I'm giving this place 2 stars because of the quality of food and drinks, which was great. If you come for service, go somewhere else. It was horrible I waited over 20 minutes to even be acknowledged at the bar for a corona and spicy margarita. We went the patio for tacos and food. We ordered over $60 worth of tacos and food ($6 for 2 tacos so we went all out). They came over and brought over our first bit of food and we started digging in. A woman later came over yelling at us for taking an item that wasn't ours. We tried to explain to the woman that we didn't intend to take an item that wasn't ours, she wouldn't listen and kept yelling at us. We finally agreed to pay for one quesadilla that we were handed that we never wanted. They charged us $26. When I went to try and work it out they ignored me and wouldn't rectify or even listen to what I want to say. Overall the experience was horrible but the food and drink was great. read more

If you love tequila or mezcal this is your heaven!! Came here on a art walk night and she was packed.. This place is located right across from the famous Coles and very close to the art district hot spots.. Access is easy with not too much fuss and was free to get in on the night I went.. Place is decorated Mexicali style and the bartenders appear to know what they are doing.. I like the fact that they have lots of plays on tequila and mezcal beyond the typical margarita.. If your coming here be adventurous and try something different, you might be pleasantly surprised.. My group and I ordered bandero shots which was a shot of tequila followed by a shot of lime juice followed by a tomatoe type juice.. The combination amazing!! I've been to Las Perlas a few times and decided to see if all of my experiences differ and nope they didn't, I have a blast every time I've visited. My friend and I decided to walk over since her apartment is only a short waking distance, but for those who don't have the luxury there is a parking lot a block away. Upon walking to the building, if you're not paying attention to where you're going, you can easily miss the building so make sure to look up. Once inside, you're greeted by an amazing wall display behind the bar, which is stocked with lots of different tequilas and mezcals. We happened to visit during happy hour so we took advantage of the deals, grabbed our drinks and headed to the patio. While walking out, there is a street vendor style food station staffed by two lovey women who have a lot of patience dealing with the inebriated that want munchies, and a chalk board with inexpensive items offered. You can't go wrong with $6 carnitas tacos so give me two orders, credit card only you take your receipt that has your order number on it and you wait. Depending on how busy they are it can take 10/15 min but well worth the wait. Soon we heard a violin, and women singing and YES the live band has started - I'm a HUGE fan of live music especially when the music is kept natural and hasn't been commercialized to grab the attention of those who may not understand the lyrics; they played until about an hour before the bar closed. I recommend everyone visit Las Perlas with friends, on a date or alone because you will meet people who are up for a chat. read more

