Everything that needs to be said on the fun decor, the higher-than-average prices, the good selection of tequilas / mezcales, etc. has already been posted here. But came here recently early in the week, walking into a bar that had 5 people drinking, at the most. Was approached by a large guy who had been sitting at the bar and was told, "Lose the hat," referring to my ballcap. I complied, even though anti-ballcap rules are a sure sign of the dumbest of suburban-minded management, especially in Los Angeles. Even more so when 3 guys in the bar in the bar that night (the bartender included) were wearing beanies. To bar management: explain how ski caps are somehow acceptable in your bar when ballcaps are not. And as patrons dropping 14 bucks a drink are paying not only your rent, but the bouncer's wage, please educate him on manners. read more

I came by on a Saturday evening around 10:00 PM. It was crowded enough that it there weren't many places to sit, and you had to wait for a short while for drinks, but not so crazy packed that you couldn't move or had to wait forever. The music was too loud to talk easily, but it's quieter on the patio, though you have to contend with the smokers. Don't bother coming unless you love tequila and mezcal; there beer list is short and average, and there aren't other spirits available. But if you do love tequila/mezcal, Las Perlas is a no brainer great choice! Cocktails range from $9 - $11. So, pricey if you're a cheap-o like me, but cheap if you're used to drinking downtown. (Alert for my fellow cheap-os: margaritas are $5 during happy hour, weekdays until 8 PM and all night Mondays!) I tried the Oaxacan Negroni -- wow. This is a serious cocktail. Puts hair on your chest, as my mom would say. My friend tried it and said that it tasted like something a gangster would drink after committing some kind of organized crime. If I ever kill someone, I'll come to Las Perlas and down five of these. My guy tried the smokey margarita, which was good -- not overly smokey and much easier-drinking. They had one surprisingly good deal, even at a non-happy hour time -- Modern Times coffee stout on tap, for just $4! (The other 3 beers on tap were $6 or $7.) The stout was not my favorite, and on the thin/watery side -- so boo to Modern Times, who I expect better of, but three cheers to Las Perlas for offering a cheap beer from a good craft brewer. read more

Las Perlas is an awesome tequila and mezcal bar in DTLA. It's casual and low-key--a great change of pace from other bars in the area. They boast a distinctive menu of mezcal margaritas for about $10 and have attentive and incredibly knowlegeable bartenders. They exhibit true passion for tequila here. I've tried a few of the specialty mezcal margaritas, and they really have something for everyone, whether you prefer stiff, sweet, dry, sour, bitter spicey or a combination of those attributes. My favorite is the Sueno, with fresh stawberry and basil. I've tried the signature Las Perlas margarita, and it tasted like gasoline--definitely not for the weak of spirit. The interior is brandished with Dia de Los Muertos decor. It is dark and mysterious, yet festive and whimsical. They have small tables, an outdoor patio, eclectic music and even a juke box. There is no cover to get in, and the bouncers seem pretty chill. It is not too busy on weekends compared to neighboring venues, especially before 11PM, and you could probably snag a table if you get there early enough. read more

