My Airbnb was right next to Lava Java, so I came here quite a few times for the caffeine boost. I always order either their iced latte or Americano. Their drinks are usually consistently not bad, though there was 1 day when their latte was pretty bad. I also noticed that for all my drinks, there was a bit of coffee ground on the bottom. It's not enough to sip it up while drinking but it's definitely something they should address by cleaning their coffee machines better. Lines can get pretty long, esp early morning so can wait a good 15 min to leave the place with drink in hand. Service was always friendly. On our last visit here, they forgot our drinks but made them quickly once they realized and also gave us a stamp card to get a free drink next time. read more

Lava Java has an appealing menu of beverages, and the two baristas I met were both friendly and knowledgeable. I drank a house-blend iced coffee which was very good, and under $3. They also sell gift items like locally-made candy, condiments, hats, t-shirts, novelty signs, etc. I bought a red dirt hat. One conundrum about Hawaiian coffee is that it costs twice as much in Hawaii as it does at home in NJ. I buy Kauai'i beans from my local roaster for $17/lb. I do think the coffee in Hawaii tastes better, and there are many different varieties to choose from, but even ten years ago, Kona coffee at Anthony's in Paia was over $35/lb. Anthony's closed, so since then I've bought my beans at MauiGrown Coffee in Lahaina, and Maui Coffee Roasters in Kahalui. This time, I also saw the famous Kona Peaberry in the Japanese terminal at Honolulu airport for $90/lb. What a tourist ripoff. For that much, you should have an orgasm with every cup. During my recent visit, I bought several coffees to try: the dark roast Muleskinner Molakai peaberry at TuTu's Pantry, the popular "Red Rooster" caturra hybrid from MCR, and the medium roast Maui Mokka from MGC. I also bought the French-roast Maui Typica from Lava Java, which turned out to be the least expensive, and the best-tasting of the four. It was $20 for half a pound, but if you buy three, you get one free, so not too bad. I brought three bags back home as gifts, and one for myself. Lava Java is legit. read more

Awesome guest service and products! The owner Scott is the most amazing person I've talked to in a long time. I ordered a large coconut iced latte with macadamia nut milk. Amazing!! Im a Starbucks person but I have totally converted in to a Lava Java Lover!! We arrived on Maui on a Friday and went to the shop on Saturday morning. They were so personable and friendly. We bought some other items from the shop that support local businesses. We ended up going back to the shop on Monday to get more coffee and the other items for family and friends. Scott, you and your team are doing an awesome job with perpetuating the Aloha Spirit and have the product to back it up. Holomua!! read more

Didn't snag a photo of my iced latte, but get the iced latte with oat milk! It's such a dream and hits so nicely on a peaceful morning. I tried the almond and macadamia nut milk as well and oat was my favorite. Staff are nice and prepared my order fast. They have small medium and large sizes, with varying number of espresso shots in each. I think my order was ~$4.50 and it's across the famous brunch cafe so good time to give it a try while you're waiting! read more

We do love their coffee but have been disappointed that the machine that makes the froze. Mochas is hit or miss. Sometimes there is not enough to serve customers so the mix is just poured over ice-certainly not as good. Also there are some tee shirts in the back that are quite fun too. read more

Uber friendly staff. I was drawn here because I saw they grew their own coffee. Was pleasantly surprised by their selection of flavors. They had a buy 3 bags of whole bean coffee get 1 free promo (range from $15-$20 apiece). The owner and barista were doling out samples when we arrived and I eagerly sipped their peaberry brew and frozen mocha. As a regular coffee drinker, my tolerance for caffeine is really high but that shot of peaberry is something else. Alertness took hold within 5 minutes - no better way to start your day. Looked kinda thin, not creamy like other mushroom soups I've had. I was thinking, "Ahh here we go." Took one spoonful and immediately had to humble myself. That soup was money. Like, stop-talking-and-just-eat. My wife tried it and confirmed that this soup was "winnahs" . Deep mushroom flavor with the right amount of seasoning. It also came with a little piece of focaccia toast which I would have really enjoyed but had to take my wife's word for it since she ate um all . Should've ordered the bowl. Rookie mistake. For my main, I went with the original eggs Benedict. Portions were a little on the small side, but with the roasted potatoes, I was good. Didn't leave hungry, didn't need to loosen the belt--perfect middle ground. My wife got the strawberry waffles and yeah... those were legit. She's not a syrup person, so she asked for more whipped cream. The waitress comes back with a little mountain of whipped cream in the little silver ramekin. All in all, solid spot. Friendly people, ono food, and little touches that make you feel taken care of. We will be heading to Cafe Kaila again to try some other stuff like the "chicken and waffles", and next time, I'm not playing around with the soup. Bowl, Garans.