The place itself is GREAT. I love love loved the decorations, the ambiance, everything. TONS OF seating, and even places to just stand and put your drink down. We found an opening at the bar and put our orders in. Bf got the: Poblano Escobar: Mezcal, pierre ferrond dry orange curacao, cumin, muddled poblano chili and fresh pineapple, lime, agave. Me: I don't see what I had on the menu, but I basically got a margarita. Our drinks were...good...BUT, for what? almost $14 bucks, they totally rip you off. Stopped in for a friends birthday and for the most part, I thought Las Perlas was just ok. There was a small wait outside of the bar which indicated there was a full house...for me at least. Once inside, the crowd wasn't that big to justify having a line formed at the entrance. I'm sure it's to draw in customers and it's easily something to look past. Once inside, it was straight to ordering drinks. One would think I'd go for the Mezcal first but I went for a Pacifico. The beer sadly was on the warm side..."THOU SHALT NOT SERVE WARM BEER!!!". I finished the beer as quickly as possible. The glass was cold and from that I assumed the beer would be too. My fault for not checking before walking away from the bar I guess. The Jarritos Paloma however was cold and refreshing. Jarritos is one of the most flavorful soft drinks around in my opinion (I love those things) so with it spiked with tequila, I knew a treat awaited. This drink was good and it is something I'd order in the future. I also got to taste a smokey margarita that was pretty decent. Mezcal is more of an acquired taste if you ask me due to it's smoky flavor. So while the person who bought the cocktail thought it was disgusting, I actually liked it. I walked to check out the outside patio and the scent I stepped into smelled like Heaven via taco cart lol. I'm the type of person who has to keep an empty stomach to enjoy a buzz so no taco eating came from this but you better believe it'll happen if a second trip ever comes about. *No Patrón Tequila here* Seriously, you think you're too high and mighty to refuse a well-liked tequila? A couple weeks ago, I tried an Oaxacan-style tequila old fashion with Mezcal at the Golden Gopher (http://www.yelp.com/biz/golden-gopher-los-angeles) and couldn't stop thinking about it. Mezcal is a type of agave liquor (alternative to tequila) that is super smokey, drunk with moderation because its overwhelming taste, and quite frankly, reminds me a little of drinking liquid BBQ. Hmmm, why can't I stop thinking about you? ;) Luckily for me, I found that Las Perlas also specializes in drinks with Mezcal. On the menu, you'll find that they like to play that "liquid smoke" Mezcal with fruitier drinks, which I think is pretty genius. I told the bartender about my experience before, he made the drink for me, if not better. All of Las Perlas' cocktails range from well-crafted fruity drinks and infamous for their rose petal garnishes to straight tequila shots. If you're not feeling the cocktails on their list, you could chose a tequila from their long, elaborate list of the liquor. Upon deciding on a type of tequila, the bartender also complemented the shot with a glass of their housemade "sangrita," which is non-alcoholic tomato juice. The mixture of tomato juice and spices were incredible and I wanted to take home a bottle of that tomato juice home and drink it every morning. V8 is nada compared to this. So now you know what the specialty is at Las Perlas, be prepared to be surrounded by ambiance and decor that'll prepare you for almost every tequila known to Mayor Villaraigosa. I don't usually take mixers in my drinks because well, it's kinda like having sex with a condom on, it's just not the same. But in the case of Las Perlas I'll make an exception because the bartenders here are skilled at making their specialty cocktails and won't really give you an attitude if you don't know exactly what you want to drink right away. This is the spot where I ended up on a little bar hoping venture I took thru downtown recently. It was bar number two of a long and really fun night spent with friends and one cutie. It was a great choice except for two large hiccups which cost this charming little cantina 2 stars from its 5 star score. The music was dope. Hip hop and 80's alternative if I remember correctly, but to be fair... I wasn't fully present due to the excessive libations I had knocked back, but I will report what I recall... The woman's bathroom is darling! Clean and super cute with a large pink and white flower mural on the walls and in the stalls. It was totally cheerful and adorable. Not what you would ever expect in a downtown LA tequila bar! The spicy margarita was REALLY amazing. It was probably one of the best margaritas I've ever had... and trust me. I've had a lot!! This drink I do remember clearly. It rocked! The crowd was predominantly 20-somethings, predominantly Latinos and everyone was cool. I was among my people... except, I was the old one. Anyway- moving on... Here's what was whack: The waitress we had- a young, slight, orange/blonde haired chica was sort of a total bitch. I hated her- we all did. Just saying. Why don't they have food!? I was so hungry and getting pretty drunk fast at this spot. I needed food! But slight orange haired girl explained they don't have food. Um- WTF?! We came here late one night and they checked my ID -- haha made my night -- and then we got some drinks and checked out the ambiance. We all got different drinks but the one which stood out was the Spicy Daisy. That was my absolute fave! Las Perlas - La casa de los Latinos! THE AMBIANCE: You walk in and it looks like Mexico. The decor is awesome - I love it. It's fun, it's cultural, it's us. The bar with the goat shrine is on point. The restroom for the ladies is located on the left of the bar, the bar extends to the other side of the room (bar stools/about three (3) booths) where you can find some tables and at times a DJ, there is another room connected to that one (no walls), then through that room you reach the patio area where there are tables and stools where you can sit and people watch. THE DRINKS: My favorite drink at Las Perlas is their michelada with their house mix. I am not that into tequila but if your are, Las Perlas is the place to be because it's known as a tequila bar. If not a michelada I would opt for one of their margaritas to have some tequila. Another good drink but a bit too spicy for me is the Spiced Daisy. Honestly, like the goat shrine Las Perlas' drinks are on point so whatever you decided to order you will enjoy. After walking in and out of two bars filled with hipsters, we walked into this one. Ah.. much better. This one has more of a diverse crowd. You can't really tell it's a bar from the outside.. I wouldn't have gone in, if I hadn't found it on Yelp. They have an interesting decor... like the stuffed lamb on an end table. What most impressed me was the drink menu. Tequila flights, beer samplers, and good drinks with lots of fruits in them. I been here twice and I've been very happy with my drinks. Bartenders are very cool, attentive, helpful and friendly.. especially Noel. They made my drinks with TLC. It's not a fancy place; It's just a chill spot. It's the Anti-Hollywood.. that's what I'm talking about. The best part is that it's free and very close to many other bars.. very convenient for bar hopping. No cover charge, no lines, good location, great drinks, cool bartenders, good prices, good music and crowd. What more do you need? I've been here for both the night life and happy hour and enjoyed myself both times. When I first walked in I thought I was walking into one of those cheesy, over-decorated Mexican cantina places but the more I took in my surrounding the more I began to like the decor and thought it had just the right amount of color popping with dim lighting to create an upbeat and casual atmosphere. It's conveniently located in downtown around a bunch of other bars so I'd recommend stopping in for a happy hour drink, chatting with the nice bartenders and being on your way to your next location. During happy hour I had the Jarritos Paloma with mango jarritos (mexican soda). I don't like soda and especially don't like the carbonated feel to it but this drink was really tasty and refreshing. I was worried it would be too sweet and taste like a mouthful of corn syrup but they actually did a good job with it! I would get it again. My friends each got the las perlas margaritasand we all agreed mine was better. They're both $5 so I'd definitely recommend trying one of the jarriots paloma drinks. They come with tequila and a handful of different jarritos flavors to choose from like grapefruit, pineapple and jamaica. From what I remember, the night life was decent. The dance floor isn't huge but the music was good to dance to while sipping on one of their unique cocktail concoctions which feature a variety of tequilas and ingredients like jalapeño, cucumber and ginger! read more