I arrived at 8pm, and the doors were not yet open, though the bar is supposed to open at 8. No big deal, the guests of honor had not yet arrived, and I wasn't in a hurry. The bartender wasn't either, it seems; nor was he listening to what drinks my friends ordered, or the fact that I said I wanted only water. Four of us stood at the bar, and 2 of the people I was with ordered and received their drinks. Then, my third ordered a drink, and I asked for my water. Instead, the bartender takes at least 5 more minutes making not one but two more cocktails. He says that he's gone ahead and taken the liberty to make me a cocktail that he "thinks I'll like". He also informs my acquaintance that rather than make her the drink she wanted, he has gone ahead and made her...something he thinks she'll want more. When one is paying OVER $50 for a round of 4 drinks that are mostly ice, Mr. Bartender, I'm thinking at least listen to the people who are ordering. For the record--you got lucky, and my friend whose drink choice you told us you ignored and made a different drink thought her drink was okay. I, however, thought mine stunk. I would never have ordered what you gave me, and I definitely would have given you an earful had I not had a friend who was willing to drink that...thing that you pawned on me. Also: whoever's aesthetic choice it was to scribble in a mix of marker and pen on cardboard for menus at a kitschy/way-overpriced place that serves $12 small drinks? How does one go about getting a job like that? Because I have tons of uses for cardboard, and my handwriting is much better. I'm only not giving this place 1 star because I had a good evening in great company despite this bar's ridiculous bartender and some truly obnoxious patrons. Very cute little tequila/mezcal-only bar in dtla with an adorable vibe. Good mixed drinks and plenty of seating. I had to knock it down to only 3 stars, though, because there's only one bar and it's severely understaffed. For a Thursday night, this place is happening. The ambient is pretty cool, low light...the decoration is nice too. There's a lot of seating space. The outdoor patio is perfect. The location of this place makes it perfect for bar hopping too. The Association, Cole's and Varnish are right across the street. Overall it's a cool place to hang with friends and have a good drink. Bye, had the Spicy Daisy...GREAT drink!!! Spicy drinks with jalapeño are always a hit & miss...this one is a HIT!!! Okay I'm going to edit my original review and give them another star....that's 3 stars now. I'm willing to cut a place some slack.......I'll go back again and if things don't repeat I can pull the entire review....but for now the original post stays..... Nothing ruins a place faster than getting bad service from the owner or general manager. Went on a Saturday night, ordered two drinks at the bar and gave my credit card to start a tab. Ordered a second round of drinks, put it on the card. Finally it was time for the third round of drinks, and suddenly they asked for cash. I told them I had a tab going and they told me the credit card machine was down and that I'd have to pay cash. I told them I didn't have any cash on me and they had already accepted my credit card and opened up a tab. Offer, acceptance, consideration.....everything you need for a valid contract. After telling them again that I didn't have enough cash they quickly pointed at the ATM.....like problem solved. Negative. I didn't have my ATM card with me and by this point I was beginning to get annoyed. A perfectly fun evening was turning into a not so fun one. Well after asking for the manager for a while they finally located him. He came barreling out of the back room ready to see who the idiot was that didn't understand cash only. Well the idiot was me and the idiot was not budging. The GM/owner (whoever) started up with the same lines about credit card not working.....oh and this one was novel.....THAT THERE IS SOME MAJOR WEST COAST GLITCH AND THAT NO CREDIT CARDS ARE WORKING IN THE GREATER WEST COAST AREA......or something like that. I quickly called a couple of my business's and confirmed this to be B.S. Credit cards were working fine. Anyways - I explained to him that he is making a mountain out of a mold hill. Just take my information down, and charge it to my card the following day. Sheesh it's not that hard. Besides was I going to poop cash money on the spot? HA! no I wasn't but it I wish I could haha. Things got a bit feisty. I explained to him that I'm a business owner myself, that this is not a big deal, and all he had to do was what I already explained to him. He was not impressed, perhaps he thought I was trying to boss him around or something, or perhaps I took him away from a heated messenger chat session in the backroom....who knows who cares.....but mounting tension finally released itself when he stormed off the the bar to take care of the situation himself. He wrote everything down, we left, and the credit card got billed the next day. Only took about an entire hour!! Soooo 2 stars. Past experiences have been good before this one. I will revisit one of these days and if all goes well in the future I will revisit this rating and maybe bump it back up......after all that spiced daisy is the bomb. read more

