Do not spend $45 for a small tasteless Tiramisu cake here. It should be called yellow cake with whipped cream and cocoa powder. There wasn't any coffee flavor nor mascarpone cream in it and more peculiarly with layers of some sort of pastry cream. Tiramisu cake used to be good here but not anymore. You can get better tasting Tiramisu cake from a supermarket bakery or from Costco at a fraction of the price you pay here. read more

I really need to start calling in ahead of time, like suggested by one of the shop workers, so I know what flavors of macarons are going to be available on the mornings I stop in. They vary greatly and there is no rhyme or reason to which flavors will be available on a given day. Since my favorite flavors of boysenberry, coconut and pistachio were not available when I stopped in, I purchased coffee, chocolate ganache, mango, and passion fruit this time around. Of those flavors, I'd have to say I'd repurchase the mango and passion fruit again. Tried a whoopie pie for the first time ever. Did not know what to expect. The one I had was with chocolate on the cake part and had white marshmallow filling. The overall taste kinda reminded me of a Ding Dong. It was pretty good, but I think I will stick to macarons. Was hoping to trying a slice of tiramisu cake but since I was so early, a lot of the cakes were not out yet. I specifically come to Layer Cake Bakery for the French macarons! Definitely one of the best places to get macarons in the heart of OC! French Macaron Flavors (gluten free!): - Vanilla - Strawberry - Chocolate ganache - Hazelnut - Coconut - Pistachio - Salted Caramel - Coffee - Green Tea - Peach - Passion Fruit - Rose - Pumpkin and Peppermint/Candy cane (seasonal) My favorite flavors would have to be the coconut, pistachio, and green tea! These macarons are perfectly baked and all made from scratch! They have several different sized boxes you can buy them in, although I usually purchase them by the dozen. The only downside to this place is that it closes so early! I'm pretty sure they close around 6-7pm, which was a bit too early for me. I have visited Merely Sweets in Brea simply because they are open much later than here. Layer Cake Bakery is one of the few places I know of that sell macarons in OC. I was really looking forward to trying Layer Cake Bakery as the latest stop on Sandy T's Summer Cupcake Tour. The shop is really cute, and I like that they have tables so you can relax and enjoy your pastries. Everything in the case looked really good, but perhaps cupcakes are not their forte. Unfortunately I was disappointed with my selection. I got a coconut cupcake, and BF chose the Oreo cupcake. You would think these two flavors would be completely different, but alas, they were both plain cupcakes and only the frosting on top was different. The main thing I didn't like about the cupcakes is that they were in a refrigerated case. The cake was a little dry, and the frosting was similar in consistency to a block of Philadelphia cream cheese. I like to get a particular patio of cake to frosting in each bite, but that was impossible with this hard, cold frosting. Finally I ended up using a fork to eat my cupcake so that I could break off a bit of cake and then combine it with some frosting on my fork. And I thought the whole reason for having cupcakes was so you wouldn't need a fork. Silly me! I might come back to try other baked goods, but after the poor cupcake experience I had, I'm not overly excited to try Layer Cake Bakery again. read more

2.5 Stars. After having a pretty crappy day, I was in a total funk. I came here to try their macarons, because trying new, yummy foods is one of the things that makes me the happiest. I got one of each of: pistachio, green tea, passion fruit, and strawberry flavors. They looked so cute and colorful all packaged up!! I couldn't wait and decided to eat them right in the car. That's when the disappointment set in. =( I ate the pistachio one first. While the flavor of the pistachio was nice, light, and not overwhelming, the macaron itself had a hard shell and dried out texture. It tasted like it had been sitting out for a couple of days. Maybe it had, because it was the last one in the case. Soo sad. It was the same situation with the passion fruit and strawberry - dried out, hard, gross. She was welcoming, enthusiastic, knowledgable, informative, attentive to my wishes, and receptive to my comments. Also, a rarity these days: she even thanked me for my business (as I thanked her for her service.) Her beaming smile did not hurt, either.
