This is our stop when we want to throw together a Mexican meal! There is a taqueria inside as well, it smells good, but that's not why we come. The produce is fresh and fairly priced. The marinated meats make it almost too easy to create a tasty meal. If you are not Spanish speaking and white you will have to be assertive up at the meat counter or you will be ignored. This last trip I had to gently point out to the woman ordering that we were in front of her. Haha. Don't skip the sample salsas and dips! Lastly, the DESSERTS! They are just gorgeous! I was really impressed with Las Montañas, it was much cleaner, organized, and well stocked than expected. The employees were all really friendly, some with limited English skills but it gave me a chance to practice my Spanish which was great! This store has a restaurant inside, and juice bar. They had a stand where you could get pupusas. The produce section had some unique items and the largest papayas and carrots I've EVER seen. The meat/poultry/fish section was well stocked but didn't look appealing to me, and smelled a little. They had some Colombian items such as the flour to make Arepas, and red vanilla soda. I bought a bag of the Peruvian beans to cook at home and they were delicious. There are some other random businesses within the store, such a clothing shop and insurance business but they were closed in the morning. They have a huge bakery with pastries, cookies and cakes. Watch out for lard if you want to avoid it in items such as conches (Mexican sweet bread). Even if you're not a normal shopper here, this is a fun excursion and for sure you'll find lots to buy! read more

I wanted to give a special shoutout to Yolanda in the bakery department. I came in looking for help with a very special cake for my father, and the original cake was quite plain. Yolanda took the time to help transform it into something much more meaningful for the occasion, and I could immediately see how much pride she takes in her work. She listened carefully to what I was hoping for and made me feel valued throughout the process. Yeah I've been randomly getting ads for La Plaza Market in Spanish on some of my apps, so I've had Mexican supermarkets on the mind recently. When I walked by this place on my Concord trip, I decided to pop in for a bit. This is actually my second time coming here. Overall it's a solid Mexican supermarket. My favorite section is probably the bread section, with a solid selection of conches and other Mexican breads. They have a taqueria attached where you can get fast food or fresh tortillas. The venue is a little cramped, but overall, I would recommend this supermarket if you're in the area. Enough talk. read more

Review solely for the desserts we picked up and the service at check out: I came here for one thing and one thing only - something sweet. They have a whole selection of desserts on the side, as well as a whole glass case of baked goods. Not sure if it's a good or bad thing if the case is still stocked on a late Sunday afternoon though. I knew I wanted a slice of tres leches cake so I went to the cake counter. They have a large selection of tres leches cake slices- chocolate, cajeta (caramel), strawberry, coffee, etc, as well as flan and chocoflan but all the signs are in the wrong place. Also all the signs are in Spanish, so if you're not at least a little familiar with some Spanish, this might be a bit confusing for you. A nice employee came up to ask us what we'd like and I made my choices. She only spoke Spanish but ya girl knows a lil sum'n sum'n so it wasn't too difficult to get my point across. This employee was nice though, even with the communication barrier, and she handed over my cake, gelatin, and cup of arroz con leche (rice pudding for you gringos) to me and I happily headed over to the front register. The cashier at the register on the other hand was NOT nice or friendly. I greeted her hello and no response. We actually had no communication at all aside from, "do you want a bag?".. but that's okay, whatever. Even though the cake had milk leaking out of it, into the container, the cake itself was just dry.. In my mind, it was going to be fluffy, soft, and milky but the texture of the cake left a bit to be desired. I got the cajeta flavor so this had a nice thick layer of caramel in the middle which was delicious and not overly sweet. The whipped cream frosting on top tastes like the one that comes pre made in those big tubs.. so nothing to really say about that other than it's basic. It's thick and not overly sweet, but does nothing for the cake itself. For $5.99, you do get a fat slice but I wouldn't get this again as the quality wasn't there. The arroz con leche was also meh too. For $4, it could have been a lot better. Once again the quantity is there, but the quality just isn't. It was creamy and thick, but it semi had a coconut milk flavor which I usually would love but it just didn't work. Also, the rice grains weren't cooked well so they were a little dry and not soft. The cinnamon flavor was light, and the dessert itself not overly sweet, but another thing I wouldn't get again. read more