I am torn between my imperative to avoid giving 5 stars to places that aren't perfect within a small tolerance band and those spots that simply exceed their mandate + stated purpose to the public. In this case, I surrendered to the latter. Their Tequila and Oaxacan mezcal (yes, both are mezcals) range and scholarship is first-rate, nay, the best in all of Southern California. The credit for this falls to one man, Raul Yrastorza, the curator and operator of this fine bar. Catch Raul during the week, when the bar's not so busy, and you can sit there, and become fully enlightened in the joy and beauty that is Oaxacan mezcal. You'll drink more Oaxacan mezcal neat shots than you ever thought possible, learn more about the spirit and its culture in one bar session that you have your entire lifetime. Do *NOT* come here to whine and beg for a Cuervo-Fireball Margarita, or vodka, or wine spritzers. They serve a small selection of cerevesa, aka, beer, but otherwise, it's a Tequila and Oaxacan mezcal bar. They have a small selection of well-made punches (you know them as cocktails) - and many of them are inspired and excellent. My earnest suggestion to you is to go there on a Wednesday night, sit at the bar, just put your trust in Raul, and let him guide you through a wonderful odyssey of Mesoamerican tradition given a boost by Iberian-Arabic distillation technology. I'm STILL trying to track down the TOSBA ESPADIN that Raul slyly poured into my glass those many months ago. These kinds of spirits aren't for those who fear anything but "gentle" or light tasting spirits. Oaxacan mezcal is mostly still made by centuries-old methods, using fire-wood roasted maguey in stone or clay vessels, and then pot-distilled to a low level of fractionation. When the distiller is unskilled or careless, the result is practically gasoline. Most of your unpleasant college experiences with Oaxacan mezcal was invariably of this sort. But there are many sublimely skilled and subtle distillers of this beguiling spirit in Oaxaca, and these offer an incredible range of terroir and richly nuanced flavours and aromas. They innately work very well in Daisies and Punches. They sing loud and clear in most mixes, provided they're given a chance. If you're the sort who thinks bourbon is "strong", don't come here. If you're the sort who reaches for vodka 4 times out of 5, don't come here. But if you're the sort who has tasted Sauza Hornitos in a "decent" Margarita Daisy (made with fresh lime juice and Cointreau), and wondered, "Hey, I wonder how this would taste with something a little more honest and expressive." - come here tonight, and prepare to have your mind blown. Let Raul transport you to the outer limits of Spiritual experience. Raul Yrastorza is an under-appreciated ambassador and paedagogue of Oaxacan mezcal, and a Los Angeles treasure. This has become one of my favorite bars for happy hour. They have a vast selection of tequila and mezqual. You must try the Spicy Daisy! It's delicious! Spicy and sweet all at once, kind of reminds me of a Mexican tamarind candy. Also, try their monthly tequila and mezqual tastings. Imagine going to a bar where the exact scheme they are putting forth is supposed to be figured out by you the consumer and in the cloak of kitsch...... they offer you jalopy cardboard menus and then expect you to shell out $7 for a beer that you could get a 6 pack of at Von's for the same amount. Yes they have mescal and tequila in abundance ; however there is absolutely no guide of what you could expect from your $13 drink. Does Cedd Moses think his shit doesn't stink? Provide a service with the price tag! This place is cool! It's chill and when you're not in the mood to deal with the crowds or lines at Association or Varnish this is the place for you. The drinks are great (keep in mind mostly tequila). The bartenders are beautiful and I love the patio! Try to snag the big couch for your group. It's a great place to hang all night. Las Perlas is one of my favorite downtown DTLA stomping grounds. The door guys (all 10-Zero guys) are some of the best in down. Hi Carter! Rarely a line, and rarely enforced for regulars, this place is always on my list of roving drinking. Across the street is the rarely-visited-by-me Association, flanked by another favorite: Cole's/Varnish so venturing south of Main to go to visit Las Perlas is an easy one. Once inside I order strictly from Noel. The best spicy Margarita I have ever have and my go to drink here. He can also whip up anything from scratch for guests in your party that happen to be tequila adverse. Without question the best selection of Tequila and Mezcal in downtown LA. Actually it's the only place I can think of with Mezcal selection at all so if that's your thing (like myself) then go here asap. I give it 3 stars because the last time I was there the manager kicked my friend out for being too drunk even though he was probably the most sober in our group. Let's just say it did not go over well. Sad to say we were on a mission to trade our hard earned dollars for their fine selections, but it didn't work out. It's okay. The happy hour is whatever, I think it's pretty ridiculous how cheaply made the drinks are (like a glass with tequila plus some sugary soda really?). Actually I didn't like the menu at all and I think there are so many better happy hour places in DTLA. I even got a drink off the regular priced menu (something mezcal with some puree guava and a flower); the mezcal was cheap and overpowered anything added to that drink. Came here for the first time last Saturday and it was really nice and fun. Not too crowded so we were able to get some seats at the bar and service was fast and great. Staff is funny! Drinks are nice and strong. It is a Tequila bar so the whole bar back is filled with all types of tequila and mezcal. I got an OG Paloma and then a Pineapple Jarrito Paloma and both were really good and prices are fair too. Decor is adorable. I am a sucker for "Dia de los Muertos" and they have cute skeletons on the bar counter as well as a Virgen de Guadalupe up. & of course to top it off they have a taco lady out in the patio! If you like tequila then this is your place. Extensive cocktail list of margaritas and other tequila or mezcal-based drinks. The ambiance is cute, it's decorated colorfully. The delicious smell of tacos is pretty hard to ignore if you're in the patio area. Overall seems like a fun bar, but it was too crowded so there was no available seating (and bartenders were so slow). It seems like the space was intended primarily for dining or drinking at tables, and there wasn't really non-awkward space to stand around and socialize in. I think I'd be back but earlier next time, so that we can grab a table and sit and enjoy some of the drinks and the tacos. read more

