhang on the door. Now the place is gorgeous; warm and inviting, modern and chic but the surroundings showcase the pastries, which are really out of this world. The staff are sweet and the coffee is great. I love most bakeries but this one had the selection of dessert lover's dreams and they had a wild selection of fresh breads too! We got large cookies, multigrain bread, blueberry scone, almond raspberry croissant, and a cake pop. Everything is fresh and delicious. If you're in the area, this place is a necessary stop! OMG $135 for four dozen sugar cookies (ok, yes, in the shape of kitties and doggies and unicorns, but REALLY?!). How hard is it to add M&Ms to sugar cookies? ...ok, ok, maybe more $ for the rainbow cookies... BUT There's no rainbow frosting? There's no other options?! Not only did you lose a potential order, I am reticent to come there for my croissant in the future. It is sad that your customer service didn't have time for brainstorming with me. She must have been too busy... I can obviously go to Safeway and buy similar type items. You must not be worried about competition. But come on!