I stopped by here 2 days ago for my morning coffee. Whenever I go on vacation I try to hit up a new…read morecoffee shop every morning and on this day I ended up heading over to Kraken Coffee. This particular location is a truck in the food truck area of Kihei Marketplace and has both a walk up window and a drive thru. On the morning I was there, two people were working, one on each side. After looking over the menu I decided on a Haleakalatte and chose to get it hot. The menu described it as a deep rich caramel latte. As I watched the barista make my drink, I noticed it was going into a plastic cup, which meant iced. It ended up coming out as a large iced coffee. Since it wasn't a big deal, I took it and went on my way. The coffee itself ended up being pretty good. The caramel flavor was on the lighter side, adding some sweetness without overpowering the coffee. The coffee itself was rich and came through nicely. I also liked that they used coffee ice cubes, which helped prevent the drink from getting watered down as the ice melted. If anything, it added a slight bitterness, which I didn't mind. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While I would have preferred the hot latte I ordered, the iced version worked out just fine and was still enjoyable.

But I dither, Nick's Fishmarket Maui is in an incredible location inside the Fairmont Kea Lani and it's setting alone would be enough to pull me back even if the food was just okay. Thankfully the food is MUCH better than "just okay", it is generally outstanding. I rotate starters and salads because there are so many great choices. The Caesar Salad is about as good as they get, but I really, really like the Maui Greek Salad. With at least four people we start with the Seafood Tower, but find it just too big for two of us. Other than that the Kalua Pig Pot Stickers, Charred Octopus, Crab Cakes and Blackened Ahi are the starters I rotate through. For my Main, I am less eclectic. I have a hard time getting away from the Diver Scallops and Scampi. I have tried other dishes, the Abalone, Kona Lobster and Ribeye (I know, I know, who orders steak in a seafood restaurant), but I keep coming back to. For Dessert, I am also in a rut, but I love desserts they set on fire and in this case it is Bananas Foster. I do sneak bites off my DW's Creme Brulee, as does off my BF. The service is terrific, attentive without being intrusive. I used to joke about the Chicago store that if you knocked a spoon off the table someone would catch it before it hit the floor. The Maui service isn't quite that attentive and I am not sure I would want it to be.

Hubs ordered the lamb while I had mahi mahi tacos (I didn't have a huge appetite). I would not order the tacos again. Table next to us raved about them and although the tortilla and the fish were fresh, the 'blackened' seasoning did me in. Overkill on a nicely cooked piece of fish - hard pass. Lamb, although cooked properly, (and I thought interestingly presented but) hubs is a meat guy and felt all the additions - sauce, relish, goat cheese - was overkill. Have to also say he didn't enjoy the waiter taking his knife to hand prepare a bite the way he thought it should be eaten. We barely saw him after that which further soured the experience. He vanished after the big ticket part of the meal (the 82$ lamb) and mentioned a comped panna cotta for our anniversary after we'd ordered a paid desert. Oops we owe you that next time (but you'll take our money today) Our food runner was great! Super upbeat, always with a smile. Bar area was relatively quiet until it wasn't. We wouldn't spend $350 this way again but would sit at the bar for sashimi and bounce.