What better place for us to go celebrate my good friend passing her citizenship test, than to Las Perlas. I've been wanting to hit this since its opening, and we happen to be fortunate enough to have gone on a Monday when it's all-night happy hour AND it's super chill; two significant factors for me. Very cool little place with awesome decor, but most importantly, the taxidermy. I offered to buy the rooster, but they didn't budge... The bar itself has awesome selection of tequila and mescals, as well as their margaritas made with fresh fruit and even micheladas! I have to give them props on their margaritas, seeing that it's probably the drink I care for the least, the numerous margaritas I sampled from friends were mixed ridiculously well and damn tasty. I kept it simple with a beer and a nice reposado mescal which I can't recall its name at the moment. The young lady responsible for the 5-star drinks was Talia, whom was mad cool to chat with, on top of her top notch mixing skills. Yet another factor that sold me on Las Perlas, was the fact that they allow you to bring outside food into the bar! So don't hesitate to swing by for some tacos before getting your drink on here. Despite the fact that I probably won't get myself to come here on a weekend night, seeing how packed the place gets, and me having a low douchebag tolerance these days, Las Perlas has definitely gone on my top five favorite bars of DTLA... I had been to Las Perlas before on a crowded weekend. While I did enjoy the music, good Mexican food, mezcal/tequila drinks, and cantina look/feel I do recommend coming early (happy hour has some pretty good specials) or on a weeknight. Went with my mother on my birthday which landed on a Monday. We really enjoyed the live music, extra elbow room and our time there. Dan the bartender was so nice and helpful. My mother came into the bar like a deer in headlights. She wanted a margarita and a beer but wanted to wait on the beer until after she finished the margarita. She also didn't want to pay more than once. I told her that she could open up a tab. I'm a bartender myself but my mom (43), new to the bar scene, and still confused about this very normal practice still asked Dan how she can have the best of both worlds. Bless Dan's heart. He was patient and polite with my mother and explained to her how this "tab" thing goes. At the end of the night I asked her if she tipped the bartender. She didn't. Dan gave her a receipt but she couldn't read it because she didn't have her glasses. Lol *‍ I should have been supervising her. My bad Dan. My mom clearly did not have a wild 20s party phase. Las Perlas draws you with their handmade looking designs, bountiful plants, charming lights and airy feel. We were there on a Saturday night before prime time (say 9pm) for my low-key group gathering but things became more interesting and raucous once 10pm hit. Drinking is costly (cheapest tequila drink went for $9) but fortunately, you do get what you pay for. I thoroughly enjoyed every sip of my Poblano Escobar-- a spicy drink that includes mezcal and cumin, and if I could have it my way, this would be a drink I'd have often. Great for people watching and for smokers (they have an outdoor patio), I believe the bar does live up to the hype. read more

I love tequila and after reading reviews for this place, it seemed the perfect spot to celebrate my birthday! Had 4 different cocktails. Couldn't tell you the names of them as they were pretty much just put in front of my face by my friends. One was some berry one that was reeeaaally good! Another was green and had a pepper in it. Naturally, that one had a kick to it! Great for those who like spicy drinks. (That one was called the Poblano Escobar.) They were all pretty good. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the drinks here. Some friends of mine tried the beers here and they were impressed. Good selection if you want a beer and not a cocktail. I will say that the night we went, it seemed a bit of a sausage fest. Not many girls. haha. But the crowd was chill, the decor was fun, and they had some light graffiti/art guy to entertain. Music was good, but too loud. Had to yell to converse with my friends sitting right next to me. Oh, and loved the coat hanger next to the booth! Looks like LA's take on a Mexican Cantina. They have a pool table and a patio for smoking if that's your thing. String lights add lighting to the room. I like the bar and how it is set up with the decorations around the liquor bottles. I don't drink soda so I was pretty screwed out of drink choices to pair with my tequila. I believe my drink was called a paloma which is grapefruit soda and tequila (yes i know early i said that i don't drink soda. BIT THE BULLET) it was very refreshing and it is a traditional drink mix in Mexico. Once you order from the bar you can make your way through a doorway into a room with alice and wonderland paintings on the wall. (WEIRD TO SEE AT A CANTINA) Overall it was a fun time here. read more