It's a decent grocery store , but I used to go here specifically for the store made flour tortillas, they used to taste like home made flour tortillas. They have since drastically changed their recipe, where now they're only slightly better than the generic mass produced flour tortillas . I was hoping this was a temporary change but it seems it seems that it's permanent now . I will not be going back here till / if they revert back tot the original recipe. I have never been more let down by this store up until today. Cashier named Yamel R today mistreated my mother at the cash register. After we kept explaining to her how my credit card didn't need a pin. You would think the cashiers have common sense and would know this yet they show no sign of intelligence. I only used my credit card because the last time we were here I used my debit and the store charged me twice causing my bank to think of it as fraud. I love Los Montanas markets and have been patronizing them in Alameda County all my life. I would avoid this one. The other day I asked the carniceria if they sold any smoking meats, I gave an example, Brisket or Tri Tip. The guy helping me, looked back at an older guy who went off on a tirade in Spanish for about 10 minutes. Unnecessary and uncomfortable to say the least. The dude and I came to Las Montañas restaurant before the Raiders game to pick up some meat to BBQ with. They have a restaurant inside which there were a handful of people dining in. We got a side order of beans and rice to go with our tacos we were to eat. I personally thought the rice was oily and flavorless and the beans needed to be more spiced up. We went to the section where they sell meats and the dude got what locked like yellow chicken which appears according to him they may marinate the meat in Sunny D. The meat was so delicious when the dude grilled it on the grill. We walked around the store in our Raiders outfit which I was so excited as the locals would ask us if we are going to a Raiders game which indeed we were. The dude and I were talking to fans about the game and the staff. The store was very clean and organized. I enjoyed this store and it is in a plaza by my dudes family house so it's conveniently located. The plaza also has a 99 cent store right next to it. Like I mentioned, the bread and meats must come from the grocery side. Bread is super fresh and the chicken is nicely grilled. Even that special Mexican cheese (forgot the name) is yummy. I love this place! If it weren't for my Mexican bf, I would have never stepped foot in a Latin supermarket. They have the best Mexican pastries. I love buying oversized chocolate chip. My bf prefers some of the other cookies and the Mexican bread. I bake a lot of Latin pastries, and this market has everything that I need such as quince paste and guava paste. They do not sell this the American grocery stores. They do sell it online but it costs an arm and a leg. The other thing that I buy is fresh lard. Yes, lard. They sell shelf-stable lard at the American supermarkets, but they are so bad for you. I took a whiff and it smelled like nasty chemicals. I prefer fresh lard. I use to make traditional Chinese Almond Cookies. You can't sub with butter. It just doesn't taste the same. They also make their own tortilla chips and sell them in giant bags. These chips are so thin and light, they will melt in your mouth. I bought two bags of these and gave them to my sister as a bday gift. And another thing, the cashier people are always so friendly to me. I'm usually the only Asian person here, but that's ok. read more

Made it to Concord, found this wonderful market with a taqueria inside. Pretty much overwhelming in their varieties. The chile relleno plate caught my eye immediately. I do love chile relleno! This market did not disappoint, The order came with rice and beans and a mound of tortillas. I asked for the corn tortillas. The rice is the good stuff made properly not some of the creations some other places try to pass off. The beans, ehh pretty pedestrian. The chile relleno was a winner! The security guard is a miserable mess. Even my doctor says her and her coworkers get treated like crap when they go in by him. So what he will do is YELL to leave your bag upfront, as if you are a worthless dog. I did with a smile on my face and said "yes no problem!" So I put my bag up and take my cash and medicine out. He yells again, this time he wants me to keep my money and Medicine with him. No way! The manager came over and said he was "no bueno" over and over and that he was a "subcontractor." So? He's at YOUR store, if I found him stealing or something from me it's las Montanas liability! Also, they could EASILY change guards. Such a great spot for both the taqueria and the market! I love to make classic mexican dishes at home and some of the things you need you just can not get at the normal store. So I will make a special trip down to here to pick up the ingredients I need. Quality ingredients really do make a difference in the dishes you use so it is totally worth the trip for me! Another must when I am here are the prepared tamales! Normally you help yourself but with COVID they will now bag them for you. So far I have tried the chicken tamales and the jalapeno and cheese tamales. Thinking about the chicken tamales right now is making me drool! They are super good! The chicken is shredded and stewed in a tasty green sauce. The sauce is a little vinegary but works with the masa! No need for any extra sauce just eat them plain! Plus the amazing masa! Thick but soft. I would skip the jalapeno and cheese tamales though. The cheese is cheddar and it is not what I picture when I want a tamale.