BLUE BITS OF PLASTIC IN OUR COFFEE. WTF??? This place accuses its customers of shoplifting. WOW. I'm a 30%+ cash tipper no matter where I go. But I've NEVER had such BAD SERVICE like we did on Maui. It didn't matter where we were at or what we were doing on Maui. It didn't matter if you were getting married or had a birthday. No matter WHERE we went, the service was ATROCIOUS. Hard eye rolling. Loud sighs."I guess." "I suppose so." All in a whiney voice that one could expect from teenagers, but NOT ADULTS. In 5 days there was not one "Aloha". Not one "Mahalo". Not even a smile. If you don't want to live on an island, then MOVE. I saw more burned out cars on the side of the road than I saw in Oakland, L.A., Chicago, & Detroit COMBINED. 25 burned out cars alone just on the Road to Hana (NOT worth the drive, by the way.) BIG homeless encampments full of trash, broken campers and tons of wrecked cars. Maui is full of tourist traps & con jobs. Bait & switch & just plain LIES. NEVER TIP IN MAUI. NEVER. During my brief two-day trip to Maui, Lava Java Coffee Roasters became an essential pitstop--not once, but twice. The service was incredible, and it was enlightening to have a brief chat with the owner about how recent fires have impacted coffee production. I can't recommend their hot macnut latte enough; it's a delightful experience in a cup. And don't leave without grabbing a bag of their Maui coffee. K so i've been trying to find this place for so long!!...I went here 2 years ago and i loved it. coffee was amazing...when my buddy and i walked in they made us try the green bean...and it was cool. THE espresso was amazing...so I bought 1 lb of the peaberry coffee bean for my best friend to try...he was very impressed and told me it was the best coffee he has ever tried..and he loves coffee. Finally found the website and i am so pumped because i can order him the peaberry coffee for his birthday in 2 months...so awesome! read more

Best Coffee EVER! I am a regular visitor to Maui and my friends have been telling me to try Lava Java Coffee Roasters of Maui, so I finally did. Wow! I wish I had listened earlier. The coffee was excellent! The owner, Pat, was super informative and even let me try a fresh, home-grown coffee cherry. I also sampled a frosty coffee drink, (I think called Granita?), it was AWESOME, Strabucks can't even compete. I see the negative reviews and I'm surprised, this place is great, I'll be back and be sending people in. read more

Lava Java is for coffee fans. If coffee is your drink then Lava Java Coffee is the place for you! The owner is personable and the attendant is very friendly. The last time I was there (a couple of weeks ago) the owner was roasting coffee and had just put some on the porch to cool in the maui morning air. One of the highlights of our annual stay in Maui was our daily trip to Lava Java Coffee in Kihei. This quaint family owned shop serves outstanding lattes and coffee. On our last day we purchased bags of pure Maui Peaberry coffee taking advantage of the great discount of getting a free bag for every three purchased - great price. We highly recommend that all coffee lovers visiting Maui go to Lava Java Coffee for their java fix. read more

So I was across the street and a red haired woman started yelling and started gossiping about someone. It seems that she should take care of her personal issues before arriving at work. 19 years in the restaurant industry, this could hurt a business with a quack like that. I love lava java's frozen mocha granita with whipped cream, because it's delisious and it gives me energy all day long! The service is quick and the staff is very friendly. This was a staple each morning of our trip! The owner is so nice, friendly and knowledgeable. The baristas were also fantastic. Loved the granita. Lava Java was a nice spot to take a break and grab an afternoon iced coffee after shopping. Cool, local vibe. The store is air-conditioned, which was perfect for escaping the sun for a bit. We were greeted by 3 lovely baristas and they were sooo helpful in finding the order for me! My order can be difficult (sorry to all the baristas :( ) where I'm so particular on my milk/sugar/coffee ratio and they were able to get it perfectlyyyy. I ordered an iced double shot espresso W/ simple syrup and 2% milk. They didn't even have 2% but was still able to manually make it for me!! I am so appreciative of doing the extra mile for my drink. + points for using iced coffee cubes to make sure the drinks aren't watered down either! I highly recommend!