Mescal! Wow, who knew? If you're a tequila lover, this bar is a must. The decor alone makes you feel like you're in another part of the world. But what makes this place is the bar professionals. Notice I didn't say bar tenders. That's right, they are absolutely pros. I had never tried mescal, but was curious, so I asked the barman to share with me its qualities. I swear this guy went to booze college. (Remember Half-Baked? "Damn, nigga' where'd you go? Weed college?"). I learned that tequila and mescal are essentially made from the same ingredient (agave) but that 29 types of agave can be used to make mescal, and it is smoked, giving it a very, uh, well, smokey flavor. Tequila on the other hand is made from a single variety of agave and it is steamed. I love when the barkeep really knows his/her stuff. Definitely a cut above your run-o-the-mill dive bar. read more

The bartenders are fairly quick and know what they are doing. I heard this place gets really busy on a Friday and Saturday evening, so plan to arrive early. Went last night and met some gal pals and we all shared the Smokey Las Perlas Margarita, the OG Las Perlas Margarita and one which is called "something" Escobar...it was so good we had two and I can't remember its full name. Down side: no food, not even chips and you do get hungry after seeing how the bartenders who are more like artisans pick and choose the freshest ingredients right off the bar. Fresh everything! Rosemary, basil, blackberries, blood orange, bell peppers, dried chiles, fresh squeezed lime, even fresh large cubes of ice and many more interesting ingredients decorating the bar. If you sit at a table you don't get much service and the handwritten menus are hard to read with the dim lighting so take your glasses or use your cell. Overall good crowd, not too large for a Friday night but it was the day after Drinko de Mayo. Good place to meet up with friends and then move on somewhere else to finish the night...like King Taco like we did. read more

I am SOOOOO excited this place is open. I hadn't had mezcal before (WHY hasn't anyone opened a mezcal bar up to this point?!?!) but it's a different kind of buzz... it's very euphoric. I mean, I literally went to sleep with a smile on my face. And I'm not joking, I even had a happy hangover. Las Perlas has a very festive and authentic feel. The menus are all different and done by hand. And the the jukebox is probably the coolest selection I've seen. Some of which, I don't think I'm hip enough to know who they are... yet. The cocktails are AMAZING! My favorite is the Disco Mariachi (doesn't it just sound awesome?). And I have to say, it's a good thing it takes a little while to get a drink because it's probably safe for everyone if mezcal intake is paced. Seriously. But one trick to getting a drink faster: order through the cocktail waitresses - they make it happen and... they're smoking hot. read more

The manager there is extremely rude. A couple friends and I got kicked out of the bar for smoking cigars on the smoking patio. If it was some kind of policy that you can smoke cigarettes but not cigars, that's one thing and he could've told us that the patio does not allow cigars. Instead he went ballistic and started shouting and getting in our faces. This was our second time smoking cigars on the patio. The first time it wasn't a problem, but then the next time, a few weeks later, we were yelled at. I don't imagine I will be going back. My sister and I stopped here THREE years ago while in town and I still think about, dream about, and tell others about the Palomas we had that night. I wish I were kidding. I remember it was a bustling bar, had a great little covered patio with bomb tacos all night. Not a bad place but the drinks are really pricey. My favorite drink was the Spiced Daisy which everyone seems to like but it does cost $14. We were there with a large group and some of the drinks that my friends ordered were not very good. In fact, someone ordered a drink which consisted of pure ice with a splash of cocktail. If the bartender gave me something like that, I would have turned around and returned it. read more

This place was lovely! I came here around 11pm on a Saturday night and once we got in (there was a line as a large party had arrived just before we walked up) there was plenty of space, great music, and delicious drinks. We got served fairly quickly, though the bar was pretty packed, and wandered over to an area with a couple tables and a shelf for drinks on the wall. One of the men who worked there cleared off a group of tables a large group had been at and separated one out for us, which was surprisingly thoughtful! I had a couple mezcal margaritas ($10) and the boyfriend had several different mezcals all of which were great. The bartender was nice enough to give recommendations from their list after the first one. We didn't do too much exploring, but the decor is a little off-kilter and fun, which is what I like in a bar! Specifically there was a window into a room full of hanging rabbits' feet that I found both funny and unsettling. Definitely a conversation starter! All in all a great experience if you want to have some mezcal or tequila in a not-too-crowded and fun place downtown.