My first visit here was merely 2 weeks ago. I thought I'd come back and knock out the rest of the cocktails on their menu. Maybe they knew my intentions because they didn't have all the necessary ingredients for The Melon, which means I will just have to come back again! Woe is me. :o) Oh well. My mission wasn't deterred altogether. The main draw for me was the Poblano Escobar. It was reminiscent of The King De Bahia I had at Copa D' Oro, but better. While not as hot as The King De Bahia, the Poblano Escobar was still spicy. And although I am not the biggest Mezcal drinker, I am quickly becoming a fan. Anyhow, I am less of an Elderflower Liquor drinker. Hence, my preference for The Poblano Escobar. On my next visit, I hope to finally try out the elusive "El Melon" and try a Smokey Margarita. read more

This place isn't bad for happy hour, but it's a bit over priced. It's a lounge that is opens starting at 7pm. It was empty on a Monday night, but cozy for intimate conversation with a group of friends. I had the Smokey Margarita and the birthday boy had the Bruja Blanca. For Spanish a themed lounge, the bartender didn't know a lick of Spanish. When the birthday boy ordered a "white witch", the bartender had no idea what was being ordered. Las Perlas is under new management and the owner is a wonderful tequila and mescal aficionado. She started a monthly tasting event, the first of which was last Tuesday and featured Bru-xo (warlock) mescal and Tequila Ocho tastings. Both companies had a speaker who educated the group about tequila, mescal, and allowed sampling. They also offered taquitos and salad fixings as a side. We sat on the patio overlooking the street facing Cole's, and enjoyed the night life of Downtown LA... a colorful crowd. The service was great. They have a large selection of options and carry some of my favorite brands - Clase Azul, Fortaleza, etc. Cool atmosphere, and while my friends and I were able to pace ourselves appropriately, we had so much fun learning about Blue Agave, and the Agave that Mescal is created from, the process of making these beautiful spirits, and the joys of friendship. If I lived in the area, I would be a regular. I want to go back again already! read more

Loving the live music they have...not sure if it's every day of the week, but was there on a Tuesday and was very entertained by the band led by a very energetic violinist. Spicy michelada is actually spicy, like, legit spicy, and service is friendly. There was also a taco/taquito/quesadilla lady-run vendor on their patio serving up some festive fare to go along with the beverage offerings (not sure if they're a permanent fixture, though, so call ahead to see if they're there if you're hungry). Pretty crowded on a Tuesday night after a holiday weekend so that definitely tells you it's a place you need to visit at some point. AMAZING!!!! This place saved our night. I took my friends to The Varnish right across the street and it was the worst experience ever. It was already late so we decided to just cross the street to this place and LOVED IT! The bouncer was friendly, the bartenders were good looking and and also really cool. And the best part was that the drinks were well crafted cocktails. There are only a few places that I know of that don't use nasty syrups and this is one of those places. They are NOT lazy bartenders. They know what they are doing and you can taste it. They have a pool table, dj, patio and good vibes all around. The place is cute... Loved the theme of rabbit and the over lighting we had throughout the night. Their drinks tasted funky to me. I had 2 shots of patron reposado ($10 each)because their drinks were either too sweet or like my hubby said taste like sweat. lol ! Yuck! Not to mention we were there at 9:40 pm trying to order and it took us 34 mins to actually get serviced. Buckets are only 5 beers with lime in a cup in the middle to make it look full. lol! We came in for happy hour and sat at the bar, thinking service will be faster, damn was I wrong !, Sketchy security guy in front, doesn't seem like he works there . VERY BAD SERVICE at the bar, bob hair white chick (don't remember name) took forever to get our drinks, Bare in mind, bar was not busy. Gave her the benefit of the doubt, as the night progress and got busier, two bartenders working total. We tried getting bob hair girl bartender's attention to get more drinks, but she was off in la la la land. To make matters worst she came to check on a couple next to us and completely ignored us.!! I had to yell to get her attention and to make us another round. I even had to ask the bus boy once to make a drink. SERVICE was that BAD! The happy hour margarita is not freshly made, they pour it from a tank that is pre made. We had specifically said we were going to pay cash before opening a tab. Bob hair chick bartender said that's fine. Happy hour ended ended, and we close our tab and paid cash for the tab, with NO TIP. Next day, I check my account and WTH!, las Perlas charged the tab !
